Abstract:The velvetleaf seeds were used to study the effect of seed germination rate on the light,temperature,pH and temperature of soaking.The results showed that velvetleaf seeds need light.The germination rate was higher under temperature 15-30℃ and pH 4-8 and to use 30-60℃ warm water soaking of velvetleaf seeds.

Abstract:The effects of different agents on seed germination and growth characteristics of tobacco cultivars with different cold tolerance were researched in this paper.Seeds of two tobacco cultivars with different cold tolerance were soaked in different concentration solutions of exogenous proline,salicylic acid,calcium chloride,glycerol,dimethyl sulfoxide,ethylene glycol,polyethylene glycol,propylene glycol,uniconazole and abscisic acid.Then germination,seedling growth and physiological and biochemical changes under cold temperature stress were measured.The results showed that the germination parameters,root length,seedling length,seedling fresh and dry weight were improved,superoxide dismutase,peroxidase,catalase and ascorbate peroxidase activities of tobacco seedlings were enhanced after the treatments with proline,salicylic acid,calcium chloride,dimethyl sulfoxide and polyethylene glycol.The treatments of 10 g/L proline,120 mg/L salicylic acid,15 mg/L calcium chloride,30 ml/L dimethyl sulfoxide and 100 ml/L polyethylene glycol had better effects,it suggests that these treatments can be used to improve cold tolerance of tobacco seeds and seedlings.
Effects of low temperature pretreatment of germinated seeds on floral bud differentiation and plant growth in radish (Raphanus sativus L)

Abstract:In order to study the effects of low temperature treatment on the floral differentiation and plant growth, germinated radish (Rapkanus sativus L. ) seeds of the winter variety 'Yi-Dian-Hong' and the spring variety 'Duan-Ye 13' were subjected to 5 ℃ or 10℃ for 10 to 40 days, the control seedlings of both cultivars were germinated at 25 ℃ and didn't subject to low temperature. After low temperature treatment, all seedlings, including the control, were transplanted into glasshouse with a warm (15 ℃) and long photoperiod (16 h) growth condition. It was found that floral bud differentiation of both radish varieties were promoted by low temperature pretreatment. The promoting effects were better when the germinated seeds were subjected to lower temperature and/or for longer treatment duration. Only 10-day pretreatment of germinated seeds at 5 ℃or 10 ℃ was enough to enhance the floral bud differentiation in the spring variety 'Duan-Ye 13', whereas at least 20-day pretreatment was required for the promotion of floral bud differentiation in the winter variety 'Yi-Dian-Hong'. On the other hand, low temperature pretreatment of germinated seeds inhibited the plant growth, including plant height, number of leaves as well as leaf length and width. The longer the treatment duration was, the stronger the inhibitions were.

Abstract:The light,temperature,pH value,planting depth,and soaking temperature that influence on the germination of datura seed were studied.The results showed that the light was disliked by the datura seeds.The Datura seeds had a higher germination rate when the temperature 21～27℃ and pH value was in the range of 4 to 8.The germination rate was significantly increased when the warm water of 40～60℃ soaking the Datura seeds.

Abstract:In the production,we know that the germination rate of gourd seeds was low,the requirements of seeds was large and the budding time was different,so it was very difficult to determine the grafting time for watermelon.In order to solve these problems,we thought up two new methods to improve the indicators of gourd seeds,one of them was alternating wet seed,the other was NaCl treatments.In our research,we studied the effects of the two methods on germination rate,germination index,vigor index and radical length of the gourd seeds.The result showed that wet and dry alternately soaking method could significantly improve germination index and vigor index of the gourd seeds,and the germination time significantly shortened.Soaking the gourd in which the optimum time of 8 hours,then the seed of the indicators was better than other treatments.Different concentrations of NaCl treatment on gourd seeds showed that the optimal NaCl concentration was about 10 mmol/L,then gourd seed germination trend,germination rate and vigor index were relatively high.

Abstract:The effects of some important factors,such as temperature,PVA,PEG,on seed germination of Lilium formolongi were studied in present paper.The results indicated that the temperature had a significant effects on germination rate and germinating viability.The treatments of constant temperature 10℃ and 5℃ to constant temperature 15℃ had the highest germination rate.The treatments of constant temperature 15℃ and 5℃ to constant temperature 20℃ had the highest germination viability.The PVA contents of 1.0%,1.5%,2.0% and the PEG contents of 20%,25%,30% had not significant effects on germination rate and germination viability.

