Abstract:We present an introduction to cosmic inflation in the framework of Palatini gravity, which provides an intriguing alternative to the conventional metric formulation of gravity. In the latter, only the metric specifies the spacetime geometry, whereas in the former, the metric and the spacetime connection are independent variables-an option that can result in a gravity theory distinct from the metric one. In scenarios where the field(s) responsible for cosmic inflation are non-minimally coupled to gravity or the gravitational sector is extended, assumptions about the underlying gravitational degrees of freedom can have substantial implications for the observational effects of inflation. We examine this explicitly by discussing various compelling scenarios, such as Higgs inflation with non-minimal coupling to gravity, Higgs inflation with non-minimal derivative coupling, $\mathcal{R}^2$ inflation, and beyond. We also comment on reheating in these models. Finally, as an application of the general results of Palatini $\mathcal{R}^2$ inflation, we review a model of successful quintessential inflation, where a single scalar field acts initially as the inflaton and then becomes dynamical dark energy, in agreement will all experimental constraints.

Palatini inflation in models with an $R^2$ term

Abstract:The Starobinsky model, considered in the framework of the Palatini formalism, in contrast to the metric formulation, does not provide us with a model for inflation, due to the absence of a propagating scalar degree of freedom that can play the role of the inflaton. In the present article we study the Palatini formulation of the Starobinsky model coupled, in general nonminimally, to scalar fields and analyze its inflationary behavior. We consider scalars, minimally or nonminimally coupled to the Starobinsky model, such as a quadratic model, the induced gravity model or the standard Higgs-like inflation model and analyze the corresponding modifications favorable to inflation. In addition we examine the case of a classically scale-invariant model driven by the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism. In the slow-roll approximation, we analyze the inflationary predictions of these models and compare them to the latest constraints from the Planck collaboration. In all cases, we find that the effect of the $R^2$ term is to lower the value of the tensor-to-scalar ratio.

Abstract:We study single-field slow-roll inflation embedded in Palatini F(R) gravity where F(R) grows faster than R 2 . Surprisingly, the consistency of the theory requires the Jordan frame inflaton potential to be unbounded from below. Even more surprisingly, this corresponds to an Einstein frame inflaton potential bounded from below and positive definite. We prove that for all such Palatini F(R)'s, there exists a universal strong coupling limit corresponding to a quadratic F(R) with the wrong sign for the linear term and a cosmological constant in the Jordan frame. In such a limit, the tensor-to-scalar ratio r does not depend on the original inflaton potential, while the scalar spectral index n s does. Unfortunately, the system is ill-defined out of the slow-roll regime. A possible way out is to upgrade to a F(R,X) model, with X the Jordan frame inflaton kinetic term. Such a modification essentially leaves the inflationary predictions unaffected.

Abstract:We study models where a scalar field has derivative and non-derivative couplings to the Ricci tensor and the co-Ricci tensor with a view to inflation. We consider both the metric formulation and the Palatini formulation. In the Palatini case, the couplings to the Ricci tensor and the Ricci scalar give the same result regardless of whether the connection is unconstrained or the non-metricity or the torsion is assumed to vanish. When the co-Ricci tensor is included, the unconstrained case and the zero torsion case are physically different. We reduce all the actions to the Einstein frame with minimally coupled matter, and find the leading order differences between the metric case and the Palatini cases.

Abstract:The main objective of this thesis is to discuss scalar-tensor theories in the Palatini approach. Both scalar-tensor theories and Palatini formalism are means of alternating classical theory of gravity, general relativity, in order to account for phenomena being seemingly unexplainable on the ground of the Einstein theory or to serve as toy models used to test limitations of the theory in question. In the literature, both Palatini approach and scalar-tensor theories have been widely discussed, but there are very few - if none - authors writing about a merge of these two ideas. The present paper is a result of an insufficient attention given to the topic of scalar-tensor theories in Palatini formalism. In the course of the thesis action functional for scalar-tensor theories of gravity will be introduced. This action functional differs significantly from the action defined in case of scalar-tensor theories in metric approach. We aim at analysing the theory using the language of invariants, allowing us to write down all equations in a frame-independent manner. We discover that invariants defined for the metric case do not always have their counterparts in Palatini formalism. Also, two frames most frequently used in the literature are discussed: Einstein and Jordan frame. Possible applications of the theory developed in the first part of the thesis are presented. We show the equivalence between $f(R)$ and scalar-tensor theories of gravity and exploit this fact by analysing the former using methods developed for scalar-tensor theories. We conclude the thesis with calculating the Friedmann equations for an empty universe of vanishing spatial curvature and preparing set-up for analysing inflationary behaviour.

