Abstract:Amorphous metal alloys are a kind of new catalytic materials with short-range ordered but long-range disordered structure, which exhibit attractive catalytic properties. However, the disadvantages of conventional amorphous Ni alloy materials such as small specific surface area and low thermal stability, have to be eliminated in order to substitute for the industrially important Raney Ni catalyst. To this end, we prepared amorphous Ni alloys by means of the rapid quenching technique generally adopted in the metallurgical industry. By adjusting the composition and post-treatment conditions, a series of amorphous Ni alloy (termed as SRNA) catalysts have been fabricated. The SRNA-1 catalyst is commercially applied in the hydrogenation of a number of pharmaceutical intermediates. The SRNA-2 catalyst is used in the hydrogenation of glucose to sorbitol. The SRNA-3, SRNA-4 and SRNA-5 alloys can be used for the desulfurization of transportation fuels and aromatics, among which the SRNA-5 alloy generally exhibits the highest desulfurization efficiency. Moreover, Sn-modified SRNA-3 catalyst is selective in aqueous phase reforming of biomass-derived polyols such as ethylene glycol to H-2. The SRNA-4 catalyst is used for post-hydrotreating of epsilon-caprolactam. The SRNA-5 catalyst is used in chemoselective hydrogenation of 2-ethylanthraquinone, CO methanation for the purification of H-2 and for the protection of the Pd/C catalyst from deactivation in the hydrogenation of benzoic acid. In order to fully utilize the ferromagnetic character of the SRNA series catalysts, a novel magnetically stabilized bed (MSB) reactor, a new kind of fluidized bed reactor in which the magnetic particles are suspended by applying a spatially uniform and time-invariant magnetic field oriented axially to the fluidizing fluid flow, has been developed. The MSB reactor has merits of low pressure drop and high mass transfer efficiency. Integration of the SRNA catalysts with the MSB reactor in processes of adsorptive desulfurization of gasoline and aromatics, removal of CO from H-2 by methanation and purification of epsilon-caprolactam has verified the viability of such process improvement. As compared to the conventional CO methanation process, the reaction temperature using the new process is reduced by 20 - 120 K, and the space velocity is increased by a factor of 5 - 10. The new process for the purification of epsilon-caprolactam has substantially strengthened the hydrogenation process: the volume of the MSB reactor is reduced to only 1/8 and 1/3 of those of the kettle-type reactor and the fixed-bed reactor of the same throughput, respectively.
