On the Importance of External Knowledge Linkages to the Clusters in Developing Countries

Abstract:There are many different theories about the competitive advantage of the industrial clusters.Because these studies are mainly confined to the internal relationships within the clusters,the external knowledge relationships are often ignored.We argue that the external knowledge relationships are very important to the clusters in the developing countries.In order to signify the importance of external knowledge relationships,we take a close look at the general process of the learning and knowledge creation,and summarize the characters of the clusters in the developing countries. We highlight the opportunities to the clusters in developing countries of attaining the knowledge from outside by participating in the global production networks,and discuss the interaction between the external knowledge learning and internal learning.Finally,some policy implications,stemming from our argument,are identified.
