Abstract:In this paper, we consider the k-partitioning problems with partition matroid constraint and present an algorithm called the layered LPT algorithm. With the objective of minimizing the maximum load, we show that the layered LPT algorithm has a tight worst case ratio of 2-1/m. With the objective of maximizing the minimum load, we show that the layered LPT algorithm has a tight worst case ratio of 1/m for the general case and, with certain conditions, the worst ratio can be improved to m/(2m-1) for the general k case and to (m-1)/(2m-3) for the k=3 case.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the set partitioning problem with matroid constraint, which is a generation of the k -partitioning problem. The objective is to minimize the weight of the heaviest subset. We present an approximation algorithm, which consists of two sub-algorithms—the modified Edmonds’ matroid partitioning algorithm and the exchange algorithm, for the problem. An estimation of the worst ratio for the algorithm is given.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new method to evaluate the performance of an algorithm for bicriteria optimization problems, specifically worst-case boundary, which is more accurate than the original ones. We use a typical multicriteria partitioning problem to serve as an example to illustrate the strength and features of our method. We show the worst-case boundary of the classical $LS$ algorithm, and make comparison on the efficiency between the new method and the former ones. The limitation of simultaneous optimization is also shown in our paper.

Abstract:In this paper we will consider a special relaxation of the well-known online bin packing problem. In a batched bin packing problem (BBPP)–defined by Gutin et al. (2005)–the elements come in batches and one batch is available for packing in a given time. If we have K≥2 batches then we denote the problem by K-BBPP. In Gutin et al. (2005) the authors gave a 1.3871… lower bound for the asymptotic competitive ratio (ACR) of any on-line 2-BBBP algorithm. In this paper we investigate the 3-BBPP, and we give 1.51211… lower bound for its ACR.

Abstract:Rough set theory is a useful tool to deal with uncertain, granular and incomplete knowledge in information systems. And it is based on equivalence relations or partitions. Matroid theory is a structure that generalizes linear independence in vector spaces, and has a variety of applications in many fields. In this paper, we propose a new type of matroids, namely, partition-circuit matroids, which are induced by partitions. Firstly, a partition satisfies circuit axioms in matroid theory, then it can induce a matroid which is called a partition-circuit matroid. A partition and an equivalence relation on the same universe are one-to-one corresponding, then some characteristics of partition-circuit matroids are studied through rough sets. Secondly, similar to the upper approximation number which is proposed by Wang and Zhu, we define the lower approximation number. Some characteristics of partition-circuit matroids and the dual matroids of them are investigated through the lower approximation number and the upper approximation number.

Abstract:We study a bilevel optimization problem which is a zero-sum Stackelberg game. In this problem, there are two players, a leader and a follower, who pick items from a common set. Both the leader and the follower have their own (multi-dimensional) budgets, respectively. Each item is associated with a profit, which is the same to the leader and the follower, and will consume the leader's (follower's) budget if it is selected by the leader (follower). The leader and the follower will select items in a sequential way: First, the leader selects items within the leader's budget. Then the follower selects items from the remaining items within the follower's budget. The goal of the leader is to minimize the maximum profit that the follower can obtain. Let s_A and s_B be the dimension of the leader's and follower's budget, respectively. A special case of our problem is the bilevel knapsack problem studied by Caprara et al. [SIAM Journal on Optimization, 2014], where s_A=s_B=1. We consider the general problem and obtain an (s_B+ϵ)-approximation algorithm when s_A and s_B are both constant. In particular, if s_B=1, our algorithm implies a PTAS for the bilevel knapsack problem, which is the first O(1)-approximation algorithm. We also complement our result by showing that there does not exist any (4/3-ϵ)-approximation algorithm even if s_A=1 and s_B=2. We also consider a variant of our problem with resource augmentation when s_A and s_B are both part of the input. We obtain an O(1)-approximation algorithm with O(1)-resource augmentation, that is, we give an algorithm that returns a solution which exceeds the given leader's budget by O(1) times, and the objective value achieved by the solution is O(1) times the optimal objective value that respects the leader's budget.

