Abstract:In the present paper, a novel stochastic food chain chemostat model with Monod-Haldane functional response is proposed and studied, incorporating the mean-reversion Ornstein–Uhlenbeck process to simulate stochastic perturbation on the growth of microorganisms by environmental fluctuations. Firstly, the existence and uniqueness of the global positive solution are proved, and the stochastic boundedness of the solution is obtained. Secondly, the conditions for controlling exponential extinction and persistence in the mean of microorganisms are delved. Finally, a large number of representative numerical examples are provided to validate the theoretical results. The results show that the stochastic noise measured by the regression speed and the fluctuation intensity has significant effects on the dynamics of the model.

Abstract:To make the theoretical analysis of the microbial continuous culture more close to the experimental results, a ratio-dependent chemostat model with variable yield is formulated. The model develops the classical Monod model and assumes that the yield is a linear function of the nutrient concentration and the microbial growth rate is a ratio-dependent type function. Qualitative analysis is implemented on this model. It is shown that the system is permanent if and only if it has a positive equilibrium. The sufficient conditions of existence of limit cycles and globally asymptotic stability of the positive equilibrium for the model are given.

Abstract:In this paper,we discuss a predator-prey model with two different delays in the chemostat.The consumption terms take the Monod type response functions.By analyzing the characteristic equations of delay differential equations,we obtain the sufficient conditions of stability of boundary equilibria.About the effect of delay on stability of the positive equilibrium,using stability switch theory and bifurcation theory,we give the sufficient conditions of appearance of stability switches and Hopf bifurcations in the delay equations as a result of changing the delay.Finally,numerical simulations are carried out to illustrate the theoretical results.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a stochastic delayed two-species competition chemostat model with the Monod growth response function. First, we verify that there is a unique global positive solution for any given initial conditions for this stochastic delayed system. Second, we give the dynamical behavior of the solution of stochastic delay system around the washout equilibrium of deterministic system; moreover, we discuss the competition exclusion and coexistence of microorganisms x_1 and x_2 . Finally, computer simulations are carried out to illustrate the obtained results; in addition, results show that time delay has critical effects on the survival of the microorganisms.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a stochastic food chain chemostat model with variable yields. First, we prove the stochastic model has a unique global positive solution. Second, by employing suitable Lyapunov functions, Ito's formula and some other important inequalities, the existence of a unique ergodic stationary distribution of a stochastic food chain chemostat model is researched, which can help us better understand the statistical characteristics of stochastic food chain chemostat models. Second, we investigate the extinction of the microorganism and the bacteria. Moreover, the case of extinction for bacteria but persistence for microbial species is considered. Finally, some numerical simulations are carried out to illustrate our theoretical results and the influence of the variable yields on the microorganism and the bacteria.

Abstract:A model of the chemostat with an external nutrient and an external inhibitor is considered. A preliminary analysis reduces the problem to a three-dimensional competitive system. The theory of monotone flows is applied to obtain several global results. Global results fail when questions of multiple limit cycles cannot be answered. An example of an attracting limit cycle is given.The chemostat with inhibitor can model competition between two populations of microorganisms, where one strain is resistant to an antibiotic or competition in detoxification, a system where one strain can take up the pollutant while the other is inhibited by it.

Abstract:In this paper, a stochastic delay differential equations chemostat model with nonmonotone uptake function is considered, and the nutrient conversion process involves time delay. First, we verify that there is a unique global positive solution of the stochastic system. Second, we find that the solutions of stochastic system will oscillate around the equilibria of the corresponding deterministic model, moreover, results show that time delay has critical effects on the extinction and persistence of the microorganism, that is to say, under small noise, when the time delay is small, microorganism is persistent; when the time delay is large, microorganism will be extinct. In addition, we can find by the computer simulation that large noise may lead to microorganism become extinct, although microorganism is persistent in the deterministic systems when the time delay is small. Finally, computer simulations are carried out to illustrate the obtained results and the existence of bistability is observed.

Abstract:Based on the fact that the continuous culture of microorganisms in a chemostat is subject to environmental noises, we present and analyze a stochastic competition chemostat model with general monotonic response functions and differential removal rates. The existence and boundedness of the unique positive solution are first obtained. By defining a stochastic break-even concentration for every species, we prove that at most one competitor survives in the chemostat and the winner has the smallest stochastic break-even concentration, provided its response function satisfies a technical assumption. That is to say, the competitive exclusion principle holds for the stochastic competition chemostat model. Furthermore, we find that the noise experienced by one species is adverse to its growth while may be favorable for the growth of other one species. Namely, the destinies can be exchanged between two microorganism species in the chemostat due to the environmental noise.

Abstract:In this paper, a stochastic chemostat model with variable yield and Contois growth function is investigated. The yield coefficient depends on the limiting nutrient, and the environmental noises are given by independent standard Brownian motions. First, the existence and uniqueness of global positive solution are proved. Second, by using stochastic Lyapunov function, Itô’s formula, and some important inequalities, stochastic characteristics for the stochastic model are studied, including the extinction of micro-organism, the strong persistence in the mean of micro-organism and, the existence of a unique stationary distribution of the stochastic model. Third, the necessary condition of an optimal stochastic control for the stochastic model is established by Hamiltonian function. In addition, some numerical simulations are carried out to illustrate the theoretical results and the influence of the variable yield on the microorganism.

