Abstract:This issue consists of five papers from the 2003 IEEE Conference on E-commerce (CEC 03) held in Newport Beach, California, June 24–27, 2003. All these five papers have been revised and fully reviewed for journal publication. These papers are guest edited by Dr. Liang Jie Zhang at IBM and Jen-Yao Chung in cooperation with the editor-in-chief for revision and final acceptance decision. The last two papers are accepted through regular review process. In the first paper, Molina-Jimenez et al. propose an approach for representing, validating, implementing, and monitoring executable business contracts (x-contracts). Most conventional contracts contain ambiguities that prevent them from being converted straight away into x-contracts. The paper suggests the use of finite state machines (FSMs) for representation of contracts where the rights and obligationsextracted fromtheclausesof thecontract are mapped into the states, transition and output functions, and input and output symbols of FSMs. In the second paper, Lin and Chou propose a mediation protocol that is based on the single negotiation text (SNT) device suggested by Roger Fisher. This protocol provides a deal-construction game to be played by both protagonists, not only ensuring a rational strategy but also producing better outcomes than would be achieved by flipping a coin. In the third paper, Yang et al. introduce a twophase profiling framework based on a service hub that provides the infrastructure for service hosting, aggregation, and provisioning: delegated profiling and punchout profiling. This research attempts to build a flexible profiling system to dynamically collect relevant consumer data and accommodate a variety of profiling requirements of different services. In the fourth paper, Onieva et al. analyze a new entity that takespart in thenon-repudiationprotocol.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
