Abstract:Classical gravity coupled to a CFT$_4$ (matter) is considered. The effect of the quantum dynamics of matter on gravity is studied around maximally symmetric spaces (flat, de Sitter and Anti de Sitter). The structure of the graviton propagator is modified and non-trivial poles appear due to matter quantum effects. The position and residues of such poles are mapped as a function of the relevant parameters, the central charge of the CFT$_4$, the two $R^2$ couplings of gravity as well as the curvature of the background space-time. The instabilities induced are determined. Such instabilities can be important in cosmology as they trigger the departure from de Sitter space and in some regions of parameters are more important than the well-known scalar instabilities. It is also determined when the presence of such instabilities is unreliable if the associated scales are larger than the ``species" cutoff of the gravitational theory.

On the non-linear stability of the Cosmological region of the Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime

Abstract:The non-linear stability of the sub-extremal Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime in the stationary region near the conformal boundary is analysed using a technique based on the extended conformal Einstein field equations and a conformal Gaussian gauge. This strategy relies on the observation that the Cosmological stationary region of this exact solution can be covered by a non-intersecting congruence of conformal geodesics. Thus, the future domain of dependence of suitable spacelike hypersurfaces in the Cosmological region of the spacetime can be expressed in terms of a conformal Gaussian gauge. A perturbative argument then allows us to prove existence and stability results close to the conformal boundary and away from the asymptotic points where the Cosmological horizon intersects the conformal boundary. In particular, we show that small enough perturbations of initial data for the sub-extremal Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime give rise to a solution to the Einstein field equations which is regular at the conformal boundary. The analysis in this article can be regarded as a first step towards a stability argument for perturbation data on the Cosmological horizons.

Abstract:Seiberg and Witten have shown that the non-perturbative stability of string physics on conformally compactified spacetimes is related to the behaviour of the areas and volumes of certain branes as the brane is moved towards infinity. If, as is particularly natural in quantum cosmology, the spatial sections of an accelerating cosmological model are flat and compact, then the spacetime is on the brink of disaster: it turns out that the version of inflationary spacetime geometry with toral spatial sections is marginally stable in the Seiberg-Witten sense. The question is whether the system remains stable before and after Inflation, when the spacetime geometry is distorted away from the inflationary form but still has flat spatial sections. We show that it is indeed possible to avoid disaster, but that requiring stability at all times imposes non-trivial conditions on the spacetime geometry of the early Universe in string cosmology. This in turn allows us to suggest a candidate for the structure which, in the earliest Universe, forbids cosmological singularities.

Abstract:We prove the instability of the gravitating regular sphaleron solutions of the $SU(2)$ Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs system with a Higgs doublet, by studying the frequency spectrum of a class of radial perturbations. With the help of a variational principle we show that there exist always unstable modes. Our method has the advantage that no detailed knowledge of the equilibrium solution is required. It does, however, not directly apply to black holes.

Abstract:We study the decay of the false vacuum in the regime where the quantum field theory analysis is not valid, since gravitational effects become important. This happens when the height of the barrier separating the false and the true vacuum is large, and it has implications for the instability of de Sitter, Minkowski and anti-de Sitter vacua. We carry out the calculations for a scalar field with a potential coupled to gravity, and work within the thin-wall approximation, where the bubble wall is thin compared to the size of the bubble. We show that the false de Sitter vacuum is unstable, independently of the height of the potential and the relative depth of the true vacuum compared to the false vacuum. The false Minkowski and anti-de Sitter vacua can be stable despite the existence of a lower energy true vacuum. However, when the relative depth of the true and false vacua exceeds a critical value, which depends on the potential of the false vacuum and the height of the barrier, then the false Minkowski and anti-de Sitter vacua become unstable. We calculate the probability for the decay of the false de Sitter, Minkowski and anti-de Sitter vacua, as a function of the parameters characterizing the field potential.

Abstract:We perform a thorough analysis of de Sitter solutions in O(d,d) invariant cosmologies. Starting with a homogeneous and isotropic framework we examine conditions for the existence of such solutions to the vacuum field equations, nonperturbative in α′ in both the string frame and the Einstein frame. We elucidate the nature of the instability in the string frame vacuum. For the Einstein frame, we demonstrate that the de Sitter solutions cannot be eternal. We then extend our analysis to include Bianchi I universes where the O(d,d) symmetry includes scale factor exchange as well as scale factor duality. Abstract: We prove global stability of the Minkowski spacetime in the wave coordinates system for the massive Einstein-Vlasov system. In particular, compared with previous results by Lindblad-Taylor, in which the Vlasov part is assumed to have compact support assumption, and Fajman-Joudioux-Smulevci, in which the spacetime is assumed to be exact Schwarzschild in the exterior region, we do not impose any compact support condition for the Vlasov part and allow a large class of non-isotropic perturbations for the metric part, which decay at rate $\langle r\rangle^{-1+}$ towards space infinity.