Abstract:A mathematical model involving a syntrophic relationship between two populations of bacteria in a continuous culture is proposed. A detailed qualitative analysis is carried out. The local and global stability analysis of the equilibria are performed. We demonstrate, under general assumptions of monotonicity, relevant from an applied point of view, the asymptotic stability of the positive equilibrium point which corresponds to the coexistence of the two bacteria. A syntrophic relationship in the anaerobic digestion process is proposed as a real candidate for this model.

Abstract:In this paper, we formulate a classical stochastic delayed chemostat model and verify that this model has a unique global positive solution. Furthermore, we investigate the dynamical behavior of this solution. Abstract:In this paper, the dynamic behaviors of a Monod type chemostat model with impulsive perturbation are investigated. Using Floquet theory and small amplitude perturbation method, we prove that the microorganism-eradication periodic solution is asymptotically stable if the impulsive period satisfies some conditions. Moreover, the permanence of the system is discussed in detail. Finally, we verify the main results by numerical simulation.
A chemostat model with variable dilution rate due to biofilm growth

Abstract:In many real life applications, a continuous culture bioreactor may cease to function properly due to bioclogging which is typically caused by the microbial overgrowth. This is a problem that has been largely overlooked in the chemostat modeling literature, despite the fact that a number of models explicitly accounted for biofilm development inside the bioreactor. In a typical chemostat model, the physical volume of the biofilm is considered negligible when compared to the volume of the fluid. In this paper, we investigate the theoretical consequences of removing such assumption. Specifically, we formulate a novel mathematical model of a chemostat where the increase of the biofilm volume occurs at the expense of the fluid volume of the bioreactor, and as a result the corresponding dilution rate increases reciprocally. We show that our model is well-posed and describes the bioreactor that can operate in three distinct types of dynamic regimes: the washout equilibrium, the coexistence equilibrium, or a transient towards the clogged state which is reached in finite time. We analyze the multiplicity and the stability of the corresponding equilibria. In particular, we delineate the parameter combinations for which the chemostat never clogs up and those for which it clogs up in finite time. We also derive criteria for microbial persistence and extinction. Finally, we present a numerical evidence that a multistable coexistence in the chemostat with variable dilution rate is feasible.

Computer simulation of two chemostat models for one nutrient resource

Abstract:We consider Michaelis-Menten chemostat dynamic models, describing the process of continuous cultivation of bacteria with one organic substrate and two types of microorganisms in a case where the Michaelis-Menten constants for the two competing species of microorganisms are equal. For such a system we obtain solutions with the finite initial conditions assuming only positive values. As it is shown the problem is reduced to the solution of the nonlinear differential equation of the first order. For some parametric relations the solutions of the differential system are found in the analytical form. Using numerical procedures we construct software modules that allow modeling the chemostat cultivation for the changing parameters and visualizing the dynamics of the development process for each microorganism. A comparative analysis of some numerical methods that are used to integrate the resulting nonlinear differential equation is given.

First, we state that there is a unique global positive solution for this stochastic system. Second, using the classical approach of Lyapunov function analysis, this stochastic delayed chemostat model is discussed in detail. We establish some sufficient conditions for the extinction of the microorganism, furthermore, we prove that the microorganism will become persistent in the mean in the chemostat under some conditions. Finally, the obtained results are illustrated by computer simulations, and simulation results reveal the effects of time delay on the persistence and extinction of the microorganism.

Abstract:To maintain biodiversity and ecological balance, studying population dynamics of species by establishing different mathematical models is quite important. In this paper, we deal with a reaction-diffusion predation model with mixed functional responses. We are mainly concerned with the coexistence of the species. We firstly give the long-time behaviors of parabolic dynamical system. Secondly, we consider the steady state system, including the priori estimate, existence, uniqueness and asymptotic stability of positive solutions to the system. The result shows that the coexistence of the species depends to a great extent on their intrinsic growth rates, diffusion situations and the predation pressure imposed to preys by predators. The uniqueness and stability results show that the functional response has important effects on the model, which is mainly reflected by the predation behavior of predators. Finally, some numerical simulations are presented to illustrate the theoretical results.

Abstract:In this work, the case of the stochastic delayed chemostat model with Monod-Haldane functional response and nonlinear stochastic perturbation is investigated, in which both higher-order Gaussian white noise and Lévy jumps are introduced. Firstly, the condition for the occurrence of Hopf bifurcation in the deterministic system is derived. Secondly, the existence and uniqueness of the positive global solution of the stochastic system are established, and the stochastically ultimate boundedness of the solution is studied. To understand the statistical characteristics of the stochastic system, a key threshold is established by investigating the auxiliary equation of the corresponding stochastic system. Then, the existence of an ergodic stationary distribution of the stochastic system, which is indicative of the long-term persistence of the microbial population from a biological perspective, is proved. Furthermore, the extinction of the microorganism x for the stochastic system is studied. Finally, some important numerical experiments are provided to further support the theoretical results. The impact of various noises and time delays on the stochastic system is also analyzed using 2D and 3D graphs of the joint 2-dimensional densities.
