Abstract:Activated carbon,graphite,carbon nanofibers(CNF) and CNF supported phosphoric oxides were tested as the catalysts for oxidative dehydrogenation of propane(ODP).The catalysts were characterized by SEM,HRTEM, XRD,BET and TG.Carbon materials have high catalytic activity and selectivity to propene for ODP.Compared with activated carbon and graphite,CNF is a promising catalyst for ODP due to its structure peculiarities.The gasifying temperature of CNF increases by supported phosphoric oxides on CNF.A highly selective catalyst for ODP is obtained by oxidizing CNF in concentrated HNO_3 and using(NH_4)_2HPO_4 as precursor for phosphoric oxides.At 500℃,a 39.63% selective to propene is achieved at a 42.07% propane conversion.

Abstract:Oxidative dehydrogenation of propane (ODP) is an intriguingly alternative approach for presently industrial propene manufacture. However, the high temperature ( > 500 degrees C) would aggravate the deep oxidation of propene and catalyst deactivation. Co3O4 catalyst prepared by using ZIF-8 support possesses tunable morphology, crystallite size and surface area, affording low-temperature (175 degrees C) propane conversion catalyst. Loose flake-like morphology with the smaller crystallite sizes and the larger surface area could significantly lower reaction temperature. At given propene yield, more propane conversion (21.1%) indicated that propene combustion occurred, and lower reaction temperatures contribute to boosting propene yield. The higher catalytic activity could be ascribed to easier reducibility of Co3+, the higher concentration of surface Co3+ and more surface content of lattice Co-O bond. Moreover, the Co3O4-500 catalyst displays excellent thermostability after a 20 h time on stream at 250 degrees C.
Synthesis of Ordered Mesoporous Molecular Sieve-Supported Cobalt Catalyst via Organometallic Complexation for Propane Non-Oxidative Dehydrogenation

Abstract:Co-based catalysts have shown great promise for propane dehydrogenation (PDH) reactions due to their merits of environmental friendliness and low cost. In this study, ordered mesoporous molecular sieve-supported CoOx species (CoOx/Al-SBA-15 catalyst) were prepared by one-step organometallic complexation. The catalysts show worm-like morphology with regular straight-through mesoporous pores and high external specific surface area. These typical features can substantially enhance the dispersion of CoOx species and mass transfer of reactants and products. Compared with the conventional impregnation method, the 10CSOC (10 wt.% Co/Al-SBA-15 prepared by the organometallic complexation method) sample presents a smaller CoOx size and higher Co2+/Co3+ ratio. When applied to PDH reaction, the 10CSOC delivers higher propane conversion and propylene selectivity. Under the optimal conditions (625 °C and 4500 h-1), 10CSOC achieves high propane conversion (43%) and propylene selectivity (83%). This is attributed to the smaller and better dispersion of CoOx nanoparticles, more suitable acid properties, and higher content of Co2+ species. This work paves the way for the rational design of high-performance catalysts for industrially important reactions.
Oxidative Dehydrogenation of Propane over Ni-Mo-Mg-O Catalysts

Abstract:In this work, a series of Ni-Mo-Mg-O catalysts with mesoporous structure prepared by sol-gel method were investigated for the oxidative dehydrogenation of propane (ODHP). The techniques of temperature-programmed reduction with H2 (H2-TPR), N2 adsorption-desorption, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) were employed for catalyst characterization. It is found that the activity of the catalysts for ODHP increases first and then decreases with the increase of Mo content. The catalyst with a Mo/Ni atomic ratio of 1/1 exhibits the best catalytic activity, which gives the propene selectivity of 81.4% at a propane conversion of 11.3% under 600°C and maintains the good catalytic performance for 22 h on stream. This is related not only to its high reducibility and dispersion as revealed by TPR and XRD, but also to the formation of more selective oxygen species on the MoOx-NiO interface as identified by XPS.

Abstract:The greenhouse gas CO2 is a promising soft oxidant for the oxidative dehydrogenation of light alkanes. However, the occurrence of side reactions including cracking, hydrogenolysis, and reforming results in lower olefin yields compared with direct dehydrogenation. We report that Pt-M (M = Sn/In/Zn) bimetallic catalysts on non-redox-active silica support can break the equilibrium limit of direct propane dehydrogenation using CO2 as a co-reactant to consume the hydrogen formed in propane dehydrogenation. Unlike the commonly postulated direct CO2-assisted dehydrogenation mechanism, we confirm that CO2-oxidative dehydrogenation of propane (ODHP) proceeds in two tandem steps on these bimetallic catalysts, i.e., propane dehydrogenation and reverse water-gas shift, with the latter being the rate-determining step. In situ X-ray absorption studies and density functional theory calculations suggest that the PtmMn-MOx (e.g., Pt3Sn-SnOx) interfaces are likely active sites.

