Abstract:Elastic properties and electronic structures of 4d-transition metal mononitrides (ZrN, NbN, MoN, TcN, RuN, RhN, PdN, and AgN) and 5d-transition metal mononitrides (HfN, TaN, WN, ReN, OsN, IrN, PtN, and AuN) with both rocksalt and zinc-blende structures have been investigated by first-principles calculations. Lattice constants, bulk moduli, band structures and cohesive energies are obtained. The trends of lattice constants, cohesive energies and electronic properties as a function of the number of d electrons are revealed. The relationships of cohesive energies as a function of unit-cell volume and the transition pressures of zinc-blende-to-rocksalt phase transformations are also discussed.

Abstract:The quasiparticle band structures of monolayer alpha-ZrNX (X = Cl, Br, I) and beta-ZrNX (X = Cl, Br, I) are researched by using an exact quasiparticle approximation GW theory. Our results show that both monolayer alpha-ZrNX (X = Cl, Br, I) and beta-ZrNX (X = Cl, Br, I) are two-dimensional semiconductors with wide band gaps (larger than 3.5 eV). We have considered the effect of exciton, calculated their optical properties by GW(0)+BSE method, and obtained the accurate dielectric function spectrum. We find that monolayer alpha-ZrNI has excellent light absorption in the ultraviolet region. By studying the exciton binding energy of monolayer a-ZrNX (X = Cl, Br, I), it is found that monolayer alpha-ZrNCl and alpha-ZrNBr have relatively large exciton binding energies (0.74 eV, 0.67 eV). The relationship between the band gaps and the exciton binding energies in two-dimensional semiconductors has also been discussed. Our present work gives more accurate information on the energy band structures and optical properties of monolayer ZrNX (X = Cl, Br, I), which is of guiding significance for the future investigation on monolayer ZrNX (X = Cl, Br, I). And the investigation of the exciton binding energy has a reference value for the study of the exciton effect in two-dimensional semiconductors.

Abstract:The elastic and thermodynamic properties of the anti-perovskite superconductor ZnCNi3 and CdCNi3 are investigated by first-principles calculations. With the local density approximation as well as the generalized gradient approximation for exchange and correlation, the ground state properties and equation of state are obtained, which agree well with other theoretical calculations and experiments. Furthermore, by the elastic stability criteria, we predict that ZnCNi3 and CdCNi3 are not stable above 98.1 GPa and 196.5 GPa, respectively. The dependences of the heat capacity, thermal expansion coefficient, the Gruneisen parameter and bulk modulus (B-T and B-S) on pressure and temperature for ZnCNi3 and CdCNi3 are also obtained successfully.

Abstract:The crystal structures, stability, electronic and elastic properties of 4d and 5d transition metal monoborides have been studied by first principles calculations. It is found that NaCl-type ZrB, NbB, MoB, HfB, TaB and WB, WC-type TcB, RuB, ReB, OsB and IrB, and anti-NiAs-type RhB and PdB are thermodynamically stable at zero pressure. They all are metallic. The Vickers hardnesses of these monoborides are relatively low as compared with monocarbides and mononitrides. It is clarified that the presence of B-vacancies is the origin for the difference of lattice parameters between theoretical and experimental results for WC-type IrB and anti-NiAs-type PtB while IrB and PtB with stoichiometry from calculations are revealed to be mechanically unstable and dynamically unstable, respectively. Abstract:The structural, elastic, thermodynamic and electronic properties of the Ti15-xMoxSn compounds were systematically investigated by means of first-principles calculations based on the density functional theory (DFT). The calculated results demonstrate the Ti15-xMoxSn compounds still remain the stable beta phase structure. The calculation of cohesive energy shows that the structural stability of the Ti15-xMoxSn compounds increases apparently with the increase of Mo content. According to Hooke's law, the single crystal elastic constants were obtained and show that all the calculated compounds keep mechanical stability. Then the bulk modulus B, shear modulus G, Young's modulus E and Poisson's ratio nu of poly-crystalline aggregates were calculated at zero pressure. The calculated results show that among these Ti15-xMoxSn compounds, Ti4Mo11Sn exhibits the largest stiffness while Ti12Mo3Sn shows the greatest ductility. The compounds Ti12Mo3Sn and Ti11Mo4Sn with the two lowest elastic Young's modulus of 61.01 GPa and 65.59 GPa are expected to be promising metallic biomaterials for implant applications. Abstract:First-principles calculations were performed to study the structural, elastic, electronic properties and Debye temperature of D0(22)-Ni3V under pressure. The obtained structural parameters are in accord with previous data. The calculated elastic constants manifest that Ni3V binary compound is mechanically stable. Using the Voigt-Reuss-Hill method, elastic properties such as bulk modulus B, shear modulus G, Young's modulus E and Poisson's ratio y are calculated. And results indicate that pressure can improve the hardness of Ni3V compound. Moreover, the density of states as a function of pressure is analyzed, and Population analysis explain the improvement of hardness by pressure from the view of chemical bonds. The Debye temperature Theta(D) calculated from elastic constants goes up with the increasing pressure. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Elastic and electronic properties of low compressible 4d transition metal diborides: First principles calculations

