Abstract:We analyze the 2×2 nonhomogeneous relativistic Euler equations for perfect fluids in special relativity. We impose appropriate conditions on the lower order source terms and establish the existence of global entropy solutions of the Cauchy problem under these conditions.

Abstract:We are concerned in this paper with the non-relativistic global limits of the entropy solutions to the Cauchy problem of 3 × 3 system of relativistic Euler equations modeling the conservation of baryon numbers, momentum, and energy respectively. Based on the detailed geometric properties of nonlinear wave curves in the phase space and the Glimm’s method, we obtain, for the isothermal flow, the convergence of the entropy solutions to the solutions of the corresponding classical non-relativistic Euler equations as the speed of light c → +∞.

Abstract:We study the relativistic Enter equations for isentropic fluids with a general equation of state p = p(p) satisfying the genuine nonlinearity condition. For the gamma-law case (1 < gamma < 2), we establish an existence theorem for global entropy solutions to the Cauchy problem using the Glimm difference scheme. For general pressure, the nonlinear elementary waves and Riemann problem are also studied.

Abstract:We are concerned with global entropy solutions to the relativistic Euler equations for a class of large initial data which involve the interaction of shock waves and rarefaction waves. We first carefully analyze the global behavior of the shock curves, the rarefaction wave curves, and their corresponding inverse curves in the phase plane. Based on these analyses, we use the Glimm scheme to construct global entropy solutions to the relativistic Euler equations for the class of large discontinuous initial data.

Abstract:We analyze global entropy solutions of the 2 × 2 relativistic Euler equations for isentropic fluids in special relativity and establish the uniqueness of Riemann solutions in the class of entropy solutions in L ∞ ∩ BV loc with arbitrarily large oscillation. The uniqueness result does not require specific reference to any particular method for constructing the entropy solutions. Then the uniqueness of Riemann solutions implies their inviscid time-asymptotic stability under arbitrarily large L 1 ∩ L ∞ ∩ BV loc perturbation of the Riemann initial data, provided that the corresponding solutions are in L ∞ and have local bounded total variation that allows the linear growth in time. This approach is also extended to deal with the stability of Riemann solutions containing vacuum in the class of entropy solutions in L ∞ with arbitrarily large oscillation.

Abstract:The authors consider the local smooth solutions to the isentropic relativistic Euler equations in (3+1)-dimensional space-time for both non-vacuum and vacuum cases. The local existence is proved by symmetrizing the system and applying the Friedrichs-Lax-Kato theory of symmetric hyperbolic systems. For the non-vacuum case, according to Godunov, firstly a strictly convex entropy function is solved out, then a suitable symmetrizer to symmetrize the system is constructed. For the vacuum case, since the coefficient matrix blows-up near the vacuum, the authors use another symmetrization which is based on the generalized Riemann invariants and the normalized velocity.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the smooth spherically symmetric solutions to 3D relativistic Chaplygin gases with variable entropy, whose initial data is assumed to be a small smooth perturbation to a constant state. Due to the structure of the equation, we can still take advantage of the “null condition” which is satisfied by the potential equation for isentropic and spacetime irrotational relativistic Chaplygin gases and obtain the global existence of smooth solution by continuity method. This generalizes the result for classical Chaplygin gases of Godin [J Math Pures Appl 87(9):91–117, 2007 ] to the relativistic case.

Abstract:We are concerned with spherically symmetric solutions to Euler equations for multi-dimensional compressible fluids which have many applications in diverse real physical situations. The system can be reduced to one-dimensional isentropic gas dynamics with geometric source terms. Due to the presence of the singularity at the origin, there are few papers devoted to this problem. The present paper proves two existence theorems of global entropy solutions. The first one focuses on a case excluding the origin in which negative velocity is allowed, and the second one corresponds to a case which includes the origin with non-negative velocity. The compensated compactness framework and vanishing viscosity method are applied to prove the convergence of approximate solutions. In the second case, we show that if the blast wave initially moves outwards and the initial densities and velocities decay to zero with certain rates near the origin, then the densities and velocities tend to zero with the same rates near the origin for any positive time. In particular, the entropy solutions in two existence theorems are uniformly bounded with respect to time.

Abstract:We are concerned with entropy solutions of the 2×2 relativistic Euler equations for perfect fluids in special relativity. On Global Axisymmetric Solutions to 2D Compressible Full Euler Equations of Chaplygin Gases

Abstract:For 2D compressible full Euler equations of Chaplygin gases, when the initial axisymmetric perturbation of a rest state is small, we prove that the smooth solution exists globally. Compared with the previous references, there are two different key points in this paper: both the vorticity and the variable entropy are simultaneously considered, moreover, the usual assumption on the compact support of initial perturbation is removed. Due to the appearances of the variable entropy and vorticity, the related perturbation of solution will have no decay in time, which leads to an essential difficulty in establishing the global energy estimate. Thanks to introducing a nonlinear ODE which arises from the vorticity and entropy, and considering the difference between the solutions of the resulting ODE and the full Euler equations, we can distinguish the fast decay part and non-decay part of solution to Euler equations. Based on this, by introducing some suitable weighted energies together with a class of weighted L-infinity-L-infinity estimates for the solutions of 2D wave equations, we can eventually obtain the global energy estimates and further complete the proof on the global existence of smooth solution to 2D full Euler equations.

