Abstract:Liquid dielectrics filled with nanoparticles have drawn huge attentions due to enhanced dielectric and thermal properties. Despite of great achievements have been made, the charging mechanisms of nanoparticles suspended in liquid dielectrics are still open questions. It is previously argued that field charging with Maxwell–Wagner relaxation fails to explain the enhanced breakdown strength when nanoparticles have longer relaxation time constant than the timescale of streamer development in liquid dielectrics. However, it is proven in this article when the condition that the charging time constant $\tau _{\mathrm {pc}} \ll $ the charging time $t_{\mathrm {pc}}$ is fulfilled, nanoparticles can acquire significant number of charges even if $t_{\mathrm {pc}} \ll $ relaxation time constant $\tau _{\mathrm {MW}}$ . It is also showed that the field charging models for nanoparticles suspended in gases and liquids share the same formulation and thus can be unified. In addition, diffusion charging is proposed to be one of the charging mechanisms for nanoparticles in liquid dielectrics, and Fuchs’s model is extended from aerosol science to liquid dielectrics. It is demonstrated the diffusion charging could be far more important than field charging in liquid dielectrics. This work may bridge the gaps of charging mechanisms and models between gaseous and liquid dielectrics.
Effect of Maxwell–Wagner Relaxation on Field Charging of Particles

Abstract:To eliminate ambiguity on the role of particles as being purely dielectric or conductive and make the theoretical predictions match better with experimental data, we present a field-charging model, which embodies the Maxwell-Wagner relaxation mechanism, through which the electric field around the particle is linked with the permittivity and conductivity of particle and medium. The ion-particle attachment coefficient and the particle charging equation are derived. It is found that the charge acquired by a particle during the field charging process is determined by the permittivity and conductivity of particle and medium instead of only permittivity as stated by Pauthenier's theory. With the help of this model, three important cases are examined in detail, and we find that the role of a particle is determined by the relaxation time constant, (MW) ((MW) = (E-2 + 2E(1))/(sigma(2) + 2 sigma(1)), where E and sigma denote the permittivity and conductivity respectively, and subscripts 1 and 2 represent the medium and particles, respectively) and the particle charging time t(pc). Another important aspect not found by Pauthenier's model is that the charge of a particle is lower than that of a purely dielectric particle if sigma(2)/(sigma(2) + 2 sigma(1)) < E-2/(E-2 + 2E(1)). For the sake of validation, some sets of experimental data are selected from the existent works to compare with the predictions made by our model. The results show that our predictions are in good agreement with the experimental data when Pauthenier's model performs poorly. Finally, the inclusion of Maxwell-Wagner relaxation into diffusion charging models is discussed. A Front-Tracking Method for Simulating Interfacial Flows with Particles and Soluble Surfactants

Abstract:In this research, a three-dimensional model is proposed to simulate the behavior of particle-covered droplets that contain soluble surfactant. The model includes a full two-way coupling between surfactant transport and particle motion, with surfactant concentrations at the interface and in the bulk linked to the flow and motion of the interface by a convection-diffusion equation. A front-tracking method is used to track the interfacial flow, while a semi-resolved particle method is used to model the particles, accounting for various forces acting on them, such as the excluded volume force, the direct contact force and the hydrodynamic lubrication force. The model also includes a surfactant-dependent surface tension that can affect the particle-interface interactions. The model is validated against previous numerical data and a parametric study is performed to examine the delicate interplay between flow fields and interfaces associated with surfactant concentration and particle motion. The study then investigates the role of surfactants in the dynamics of a particle-covered droplet, focusing on their coupled influence on droplet deformation. In addition, it is observed that particles bridge colliding droplet interfaces and suppress fluid drainage from the gap, preventing droplet coalescence along with the interparticle repulsion force.

Abstract:We present a model to investigate the induced interaction between rotating particles in ER fluids. For particle undergoes uniform rotation or harmonic oscillation, the effects due to dipole relaxation are studied analytically. The induced interaction between particles which are rotating uniformly is derived. The result shows that the dynamic effect reduces the interaction between particles. A proof on the consistency of the relaxation equation with charge conservation upon rotation is also given.