Abstract:The effects of seed germination of Caesalpinia spinose Kuntze was studied by control experiments which were different temperature gradients,light and PEG-6000 simulations of water stress.The results showed that:(i) the suitable temperature range for seed germination was 15-30 ℃.Germination rate was above 90 %.Average rate of germination was less than 7 days.Average rate of germination took 2.77d at optimum temperature 25 ℃,and Tara seed finished germination in 5 days and the germination rate was over 99 %.In low temperature conditions,Tara seed germination was very difficult.The germination rates was only 32.5 % within one month at 5 ℃,but the germination rate could be 90.83 % after transferred to thermostat at 25 ℃ after 5 days.High temperature above 30 ℃ also was not suitable for seed germination.The germination rate was lower,embryo root was yellowed,and it was difficult for normal growth;(ii) the effect of light on Tara seed was not obvious.The light 12 hours every day or shading condition had better effect;(iii) Tara seed germination rate and average germination rate in PEG-6000 concentration 15 % following water stress had no significant changes.The germination rate could be above 87.5 %.When strengthening water stress,the germination rate sharply fell.When PEG-6000 percent was 20 %,the germination rate was 70 %.When PEG-6000 percent was 25 %,the germination rate was only 16 %.The seeds did not germinate in PEG-6000 30 %.Tara seeds could tolerate a certain level of water stress.The water potential at 25 % PEG-6000 could be the critical value for Tara seeds germination.

Abstract:Effects of low temperature and poor light on growth and photosynthesis in two pepper cultivars were studied.The re-sults showed,soaked seeds by treatment,stress of low temperature and poor light increased plant high and stem diameter,re-duced expanding speed of leaf area.But action of low temperature is more significant than poor light.Meanwhile,low tempera-ture and poor light reduced root vigor,the net photosynthetic rate and chlorophyll content.

Abstract:This study researched the effect of different light,temperature and soaking time on Dracocephalum moldavica L.seed germination.Results showed that Dracocephalum moldavica L.seed could germinate in light or dark,but light could short germinating time and increase germination energy.The suitable germination temperature interval was 10 ℃ to 35 ℃,the optimal temperature was 25 ℃.Soaking could promote Dracocephalum moldavica L.seed germinating,soaking 6 h to 12 h was suitable,seed germination energy which soaked 6h was the highest,up to 70.0%,and seeds soaked 12h,its germination percentage was the highest,up to 94.0%.

Abstract:In this paper,the the effects of temperature,light and NaCl stress on the seeds germination of Themeda japonic were studied.The results showed that the favorable temperature for their germination is 25℃,the effects of the light is insignificant,Themeda japonica seeds were non-photoblastic seeds;it was sensitive to the salt stress,and the germination capability was restrained under the salt stress,with an incerased concentration of NaCl,germination rate,germination energy,germination index were decreased.

Abstract:Danshen (Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge) seeds have the biological character of absorbing water rapidly .At 10～25℃, We put the seeds into water, after 10 minutes, the seeds weight will be about 4.5 times as itself, two hours later, it will be 10.5 times and 11.7 times as the seeds weight respectively .Temperature has no significant influent on the rate of absorbing water. The optimal temperature of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge seed germination is from 25℃ to 30℃.In the laboratory and using the filter paper bed ,at 25℃ ,grade 1 percent of seed germination is 83%,and mixture seed percent of germination is 74%.At the results also appeared that, Prefreezing, PEG4000 initiation and GA3 soaking can enhance the seeds germination capacity obviously. Using ultrasonic technique PEG initiation to treat the oneyearstored seeds, the germination capacity can get above 45%.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to determine the most suitable moisture and temperature conditions for seed germination of Festuca sinensis .The germination of F .sinensis seeds was evaluated at 15,20,and 25℃, and under different moisture conditions imposed using various concentrations of polyethylene glycol (PEG). The F .sinensis seeds showed different germination features under different moisture and temperature condi-tions.The highest germination rate was at 25℃ and the lowest was at 15℃,suggesting that higher tempera-tures are beneficial for seed germination.At 15 and 20℃,the seed germination rate,germination potential, germination index,and vigor index of seeds were significantly higher in the -0.2 MPa water treatment than in the control and the other treatments (P <0.05).These results indicated that a low PEG concentration can im-prove F .sinensis seed vigor under low temperatures.However,at 25℃,the germination rate and germination index of seeds were higher in the control than in the PEG treatments (P <0.05)suggesting that PEG inhibited the germination of F .sinensis seeds at higher temperatures.The degree of inhibition increased with increasing PEG concentrations.As the PEG concentration increased,there were decreases in the seed germination rate, germination index,plumule length,radicle length,shoot ratio of seeds,seedling moisture content,and drought resistance.Together,these results show that a low concentration of PEG can promote F .sinensis seed germination whereas high concentrations of PEG can decrease seed vigor.

