Physical development of Uygur and Han children under 7 years old in Urumchi

Abstract:Objectives To evaluate physical development of both Uygur and Han children under 7 years old in Urumchi. Methods Using randomly stratified cluster sampling,a survey on 9684 children aged 0 to 6 years old of both Uygur and Han ethnic groups in Urumchi was made. Body weight,height,sitting-height,head circumference and chest circumference were measured to evaluate their nutrition conditions based on the Z score standard of WHO. Results Growth and development in children of Uygur and Han ethnic groups aged 0 to 6 years old are well correlated with their age. Faster growing were found in younger groups;Both weight and height of boys were greater than those of girls with the same age;There are difference between Uygur and Han children with same age and gender in sitting-height,head circumference and chest circumference;The average weight and height of Uygur and Han children aged 0 - 6 years in Urumchi met the WHO standard. Conclusions There are no significant differences in height and weight between Uygur children and Han children under 7 years old in Urumchi,but differences in sitting-height,head circumference and chest circumference were found between the two groups. Physical development has been much improved since last ten years and is trending upward. The weight and height of Urumchi children met the new WHO child growth standards,and reached the 2005 average level of children in the nine cities of China.