Abstract:We present the first formulation of the recently proposed $f(R,\mathcal{L}_m,T)$ theory of gravity within the Palatini formalism, a well-known alternative variational approach where the metric and connection are treated as independent variables. By applying this formalism, we derive a new set of field equations that exhibit, as expected, distinct properties compared to their metric formalism counterparts. We particularly present the Newtonian limit of this formalism, as well as the resulting Friedmann-like equations. We highlight that potential observational signatures may distinguish between the metric and Palatini frameworks. Our results open new pathways for exploring the phenomenology of modified gravity theories and their testability with observational data.

Abstract:An instability in the presence of matter in theories of gravity which include a 1/R correction in the gravitational action has been found by Dolgov and Kawasaki. In the present paper this instability is discussed for f(R) gravity in general. We focus on the Palatini formalism of the theory and it is shown that no such instability occurs in this version of f(R) gravity. The reasons for the appearance of the instability in the metric but not in the Palatini formalism are fully investigated.

Inflation with the Chern-Simons term in the Palatini formulation

Abstract:We consider the Chern-Simons term coupled to the inflaton in the Palatini formulation of general relativity. In contrast to the metric formulation, here the Chern-Simons term affects also the background evolution. We approximately solve for the connection, insert it back into the action, and reduce the order of the equations to obtain an effective theory in the gradient approximation. We consider three cases: when the connection is unconstrained, and when non-metricity or torsion is put to zero. In the first two cases, the inflaton kinetic term is modified with a term proportional to the square of the potential. For polynomial potentials dominated by the highest power of the field, the Chern-Simons term solves the problem that higher order corrections spoil the flatness of the potential. For Higgs inflation, the tensor-to-scalar ratio can as large as the current observational bound, and the non-minimal coupling to the Ricci scalar can be as small as in the metric case. The Palatini contribution cures the known instability of the tensor modes due the Chern-Simons term in the metric formulation.

Abstract:Palatini $f(R)$ gravity is probably the simplest extension of general relativity (GR) and the simplest realization of a metric-affine theory. It has the same number of degrees of freedom as GR and, in vacuum, it is straightforwardly mapped into GR with a cosmological constant. The mapping between GR and Palatini $f(R)$ inside matter is possible but at the expense of reinterpreting the meaning of the matter fields. The physical meaning and consequences of such mapping will depend on the physical context. Here we consider three such cases within the weak field limit: Solar System dynamics, planetary internal dynamics (seismology), and galaxies. After revising our previous results on the Solar System and Earth's seismology, we consider here the possibility of $f(R)$ Palatini as a dark matter candidate. For any $f(R)$ that admits a polynomial approximation in the weak field limit, we show here, using SPARC data and a recent method that we proposed, that the theory cannot be used to replace dark matter in galaxies. We also show that the same result applies to the Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld gravity. Differently from the metric $f(R)$ case, the rotation curve data are sufficient for this conclusion. This result does not exclude a combination of modified gravity and dark matter.

Abstract:In this study, we investigate a Palatini $f(R)$ gravity model featuring a quadratic term correction, aligning it with the most recent expansion rate data, with a particular focus on the latest SNIa and BAO data. Our analysis employs CC data as the fundamental dataset, complemented by contributions from the SN sample and a combination of non-overlapping transversal BAO datasets. We conduct a comprehensive MCMC analysis for each data set combination, yielding constraints on all cosmological parameters within the model. Additionally, we incorporate the latest Hubble constant value from the SH0ES Team. Finally, we present a statistical comparison between the Palatini quadratic model and $\Lambda$CDM using the AIC and BIC metrics, ultimately obtaining the constraint $|\alpha| \leq 10^{49}\,\text{m}^2$. We also stress the significance of studying stellar and substellar objects for obtaining more precise constraints on modified gravity compared to those derived from cosmological observations.

Abstract:I review recent results obtained for extensions of general relativity formulated within the Palatini formalism, an approach in which metric and connection are treated as independent geometrical entities. The peculiar dynamics of these theories, governed by second-order equations and having no new degrees of freedom, makes them specially suitable to address certain aspects of quantum gravity phenomenology, construct nonsingular bouncing cosmologies, and explore black hole interiors, which in the Reissner-Nordstrom case develop a compact core of finite density instead of a point-like singularity.