Abstract:First principles calculations are used to investigate the structural, elastic, and electronic properties of 4d transition metal diborides MB2 (M=Zr, Nb, Mo, Tc, Ru, Rh). It is found that both TcB2 and MoB2 are ultrahard materials. Among 4d transition metal diborides, hexagonal ReB2-type TcB2 has the highest C33 value of 947 GPa, which indicates the high incompressibility along the c axis. The hexagonal ReB2-type and orthorhombic RuB2-type structures are the ground-state phase for TcB2 and MoB2, respectively. Both the highly directional covalency and the zigzag topology of interconnected bonds are the origin of the lower compressibility.
Stoichiometric Delta-Nbn: The Most Incompressible Cubic Transition Metal Mononitride

Abstract:We report the high-pressure synthesis and elastic properties of stoichiometric cubic delta-NbN investigated by a combination of experiments and first principles calculations. Using the high pressure solid-state ion-exchange reaction route, we have successfully synthesized polycrystalline delta-NbN at 5.5 GPa and 1673 K. The refined lattice parameter of as-synthesized sample is 4.3960(6) angstrom, corresponding to the stoichiometric niobium nitride. The determined bulk modulus of delta-NbN is B-0 = 319(2) GPa with B-0' = 4.4(2), which is one of the most incompressible cubic transition metal mononitrides. Theoretical calculations of the elastic constants, bulk modulus, shear modulus, Young's modulus, and Poisson's ratio agree well with experimental and previous theoretical results. The calculated minimum shear strength of delta-NbN is 23.4 GPa for the (111) [(1) over bar(1) over bar2] slip system, comparable to those of ZrN and HfN. In addition, a finite density of states at the Fermi level was revealed for delta-NbN, hence exhibiting metallic behavior.

Abstract:The elastic, electronic, thermodynamic and optical properties of the zinc-blende structure aluminum nitride (AlN) under high pressure have been investigated using first-principles calculations. The dependencies of the elastic constants, the bulk modulus, the shear modulus and energy gaps on the applied pressure are presented, and the results are in good agreement with comparable experimental and theoretical values. Also, the energy band structure and density of states under high pressure have been analysed. Furthermore, the optical constants, including the dielectric function, optical reflectivity, refractive index and electron energy loss, are discussed for radiation up to 50 eV.

Abstract:The 4d-transition-metals carbides (ZrC, NbC) and nitrides (ZrN, NbN) in the rocksalt structure, as well as their ternary alloys, have been recently studied by means of a first-principles full potential linearized augmented plane waves method within the local density approximation. These materials are important because of their interesting mechanical and physical properties, which make them suitable for many technological applications. Here, by using a simple theoretical model, we estimate the bulk moduli of their ternary alloys Zr$_x$Nb$_{1-x}$C and Zr$_x$Nb$_{1-x}$N in terms of the bulk moduli of the end members alone. The results are comparable to those deduced from the first-principles calculations.

Elastic properties of Janus transition metal dichalcogenide nanotubes from first principles

Abstract:We calculate the elastic properties of Janus transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) nanotubes using first principles Kohn-Sham density functional theory (DFT). Specifically, we perform electronic structure simulations that exploit the cyclic and helical symmetry in the system to compute the Young's moduli, Poisson's ratios, and torsional moduli for twenty-seven select armchair and zigzag Janus TMD nanotubes at their equilibrium diameters. We find the following trend in the moduli values: MSSe > MSTe > MSeTe, while their anisotropy with respect to armchair and zigzag configurations has the following ordering: MSTe > MSeTe > MSSe. This anisotropy and its ordering between the different groups is confirmed by computing the shear modulus from the torsional modulus using an isotropic elastic continuum model, and comparing it against the value predicted from the isotropic relation featuring the Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio. We also develop a model for the Young's and torsional moduli of Janus TMD nanotubes based on linear regression.

