Abstract:We study the thermodynamics of an XYZ Heisenberg chain with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, which describes the low-energy behaviors of a one-dimensional spin-orbit-coupled bosonic model in the deep insulating region. The entropy and the specific heat are calculated numerically by the quasi-exact transfer-matrix renormalization group. In particular, in the limit $U^\prime/U\rightarrow\infty$, our model is exactly solvable and thus serves as a benchmark for our numerical method. From our data, we find that for $U^\prime/U>1$ a quantum phase transition between an (anti)ferromagnetic phase and a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid phase occurs at a finite $\theta$, while for $U^\prime/U<1$ a transition between a ferromagnetic phase and a paramagnetic phase happens at $\theta=0$. A refined ground-state phase diagram is then deduced from their low-temperature behaviors. Our findings provide an alternative way to detect those distinguishable phases experimentally.

Abstract:We study the zero- and the finite-temperature behavior of the integrable spin-1/2 XXZ periodic chain with an impurity by the algebraic and thermal Bethe ansatz methods. We evaluate the impurity local magnetization at zero temperature analytically and derive the impurity susceptibility exactly from it. In the graphs of the impurity specific heat versus temperature, we show how the impurity spin becomes more liberated from the bulk many-body effect as the exchange coupling between the impurity spin and other spins decreases, and also that in low temperature it couples strongly to them such as the Kondo effect. Thus, we observe not only the crossover behavior from the high- to the low-temperature regime but also another one from the $N$-site chain to the $(N-1)$-site chain with a free impurity spin. We also show that the estimate of the Wilson ratio at a given low temperature is independent of the impurity parameter if its absolute value is small enough with respect to the temperature, and the universality class is described by the XXZ anisotropy in terms of the dressed charge.

Abstract:We study the thermodynamics of a one-dimensional quantum spin-1/2 Heisenberg ferromagnetic system with random antiferromagnetic impurity bonds. In the dilute impurity limit, we generalize the modified spin-wave theory for random spin chains, where local chemical potentials for spin waves in ferromagnetic spin segments are introduced to ensure zero magnetization at finite temperature. This approach successfully describes the crossover from the behavior of a pure one-dimensional ferromagnet at high temperatures to a distinct Curie behavior due to randomness at low temperatures. We discuss the effects of impurity bond strength and concentration on the crossover and low-temperature behavior.

Abstract:We study exactly the effect of an impurity in the interacting quantum spin chain at low temperature by solving the integrable spin-1/2 XXZ periodic chain with an impurity through the algebraic and thermal Bethe ansatz methods. In particular, we investigate how the crossover temperature for the impurity specific heat depends on the impurity parameter, i.e. the coupling of the impurity to other spins, and show that it is consistent with the analytic expression that is obtained by setting the impurity susceptibility to be proportional to the inverse of the crossover temperature. In the model, two types of crossover behavior appear: one from the high-temperature regime to the low-temperature Kondo regime and another from the N-site homogeneous chain to the (N-1)-site chain with a decoupled free impurity spin, with respect to the temperature and the impurity parameter, respectively.

Abstract:We study quantum spin-1/2 Heisenberg ferromagnetic chains with dilute random antiferromagnetic impurity bonds with the modified spin-wave theory. By describing thermal excitations in the language of spin waves, we observe a low-temperature Curie susceptibility due to the formation of large spin clusters first predicted by the real-space renormalization-group approach, as well as a crossover to a pure ferromagnetic spin-chain behavior at intermediate and high temperatures. We compare our results of the modified spin-wave theory to quantum Monte Carlo simulations.
Impurity-induced quantum phase transition in finite Heisenberg spin chains: Criteria for existence and stability

Abstract: A quantum phase transition may occur in a system at zero temperature when a controlling parameter is tuned towards a critical point. An important question is whether such a critical point exists in a particular system and how stable it is. Here, we identify the critical point of a quantum phase transition as a singular point in the affine algebraic variety of the characteristic equation for the Hamiltonian describing the system, with an unstable critical point being associated with an isolated singular point which has a finite Tjurina number. The theory is illustrated by studying a model system of zero-dimensional (finite) Heisenberg spin chain with an impurity, which exhibits a nontrivial first-order quantum phase transition. Both analytical and numerical calculations show that the quantum phase transition always exists when the impurity has a $Z_2$ symmetry but only remains in systems with an even number of spin sites when the $Z_2$ symmetry is broken.

Abstract:We investigate entanglement properties in dimerized and frustrated spin-one models by applying the concept of negativity. On the basis of the relation between negativity and correlators, negativities are numerically calculated. We study the effects of dimerization and frustration on entanglement. We also consider the case of finite temperature, and determine the threshold temperature before which the thermal state is doomed to be entangled.

Abstract:We study the Heisenberg ferromagnetic spin chain coupled with a boundary impurity. Via Bethe ansatz solution, it is found that (i) for J>0, the impurity spin behaves as a diamagnetic center and is completely screened by 2S bulk spins in the ground state, no matter how large the impurity spin is; (ii) the specific heat of the local composite (impurity plus 2S bulk spins which form bound state with it) shows a simple power law Cloc∼T3/2; (iii) for J<0, the impurity is locked into the critical behavior of the bulk. Possible phenomena in higher dimensions are discussed.

The string hypothesis in the spin rapidity is discussed extensively. The thermodynamics quantities, such as the specific heat and the magnetic susceptibility, are obtained.