Abstract:We investigate the classical stability of Schwarzschild-AdS black hole in a massive theory of the Einstein-Weyl gravity. It turns out that the linearized Einstein tensor perturbations exhibit unstable modes featuring the Gregory-Laflamme instability of five-dimensional AdS black string, in contrast to the stable Schwarzschild-AdS black hole in the Einstein-Weyl gravity. We confirm that the instability of the black hole in the Einstein-Weyl gravity arises from the massiveness but not a feature of fourth-order derivative theory giving ghost states.

Abstract:The distance conjecture claims that as the modulus traverses along the trans-Planckian geodesic distance, the effective field theory becomes invalid by a descent of a tower of states from UV. Moreover, according to the recent emergence proposal, the kinetic term of the modulus is entirely generated by the wavefunction renormalization in which a tower of states are integrated out. Assuming these two conjectures, we explore the role of a tower of states coupled to the modulus in (in)stability of the de Sitter (dS) vacuum by studying the one-loop effective potential generated by a tower of states. We find that a fermionic tower of states makes the effective potential more or less consistent with the dS swampland conjecture : either the slope or the curvature of the potential is sizeable. In contrast, the effective potential generated by a bosonic tower of states seems to allow the stable dS vacuum. Therefore, in order to argue the instability of the dS vacuum, the additional ingredient like supersymmetry breaking needs to be taken into account.

Abstract:We show that 3-dimensional AdS spacetime can be semiclassically unstable due to strongly interacting quantum field effects. In our previous paper, we have pointed out the possibility of such an instability of AdS 3 by inspecting linear perturbations of the (covering space of) static BTZ black hole with AdS 4 gravity dual in the context of holographic semiclassical problems. In the present paper, we further study this issue from thermodynamic viewpoint by constructing asymptotically AdS 3 semiclassical solutions and computing free energies of the solutions. We find two asymptotically AdS 3 solutions to the semiclassical Einstein equations with non-vanishing source term: the one whose free energy is smaller than that of the BTZ with vanishing source term and the other whose free energy is smaller than that of the global AdS 3 with no horizon (thus manifestly zero-temperature background). The instability found in this paper implies the breakdown of the maximal symmetries of AdS 3 , and its origin is different from the well-known semiclassical linear instability since our holographic semiclassical Einstein equations in 3-dimensions do not involve higher order derivative terms.

Abstract:How the spacetime evolved non-perturbatively in a landscape with multiple anti-de Sitter (AdS) vacua, which is theoretically well-motivated, has always been a matter of concern. As a step towards this issue, we perform (3+1)D numerical relativity simulations for the inhomogeneous universe in an AdS landscape, and find that large inhomogeneity of scalar field can develop into not only sphere-like bubbles, but also novel tube-like structures. It is observed that the bubble or tube wall (across the potential barrier) likely inflates as a quasi-dS space, while the different regions separated by the walls are in different AdS vacua and will collapse towards singularity.

We obtain the ghost-free condition (GFC) based on the transformation from the Jordan frame to the Einstein frame and the classical stability condition (CSC) satisfied $f^{(0)}_{RR}-\phi_0F^{(0)}_{RR}<0$. We present the on-shell and off-shell one-loop effective action and quantum stability condition (QSC) by utilizing the generalized zeta-function. We find that under the fulfillment of GFC, CSC and QSC are inconsistent.

Abstract:This paper proves the stability, with respect to the evolution determined by the vacuum Einstein equations, of the Cartesian product of high-dimensional Minkowski space with a compact, Ricci-flat Riemannian manifold that admits a spin structure and a nonzero parallel spinor. Such a product includes the example of Calabi-Yau and other special holonomy compactifications, which play a central role in supergravity and string theory. The stability proved in this paper provides a counter example to an instability argument by Penrose.

