Soft sensor enabled real-time chemical dosing control systems for wastewater treatment: From hybrid model to full-scale application

Abstract:Insufficient carbon source as electron donor for denitrification slows down nitrogen removal efficiency at wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). External carbon source is commonly dosed to the biological treatment processes to achieve the required nitrogen removal rate. However, lag and mismatch between the dosing amount and demand often occur, which not only increases the operating costs of the plant, but may also affect the subsequent nitrification reaction. Moreover, the inability to monitor the soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) in real-time hampers the accurate determination of the required dosage of external carbon sources. A soft sensor based SCOD monitoring method was developed and integrated with the mechanistic biological denitrification model to achieve real-time control of the bio-processes. Full-scale tests were carried out in practise to compare and analyze the three methods of Soft Sensor – Mechanistic (SS-M), PID methods, and manual control. The results indicate that the SS-M method can adjust the chemical doses in real time while ensuring the effluent to meet discharge requirements, reduces the chemical consumption by 20.4 % compare with PID control, and reduces the chemical consumption by 29.1 % compare with manual dosage, saving an average monthly chemical cost of 96,700 Yuan. Carbon dioxide emission and sludge yield were therefore reduced. This work provides the approach which can be widely applied as reliable dosing control systems for the automation and control of nitrogen removal processes.