Abstract:The optimization versions of the k-PARTITIONING problems are considered in this paper. For the objective to maximize the minimum load of m subsets, we first show that the FOLDING algorithm has a tight worst case ratio of max{2/k,1/m}. Then, we present an algorithm called HARMONIC1 with a worst case ratio at least max{ 1/k, 1/(⌈Σi=1m 1/i ⌉ +1)}. It concludes the HARMONIC1 is better than FOLDING for k > 2(⌈ Σi=1m 1/i ⌉ + 1). We further show that HARMONICI is asymptotically optimal ordinal algorithm. We also present an algorithm HARMONIC2 for solving the general κi-PARTITIONING problem.

Abstract:Many applications of data partitioning (clustering) have been well studied in bioinformatics. Consider, for instance, a set N of organisms (elements) based on DNA marker data. A partition divides all elements in N into two or more disjoint clusters that cover all elements, where a cluster contains a non-empty subset of N. Different partitioning algorithms may produce different partitions. To compute the distance and find the consensus partition (also called consensus clustering) between two or more partitions are important and interesting problems that arise frequently in bioinformatics and data mining, in which different distance functions may be considered in different partition algorithms. In this article, we discuss the k partition-distance problem. Given a set of elements N with k partitions of N, the k partition-distance problem is to delete the minimum number of elements from each partition such that all remaining partitions become identical. This problem is NP-complete for general k > 2 partitions, and no algorithms are known at present. We design the first known heuristic and approximation algorithms with performance ratios 2 to solve the k partition-distance problem in O(k · ρ · |N|) time, where ρ is the maximum number of clusters of these k partitions and |N| is the number of elements in N. We also present the first known exact algorithm in O(ℓ · 2(ℓ)·k(2) · |N|(2)) time, where ℓ is the partition-distance of the optimal solution for this problem. Performances of our exact and approximation algorithms in testing the random data with actual sets of organisms based on DNA markers are compared and discussed. Experimental results reveal that our algorithms can improve the computational speed of the exact algorithm for the two partition-distance problem in practice if the maximum number of elements per cluster is less than ρ. From both theoretical and computational points of view, our solutions are at most twice the partition-distance of the optimal solution. Abstract:We prove that there exists an absolute constant C>0 such that, for any positive integer k , every graph G with minimum degree at least Ck admits a vertex‐partition V(G)=S∪T , where both G[S] and G[T] have minimum degree at least k , and every vertex in S has at least k neighbors in T . This confirms a question posted by Kühn and Osthus (J. Comb. Theory Ser. B. 88 (2003), 29–43.) and is tight up to a constant factor. Our proof combines probabilistic methods with structural arguments based on Ore's theorem on f ‐factors of bipartite graphs.

Asymptotically Optimal Hardness for $k$-Set Packing and $k$-Matroid Intersection

Abstract:For any $\varepsilon > 0$, we prove that $k$-Dimensional Matching is hard to approximate within a factor of $k/(12 + \varepsilon)$ for large $k$ unless $\textsf{NP} \subseteq \textsf{BPP}$. Listed in Karp's 21 $\textsf{NP}$-complete problems, $k$-Dimensional Matching is a benchmark computational complexity problem which we find as a special case of many constrained optimization problems over independence systems including: $k$-Set Packing, $k$-Matroid Intersection, and Matroid $k$-Parity. For all the aforementioned problems, the best known lower bound was a $\Omega(k /\log(k))$-hardness by Hazan, Safra, and Schwartz. In contrast, state-of-the-art algorithms achieved an approximation of $O(k)$. Our result narrows down this gap to a constant and thus provides a rationale for the observed algorithmic difficulties. The crux of our result hinges on a novel approximation preserving gadget from $R$-degree bounded $k$-CSPs over alphabet size $R$ to $kR$-Dimensional Matching. Along the way, we prove that $R$-degree bounded $k$-CSPs over alphabet size $R$ are hard to approximate within a factor $\Omega_k(R)$ using known randomised sparsification methods for CSPs.