Abstract:study and modeling process of effervescent atomization are reviewed. The mechanism of droplet events and the treatment of liquid fragmentation process and dispersed particles are systematically presented, which includes the primary atomization of Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluid, instability analysis, turbulence treatment, particle tracking, secondary atomization and droplets collision. The review on the sub-models involved in the simulation of effervescence is followed by a summary of the achievements of modeling. First is the validation of models; then the parametric study is summarized; the third part introduces the fitting formula of droplet mean size and impinging factors, and finally the scope of future study is indicated.

Abstract:The multiphase fluid system in the presence of surfactant is frequently encountered in numerous scientific and engineering applications. Developing a model for accurately simulating such a complex system is of great significance. In this work, we propose a multi-relaxation time phase-field lattice Boltzmann model for simulating droplet dynamics with soluble surfactants. The accuracy and validity of the model are verified by benchmark cases including static droplet and Rayleigh-Taylor instability tests. The effects of surfactant, capillary number, and density ratio on single-droplet deformation and two-droplet interaction under shear flow are investigated. Simulation results indicate that the Marangoni stress generated by the inhomogeneous distribution of surfactant at the interface plays the role of promoting droplet deformation and hindering droplet coalescence. Within the studied range, it tends to be much easier for droplets to deform with the decrease in density ratio. The increase in the capillary number and surfactant concentration is conducive to promoting the deformation and breakup of droplets. In addition, a higher surfactant concentration is found to result in greater liquid film thickness between droplets, which would hinder the coalescence of the droplets.

Abstract:Most properties of charged particles' dispersions are closely related to the amount of charge residing on the surface of particles. Very few works have been done so far to investigate curvature-dependence of surface potential and charge density of dispersed charged particles. Although there are some experimental studies in the literature on this subject, only a few of them have examined the mathematical relationship between particle size and surface charging parameters, resulting in contradictory findings. Indeed, a universal behavior is yet to be inferred from analysis of the outcomes of these studies since they reported either a roughly constant or decreasing trend of surface charge density with increasing particle radius. Unfortunately, the majority of the limited research efforts on surface charging have focused on dispersion of charged particles in aqueous solutions, but there are systems in biological and engineering worlds where an electrolyte solution is encapsulated in the core of charged particles and immersed in a background non-electrolyte medium. In an attempt to fill this scientific gap and gain a better understanding of surface charging, analytical models are developed in the present work for prediction of surface potential, surface charge, and surface charge density for cylindrical and spherical particles in such systems. First, the problem under investigation is non-dimensionalized to facilitate the modeling process, consider the simultaneous effects of key variables, and generalize the results and behaviors. Then, the mutual relationship between every pair of variables is extracted by employing Gauss's law and combining it with the electroneutrality condition in an aqueous cavity. Afterwards, the resulting generalized seemingly simple, but inherently complex, integral equations are solved to build the characteristic curves and regressed to derive explicit characteristic equations. Finally, the derived characteristic equations are transformed into a dimensional form to obtain simple formulas for explicit calculations of charging parameters on the surface of electrolyte -encapsulating charged particles in terms of easily measurable properties of the electrolyte solution, the size of the cavity, and thermodynamic conditions. This predictive capability of the new models will significantly reduce the time, costs, and efforts required to simultaneously characterize the size and charging parameters of particles because it removes the need for such a challenging measurement as charging parameters are explicitly related to particle size through thermodynamic conditions, as well as available or easy-to-measure properties of the solution.
Local Structure-Preserving Relaxation Method for Charged Systems on Unstructured Meshes

Abstract:This work considers charged systems described by the modified Poisson--Nernst--Planck (PNP) equations, which incorporate ionic steric effects and the Born solvation energy for dielectric inhomogeneity. Solving the steady-state modified PNP equations poses numerical challenges due to the emergence of sharp boundary layers caused by small Debye lengths, particularly when local ionic concentrations reach saturation. To address this, we first reformulate the steady-state problem as a constraint optimization, where the ionic concentrations on unstructured Delaunay nodes are treated as fractional particles moving along edges between nodes. The electric fields are then updated to minimize the objective free energy while satisfying the discrete Gauss's law. We develop a local relaxation method on unstructured meshes that inherently respects the discrete Gauss's law, ensuring curl-free electric fields. Numerical analysis demonstrates that the optimal mass of the moving fractional particles guarantees the positivity of both ionic and solvent concentrations. Additionally, the free energy of the charged system consistently decreases during successive updates of ionic concentrations and electric fields. We conduct numerical tests to validate the expected numerical accuracy, positivity, free-energy dissipation, and robustness of our method in simulating charged systems with sharp boundary layers.

