Abstract:Three open-framework iron phosphites: Feп5(NH4)2(HPO3)6 (1), Feп2Fe♯(NH4)(HPO3)4 (2) and Fe♯2(HPO3)3 (3) have been synthesized under ionothermal conditions. How the different synthesis parameters, such as the gel concentrations, synthetic times, reaction temperatures and solvents affect the products have been monitored by using high-throughput approaches. Within each type of experiment, relevant products have been investigated. The optimal reaction conditions are obtained from a series of experiments by high-throughput approaches. All the structures are determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and further characterized by PXRD, TGA and FTIR analyses. Magnetic study reveals that those three compounds show interesting magnetic behavior at low temperature.

Abstract:A three-dimensional iron phosphite, NH4 center dot [(Fe2FeIII)-Fe-II(HPO3)(4)], has been synthesized under mild hydrothermal conditions and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The compound crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/c, with unit cell parameters, a = 12.4397(3) angstrom, b = 10.1642(3) angstrom, e = 9.3201(3) angstrom, and Z = 4. The compound forms three-dimensional framework with six-membered channels along the c-axis. The Fe center in the framework adopts slightly distorted octahedral coordination geometry and is bridged by the pseudo-pyramidal phosphites. Magnetic measurement indicates the anti-ferromagnetic interactions in the title compound. (C) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The replacement of phosphate with phosphite in the transition metal phosphates has attracted more and more research efforts. To date, only a few phosphite materials containing Fe cation have been reported. Our group has developed the hydrothermal synthesis of many novel metal phosphites. Here we reported another three-dimensional iron phosphites (H3O)2·[Fe5 II (HPO3)6] synthesized under mild hydrothermal conditions and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The title compound crystallized in the trigonal space group P3cl, with unit cell parameters, a=l.0269(5) nm, b=1.0269(5) nm, c=0.9295(6) nm, and Z=2. The compound formed three-dimensional frameworks with six-membered channels along the c axis. The Fe centers in the frameworks adopted slightly distorted octahedral coordination geometry and were bridged by the pseudo-pyramidal phosphites. The temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility measurements for the title compound indicates the occurrence of antimagnetic interaction between Fe ions. Neel's temperature for the title compound is 6.43 K. Above Neel's temperature materials have paramagnetic behavior which obeys to Curie-Weiss equation. The Curie constant is 23.4 emu·K-1·mol-1. The effective magnetic moment of the compound at 300 K is 4.25 μB per Fe2+.

Abstract:Three new metal phosphate-oxalates, namely, (H(2)dmp)(0.5)center dot Mn(H2PO4)(C2O4) (1), and H2R center dot In-2(HPO4)(2)(H2PO4)(2)(C2O4)center dot H2O (R = dmp (2) and dmapa (3)) were prepared under solvent-free conditions, where dmp = 1,4-dimethylpiperazine and dmapa = 3-(dimethylamino)-1-propylamine. Compound 1 has a layered structure with an sql net. Compounds 2 and 3 are isostructural and have large 16-ring channels with a zeolitic crb net. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility of compound 1 and the photoluminescent property of compound 3 were investigated.

Abstract:Functional nanosized cage complexes with an octahedral framework have been synthesized by the facile self-assembly reactions of six 90 PdII-containing compounds {[Pd(dppf)(OTf)(2)] or [Pd(PPh3)(OTf)(2)], dppf = 1,1'-bis(diphenylphosphanyl) ferrocene, OTf = trifluoromethylsulfonate} and four 120 degrees functional tritopic ligands [2,4,6-tri(4-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine] in acetone. Diffusion-ordered NMR spectroscopy (DOSY) and AFM images clarify the formation of 3-4 nm nanoparticles. These highly symmetrical cage complexes are discrete, face-directed, functional nanoparticles with symmetrical octahedral structures. The self-assembled functional cage complexes exhibit interesting electrochemical activities, and thus will potentially be useful in the catalysis of redox reactions, the encapsulation of sizeable guest molecules and the control of organic synthetic reactions.

Abstract:Powder iron phosphide (FeP) has been prepared via a benzene-thermal synthesis with the reaction of anhydrous iron chloride (FeCl3) and sodium phosphide (Na3P) at 180–190°C. The product was analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and the results show the mole ratio of Fe:P is 1.12. X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern can be indexed to the orthorhombic cell of FeP with the lattice constant a=5.191, b=3.101, and c=5.789 Å. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) images indicate that average particle size is about 200 nm in diameter.