Abstract:Nanostructured cobalt molybdate catalysts supported on mesoporous silica SBA-15 with different loadings were prepared by citric acid coordination-impregnation method and characterized by XRD, TEM, and BET techniques. The characterization results showed that high loading of well-dispersed crystalline CoMoO4 may be achieved using citric acid coordination-impregnation method and the mesoporous structure of the support remained intact. The catalytic activity of these catalysts in the oxidative dehydrogenation of propane was investigated. The catalysts of nanostructured cobalt molybdate supported on mesoporous silica SBA-15 showed better catalytic performance than the corresponding bulk composite oxide and nanostructured CoMoO4 supported on SBA-15 with loading of 13% (mass fraction, w) displayed propene yield of 16.8% at 823 K.

Abstract:Oxidative dehydrogenation of propane with carbon dioxide (CO 2 -ODP) characterizes the tandem dehydrogenation of propane to propylene with the reduction of the greenhouse gas of CO 2 to valuable CO. However, the existing catalyst is limited due to the poor activity and stability, which hinders its industrialization. Herein, we design the finned Zn-MFI zeolite encapsulated noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) as bifunctional catalysts () for CO 2 -ODP. Characterization results reveal that the Zn 2+ species are coordinated with the MFI zeolite matrix as isolated cations and the NPs of Pt, Rh, or RhPt are highly dispersed in the zeolite crystals. The isolated Zn 2+ cations are very effective for activating the propane and the small NPs are favorable for activating the CO 2 , which synergistically promote the selective transformation of propane and CO 2 to propylene and CO. As a result, the optimal 0.25%Rh0.50% catalyst shows the best propylene yield, satisfactory CO 2 conversion, and long-term stability. Moreover, considering the tunable synergetic effects between the isolated cations and NPs, the developed approach offers a general guideline to design more efficient CO 2 -ODP catalysts, which is validated by the improved performance of the bifunctional catalysts via simply substituting Sn 4+ cations for Zn 2+ cations in the MFI zeolite matrix.

Abstract:Carbon nanofibers (CNF) and CNF-supported phosphoric oxides were tested as the catalysts for oxidative dehydrogenation of propane (ODP). The catalysts were characterized by SEM, TEM, X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2 adsorption and temperature-programmed surface reaction (TPSR). CNF itself is an effective catalyst for ODP, but the high propene yield can only be achieved at high reaction temperature, which would cause CNF gasification. CNF-supported phosphoric oxides can operate at 500°C without gasification and a 39.63% propene selectivity could be reached at a 42.07% propane conversion. Carbonyl-like groups on the CNF surface could be the active sites for ODP.

Abstract:Propane dehydrogenation (PDH) presents a promising alternative to naphtha steam cracking processes for propene production. However, the current commercial catalysts are plagued by the toxicity of Cr (VI) and the exorbitant cost of Pt. We have developed an efficient, eco-friendly, and cost-effective catalyst (CoO x @MFI) in which reduction-resistant CoO x clusters are embedded in situ into the zeolite framework. This catalyst exhibits good catalytic performances (59.0% propane conversion and 93.0% propene selectivity) in PDH reactions, surpassing most Co-based catalysts and competing with Pt-based ones. Crucially, both in situ spectroscopy and theoretical calculations demonstrate that the MFI zeolite-stabilized Co–O moieties are highly favorable for C–H bond activation via an O atom as a Lewis base, which can attach to an H atom and generate [CoOH]+ intermediate with remarkable efficiency.

Abstract:The dehydrogenation of propane over In2O3–MOx (M: Al, Zn, Zr, Ti, Fe, Mg, Si, and Ce) mixed metal oxide catalysts, which were prepared by a coprecipitation or sol–gel method, in the presence of CO2 was investigated. High activity and stability were achieved on the In2O3–Al2O3 catalyst with a 20mol% indium content, giving a propylene yield of 27% without any observable trend of deactivation in 24h.

