Abstract:The effect of physical structure for the SO2 removal performance was studied with some commercial activated carbons(ACs).The carbons, which were investigated by proximate analysis, nitrogen physisorption, scanning electron microscope(SEM) and SO2 removal test, exhibited different textural properties and SO2 adsorption capacities. From the isotherms of N2 and SEM microphotographs,it is concluded that the pore structure is dominated by micropore, while the addition of coconut-shell is helpful to the formation of mesopore. The micropore and mesopore consist of the well-developed pore structure, determining the specific surface area and pore volume. The well-developed texture has a positive effect on SO2 adsorption capacity of AC,especially on the large specific surface area. However, the pore structure has a negative effect on the mechanical strength of the samples due to the fragile carbon skeleton. Moreover, the special surface morphology(laminated structure) was observed on the carbon prepared with coconut-shell,which resulted in the notable drop of strength.
