Abstract:X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were performed to investigate the critical cooling rate and thermal stability of Ti40Zr25Ni3Cu12Be20 metallic glass. The critical cooling rate for glass formation of the studied metallic glass is determined to be as low as 3.2K/s, revealing a high glass-forming ability. The activation energies of the alloy are strongly dependent on the cooling rate during rapid solidification. Compared with the ribbon sample, the bulk sample that experiences slower cooling rate during solidification contains a greater degree of medium range orders (MRO), which favors nucleation, therefore leading to its smaller activation energies.
