Abstract:For bivariate random lifetimes, we study the role of stochastic dependence through conducting stochastic comparison on the residual life, inactivity time and some aging behavior of one marginal conditioned by the survival or failure of the other. The main results serve as essential supplement to those related ones of Bassan and Spizzichino (1999) and Longobardi and Pellerey (2019). Applications in frailty, resilience and load-sharing models are presented as well.

Abstract:This paper studies 2 different versions of the general residual lifetime at random times in the context of statistical dependence between the system lifetime and the random time. We prove that the class of residual lifetimes with a semiindependent random age is equivalent to the class of residual lifetimes at independent random times. Additionally, we conduct stochastic comparisons of the 2 versions of the general residual lifetime at random times. Several numerical examples are presented to illustrate the ordering results.

Abstract:Here, we discuss the stochastic comparison of residual lifetimes of parallel systems and inactivity times of series systems by means of the reversed hazard rate order when the components of the systems are independent but not necessarily identically distributed. We also establish some monotonicity properties of such residual lifetimes of parallel systems and inactivity times of series systems. These results extend some of the recent results in this direction due to Zhao, Li, and Balakrishnan [21], Kochar and Xu [12], and Saledi and Asadi [16].

Abstract:For components having dependent and possibly non-identically distributed lifetimes, we study the stochastic comparison between lifetimes of a used coherent system and a similar new system consisting of used components. Sufficient conditions for the usual stochastic order, the hazard rate order and the reversed hazard rate order under the situation when component lifetimes have general distribution are provided. As for proportional hazards component lifetimes, sufficient and necessary conditions guaranteeing several stochastic orders are derived, including the usual stochastic order, the hazard rate order, the reversed hazard rate order, the likelihood ratio order and the relative ageing orderings. Several numerical examples are provided for illustrations.

Abstract:Research on analysis of replacement time in standby systems has focused on systems with binary-state standby components. However, when the standby components are multi-state, the replacement time depends on the state of the standby component when it is activated for replacement. This article considers the impacts of state-dependent random replacement times on 1-out-of-N systems consisting of multi-state standby components. Numerical algorithms for evaluating the multi-state standby system’s instantaneous availability, expected availability over system mission time and the expected mission completion time are proposed. A Markov state transition model is used to describe the component behaviour in standby mode. The time-to-failure of the operating component and the replacement time of the standby component can obey arbitrary types of distributions. Illustrative examples are provided to demonstrate the proposed numerical algorithms. The effects of the number of standby components, different replacement time distributions and activation sequences are also discussed.

Abstract:In the literature on active redundancy allocation, the redundancy lifetimes are usually postulated to be independent of the component lifetimes for the sake of technical convenience. However, this unrealistic assumption leads to a risk of inaccurately evaluating system reliability, because it overlooks the statistical dependence of lifetimes due to common stresses. In this study, for k-out-of-n:F systems with component and redundancy lifetimes linked by the Archimedean copula, we show that (i) allocating more homogeneous redundancies to the less reliable components tends to produce a redundant system with stochastically larger lifetime, (ii) the reliability of the redundant system can be uniformly maximized through balancing the allocation of homogeneous redundancies in the context of homogeneous components, and (iii) allocating a more reliable matched redundancy to a less reliable component produces a more reliable system. These novel results on k-out-of-n:F systems in which component and redundancy lifetimes are statistically dependent are more applicable to the complicated engineering systems that arise in real practice. Some numerical examples are also presented to illustrate these findings.

Abstract:To measure the magnitude among random variables, we can apply a partial order connection defined on a distribution class, which contains the symmetry. In this paper, based on majorization order and symmetry or asymmetry functions, we carry out stochastic comparisons of lifetimes of two series (parallel) systems with dependent or independent heterogeneous Marshall–Olkin Topp Leone G (MOTL-G) components under random shocks. Further, the effect of heterogeneity of the shape parameters of MOTL-G components and surviving probabilities from random shocks on the reliability of series and parallel systems in the sense of the usual stochastic and hazard rate orderings is investigated. First, we establish the usual stochastic and hazard rate orderings for the lifetimes of series and parallel systems when components are statistically dependent. Second, we also adopt the usual stochastic ordering to compare the lifetimes of the parallel systems under the assumption that components are statistically independent. The theoretical findings show that the weaker heterogeneity of shape parameters in terms of the weak majorization order results in the larger reliability of series and parallel systems and indicate that the more heterogeneity among the transformations of surviving probabilities from random shocks according to the weak majorization order leads to larger lifetimes of the parallel system. Finally, several numerical examples are provided to illustrate the main results, and the reliability of series system is analyzed by the real-data and proposed methods.

