Abstract:This paper focuses on the stochastic observability of linear stochastic systems under access constraints, where the static communication strategy of governing the medium access by a communication sequence is adopted. The definition and criterion of stochastic observability of linear stochastic systems are discussed from information theoretic viewpoint. Analytic analysis shows that under access constraints there exists a communication sequence that can preserve the stochastic observability of the original linear system. Simulations illustrate our conclusion.
Weak Aging Properties for Coherent Systems with Statistically Dependent Component Lifetimes

Abstract:As a relevant topic in reliability theory, the preservation of aging properties under the formation of various coherent structures contributes to improving system performance through better structure design and more effective system maintenance. The classical research in this line usually focuses upon coherent systems with independent component lifetimes. Recently, some authors discussed the preservation of IFR, NBU, and DMRL in the setting of dependent component lifetimes. This paper further investigates sufficient conditions for coherent systems with dependent component lifetimes to preserve aging properties including NBUC, NBU (2), DMRL, and their dual versions. Some examples are presented to illustrate coherent structures and typical copula functions fulfilling the present sufficient conditions as well.

Abstract:With a large-scale Monte Carlo simulation, the aging of the two-dimensional dynamic Ising and XY models is numerically studied. Starting from a disordered state, the systems are quenched to critical temperature Tc and then evolve according to dynamics of model A. By calculating the autocorrelation function A(t,t′) we observe the aging phenomenon for both spin systems. Then, relatively accurate values of the dynamic critical exponent λc and z are estimated. Especially, we confirm that for the two-dimensional XY model, there is a strong logarithmic correction to scaling in the dynamic relaxation starting from a completely disordered.

Abstract:For bivariate random lifetimes, we study the role of stochastic dependence through conducting stochastic comparison on the residual life, inactivity time and some aging behavior of one marginal conditioned by the survival or failure of the other. The main results serve as essential supplement to those related ones of Bassan and Spizzichino (1999) and Longobardi and Pellerey (2019). Applications in frailty, resilience and load-sharing models are presented as well.

Abstract:This paper further studies monotone aging properties of the multivariate random lifetime. We revise the sufficient condition for the negative monotone aging property in terms of the multivariate usual stochastic order in Theorem 3.3 of Rezapour etal. (2013) and derive the condition sufficient to the multivariate monotone aging properties in terms of the upper orthant order. Also we study the upper orthant order of multivariate residual lifetimes and inactivity times from populations sharing a common Archimedean survival copula and Archimedean survival copula, respectively. Two simple applications in multivariate stress-strength and frailty models are presented as well.

Abstract:Reversed preservation properties of some negative aging conceptions are developed for the parallel and series system which are composed of independent and identical elements. If the system is of NWU(2) (IMRL, NWUC) properties then the elements is also of NWU(2) (IMRL, NWUC) properties. Reversed preservation properties of the right spread order and the total time on test transform order under the taking of maxima and minima are investigated respectively, applications in moments of NBUE ordered populations is presented as well.

Abstract:Abstract Relative ageing describes how one system ages with respect to another. The ageing faster orders are used to compare the relative ageing of two systems. Here, we study ageing faster orders in the hazard and reversed hazard rates. We provide some sufficient conditions for one coherent system to dominate another with respect to ageing faster orders. Further, we investigate whether the active redundancy at the component level is more effective than that at the system level with respect to ageing faster orders, for a coherent system. Furthermore, a used coherent system and a coherent system made out of used components are compared with respect to ageing faster orders.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigatek-out-of-nsystems with independent and identically distributed components. Some characterizations of the IFR(2), DMRL, NBU(2) and NBUC classes of life distributions are obtained in terms of the monotonicity of the residual life given that the (n-k)th failure has occurred at timet≥ 0. These results complement those reported by Belzunce, Franco and Ruiz (1999). Similar conclusions based on the residual life of a parallel system conditioned by the (n-k)th failure time are presented as well.

Abstract:For components having dependent and possibly non-identically distributed lifetimes, we study the stochastic comparison between lifetimes of a used coherent system and a similar new system consisting of used components. Sufficient conditions for the usual stochastic order, the hazard rate order and the reversed hazard rate order under the situation when component lifetimes have general distribution are provided. As for proportional hazards component lifetimes, sufficient and necessary conditions guaranteeing several stochastic orders are derived, including the usual stochastic order, the hazard rate order, the reversed hazard rate order, the likelihood ratio order and the relative ageing orderings. Several numerical examples are provided for illustrations.

We further investigate a new aging notion based upon the reversed hazard rate order between a random life and its equilibrium version. A nonparametric method is developed to test the exponentiality against such a strict aging property, some numerical results are presented as well.