Abstract:Modern Physics Letters A, Volume 39, Issue 08, 14 March 2024. In the framework of [math] gravity theory, the slow-roll approximation of the cosmic inflation is investigated, where T is the trace of the energy–momentum tensor [math], R and [math] are the Ricci scalar and tensor, respectively. After obtaining the equations of motion of the gravitational field from the action principle in the spatially flat FLRW metric, the fundamental equations of this theory are received by introducing the inflation scalar field as the matter and taking into account only the minimum curvature-inflation coupling term. Remarkably, after taking the slow-roll approximation, the identical equations as in [math] gravity with a [math] mixing term are derived. We study several potentials of interest in different domains. We perform analytical analyzes under various approximate conditions, and present numerical results and their comparison with existing observational data at the same time. In the appendix, we analyze the behavior of the inflation scalar field under perturbation while ignoring the effect of metric perturbations. This research complements the slow-roll inflation in the modified theory of gravity.

Generalized non-local $R^2$-like inflation

Abstract:The $R^2$ inflation which is an extension of general relativity (GR) by quadratic scalar curvature introduces a quasi-de Sitter expansion of the early Universe governed by Ricci scalar being an eigenmode of d'Alembertian operator. In this paper, we derive a most general theory of gravity admitting $R^2$ inflationary solution which turned out to be higher curvature non-local extension of GR. We study in detail inflationary perturbations in this theory and analyse the structure of form-factors that leads to a massive scalar (scalaron) and massless tensor degrees of freedom. We argue that the theory contains only finite number of free parameters which can be fixed by cosmological observations. We derive predictions of our generalized non-local $R^2$-like inflation and obtain the scalar spectral index $n_s\approx 1-\frac{2}{N}$ and any value of the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r<0.036$. In this theory, tensor spectral index can be either positive or negative $n_t\lessgtr 0$ and the well-known consistency relation $r = -8n_t$ is violated in a non-trivial way. We also compute running of the tensor spectral index and discuss observational implications to distinguish this model from several classes of scalar field models of inflation. These predictions allow us to probe the nature of quantum gravity in the scope of future CMB and gravitational wave observations. Finally we comment on how the features of generalized non-local $R^2$-like inflation cannot be captured by established notions of the so-called effective field theory of single field inflation and how we must redefine the way we pursue inflationary cosmology.

Modified $f(R,G,T)$ Gravity in the Quintom model, and Inflation

Abstract:In this paper, I consider a $f(R, G, T)$ modified gravity model where $R$ represents the Ricci scalar, $G$ denotes the Gauss-Bonnet invariant, and $T$ signifies the trace of the stress-energy tensor. This model is coupled with two distinct types of scalar fields. In the flat Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) universe, the necessary conditions for a successful bounce are achieved. Under these circumstances, it is demonstrated that the equation of state (EoS) parameter cannot cross the phantom divider when only the inflaton scalar field is considered. Appropriate conditions to preserve the conservation of energy law are obtained. The absence of radiation domination is confirmed by referencing one of the collections of the Planck 2018 report. Moreover, it has been demonstrated that this is a general model, encompassing other models such as Weyl conformal geometry and the inflation epoch. Numerical calculations and graphs are used to confirm the results.

Abstract:We study quantum effects in Higgs inflation in the Palatini formulation of gravity, in which the metric and connection are treated as independent variables. We exploit the fact that the cutoff, above which perturbation theory breaks down, is higher than the scale of inflation. Unless new physics above the cutoff leads to unnaturally large corrections, we can directly connect low-energy physics and inflation. On the one hand, the lower bound on the top Yukawa coupling due to collider experiments leads to an upper bound on the non-minimal coupling of the Higgs field to gravity: ξ 108. On the other hand, the Higgs potential can only support successful inflation if ξ 106. This leads to a fairly strict upper bound on the top Yukawa coupling of 0.925 (defined in the -scheme at the energy scale 173.2 GeV) and constrains the inflationary prediction for the tensor-to-scalar ratio. Additionally, we compare our findings to metric Higgs inflation.

Abstract:It is known that the metric and Palatini formalisms of gravity theories have their own interesting features but also suffer from some different drawbacks. Recently, a novel gravity theory called hybrid metric-Palatini gravity was put forward to cure or improve their individual deficiencies. The action of this gravity theory is a hybrid combination of the usual Einstein-Hilbert action and a $f(\mathcal{R})$ term constructed by the Palatini formalism. Interestingly, it seems that the existence of a light and long-range scalar field in this gravity may modify the cosmological and galactic dynamics without conflicting with the laboratory and Solar System tests. In this paper we focus on the tensor perturbation of thick branes in this novel gravity theory. We consider two models as examples, namely, the thick branes constructed by a background scalar field and by pure gravity. The thick branes in both models have no inner structure. However, the graviton zero mode in the first model has inner structure when the parameter in this model is larger than its critical value. We find that the effective four-dimensional gravity can be reproduced on the brane for both models. Moreover, the stability of both brane systems against the tensor perturbation can also be ensured.
