Abstract:Bhaskaran constructed the genus field of any algebraic number field as the main result in J. of Number Theory 11 (1979), 488–497. The present paper exhibits a counterexample showing that that construction contains mistakes. We then give a corrected version.

Abstract:> Let K be a subfield with odd degree of Q(ξ q ), for arbitrary prime q or a cyclic fieldof degree p with arbitrary conductor f(K) and any odd prime p. We denote by X(K) thearithmetic genus of the Hilbert modular variety over K. We prove in this paper that X(K)<0 for these two kinds of number field K except 6 fields, i.e. the cubic cyclic fields K withconductors 7,9,13,19(X(K) = 1); and 37(X(K) = 0); the field K = Q(ξ 11 + ξ 11 -1 )(X(K) = 1).

Abstract:Let k = Q(√u) (u ≠ 1 squarefree), K any possible cyclic quartic field containing k. A close relation is established between K and the genus group of k. In particular: (1) Each K can be written uniquely as K = Q(√vwη), where η is fixed in k and satisfies η ⪢ 1, (η) = U2√u, |U2| = |(√u)|, (v, u) = 1, v ∈ Z is squarefree, w|u, 0 < w < √u. Thus if u ≠ a2 + b2, there is no K ⊃ k. If u = a2 + b2 then for each fixed v there are 2g − 1K ⊃ k, where g is the number of prime divisors of u. (2) Kk has a relative integral basis (RIB) (i.e., OK is free over Ok) iff N(ε0) = −1 and w = 1, where ε0 is the fundamental unit of k, (or, equivalently, iff K = Q(√vε0√u), (v, u) = 1). (3) A RIB is constructed explicitly whenever it exists. (4) disc(K) is given. In particular, the following results are special cases of (2): (i) Narkiewicz showed in 1974 that Kk has a RIB if u is a prime; (ii) Edgar and Peterson (J. Number Theory 12 (1980), 77–83) showed that for u composite there is at least one K ⊃ k having no RIB. Besides, it follows from (4) that the classification and integral basis of K given by Albert (Ann. of Math. 31 (1930), 381–418) are wrong.

Abstract:In this work we develop, through a governing field, genus theory for a number field $\K$ with tame ramification in $T$ and splitting in $S$, where $T$ and $S$ are finite disjoint sets of primes of $\K$. This approach extends that initiated by the second author in the case of the class group. It allows expressing the $S$-$T$ genus number of a cyclic extension $Ł/\K$ of degree $p$ in terms of the rank of a matrix constructed from the Frobenius elements of the primes ramified in $Ł/\K$, in the Galois group of the underlying governing extension. For quadratic extensions $Ł/\Q$, the matrices in question are constructed from the Legendre symbols between the primes ramified in $Ł/\Q$ and the primes in $S$.

The genus of division algebras over discrete valued fields

Abstract:Given a field with a set of discrete valuations $V$, we show how the genus of a division algebra over the field is related to the genus of the residue algebras at various valuations in $V$ and the ramification data. When the division algebra is a quaternion, we show the triviality of genus over many fields which include higher local fields, function fields of curves over higher local fields and function fields of curves over real closed fields. We also consider function fields of curves over global fields with a rational point and show how the genus problem is related to the $2$-torsion of the Tate-Shafarevich group of its Jacobian. As a special case, we show how the methods developed yield better bounds on the size of the genus over function fields of elliptic curves and demonstrate how they can be computed directly using arithmetic data of the elliptic curve with a number of examples.

Abstract:We give three examples of fields concerning the Northcott property on elements of small height: The first one has the Northcott property but its Galois closure does not satisfy the Bogomolov property. The second one has the Northcott property and is pseudo-algebraically closed, i.e. every variety has a dense set of rational points. The third one has bounded local degree at infinitely many rational primes but does not have the Northcott property.

First we define the extended genus field of a global function field and we obtain, via class field theory, the description of the extended genus field of an arbitrary global function field. Abstract:We investigate the failure of a local-global principle with regard to "containment of number fields"; i.e., we are interested in pairs of number fields $(K_1,K_2)$ such that $K_2$ is not a subfield of any algebraic conjugate $K_1^\sigma$ of $K_1$, but the splitting type of any single rational prime $p$ unramified in $K_1$ and in $K_2$ is such that it cannot rule out the containment $K_2\subseteq K_1^\sigma$. Examples of such situations arise naturally, but not exclusively, via the well-studied concept of arithmetically equivalent number fields. We give some systematic constructions yielding "fake subfields" (in the above sense) which are not induced by arithmetic equivalence. This may also be interpreted as a failure of a certain local-global principle related to zeta functions of number fields.

Abstract:We prove the genus-one restriction of the all-genus Landau-Ginzburg/Calabi-Yau conjecture of Chiodo and Ruan, stated in terms of the geometric quantization of an explicit symplectomorphism determined by genus-zero invariants. This provides the first evidence supporting the higher-genus Landau-Ginzburg/Calabi-Yau correspondence for the quintic threefold, and exhibits the first instance of the "genus zero controls higher genus" principle, in the sense of Givental's quantization formalism, for non-semisimple cohomological field theories.

Abstract:The Hilbert genus field of the real biquadratic field K=ℚ(√(δ),√(d)) is described by Yue (Ramanujan J 21:17–25, 2010 ) and by Bae and Yue (Ramanujan J 24:161–181, 2011 ) explicitly in the case δ =2 or p with p≡ 1 mod 4 a prime and d a squarefree positive integer. In this article, we describe explicitly the case that δ =p, 2p or p_1p_2 where p , p_1 , and p_2 are primes congruent to 3 modulo 4 , and d is any squarefree positive integer, thus complete the construction of the Hilbert genus field of real biquadratic field K=K_0(√(d)) such that K_0=ℚ(√(δ)) has an odd class number.