Abstract:There are some connections between aging notions, stochastic orders, and expected utilities. It is known that the DRHR (decreasing reversed hazard rate) aging notion can be characterized via the comparative statics result of risk aversion, and that the location-independent riskier order preserves monotonicity between risk premium and the Arrow-Pratt measure of risk aversion, and that the dispersive order preserves this monotonicity for the larger class of increasing utilities. Here, the aging notions ILR (increasing likelihood ratio), IFR (increasing failure rate), IGLR (increasing generalized likelihood ratio), and IGFR (increasing generalized failure rate) are characterized in terms of expected utilities. Based on these observations, we recover the closure properties of ILR, IFR, and DRHR under convolution, and of IGLR and IGFR under product, and investigate the closure properties of the dispersive order, location-independent riskier order, excess wealth order, the total time on test transform order under convolution, and the star order under product. We have some new findings.

Abstract:This paper studies 2 different versions of the general residual lifetime at random times in the context of statistical dependence between the system lifetime and the random time. We prove that the class of residual lifetimes with a semiindependent random age is equivalent to the class of residual lifetimes at independent random times. Additionally, we conduct stochastic comparisons of the 2 versions of the general residual lifetime at random times. Several numerical examples are presented to illustrate the ordering results.

Abstract:We introduce some new generalized stochastic orderings (in the spirit of relative ageing) which compare probability distributions with the exponential distribution. These orderings are useful to understand the phenomenon of positive ageing classes and also helpful to guide the practitioners when there are crossing hazard rates and/or crossing mean residual lives. We study some characterizations of these orderings. Inter-relations among these orderings have also been discussed.

Abstract:This paper considers parallel and series systems with heterogeneous components having dependent exponential lifetimes. The underlying dependence is assumed to be Archimedean and the component lifetimes are supposed to be connected according to an Archimedean copula. Sufficient conditions are found to dominate a parallel system with heterogenous exponential components, with respect to the dispersive order, by another parallel system with homogenous exponential components where the dependence structure between lifetimes of components is the same. We also compare two series systems (and two parallel systems) with general one-parameter dependent components and with respect to the usual stochastic ordering. Examples are given to illustrate the theoretical findings.

We derive the distortion function of coherent system with a redundancy mechanism at component level, and then we present the usual stochastic order and hazard rate order on redundant system lifetimes. The main results not only enrich the framework of research in this line but also supplement some corresponding results in recent references. Several examples are presented to illustrate the results as well.

Abstract:We study the stochastic dynamics of coupled states with transition probabilities depending on local persistence, this is, the time since a state has changed. When the population has a preference to adopt older states the system orders quickly due to the dominance of the old state. When preference for new states prevails, the system can show coexistence of states or synchronized collective behavior resulting in long ordering times. In this case, the magnetization $m(t)$ of the system oscillates around $m(t)=0$. Implications for social systems are discussed.

Abstract:Using intermittent maps with infinite invariant measures, we investigate the universality of time-averaged observables under aging conditions. According to Aaronson-Darling-Kac theorem, in non-aged dynamical systems with infinite invariant measures, the distribution of the normalized time averages of integrable functions converge to the Mittag-Leffler distribution. This well known theorem holds when the start of observations coincides with the start of the dynamical processes. Introducing a concept of the aging limit where the aging time $t_a$ and the total measurement time $t$ goes to infinity while the aging ratio $t_a/t$ is a constant, we obtain a novel distributional limit theorem of time-averaged observables integrable with respect to the infinite invariant density. Applying the theorem to the Lyapunov exponent in intermittent maps, we find that regular motions and a weakly chaotic behavior coexist in the aging limit. This mixed type of dynamics is controlled by the aging ratio and hence is very different from the usual scenario of regular and chaotic motions in Hamiltonian systems. The probability of finding regular motions in non-aged processes is zero, while in the aging regime it is finite and it increases when system ages.

Abstract:A new proportional stochastic order is defined based on the concept of quantile residual life. In addition, a new aging class of life distributions, namely, decreasing proportional failure rate distributions, was defined. Moreover, two other aging classes based on the proposed stochastic ordering are defined and investigated: decreasing proportional α-quantile residual life and its dual increasing proportional α -quantile residual life. The relationship between the proportional failure rate and proportional α -quantile residual life has been discussed. Some well-known and useful models are classified in terms of the proportional α-quantile residual life function. Finally, a new modified Pareto distribution with a decreasing proportional failure rate and an increasing proportional α-quantile residual life function was presented and studied.