Abstract:In this study, we conduct a reliability characterisation study of cold standby systems. Utilising synthetic rectangular formulas and cold preparedness equivalent models for cold standby systems, we analyse the lifetimes of several typical configurations, including series, parallel, and k/n:m voting systems. This study proposes system equivalent models for various types of cold standby systems, all composed of components that follow the same exponential distribution. We use the equivalent model to determine the optimal timing for the use of cold spares and derive the reliability function and residual lifetime function for each type of system. To demonstrate the validity of our model, the Monte Carlo simulation is strategically designed based on the system failure rate function. The experimental results are then compared with those obtained from the numerical model, highlighting that the numerical method incurs a lower time cost.

Abstract:In this article, we study a load-sharing redundancy system in the presence of statistical dependence between base and redundancy component lifetimes when they are under partial workload. We derive the system reliability function in terms of reliability functions and the copula function of the base and redundancy component lifetimes. Further, in the setting of some aging properties, the base component and absolute continuous copula, we develop the hazard rate order, the reversed hazard rate order, and the likelihood ratio order between the system lifetime and the base component lifetimes. Two typical scenarios with independence between the base and redundancy component lifetimes are discussed in particular. Several numerical examples are presented to illustrate the theoretical findings as well.

Abstract:This paper concerns the problem of predicting residual storage life for a class of highly critical systems with operation state switches between the working state and storage state. A success of estimating the residual storage life for such systems depends heavily on incorporating their two main characteristics: 1) system operation process could experience a number of state transitions between the working state and storage state; and 2) system's degradation depends on its operation states. Toward this end, we present a novel degradation model to account for the dependency of the degradation process on the system's operation states, where a two-state continuous-time homogeneous Markov process is used to approximate the switches between the working state and storage state. Using the monitored degradation data during the working state and the available system operation information, the parameters in the presented model can be estimated/updated under Bayesian paradigm. Then, the posterior probabilistic law of the number of state transitions and their transition times are derived, and further, the formulation for the predicted residual storage life distribution is established by considering the possible state transitions in the future. To be solvable, a numerical solution algorithm is provided to calculate the distribution of the predicted residual storage life. Finally, we demonstrate the proposed approach by a case study for gyroscopes.

Abstract:Abstract This article discusses the stochastic behavior and reliability properties for the inactivity times of failed components in coherent systems under double monitoring. A mixture representation of reliability function is obtained for the inactivity times of failed components, and some stochastic comparison results are also established. Furthermore, some sufficient conditions are developed in terms of the aging properties of the inactivity times of failed components. Finally, some numerical examples are presented to illustrate the theoretical results.

Abstract:Krakowski (Rev Fr Autom Inform Rech Oper. 1973;7:107-120.) introduced the relevation transform for component and active redundancy with independent lifetimes, and except for Johnson and Kotz (Am J Math Manag Sci. 1981;1:155-165; Nav Res Logist. 1983;30:163-169.) most subsequent researches were conducted under this framework. However, it is not uncommon that a component and its active redundancy bear some common stresses due to the environment and thus they have dependent lifetimes. In this note, we equip the involved lifetimes with a survival copula and then clarify the potential difference between the new and classical versions through making stochastic comparison. Moreover, by ordering the lifetime of system with relevation redundancy we also study the way of allocating a relevation redundancy at component level to ultimately improve the system reliability. The present results on series and parallel systems serve as a generalization of the corresponding ones of Belzunce et al. (Appl Stoch Models Bus Ind. 2019;35:492-503.). Several numerical examples are presented to illustrate these findings as well.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigatek-out-of-nsystems with independent and identically distributed components. Some characterizations of the IFR(2), DMRL, NBU(2) and NBUC classes of life distributions are obtained in terms of the monotonicity of the residual life given that the (n-k)th failure has occurred at timet≥ 0. These results complement those reported by Belzunce, Franco and Ruiz (1999). Similar conclusions based on the residual life of a parallel system conditioned by the (n-k)th failure time are presented as well.