Abstract:Surface charges of particles together with the adsorbed counter ions in diffuse layer can set up a strong electrostatic field around the particles in aqueous solution. The existent kinetic models for describing cation exchange on solid/liquid interface were either empirical or semi-empirical, and in which the electrostatic field is not considered. In this paper, as considering the important effect of electrostatic field around particles on cations adsorption/desorption, for the first time the dynamic distribution equations of cations in diffuse layer for adsorption and desorption processes in both flow method and batch technique have been established. Those equations clearly show how the cation concentration changes with time in different position of diffuse layer during the cation exchange process, and the corresponding new kinetic models have been obtained upon them. The new models indicate that, in both flow method and batch technique, for the adsorption process, experimental results should appear zero order kinetic process caused by the strong force adsorption in the initial stage of adsorption, and then transform to the first order kinetic process of the weak force adsorption; and for the desorption process, however, only first order kinetic process may exist. The new models are essentially different from the classic apparent or empirical kinetic models since all the parameters have their defined physical meanings in the new models, thus the rate parameters in the new models have the potential to theoretically predict. Theoretical analyses also indicated that, the adsorption/desorption rate in flow method experiment will be much higher than that in batch technique experiment.

Abstract:In particle method, the number of particles is an important factor affecting the computational efficiency. For the free-surface flow, gas particles are usually necessary for surface tension calculation, but they have little impact to the liquid flow with a large density. If the free surface tension can be modeled without considering gas particles, it is of great significance to improve the computational efficiency. The existing potential-based surface tension model and the stress-based surface tension model don't need gas particles, but they have the problems of instability or are difficult to implement. Therefore, in this study, another free surface tension calculation method by coupling particles and grids is proposed. In the method, background mesh is applied to the entire computational domain, where the boundary of grid is extended outward by 3.1 l 0 on the basis of particle boundary for curvature calculation. The level-set function is adopted to mark different phases on background mesh, whose value is set according to the normal distance between the grid and the nearest free surface particle. After obtaining the curvature and the level-set function gradient on background mesh, these variables are interpolated to corresponding particles to calculate the surface tension. Through the comparative study of area-weighted and distance-weighted interpolation schemes, it is found that the accuracy of distance-weighted interpolation scheme is higher than that of area-weighted interpolation scheme. Finally, the performance of the particle-grid hybrid method is verified by simulating four benchmark cases, including droplet oscillations, droplet spreading, capillary jet breakup and droplet impinging onto plate.

Abstract:The multi-scale flow mechanism is crucial for the force and heat loaded on near-space vehicles, the control of spacecraft, and the propelling and cooling of microelectromechanical systems. Since the continuum and rarefied flows often coexist, the prediction of multi-scale flow is complicated. One efficient way is constructing numerical methods by adopting the multi-scale temporal integral solutions (or characteristic line solutions) for model equations in the gas-kinetic theory. The model equations can be classified into the Fokker–Planck type and Bhatnagar–Gross–Krook type (BGK-type). Since these numerical methods are strictly based on model equations, they are also restricted by the model equations. The difficulty in constructing a model equation that has complete asymptotic preserving property for gas mixture with non-equilibrium internal energy will prevent the further extension of these methods. Therefore, this paper addresses the question whether a multi-scale numerical method can be established by directly adopting the relaxation rates of macroscopic variables, such as stress and heat flux, because these relaxation rates are the aggregate effect of particle collisions and are the essential constrains when constructing model equations. Since the particle-BGK method is concise, its collision term is replaced by the direct relaxation process, where the macroscopic variables first evolve according to their relaxation rates, and then, the after-collision molecules get their velocities from the after-evolution macroscopic variables. Therefore, the modified particle-BGK method does not depend on model equations. Finally, the validity and accuracy of the present method are examined with homogenous relaxation case, shock tube, shock structure, cavity flow, and hypersonic cylinder flow in transitional regime.
A New Surface Tension Formulation for Particle Methods

