Abstract:The continuous problem \[ y'' = f(t,y,y'),\]\[ a_0 y(a) - a_1 y'(a) = c,\]\[ b_0 y(b) - b_1 y'(b) = d, \] and its discrete approximation \[ {{(y_{k + 1} - 2y_k + y_{k + 1} )} {h^2 }} = f({{t_k ,y_k ,(y_k - y_{k - 1} } / h}),\]\[ a_0 y_0 - a_1 {{(y_1 - y_0 )} / h} = c,\]\[ b_0 y_n + b_1 {{(y_n - y_{n - 1} )} / h} = d,\] are studied. Conditions which are known to yield a priori bounds on solutions to the continuous problem are imposed on the discrete problem. Examples are given which show that under the most general such conditions, the discrete problem may have solutions which satisfy analogous a priori bounds and also solutions which are large, irrelevant, and tend to $ + \infty $ as $h \to 0$. Other conditions are shown to give a priori bounds on all solutions to the discrete problem. Various kinds of a priori bounds are then used to construct mappings to which the algorithms of Aligower and Jeppson [1] can be applied to approximate solutions to the discrete problem. Solutions to the discrete problem are shown to converge to solutions of the continuous problem in an aggregate sense. The resulting existence theories are more constructive analogues of the results of Jackson [6], Waltman [13] and others.