Abstract:In order to explore dormancy-breaking mechanism and increase germination percentage,the effects of different temperatures of water treatments and different concentrations of IAA (indole acetic acid) on the germination process of the seeds of Angelica sinensis were studied.The results showed that soaking seeds with IAA 0.05 g · L-1 for 3 h and soaking seeds with water 60 ℃ for 2 min had the maximum germination percentages (78％ and 80％,respectively),being 1.7 and 2.5 times as high as that of the control.When soaking seeds with water 30,35,40,45,50,55,60,65,70 ℃ for 1 and 2 min,there was no significant correlation between germination percentages and temperatures,but a significant correlation was observed for 5,10 and 15 min.There was no significant correlation between germination percentage and concentration when soaking seeds 1,3,6,12 h with IAA 0.01,0.02,0.03,0.04,0.05,0.06,0.07,0.08,0.09,0.1 g · L-1.Soaking seeds with water could improve seed germination percentage,which might relate to permeability of seed coat;however,IAA could improve seed germination percentage,which might be involved in breaking seed dormancy.Consequently,soaking seeds with water 60 ℃ for 2 min and soaking seeds with IAA 0.05 g · L-1 for 3 h could improve the germination percentages of A.sinensis seeds.Compared with water,IAA pollutes the environment easily.So,soaking seeds with water is an advisable method in actual production.

Abstract:Production of high quality seeds is of fundamental importance for successful crop production. However, knowledge of the effects of increased temperature resulting from global warming on seed quality of alpine species is limited. We investigated the effect of maternal environment on seed quality of three cultivars of the leguminous forage species <i>Vicia sativa</i>, giving particular attention to temperature. Plants of each cultivar were grown at 1700 and 3000 m a.s.l., and mass, germination, electrical conductivity (EC) of leakage and longevity were determined for mature seeds. Seeds of all three cultivars produced at the low elevation had a significantly lower mass and longevity but higher EC of leachate than those produced at the high elevation, suggesting that increased temperatures decreased seed quality. However, seed viability did not differ between elevations. The effects of maternal environment on seed germination strongly depended on cultivar and germination temperature. At 10 and 15°C, seeds of "Lanjian 3" produced at high elevation germinated to higher percentages and rates than those produced at low elevation, but the opposite trend was observed at 20°C. However, for seeds of "Lanjian 1" and "Lanjian 2," no significant effect of elevation was observed in germination percentage. Our results indicate that the best environment for the production of high quality seeds (e.g., high seed mass, low EC, high seed longevity) of <i>V. sativa</i> is one in which temperatures are relatively low during seed development.

Abstract:Theses studies were conducted to clarify the germinating characteristics of seed treated with different temperature, light, and () to produce the homogeneous seedlings Angelicogigas NAKAI. The results obtained are summarized as follows: Rate and speed of germinating at were higher than and by 87.3% and 68.9% and also the required day for germination at 25°C was shortest by 14.1 days. Germination rate at the light condition was 90.7% and that at the dark was 65.7%. Germinating ability of seed stored at and for 165 days as dried states was 92.0% and 91.3%, while that at room temperature was 50.3%, but the longer storage of seed than 165 days decreased the ability. Gibberellin treatment by 10ppm to seed stored at and by 6ppm to seed stored at increased the germination rate more by 20.9% and 31.7% than nontreated seed.

Abstract:AbstrcatAfter soaking the seeds of Lagerstroemia speciosa with gibberellin (GA),rootone ABT No.6 and tap water (as control) for 12 hours,the germinations of the treated seeds were tested at room temperature,25°C,30°C and 35°C respectively.The results showed that the speed of germination and the germination rate of the seeds of Lagerstroemia speciosa increased with the rising of temperature.The optimum temperature for germination was 30°C. Gibberellin (GA) played an important role in increasing the germination rate.