Abstract:In this paper, a new formulation based on the continuum surface force model (CSF) is developed for particle methods. In the new formulation, two measures are taken to amend the two drawbacks faced by previous formulations of the CSF model. One measure is that the interface curvature is calculated using the surface divergence of the unit normal instead of the divergence as done in previous formulations. This measure completely removes errors artificially stemming from interior particles that are caused by numerical discretization. Another measure taken is that the size of the particle interaction domain is determined based on the physical characteristic length, rather than taken as a fixed multiple of the particle spacing, as in previous formulations. This treatment is based on the knowledge of the nature of the fractional dimensionality of the surface/curve, for which the measured values of macroscopic characteristics are dependent on the measurement scale. Through the curvature calculation of a unit circle, the relation between the size of the particle interaction domain and the critical size of droplet/bubble breakup is established. The former, which is taken as approximately 0.38 times the latter, is accurate enough to obtain a reasonable interface curvature, even with severe irregularity. The new formulation is tested and verified using three numerical cases, including the oscillation and decay of a square drop under surface tension, the coalescence of two drops after a head-on collision, and the Rayleigh-Taylor instability. It is shown that the new formulation is robust and accurate in calculating the surface tension and is able to adapt to different situations. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Surface electric charge of dispersed particles is an essential determinant of physicochemical properties, coagulation and flocculation processes, and stability of colloidal solutions. Size-dependence of surface potential, charge density, and total surface charge of suspended charged particles has recently received attention in the literature. Despite the clear significance of understanding such dependence, very few studies have been devoted to this problem, with contradictory results of the relationship type. Currently, there is no analytical formula to represent explicit relationships between surface charging parameters and particle size. This research work is directed at development of accurate physics-based formulas for quantification of curvature-dependence of surface potential, surface charge density, and total surface charge for cylindrical and spherical charged particles immersed in a symmetrical electrolyte solution. First, a non-dimensional approach is adopted to simplify the problems, overcoming the difficulty of dealing with multiple influential variables. Then, to reduce the degrees of freedom of the problems under consideration, Gauss's law is combined with the condition of electro-neutrality in an electrical double layer (EDL). Next, the resulting complex integral equations are solved to construct characteristic curves and to express the dimensionless surface charging parameters explicitly as a function of the dimensionless particle radius. The new theoretical expressions are founded on approximate analytical and numerical solutions of the nonlinear Poisson-Boltzmann (PB) equation in cylindrical and spherical geometries. Afterwards, the solutions of the non-dimensionalized problems are dimensionalized to derive accurate explicit closed-form expressions, describing how surface charging parameters are related to the radius of a charged particle, properties of the solution, and thermodynamic conditions. These analytical formulas enable researchers to properly determine surface potential, surface charge density, total surface charge, and radius of dispersed particles by characterizing only one of them. Finally, the validity of the commonly-held hypothesis that surface charge density is independent of particle size is examined at the end of this study.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the mathematical modeling and numerical approximation for the fluid-surfactant phase field model coupled with the Navier–Stokes equations on surfaces. Taking account of the effect of the curvature and fluid flows, we first propose the incompressible Navier–Stokes fluid-surfactant phase field model on surfaces. Then, by introducing two power-type scalar auxiliary variables in the phase field equations for the potential energy terms and an exponential-type one in the momentum equation with respect to the inertial term, we transform the proposed model to an equivalent form. Furthermore, with the help of the derived three scalar auxiliary variables (3-SAV) equations, via utilizing the pressure correction method and implicit–explicit techniques in a proper sequence to eliminate the influence of the skew-symmetric loss in the surface finite element method, and applying stabilized methods for the convective and diffusion terms in the phase field and momentum equations according to the feature of the velocity field on surfaces respectively, we construct a linearized and decoupled fully discrete scheme, in which only some linear equations need to be solved at each time step. The unconditional energy stability of the fully discrete scheme is also proved. Finally, we show some numerical examples to verify the rationality of the model and the efficiency of the scheme, and discuss the influence of the geometric curvature and fluid flows on the system.

