Social support, depression level, family intimacy and adaptability of parents of nephritic syndrome children

Abstract:Objective To investigate family intimacy and adaptability , social support and depression level of parents of nephritic syndrome ( NS) children by questionnaire survey and their correlation , and to explore the method for improving family intimacy and adaptability of NS children parents by analyzing the influencing factors of them so as to provide theoretical basis for bettering quality of life of NS children and reducing psychological adverse effects caused by disease and treatment .Methods Eighty-seven parents of NS children who were treated in Xi' an Children ' s Hospital were investigated through questionnaire .Research tools included general information questionnaire , family intimacy and adaptability scale , social support scale and Beck depression inventory .Results Actual intimacy , adaptability , social support and depression level of family of NS children were influenced by family monthly income , education degree of caregiver , major sources of medical expenses at different degrees .Differences had statistical significance (r value ranged -0.143 to 0.498, all P<0.05).Scores of family actual intimacy and adaptability of 87 NS children parents were significantly lower than those of norms ( t value was-12.831 and-9.365, respectively, both P<0.05).Incidence of depression of parents was 67.8%.Both actual and ideal intimacy , and actual and ideal adaptability of NS children parents were significantly positively correlated with social support (r value was 0.558, 0.391, 0.470 and 0.378, respectively, all P<0.05), and they were negatively correlated with total depression score (r value was -0.406, -0.270,-0.369 and -0.308, respectively, all P<0.05).Social support was negatively correlated with total depression score (r=-0.480, P<0.05).Conclusion Family intimacy, adaptability and depression level of NS children parents are closely related to social support . Therefore, it is extremely necessary for medical staff to encourage family of NS children to seek better social support .
