Abstract:Numerical simulations of a micrometer-sized droplet impinging on a flat, unheated surface were used to investigate spray cooling using the volume of fluid(VOF) model with a static contact angle, experimentally measured dynamic contact angles, and the Kistler model and the Blake model for dynamic contact angles. The simulations with the Blake model agree best with the experimental results. The contact angle calculated from the spreading velocity may not be equal to the apparent contact angle. The droplet is dominated by inertia, viscous and surface tension forces as it impinges on the surface. As the maximum spreading diameter increases, the inertia force plays a dominant role for a longer period, the droplet reaches the maximum spread diameter later and rebound occurs later as We increases. The viscous force has a more important effect on smaller droplets while surface tension plays a more important effect on bigger droplets. The rebound of micrometer-sized droplets is not intense as with millimeter-sized droplets.