Abstract:We use an energetic variational approach to derive a new hydrodynamic model, which could be called a generalized Poisson–Nernst–Planck–Navier–Stokes system. Such the system could describe the dynamics of the compressible conductive fluid with the dilute charged particles and be used to analyze the interactions between the macroscopic fluid motion and the microscopic charge transportation. Then, we develop a general method to obtain the unique local classical solution, the unique global solution under small perturbations and the optimal decay rates of the solution and its derivatives of any order.
Validation of Unipolar Diffusion Charging Models for Spherical and Agglomerated Nanoparticles

Abstract:An ion-jet diffusion charger was used in this study to investigate the diffusion charging of spherical and agglomerated nanoparticles, and validate corresponding theoretical models. Results show that the limiting-sphere model and White’s theory could preferably predict the diffusion charging of spherical particles, compared with other models. As to agglomerated particles, it is affected by primary particle size and sintered morphology to some extent. Especially for loose agglomerate which is point-to-point contact, obviously more charges could be acquired at same mobility diameter in unipolar diffusion charger. In addition, it was validated that all of Chang’s theory, normalized capacitance model and collision kernel model are in good agreement with experiments results. Chang’ theory and normalized capacitance model, however, are more concise and could be used to evaluate diffusion charging of non-spherical particles in real occasions.

Abstract:Exactly measuring droplet charging is the key to fre ef orm fabrication by use of droplet spray.In this work, an electrostatic model of droplet charging is developed, and an algorithm for exactly predicting the cha rging on the droplet is presented, which reflects the electrostatic effects bet ween droplets.The droplet charging model is solved in different conditions by fi nite element method (FEM).The charging amount is predicted with the algorithm ba sing on the FEM results.The relationship between the charging voltage and the ch arging are established in different disturbance frequencies.The results of simul ation agree well with those of experiment and prove to be superior to those repo rted in the literature.
New Model for Particle Removal from Surface in Presence of Deformed Liquid Bridge

Abstract:Despite the importance of removing particles from surfaces, particularly in the presence of liquid bridge, the process is yet to be investigated properly. In this research, this important process is explored and a mathematical model is presented that predicts the fluid velocity required to initiate the motion of a particle embraced by a liquid bridge. The model succeeds in incorporating (i) the liquid-bridge deformation due to the fluid flow and (ii) the associated detachment and lateral adhesive forces that depend on the surface characteristics. The model can also predict two types of particle motion, namely rolling and sliding. The removal of silica and ice particles is examined experimentally and the results are compared with the model predictions, thereby confirming the accuracy of the model. The present findings suggest a strong influence of the adhesive forces generated by the liquid bridge as the main forces resisting the removal of the particle from the surface. This study has implications in furthering the understanding of the underlying mechanisms during the removal of particles from surfaces exposed to fluid flow.
KINETIC MODELING OF CONSTITUTIVE RELATIONS FOR PARTICLE MOTION IN LOW TO MODERATELY CONCENTRATED FLOWS

Abstract:Formulating underlying mechanisms of concentrated solid-liquid flows is essential for simulation of various industrial processes and natural phenomena. A generalized constitutive model for particle motion in flows with low to moderate solids concentrations is developed. This generalized model facilitates characterization of inelastic collisions, particle-fluid interactions, and shearing effects. Moderately concentrated simple shear flows of a sand-water mixture are analyzed, and comparisons of model predictions and experimental data are in good agreement. This model exhibits sound performance in characterizing particle motion for wide ranges of concentration and shear rate, and may supply a reasonable and competent alternative to previous models developed for dilute and rapid-granular flows when applied to moderately concentrated situations. The concentration approaches zero (C → 0) asymptote is observed at a relatively high shear rate in model predictions. Assumption of low collisional dissipation of the particle phase as C → 0 is more reasonable for this observation, compared to that without the interstitial fluid effect. Accurately modeling energy dissipation is important for characterizing the stability of dilute simple shear flows of solid-liquid mixtures. Incorporating friction forces will also facilitate improvement of the applicability of this generalized model to flows at extremely high concentrations.