Abstract:In order to understand the effects of drying temperature on the water loss and germination rates of seeds,seeds of 23 legume species were dried at (15±2)and (21±2)℃ with (15 ±3)% relative humidity be-fore they were put into the gene bank.The results showed that:1)at 11 d the water contents of 14 species met the storage standard,below 7%,while all species with the exception of Coronilla varia met the standard at (21±2)℃.2)Compared with undried seeds,the drying temperature (15±2)℃ had no effect on the seed ger-mination rates of 11 species,increased the rates of 6 species and significantly decreased the rates of 6 species. The drying temperature (21±2)℃ had no effect on 15 species,increased the germination rate of 5 species and decreased that of 3 species.In conclusion,the easily-dried seeds (Tephrosia candida ,Lotus corniculatus ,Tri-folium pratense ,Calopogonium mucunoides ,Cajanus cajan , Medicago sativa ,Astragalus adsurgens , Stylosanthes hamata ,Pueraria lobate and S .guianensias )and the relatively-easy-dried seeds (Lespedeza bi-color ,Caragana korshinskii and A.sinicus)should be dried at (15±2)℃.Seeds that are more difficult to dry (T.repens ,Macroptilium lathyroides ,Onobrychis viciifolia ,T.vesiculosm,Vicia sativa ,T.incarnatum, Hedysarum leave ,Macrotyloma uniflorum and Crotalaria pallida )should be dried at (21±2)℃.The drying temperature for C.varia,which was very difficult to dry,requires further study.
Effects of Short-Term Low Temperature on the Germination of Gynostemma Pentaphyllum Seeds

Abstract:In order to explore the method of improving the germination rate of Gynostemma pentaphyllum seeds ,we investigated the effects of different factors ,namely ,illumination and temperature ,hormone , storage ,low temperature stratification and short‐term low temperature .The results showed that the opti‐mal germination temperature ranged from 15℃ to 25 ℃ ;illumination raised the germination rate ,with the highest germination rate(31 .54 ± 2 .04)% at the optimum temperature of 20 ℃ .It was found that Cytokinins ,such as 6 BA and zeatin ,had no effect on the promotion of the germination ,and Gibberellin , like GA3 ,had almost no impact ,but GA4 promoted the germination to (54 .00 ± 2 .65)% .At 18 ℃ ,Gy‐nostemma pentaphyllum seeds were stored for 30 ,90 ,and 180 days .The results showed that appropriate storage time was conducive to break the dormancy mechanism of Gynostemma pentaphyllum seed ,but when the storage time was too long ,the germination rate declined rapidly ,or even to zero .The statistics of low temperature stratification processing showed that the effect of low temperature stratification was not obvious .Under low temperature stratification for 90 days ,the highest germination rate was only (34 . 26 ± 3 .21)% .By short‐term low temperature treatment ,it was found that short‐term low temperature (9 days of moist storage at 5 ,10 ,15 ℃) increased the germination rate to (73 .06 ± 2 .12)% ,(83 .14 ± 3 . 25)% and (72 .13 ± 3 .52)% .Comparison of storage treatment and post -storage short‐term low temper‐ature treatment showed that ,with the increase in storage time ,the germination rate decreased rapidly , w hile short‐term low temperature treatment still promoted the germination of long -stored seeds .

Abstract:Single factor randomized block design was applied to study the influence of temperature,moisture,and illumination on the germination of Penthorum chinense Pursh.,and then the optimum environmental factors could be found.The results showed that the germination of Penthorum chinense Pursh.was affected by the difference temperature,moisture and illumination.The environmental factors could effectively promote seeds germination rate,and the condition was as follows: temperature 10-15 ℃,moisture 55%,and illumination 100%.The research results would be the guidance to growing seedling of Penthorum chinense Pursh.

Abstract:The seeds of Astragalus membranaceus var.mongholicus were treated at constant and variable temperatures for different durations.The seed germination rate,germination potential,and germination index were determined,and the optimal warm water method to break seed dormancy was explored.Results showed that (1) seed dormancy was counteracted by soaking seeds with warm water,with variable temperatures better than constant temperatures.(2) The order of treatment was 60℃ ＞ 70℃ ＞ 80℃,and the germination rates were 2.87 and 2.31 times that of the control at 60℃ for 2 min and 5 min,respectively (P ＜ 0.01).(3) Treatment duration and soaking temperatures significantly affected seed germination.Compared with the control,the germination rate increased with soaking time at first,but decreased afterwards.There was a significant positive correlation between germination index and soaking temperature (P ＜ 0.01),with a correlation coefficient of-0.226,as well as between soaking temperature and germination potential and germination index,indicating that soaking seeds in warm water improved germination without damaging seed viability.