Abstract:International Journal of Modern Physics B, Ahead of Print. In this paper, using density functional theory (DFT), we present a systematic computational investigation on ZrCl4 in respect of electronic, structural, optical, mechanical properties, which is of great interest in semiconductor physics. Our results show that the metal tetrachloride is a mechanically stable semiconductor with a wide indirect bandgap of [math][math]eV ([math][math]eV). ZrCl4 could behave as a brittle material and could be covalent. According to our optical data, a reflectivity of 27.6% could suggest a good material absorption characteristic on the studied material, with a high absorption coefficient of up to [math][math]cm[math]. On the partial density of states plot, the hybridization of electron orbitals between Cl 3p5 states in the valence band and transition Zr 4d2 states in the conduction band is also observed. Our findings advance the fundamental understanding of ZrCl4 material and provide important insights in electronic/optoelectronic applications.

Two-Dimensional Honeycomb Monolayer of Nitrogen Group Elements and the Related Nano-Structure: A First-Principle Study

Abstract:Because of its novel physical properties, two-dimensional materials have attracted great attention. From first-principle calculations and vibration frequenceis analysis, we predict a new family of two-dimensional materials based on the idea of octet stability: honeycomb lattices of pnictogens (N, P, As, Sb, Bi). The buckled structures of materials come from the sp3 hybridization. These materials have indirect band gap ranging from 0.43eV to 3.7eV. From the analysis of projected density of states, we argue that the s and p orbitals together are sufficient to describe the electronic structure under tight-binding model, and the tight-binding parameters are obtained by fitting the band structures to first-principle results. Surprisingly large on-site spin-orbit coupling is found for all the pnictogen lattices except nitrogen. Investigation on the electronic structures of both zigzag and armchair nanoribbons reveals the possible existence of spin-polarized ferromagnetic edge states in some cases, which are rare in one-dimensional systems. These edge states and magnetism may exist under the condition of high vaccum and low temperature. This new family of materials would have promising applications in electronics, optics, sensors, and solar cells.

Abstract:Janus materials possess extraordinary physical, chemical, and mechanical properties caused by symmetry breaking. Here, the mechanic properties, electronic structure, magnetic properties, and optical properties of Janus Cr2TeX (X= P, As, Sb) monolayers are systematically investigated by the density functional theory. Janus Cr2TeP, Cr2TeAs, and Cr2TeSb are intrinsic ferromagnetic (FM) half-metals with wide band gaps between spindown channel and half-metallic gaps. The Curie temperature (T-c) of these monolayers are about 583, 608, and 597 K, respectively by Monte Carlo simulations based on the Heisenberg model. Additionally, it has been found that Cr2TeX (X= P, As, Sb) monolayers still exhibit FM half-metallic properties under biaxial strain ranging from -6% to 6%. At last, the Cr2TeP monolayer has a higher absorption coefficient than the Cr2TeAs and Cr2TeSb monolayers in the visible region. The results predict that Janus Cr2TeX (X= P, As, Sb) monolayers with novel properties have good potential for applications in future nanodevices.

Abstract:Among transition metal nitrides, tungsten nitrides possess unique and/or superior chemical, mechanical, and thermal properties. Preparation of these nitrides, however, is challenging because the incorporation of nitrogen into tungsten lattice is thermodynamically unfavorable at atmospheric pressure. To date, most materials in the W-N system are in the form of thin films produced by nonequilibrium processes and are often poorly crystallized, which severely limits their use in diverse technological applications. Here we report synthesis of tungsten nitrides through new approaches involving solid-state ion exchange and nitrogen degassing under pressure. We unveil a number of novel nitrides including hexagonal and rhombohedral W2N3. The final products are phase-pure and well-crystallized in bulk forms. For hexagonal W2N3, hexagonal WN, and cubic W3N4, they exhibit elastic properties rivaling or even exceeding cubic-BN. All four nitrides are prepared at a moderate pressure of 5 GPa, the lowest among high-pressure synthesis of transition metal nitrides, making it practically feasible for massive and industrial-scale production.
First-principles Study of Structural, Vibrational, and Electronic Properties of Trigonally Bonded II-IV-N2