Abstract:Under hydrothermal conditions, a new iron (II) diphosphonate namely [NH3(CH2) 5NH3] [Fe2 II {03PC(CH3) (OH) (PO3H)}2] · 2H2O was synthesized and structurally characterized. The compound contains covalent double chains of [Fe2 II {O3PC(CH3) (OH) PO3H}2]n 2n-, charge balanced by the protonated pentamethylenediamine. The double chains are held together by very strong hydrogen bonds, forming a three-dimensional open network. Weak ferromagnetic coupling is observed for the compound.

Abstract:Two iron diphosphonates, [NH3(CH2)2NH3][FeII{HO3PC (CH3)(OH)(PO3H)}2] ·2H2O (1) and [NH3(CH2)2NH2(CH2)2 NH3][FeIII{O3PC(CH3)(OH)(PO3H)}2]·H2O (2), have been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. Crystal data: 1, monoclinic, C2/c, a=24.754(5), b=5.331(1), c=16.010(3) Å, β=117.787(3)°, V=1868.9(6) Å3, Z=4, R1=0.0321; 2, orthorhombic, Pbcn, a=22.128(4), b=9.9479(9), c=19.110(2) Å, V=4206.7(9) Å3, Z=8, R1=0.0389. Both show chain structures in which anionic chains of [FeII{HO3PC(CH3)(OH) (PO3H)}2]n2n − in 1 or [FeIII{O3PC(CH3)(OH)(PO3H)}2]n3n− in 2 are composed of {FeIIO6} or {FeIIIO6} octahedra and {CPO3} tetrahedra alternatively. The protonated organic amines and lattice water are located between the chains with extensive hydrogen bonding interactions. Weak antiferromagnetic exchange couplings are propagated between the magnetic centers through the O–P–O bridges in both cases.

Abstract:Two composite solids consisting of one-dimensional mixed-valence iron and molybdenum phosphates with metal complexes, [(C10H8N2)(3)Fe-II](3)(F2Fe2MO24V)-Fe-II-M-III(H2PO4)(8)(HPO4)(4)(PO4)(4)O-48(OH)(12)(H2O)(4) . 12H(2)O (1) and [(C10H8N2)(3)Fe-II](2)(FeFeMO12V)-Fe-II-M-III(H2PO4)(2)(H2-xPO4)(H1+xPO4)(HPO4)(2)(PO4)(2)O-24(OH)(6)(H2O)(2). 9H(2)O (x = 0-1) (2), in which the one-dimensional inorganic anions are constructed of alternating [Fe-II(P8Mo12)] units and Fe-III ions, were synthesized by hydrothermal reaction of MoO3, H3PO4, Fe-2(C2O4)(3) . 5H(2)O,2,2'-bipyridine, H2C2O4 . 2H(2)O and H2O, and characterized by elemental analysis and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Though the non-hydrogen atomic ratios among Mo, Fe, P, O in the anionic chains are the same, the protonation of the PO4 groups is different in 1 and 2, with the result that the anionic chains carry different charges and subsequently give rise to different numbers of Fe-II(2,2'-bipyridine)(3) per {Fe-2(III)[Fe-2(II)(P16Mo24V)]} unit.

Abstract:By ionothermal synthesis method, a series of syntheses have been performed in an attempt to synthesize novel zirconium phosphate materials in an oxalic acid/tetrapropyl ammonium bromide ionic eutectic mixture. The two different zirconium phosphate materials, alpha-Zr(HPO(4))(2)center dot H(2)O and (NH(4))Zr(2)(PO(4))(3) have been achieved by changing the synthetic conditions, tetrapropyl ammonium cation could not play its template role to form a new zirconium phosphate and the latter was synthesized at a high temperature (220 degrees C) by templating the NH(4)(+) cation in situ generated from the ionothermal decomposition of the tetrapropyl ammonium (TPA) component. However, after adding a small amount of N-containing heterocyclic compound (piperazine), a known open-framework zirconium phosphate with 8-ring pore channels was obtained. The protonated piperazine not only plays a template role to form the zirconium phosphate framework but also acts as counter-ions to balance the anion framework. The used deep-eutectic solvent, therefore, can be used as an excellent ionic reaction medium to synthesize zirconium phosphate materials, the organic amine could be added to the initial reaction mixture to induce zirconium phosphate framework.

