Abstract:China-US relations have been zigzagged since the 1990s.Neither the rising nationalism theory nor the increasing economic power theory is able to provide a good explanation for that phenomenon.This paper attributes the instability of China-US relations to the policy of pretending to be friends by these two powers.During the rise of China,there is a structural contradiction between China and the US,which produces the strategic competition and makes it difficult to develop real strategic friendship between them.Facing the lack of shared strategic interests,China and the US often soften their conflicts for the sake of a short-term improvement with nice but false description of their relations.Thus their relations have frequent up-and-downs.China-US relations are very complicated and composed of common,complementary,conflicting and confronting interests.They cannot develop proper cooperation before they know what type of interests their cooperation is based on.Due to the fact that they have more mutual unfavorable interests than favorable ones,China and the US should give more consideration to preventative/negative cooperation rather than to limit their cooperation on common interests only.If they develop cooperation inconsistent with the character of their interest relationship in a given field,China and the US will have chance to stabilize their strategic relations.