We obtain an analytical expression of negativity in the XXZ model and an entanglement witness. The roles of the negativity and entanglement witnesses in the quantum phase transitions in these two models are studied numerically.

Abstract:We give an exact matrix product steady state and matrix product forms of local observables for the bulk impurity-doped XXZ spin model coupled to dissipators at both ends, whose dynamics is described by the Lindblad quantum master equation. We find that local magnetization is induced at the impurity site when the spin current flows, which is contrary to the usual situation where current suppresses magnetization due to heating. It is proved that this current-induced magnetization survives in the thermodynamic limit, and the spin current does not depend on the impurity strength. We discuss the role of bulk integrability by comparing the results with those of non-integrable models solved numerically by the quantum trajectory method.

The Kondo effect in the quantum $XX$ spin chain

Abstract:We investigate the boundary phenomena that arise in a finite-size $XX$ spin chain interacting through an $XX$ interaction with a spin$-\frac{1}{2}$ impurity located at its edge. Upon Jordan-Wigner transformation, the model is described by a quadratic Fermionic Hamiltonian. Our work displays, within this ostensibly simple model, the emergence of the Kondo effect, a quintessential hallmark of strongly correlated physics. We also show how the Kondo cloud shrinks and turns into a single particle bound state as the impurity coupling increases beyond a critical value. Using both \textit{Bethe Ansatz} and \textit{exact diagonalization} techniques, we show that the local moment of the impurity is screened by different mechanisms depending on the ratio of the boundary and bulk coupling. When the ratio falls below the critical value $\sqrt{2}$, the impurity is screened via the multiparticle Kondo effect. However, when the ratio between the coupling exceeds the critical value , a bound mode is formed at the impurity site which screens the spin of the impurity. We show that the boundary phase transition is reflected in local ground state properties by calculating the spinon density of states, the magnetization at the impurity site in the presence of a global magnetic field, and the finite temperature susceptibility. We find that the spinon density of states in the Kondo phase has the characteristic Lorentzian peak that moves from the Fermi level to the maximum energy of the spinon as the impurity coupling is increased and becomes a localized bound mode in the bound mode phase. Moreover, the impurity magnetization and the finite temperature impurity susceptibility behave differently in the two phases. When the boundary coupling $J_{\mathrm{imp}}$ exceeds the critical value $\sqrt{2}J$, the model is no longer boundary conformal invariant as a massive bound mode appears at the impurity site.

Abstract:A spin-1/2 magnetic impurity coupled to a one-dimensional correlated electron system have been studied by applying the density renormalization group method. The Kondo temperature is substantially enhanced by strong repulsive interactions in the chain, but it changes non-monotonically in the case of electron attraction. The magnetization of the impurity at zero-temperature shows local Fermi liquid behavior.

Abstract:The ground state and thermodynamic properties of spin-1 and spin-3/2 chains are investigated via exactly solved su(3) and su(4) models with physically motivated chemical potential terms. The analysis involves the Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz and the High Temperature Expansion (HTE) methods. For the spin-1 chain with large single-ion anisotropy, a gapped phase occurs which is significantly different from the valence-bond-solid Haldane phase. The theoretical curves for the magnetization, susceptibility and specific heat are favourably compared with experimental data for a number of spin-1 chain compounds. For the spin-3/2 chain a degenerate gapped phase exists starting at zero external magnetic field. A middle magnetization plateau can be triggered by the single-ion anisotropy term. Overall, our results lend further weight to the applicability of integrable models to the physics of low-dimensional quantum spin systems. They also highlight the utility of the exact HTE method.

Abstract: In this work, we put forward the theoretical foundation toward thermodynamics of quantum impurity systems measurable in experiments. The theoretical developments involve the identifications on two types of thermodynamic entanglement free--energy spectral functions for impurity systems that can be either fermionic or bosonic or combined. Consider further the thermodynamic limit in which the hybrid environments satisfy the Gaussian--Wick's theorem. We then relate the thermodynamic spectral functions to the local quantum impurity systems spectral densities that are often experimentally measurable. Another type of inputs is the bare--bath coupling spectral densities, which could be accurately determined with various methods. Similar relation is also established for the nonentanglement component that exists only in anharmonic bosonic impurity systems. For illustration, we consider the simplest noninteracting systems, with focus on the strikingly different characteristics between the bosonic and fermionic scenarios.
Eigenstate Thermalization and its breakdown in Quantum Spin Chains with Inhomogeneous Interactions

Abstract:The eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH) is a successful theory that establishes the criteria for ergodicity and thermalization in isolated quantum many-body systems. In this work, we investigate the thermalization properties of spin-$ 1/2 $ XXZ chain with linearly-inhomogeneous interactions. We demonstrate that introduction of the inhomogeneous interactions leads to an onset of quantum chaos and thermalization, which, however, becomes inhibited for sufficiently strong inhomogeneity. To exhibit ETH, and to display its breakdown upon varying the strength of interactions, we probe statistics of energy levels and properties of matrix elements of local observables in eigenstates of the inhomogeneous XXZ spin chain. Moreover, we investigate the dynamics of the entanglement entropy and the survival probability which further evidence the thermalization and its breakdown in the considered model. We outline a way to experimentally realize the XXZ chain with linearly-inhomogeneous interactions in systems of ultracold atoms. Our results highlight a mechanism of emergence of ETH due to insertion of inhomogeneities in an otherwise integrable system and illustrate the arrest of quantum dynamics in presence of strong interactions.