Abstract:We develop a host guest strategy to construct cobalt-doped MnO2 nanofibers with dual reactive sites, which exhibit high activity for propane deep oxidation. After the incorporation of cobalt (the actual molar ratio of Co/Mn up to 0.15), no distinct changes of crystal structure and morphology of MnO2 nanofibers were observed, as evidenced by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The optimized MnCo0.2 nanofibers possessed the advantages of Mn and Co and exhibited the propane conversion of 50% (T-50) and 90% (T-90) at 205 and 223 degrees C, respectively. The Co-related species is more responsible for reducing the light-off temperature (T-50), whereas the Mn-related species helps more to decrease complete oxidation temperature (T-90). Furthermore, the in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy results revealed the roles of Co-related species and Mn-related species during propane adsorption and oxidation. The finding demonstrates the win-win effect of two active oxides and provides a solution for developing highly efficient propane oxidation catalysts.
Inverse Coprecipitation Directed Porous Core–Shell Mn–Co–O Catalyst for Efficient Low Temperature Propane Oxidation

Abstract:Mn–Co–O catalysts with different Mn/Co molar ratios were synthesized by means of a facile inverse coprecipitation strategy and applied for the oxidation of propane (C3H8). The XRD pattern of Co2Mn1Oδ (molar ratio of Mn:Co = 1:2) indicates a Co3O4 phase, and most Mn incorporates into Co3O4 lattice to form a solid solution. Minor distributed Mn species occur structure reforming, totally converting to a stable Co–Mn solid solution during oxidation process. Meanwhile, Co2Mn1Oδ features a porous core–shell morphology, the core and shell of which are made up of Co–Mn solid solution, giving rise to a high surface area. The optimized synergistic effect of manganese and cobalt improves low temperature reducibility and produces rich surface active Co3+ species and surface-absorbed oxygen over Co2Mn1Oδ. As a result, it exhibits a prominent excellent catalytic activity, and delivers good thermal stability in the presence of 5 vol % H2O and 5 vol % CO2. In situ DRIFTs analysis displays the reaction path of C3H8 over Co2Mn1Oδ, where dominate intermediate species formate are easily decomposed into CO2. The synthesized porous core–shell Mn–Co–O can be a promising candidate replacing non-noble catalysts toward C3H8 oxidation at low temperature.

Abstract:Compared to the currently widely used propane dehydrogenation process for propylene production, propane oxidative dehydrogenation (ODHP) offers the advantage of no thermodynamic limitations and lower energy consumption. However, a major challenge in ODHP is the occurrence of undesired over-oxidation reactions of propylene, which reduce selectivity and hinder industrialization. MOFs possess a large number of metal sites that can serve as catalytic centers, which facilitates the easier access of reactants to the catalytic centers for reaction. Additionally, their flexible framework structure allows for easier adjustment of their pores compared to metal oxides and molecular sieves, which is advantageous for the diffusion of products within the framework. This property reduces the likelihood of prolonged contact between the generated propylene and the catalytic centers, thus minimizing the possibility of over-oxidation. The research on MOF catalyzed oxidative dehydrogenation of propane (ODHP) mainly focuses on the catalytic properties of MOFs with cobalt oxygen sites and boron oxygen sites. The advantages of cobalt oxygen site MOFs include significantly reduced energy consumption, enabling catalytic reactions at temperatures of 230 °C and below, while boron oxygen site MOFs exhibit high conversion rates and selectivity, albeit requiring higher temperatures. The explicit structure of MOFs facilitates the mechanistic study of these sites, enabling further optimization of catalysts. This paper provides an overview of the recent progress in utilizing MOFs as catalysts for ODHP and explores how they promote progress in ODHP catalysis. Finally, the challenges and future prospects of MOFs in the field of ODHP reactions are discussed.
Dry Citrate-Precursor Synthesized Nanocrystalline Cobalt Oxide As Highly Active Catalyst for Total Oxidation of Propane

Abstract:A set of nanocrystalline cobalt oxide (Co3O4)-based catalysts have been prepared by means of an innovative soft reactive grinding (SRG) procedure. The catalysts exhibited excellent activities and high stabilities for propane catalytic combustion. Complete conversion has been achieved at reaction temperatures as low as 240 degrees C. Comparing with the highly active Co3O4 catalysts in the current literature, the catalysts in this work show exceptionally high specific rate for propane total oxidation (ca. 91.3 mmolc(3) m(-2) h(-1) at 200 degrees C). A correlation between the O-2-TPD results and the activity for Co3O4 reveals that a high concentration of superficial electrophilic oxygen (O-) species is important for achieving a high activity. The prominent lattice distortion induced by prolonged citrate-precursor grinding is suggested to play a key role in creating and maintaining a high density of surface defects, which leads to highly activity and stability of the cobalt spinel catalyst. Abstract:CO2-assisted oxidative dehydrogenation (CO2-ODH) of ethane provides an opportunity to diminish atmospheric CO2 level and effectively utilize shale gas to produce ethylene. However, the stability under high temperature of existing catalysts is limited. In this study, the catalyst of CoWO4 supported Pt metal with different contents were prepared and examined in CO2-ODH of ethane, which exhibited excellent stability during continuous operation. From various characterizations such as XRD, SEM, HRTEM, XPS, in situ DRIFTS, TG-DTA and Raman, it was found that the introduction of CO2 played a key role on inhibiting the complete reduction of Co species, as well as inhibiting the migration of Pt species and coke deposition, which was ascribed to that the introduced CO2 combined with reductive H atoms and thus formic acid intermediate formed then effectively avoided over-reduction of metal species. While in the ethane dehydrogenation (EDH) reaction without CO2 cofed, the Pt species undergowent sintering, the Co species undergowent complete reduction into metallic ones, moreover, a large amount of coke deposited on the metal particles and the support was observed. The current work sheds lights on the design of innovative and stable catalysts for light alkanes oxidative dehydrogenations.