Abstract:This paper investigates the set partitioning containing kernels. This problem can also be considered as the identical machine scheduling problem with nonsimultaneous machine release times. That the algorithm MULTIFIT has a worst case bound of 6/5 is proved. Through combining MULTIFIT and LPT, an algorithm MULTILPT with a worst case bound of 7/6 has been obtained.

Abstract:In the classic k-center problem, we are given a metric graph, and the objective is to select k nodes as centers such that the maximum distance from any vertex to its closest center is minimized. In this paper, we consider two important generalizations of k-center, the matroid center problem and the knapsack center problem. Both problems are motivated by recent content distribution network applications. Our contributions can be summarized as follows: (1) We consider the matroid center problem in which the centers are required to form an independent set of a given matroid. We show this problem is NP-hard even on a line. We present a 3-approximation algorithm for the problem on general metrics. We also consider the outlier version of the problem where a given number of vertices can be excluded as outliers from the solution. We present a 7-approximation for the outlier version. (2) We consider the (multi-)knapsack center problem in which the centers are required to satisfy one (or more) knapsack constraint(s). It is known that the knapsack center problem with a single knapsack constraint admits a 3-approximation. However, when there are at least two knapsack constraints, we show this problem is not approximable at all. To complement the hardness result, we present a polynomial time algorithm that gives a 3-approximate solution such that one knapsack constraint is satisfied and the others may be violated by at most a factor of $1+\epsilon $. We also obtain a 3-approximation for the outlier version that may violate the knapsack constraint by $1+\epsilon $.

Abstract:In this paper we study a max-min $k$-partition problem on a weighted graph, that could model a robust $k$-coalition formation. We settle the computational complexity of this problem as complete for class $\Sigma_2^P$. This hardness holds even for $k=2$ and arbitrary weights, or $k=3$ and non-negative weights, which matches what was known on \textsc{MaxCut} and \textsc{Min-3-Cut} one level higher in the polynomial hierarchy.

Abstract:Matroid is a generalization of many fundamental objects in combinatorial mathematics , and matroid intersection problem is a classical subject in combinatorial optimization . However , only the intersection of two matroids are well understood . The solution of the intersection problem of more than three matroids is proved to be \textbf{NP-hard} . We will give a lower bound estimate on the maximal cardinality of the common independent sets in matroid intersections . We will also study some properties of the intersection of more than two matroids and deduce some analogous results for Edmonds' Min-max theorems for matroids intersection .

Abstract:We study a family of matroid optimization problems with a linear constraint (MOL). In these problems, we seek a subset of elements which optimizes (i.e., maximizes or minimizes) a linear objective function subject to (i) a matroid independent set, or a matroid basis constraint, (ii) additional linear constraint. A notable member in this family is budgeted matroid independent set (BM), which can be viewed as classic $0/1$-knapsack with a matroid constraint. While special cases of BM, such as knapsack with cardinality constraint and multiple-choice knapsack, admit a fully polynomial-time approximation scheme (Fully PTAS), the best known result for BM on a general matroid is an Efficient PTAS. Prior to this work, the existence of a Fully PTAS for BM, and more generally, for any problem in the family of MOL problems, has been open.

Abstract:We consider a variant of the clustering problem for a complete weighted graph. The aim is to partition the nodes into clusters maximizing the sum of the edge weights within the clusters. This problem is known as the clique partitioning problem, being NP-hard in the general case of having edge weights of different signs. We propose a new method of estimating an upper bound of the objective function that we combine with the classical branch-and-bound technique to find the exact solution. We evaluate our approach on a broad range of random graphs and real-world networks. The proposed approach provided tighter upper bounds and achieved significant convergence speed improvements compared to known alternative methods.
