Abstract:Genotypic and environmental variation of heavy metal concentrations in rice grains was investigated using 65 newly-released cultivars grown in five locations of Zhejiang province of China. Significant genotypic difference was found in heavy metal concentrations of rice grains, with 17.3% and 3.7% samples from Wenzhou and Zhuji containing over the maximum permissible concentration (MPC) for Cd, respectively, and 4.2%, 12.1% and 9.3% of samples from Jiaxing, Wenzhou and Zhuji over the MPC for Pb. Meanwhile, some genotypes showed consistently high or low grain Cd, Cr and Pb concentrations in different locations, and Yongyou812, Zheeryou10, and Yongyou812 had the highest Cd, Cr, and Pb concentrations, respectively. In contrast, Xiuyou2178 and Xiushui321 (low Cd), Jiayou08-1 and Zhenuo70 (low Cr), and Zheyou812, Jiaheyou555 and Xieyou702 (low Pb) showed the lowest Cd, Cr, and Pb concentrations, respectively. The relationships of grain heavy metal concentrations and soil factors were evaluated by stepwise multiple linear regression analysis. Significantly positive correlations were observed in rice grain between Cd and Cr, Cu, Ni or Zn, Cr and Fe, Ni or Pb, Cu and Mn, Ni or Zn, Fe and Ni or Zn and Ni and Pb or Zn, respectively. However, Mn and Cd, Cr or Fe showed negative correlation.