Abstract:With the first-principles calculations, we probe into the structural, vibrational, and electronic properties of trigonally bonded planar II-IV-N-2 (II = Zn, Cd; IV = Si, Ge, Sn), in contrast to their well-known tetrahedrally bonded counterparts. A detailed analysis is presented for the deformed honeycomb-like structures of planar II-IV-N-2 in light of atomic radius and electronegativity of different group-II and group-IV elements. Cohesive energy and phonon property are calculated to investigate the stability of monolayer II-IV-N-2. Among the six monolayer II-IV-N-2 studied, five of them are dynamically stable except for monolayer CdSnN2 which has imaginary phonon frequencies. The band curvatures of trigonally bonded II-IV-N-2 reveal distinct difference comparing to their tetrahedrally bonded counterparts and show connections to atomic transmutation and structural distortions. The different variation trends of band gap from tetrahedrally bonded structure to trigonally bonded structure are explored through density of states analysis. The highest valence band energies of monolayer ZnGeN2 and ZnSnN2 at F and X point are very close, resulting in a quasi-direct band gap. Tuning of band gap characteristics by uniaxial strain is investigated for these ternary nitrides and it is shown that a slightly change less than 0.1% on lattice constant b can induce indirect-to-direct band gap transition for monolayer ZnSnN2.
The geometry, electronic and magnetic properties of ZrnNi (n = 2-14) clusters: A first-principles jointed particle-swarm-optimization investigation

Abstract:Zirconium-nickel binary alloys and metal glass have superior performance like ultrahigh fracture strength, good toughness. In this paper, the structures of small-sized ZrnNi (n = 2-14) clusters have been searched using the particle swarm algorithm in combination with density-functional theory (DFT). The geometrical configuration tends to form a three-dimensional structure as the number of atoms in the cluster increases. By calculating the average binding energy per atom, second-order difference of energy, and dissociation energy of ZrnNi (n = 2-14) clusters, it is demonstrated that ZrnNi (n = 7, 12) clusters are more stable than their neighbors, and can be used as a candidate structure for magic number clusters. The electron localization function (ELF) calculations reveal those metallic bonds of Zr-Ni and Zr-Zr atoms. The Adaptive natural density partitioning results show that there are 20 three-center and 7 seven-center two-electron orbitals which make the quenching of magnetic moments of Zr12Ni atoms.

Abstract:The newly synthesized BeN4 monolayer has introduced a novel group of 2D materials called nitrogen-rich 2D materials. In the present study, the anisotropic mechanical and thermal properties of three members of this group, BeN4, MgN4, and PtN4, are investigated. To this end, a machine learning-based interatomic potential (MLIP) is developed on the basis of the moment tensor potential (MTP) method and utilized in classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. Mechanical properties are calculated by extracting the stress-strain curve and thermal properties by non-equilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) method. Acquired results show the anisotropic elastic modulus and lattice thermal conductivity of these materials. Generally, elastic modulus and thermal conductivity in the armchair direction are higher than in the zigzag direction. Also, the elastic anisotropy is almost constant at every temperature for BeN4 and MgN4, while for PtN4, this parameter is decreased by increasing the temperature. The findings of this research are not only evidence of the application of machine learning in MD simulations, but also provide information on the basic anisotropic mechanical and thermal properties of these newly discovered 2D nanomaterials.

Strain Effect on the Structural and Electronic Properties of a Monolayer C 4 N 4

Abstract:The first-principles calculations have been performed to examine structural, mechanical, and electronic properties at large stain for a monolayer C 4 N 4 , which was predicted as an anchoring promising material to attenuate shuttle effect in Li–S batteries stemming from its large absorption energy and low diffusion energy barrier. Our results show that the ideal strengths for C 4 N 4 under tensile and pure shear deformation conditions reach 13.9 and 12.5 GPa at strain of 0.07 and 0.28, respectively. The folded five-membered rings and diverse bonding modes between carbon and nitrogen atoms enhances the ability to resist plastic deformation of C 4 N 4 . The orderly bond-rearranging behaviors under the weak tensile loading path along the [100] direction cause the impressive semiconductor-metal and inverse semiconductor-metal transition. The present results enrich the knowledge of the structure and electronic properties of C 4 N 4 under deformations and shed light on exploring other two-dimensional materials under diverse loading conditions.