Spectral Stability of Near-Extremal Spacetimes

Abstract:It has been suggested that the spectrum of quasinormal modes of rotating black holes is unstable against additional potential terms in the perturbation equation, as the operator associated with the equation is non-self-adjoint. We point out that a bilinear form has been constructed previously to allow a perturbation analysis of the spectrum, which was applied to study the quasinormal modes of weakly charged Kerr -Newman black holes [Phys. Rev. D 91, 044025 (2015)]. The proposed spectral instability should be restated as instability against potential terms that have an infinitesimal "energy" norm that is specifically defined by the type of inner products introduced by Jaramillo et al. and preserving the physical meaning of energy. We argue that it is necessary to address the stability of all previous mode analysis results to reveal their susceptibility to energetically infinitesimal perturbations. In particular, for near-extremal Kerr spacetime, we show that the spectrum of zero-damping modes, which have slow decay rates, is unstable (with order unity fractional change in decay rates) with fine-tuned modification of the potential. The decay rates are, however, always positive with energetically infinitesimal perturbations. If finite potential modifications are allowed near the black hole, it is possible to find superradiantly unstable modes, i.e., a "black hole bomb" without an explicit outer shell. For the zero-damping modes in near-extremal Reissner-Nordstrom-de Sitter black holes, which are relevant for the breakdown of strong cosmic censorship, we find that the corresponding spectrum is stable under energetically infinitesimal perturbations.
Beam Instability for Wave Dark Matter

Abstract:In the early universe, strong large scale random flows prevail, and when these flows collide it produces sheets and filaments for the conventional particle dark matter model. However, for wave dark matter, the sheets and filaments are parallelly modulated by fine-scale and large-amplitude interference fringes. These long fine fringes tend to be unstable initially and subsequently deform and collapse to form halos of various sizes, perhaps down to proto-globular cluster scales. This work aims to investigate the instability of such fringes. Two colliding streams of quantum waves result in a standing density wave. By contrast, two colliding beams in classical collisionless fluid systems often give rise to beam instability, characterized by unstable oscillations with a complex frequency. Will the quantum standing density wave be subject to a similar instability? In fact, such unstable oscillations have never been observed in conventional quantum mechanical systems. This study discovers that periodic fringes can indeed undergo unstable oscillations or beam instability. The presence of any local density null in the background density that fails the Madelung formulation is shown to be the necessary condition for unstable oscillations. We establish a phase diagram to distinguish between beam instability, Jeans instability, and stable oscillation through theoretical calculations and computer simulations. Roughly speaking, Jeans instability almost always occurs for long-wave density perturbations; beam instability on the other hand always occurs when the density wave is aligned with the beam direction and moreover the period of the density wave is twice the period of background density; lastly, both instabilities diminish for a very low background density. We have engaged in Blocks theorem extensively in the analysis.

Perturbing the perturbed: Stability of quasinormal modes in presence of a positive cosmological constant

Abstract:In this work, we wish to address the question -- whether the quasi-normal modes, the characteristic frequencies associated with perturbed black hole spacetimes, central to the stability of these black holes, are themselves stable. Though the differential operator governing the perturbation of black hole spacetimes is self-adjoint, the boundary conditions are dissipative in nature, so that the spectral theorem becomes inapplicable, and there is no guarantee regarding the stability of the quasi-normal modes. We have provided a general method of transforming to the hyperboloidal coordinate system, for both asymptotically flat and asymptotically de Sitter spacetimes which neatly captures the dissipative boundary conditions, and the differential operator becomes non-self-adjoint. Employing the pseudospectrum analysis and numerically implementing the same through Chebyshev's spectral method, we present how the quasi-normal modes will drift away from their unperturbed values under external perturbation of the scattering potential. Intriguingly, for strong enough perturbation, even the fundamental quasi-normal mode, associated with gravitational perturbations, drifts away from its unperturbed position for asymptotically de Sitter black holes, in stark contrast to the case of asymptotically flat black holes. Besides presenting several other interesting results, specifically for asymptotically de Sitter black holes, we also discuss the implications of the instability of the fundamental quasi-normal mode on the strong cosmic censorship conjecture.

Abstract:In this paper we show the classical global stability of the flat Kaluza-Klein spacetime, which corresponds to Minkowski spacetime in $\m R^{1+4}$ with one direction compactified on a circle. We consider small perturbations which are allowed to vary in all directions including the compact direction. These perturbations lead to the creation of massless modes and Klein-Gordon modes. On the analytic side, this leads to a PDE system coupling wave equations to an infinite sequence of Klein-Gordon equations with different masses. The techniques we use are based purely in physical space using the vectorfield method.