Abstract:A series of Cr2O3-ZrO2 mixed oxides were prepared by a hydrothermal method and studied in relation to their performance in the dehydrogenation of propane to propylene with CO2. The material prepared from a hydrothermal treatment at 180 °C gives an initial propane conversion of 53.3%, which is 1.6 times that of the conventional Cr2O3-ZrO2. The enhanced activity of the hydrothermally prepared materials is attributed to a higher concentration of Cr6 + species. CO2 can alleviate the catalyst deactivation significantly. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Dehydrogenation of propane to propene is one of the important reactions for the production of higher-value chemical intermediates. In the commercial processes, platinum- or chromium oxide-based catalysts have been used for catalytic propane dehydrogenation. Herein, we first report that bulk tungsten oxide can serve as the catalyst for propane dehydrogenation. Tungsten oxide is activated by hydrogen pretreatment and/or co-feeding of hydrogen. Its catalytic activity strongly depends on hydrogen pretreatment time and partial pressure of hydrogen in the feed gas. The activation of tungsten oxide by hydrogen is attributed to reduction of the metal oxide and presence of multivalent oxidation states. Comparison of the catalytic performance of partially reduced WO3−x to other highly active metal oxides shows that WO3−x exhibits superior catalytic activity and selectivity than Cr2O3 and Ga2O3. The findings of this work provide the possibility for activation of metal oxides for catalytic reactions and the opportunity for the development of new type of catalytic systems utilizing partially reduced metal oxides.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:Abstract Propane dehydrogenation (PDH) is an industrial technology for direct propylene production which has received extensive attention in recent years. Nevertheless, existing non-oxidative dehydrogenation technologies still suffer from the thermodynamic equilibrium limitations and severe coking. Here, we develop the intensified propane dehydrogenation to propylene by the chemical looping engineering on nanoscale core-shell redox catalysts. The core-shell redox catalyst combines dehydrogenation catalyst and solid oxygen carrier at one particle, preferably compose of two to three atomic layer-type vanadia coating ceria nanodomains. The highest 93.5% propylene selectivity is obtained, sustaining 43.6% propylene yield under 300 long-term dehydrogenation-oxidation cycles, which outperforms an analog of industrially relevant K-CrO x /Al 2 O 3 catalysts and exhibits 45% energy savings in the scale-up of chemical looping scheme. Combining in situ spectroscopies, kinetics, and theoretical calculation, an intrinsically dynamic lattice oxygen “donator-acceptor” process is proposed that O 2- generated from the ceria oxygen carrier is boosted to diffuse and transfer to vanadia dehydrogenation sites via a concerted hopping pathway at the interface, stabilizing surface vanadia with moderate oxygen coverage at pseudo steady state for selective dehydrogenation without significant overoxidation or cracking.

In situ encapsulated subnanometric CoO clusters within silicalite‐1 zeolite for efficient propane dehydrogenation

Abstract:Cobalt-based catalysts are promising alternatives to replace Pt- and Cr-based catalysts for propane dehydrogenation (PDH). However, the sintering and reduction of unstable Co sites cause fast deactivation. Herein, the ultrasmall cobalt oxide clusters encapsulated within silicalite-1 zeolites (CoO@S-1) has been obtained via a ligand assistance in-situ crystallization method. This CoO@S-1 catalyst exhibits an attractive propylene formation rate of 13.66 mmolC3H6·gcat-1·h-1 with selectivity of >92%, and is durable during 120-hour PDH reaction with five successive regeneration cycles. The high PDH activity of CoO@S-1 is assigned to the encapsulated CoO clusters are favorable for propane adsorption and can better stabilize the detached H* species from propane, leading to the lower dehydrogenation barriers than framework Co2+ cations and Co3O4 nanoparticles. Additionally, the π binding propylene on CoO clusters can prevent the over-dehydrogenation reaction compared with the di-σ binding propylene on metallic Co, leading to the superior propylene selectivity and catalytic stability.