Abstract:Treatments of Mn(O(2)CR)(2) (R = Me, Ph) with NBu(4)MnO(4) in CH(3)CN or CH(3)CN/CH(2)Cl(2) in the presence of acetic acid, delta(1)-cyclohexenephosphonic acid (C(6)H(9)PO(3)H(2)), and 2,2'-bipyridine or 1,10-phenanthroline result in three novel dodecamanganese(III) clusters [Mn(12)O(8)(O(2)CMe)(6)(O(3)PC(6)H(9))(7)(bipy)(3)] (1), [Mn(12)O(8)(O(2)CPh)(6)(O(3)PC(6)H(9))(7)(bipy)(3)] (2), and [Mn(12)O(8)(O(2)CPh)(6)(O(3)PC(6)H(9))(7)(phen)(3)] (3). They have a similar Mn(12) core of [Mn(III)(12)(mu(4)-O)(3)(mu(3)-O)(5)(mu-O(3)P)(3)] with a new type of topologic structure. Solid-state dc magnetic susceptibility measurements of complexes 1-3 reveal that dominant antiferromagnetic interactions are propagated between the magnetic centers. The ac magnetic measurements suggest an S = 2 ground state for compounds 1 and 3 and an S = 3 ground state for compound 2.

Abstract:Two novel phosphonate compounds, (Cu2CuII)-Cu-I[(3-C5H4N)CH(OH)PO3](2) (1) and Zn[(3-C5H4N)CH(OH)PO3] ( 2), have been synthesized by solvothermal reactions of the corresponding metal salts with [hydroxy(3-pyridyl)methyl]phosphonic acid. Compound 1 contains inorganic chains made up of (CuO4)-O-II planes and CPO3 tetrahedra through corner sharing. These chains are connected by (CuON)-O-I units through pyridine rings, forming a 3D open framework structure. Compound 2 adopts a new type of pillared layered structure. The inorganic layer contains 8- and 16-membered rings made up of ZnO3N and CPO3 tetrahedra. Pyridine rings are fixed between the inorganic layers through covalent bonds. The magnetic study shows that weak ferromagnetic interactions are mediated between magnetic centers in compound 1.

Abstract:An ore-bridged binuclear iron(III) complex, [Fe(phen)(2)PhCOO]2OCl2 . 7H(2)O, was synthesized and the crystal structure indicated that two octahedrally coordinated iron(III) ions bridged with oxygen atoms formed a non-linear complex. The bond angle of Fe-O-Fe is 155.6 degrees. The studies of magnetic properties showed that there was strong antiferromagnetic superexchange coupling (J = -80.8 cm(-1)) between two S = 5/2 iron(III) ions.

Abstract:Two manganese phosphate-oxalates, namely, H2aep·Mn2(H2PO4)2(C2O4)2·H2O (1) and H2epip·Mn2(H2PO4)2(C2O4)2 (2), were prepared under solvent-free conditions, where aep=1-(2-aminoethyl)piperazine and epip=1-ethylpiperzaine. The two hybrid solids have three-dimensional open-framework structures with 12-, and 16-ring channels, respectively. Topological analysis reveals that they have 4-connected lon and mog nets. The magnetic properties of the two compounds were also investigated.

Abstract:This communication reports the first example of cyclic ferric clusters with an odd number of iron atoms capped by phosphonate ligands, namely, [Fe9(mu-OH)(7)(mu-O)2(O3PC6H9)8(py)12]. The magnetic studies support a S = 1/2 ground state with an exchange coupling constant of about J approximately equal to -30 K.

Abstract:A phosphonic acid, 4-(1,2,4-triazol-4-yl)phenylphosphonic acid (H2ptz) was used as a new ligand to construct magnetic materials, by which two 2-dimensional (2D) layered metal phosphonates, [M5(Hptz)2(ptz)4]n (where M=Co(II) (1) and Mn(II) (2)) have been hydrothermally synthesized. Both compounds were characterized by elemental analyses, infrared spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction and X-ray single-crystal diffraction. Structure analyses reveal that 1 and 2 are isostructures, where the metal and ptz ligands form M5(Hptz)2(ptz)4 subunits, which are further linked together into a 2-D layered structure. The magnetism studies over the temperature range 2–300K showed pronounced antiferromagnetic interactions between the combined oxo- and diazo-bridged metal centers in both 1 and 2.