Abstract:By refining the method proposed in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2010.07660" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2010.07660">arXiv:2010.07660</a>, entropy current and entropy density for a relativistic hydrostatic equilibrium system with spherical symmetry are constructed as a non-Noether conserved charge in the Einstein gravity with cosmological constant. It is shown that the constructed entropy density satisfies both the local Euler relation and the first law of thermodynamics non-perturbatively with respect to the Newton constant. Finally the established relativistic thermodynamics is applied to one of the systems with uniform energy density as a crude model of a degenerate star and its local thermodynamic observables are determined analytically.

Abstract:We consider the Riemann problem of three-dimensional relativistic Euler equations with two discontinuous initial states separated by a planar hypersurface. Based on the detailed analysis on the Riemann solutions, special relativistic effects are revealed, which are the variations of limiting relative normal velocities and intermediate states and thus the smooth transition of wave patterns when the tangential velocities in the initial states are suitably varied. While in the corresponding non-relativistic fluid, these special relativistic effects will not occur.
Global Finite-Energy Solutions of the Compressible Euler-Poisson Equations for General Pressure Laws with Spherical Symmetry

Abstract:We are concerned with global finite-energy solutions of the three-dimensional compressible Euler-Poisson equations with gravitational potential and general pressure law, especially including the constitutive equation of white dwarf stars. We construct global finite-energy solutions of the Cauchy problem for the Euler-Poisson equations with large initial data of spherical symmetry as the inviscid limit of the solutions of the corresponding Cauchy problem for the Navier-Stokes-Poisson equations. The strong convergence of the vanishing viscosity solutions is achieved through entropy analysis, uniform estimates in $L^p$, and a more general compensated compactness framework via several new ingredients. A key estimate is first established for the integrability of the density over unbounded domains independent of the viscosity coefficient. Then a special entropy pair is carefully designed by solving a Goursat problem for the entropy equation such that a higher integrability of the velocity is established, which is a crucial step. Moreover, the weak entropy kernel for the general pressure law and its fractional derivatives of the required order near vacuum ($\rho=0$) and far-field ($\rho=\infty$) are carefully analyzed. Owing to the generality of the pressure law, only the $W^{-1,p}_{\rm loc}$-compactness of weak entropy dissipation measures with $p\in [1,2)$ can be obtained; this is rescued by the equi-integrability of weak entropy pairs which can be established by the estimates obtained above so that the div-curl lemma still applies. Finally, based on the above analysis of weak entropy pairs, the $L^p$ compensated compactness framework for the compressible Euler equations with general pressure law is established. This new compensated compactness framework and the techniques developed in this paper should be useful for solving further nonlinear problems with similar features.

Abstract:Journal of Hyperbolic Differential Equations, Volume 21, Issue 02, Page 423-500, June 2024. We prove that the time of classical existence of smooth solutions to the relativistic Euler equations can be bounded from below in terms of norms that measure the "(sound) wave-part" of the data in Sobolev space and "transport-part" in higher regularity Sobolev space and Hölder spaces. The solutions are allowed to have nontrivial vorticity and entropy. We use the geometric framework from [M. M. Disconzi and J. Speck, The relativistic Euler equations: Remarkable null structures and regularity properties, Ann. Henri Poincaré 20(7) (2019) 2173–2270], where the relativistic Euler flow is decomposed into a "wave-part", that is, geometric wave equations for the velocity components, density and enthalpy, and a "transport-part", that is, transport-div-curl systems for the vorticity and entropy gradient. Our main result is that the Sobolev norm [math] of the variables in the "wave-part" and the Hölder norm [math] of the variables in the "transport-part" can be controlled in terms of initial data for short times. We note that the Sobolev norm assumption [math] is the optimal result for the variables in the "wave-part". Compared to low-regularity results for quasilinear wave equations and the three-dimensional (3D) non-relativistic compressible Euler equations, the main new challenge of the paper is that when controlling the acoustic geometry and bounding the wave equation energies, we must deal with the difficulty that the vorticity and entropy gradient are four-dimensional space-time vectors satisfying a space-time div-curl-transport system, where the space-time div-curl part is not elliptic. Due to lack of ellipticity, one cannot immediately rely on the approach taken in [M. M. Disconzi and J. Speck, The relativistic Euler equations: Remarkable null structures and regularity properties, Ann. Henri Poincaré 20(7) (2019) 2173–2270] to control these terms. To overcome this difficulty, we show that the space-time div-curl systems imply elliptic div-curl-transport systems on constant-time hypersurfaces plus error terms that involve favorable differentiations and contractions with respect to the four-velocity. By using these structures, we are able to adequately control the vorticity and entropy gradient with the help of energy estimates for transport equations, elliptic estimates, Schauder estimates and Littlewood–Paley theory.

Abstract:In this paper we prove the existence of the unique global classical solution with small initial data to the Cauchy problem of a scalar conservation law with degenerate diffusion by establishing the uniform a priori decay estimates of solutions. In order to compensate the degeneracy on the x1 direction by the diffusion on other directions, we introduce the frequency decomposition method and obtain the low frequency estimate and the high frequency estimate of the solution by the Green's function method and energy method respectively.

Abstract:We completely resolve the global Cauchy problem for the multi-dimensional Euler-Riesz equations, where the interaction forcing is given by $\nabla (-\Delta)^{-\sigma/2}\rho$ for some $\sigma \in (0,2)$. We construct the global-in-time unique solution to the Euler-Riesz system in a $H^s$ Sobolev space under a smallness assumption on the initial density and a dispersive spectral condition on the initial velocity. Moreover, we investigate the algebraic time decay of convergences for the constructed solutions. Our results cover the both attractive and repulsive cases as well as the whole regime $\sigma \in (0,2)$.
