Abstract:In this study, long-term aerosol particle total number concentration measurements in five metropolitan areas across Europe are presented. The measurements have been carried out in Augsburg, Barcelona, Helsinki, Rome, and Stockholm using the same instrument, a condensation particle counter (TSI model 3022). The results show that in all of the studied cities, the winter concentrations are higher than the summer concentrations. In Helsinki and in Stockholm, winter concentrations are higher by a factor of two and in Augsburg almost by a factor of three compared with summer months: The winter maximum of the monthly average concentrations in these cities is between 10,000 cm(-3) and 20,000 cm(-3), whereas the summer min is similar to 5000-6000 cm(-3). In Rome and in Barcelona, the winters are more polluted compared with summers by as much as a factor of 4-10. The winter maximum in both Rome and Barcelona is close to 100,000 cm(-3), whereas the summer minimum is > 10,000 cm(-3).During the weekdays the maximum of the hourly average concentrations in all of the cities is detected during the morning hours between 7 and 10 a.m. The evening maxima were present in Barcelona, Rome, and Augsburg, but these were not as pronounced as the morning ones. The daily maxima in Helsinki and Stockholm are close or even lower than the daily minima in the more polluted cities. The concentrations between these two groups of cities are different with a factor of about five during the whole day. The study pointed out the influence of the selection of the measurement site and the configuration of the sampling line on the observed concentrations.

Abstract:Background: Ultrafine particles in urban air represent a potentially important health risk, and are not well characterized by mass concentrations like PM10 or PM2.5. The aerosol particle number concentration (PNC) is dominated by ultrafine particles, but urban PNC measurement campaigns have only recently started in many cities and missing data impedes much research. Hence, reliable estimation techniques are needed. Past estimations of ambient concentrations of particulate matter have focused on mass concentrations. This project developed city-specific models for estimating PNC using available data on other air pollutants and meteorological variables during a period when PNC was measured, and applied them retrospectively to predict daily PNC levels during the Health Effects of Air Pollution on Susceptible Subpopulations (HEAPSS) study period in order to enable epidemiological analyses.Methods: Monitoring of PNC began in April 2001 using condensation particle counters (3022A, TSI) in Augsburg, Barcelona, Helsinki, Rome, and Stockholm. Concurrent measurements of air pollutants and weather were used, as well as selected interactions between the two, to fit a regularized linear model (also called ridge regression). This technique is robust with respect to inclusion of irrelevant explanatory variables and can be modified to be highly tolerant of missing data, two highly beneficial features when there are many explanatory variables. Results: The most important predictor variables were the nitrogen oxides. The models appear to fit PNC data relatively well, with R-2 of 0.77, 0.80, 0.58, 0.84, 0.81 respectively for the five cities. Split-halves analysis (modelling on half of the data with validation on the other halo indicates that the modelling process was fairly reliable.Conclusion: A statistical model can be applied to existing data on traffic-related air pollutants and weather variables in order to predict PNC levels. The retrospective prediction of PNC levels appears to be sufficiently reliable for use in epidemiological research. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Long-term indoor-outdoor aerosol measurement in Helsinki, Finland

Abstract:Total aerosol number concentration measurements were carried out with a condensation particle counter in a Helsinki Suburban area throughout the period from 1 November 1999 to 30 June 2000. The variation of the aerosol concentration was investigated in connection with the season, meteorological conditions and traffic activity, which were concluded as the main factors affecting the outdoor aerosol concentrations. In addition, the indoor-outdoor connection was investigated based oil the indoor/outdoor (I/O) concentration ratio. Two daily patterns of the total aerosol number concentration were observed in each season, one for weekdays and another for weekends. On average, the submicron aerosol number concentration was at its highest during the winter and lowest during the summer. The temporal variation of the total aerosol number concentration indoors followed the Outdoor variation with a small delay. Larger I/O ratios (average 0.66) were observed during the summer than during the winter and the spring (average 0.58).

Abstract:This study presents an evaluation and modeling exercise of the size fractionated aerosol particle number concentrations measured nearby a major road in Helsinki during 23 August–19 September 2003 and 14 January–11 February 2004. The available information also included electronic traffic counts, on-site meteorological measurements, and urban background particle number size distribution measurement. The ultrafine particle (UFP, diameter<100 nm) number concentrations at the roadside site were approximately an order of magnitude higher than those at the urban background site during daytime and downwind conditions. Both the modal structure analysis of the particle number size distributions and the statistical correlation between the traffic density and the UFP number concentrations indicate that the UFP were evidently from traffic related emissions. The modeling exercise included the evolution of the particle number size distribution nearby the road during downwind conditions. The model simulation results revealed that the evaluation of the emission factors of aerosol particles might not be valid for the same site during different time.

Abstract:Aerosol number size distributions have been measured since 5 May 1997 in Helsinki, Finland. The presented aerosol data represents size distributions within the particle diameter size range 8-400 nm during the period from May 1997 to March 2003. The daily, monthly and annual patterns of the aerosol particle number concentrations were investigated. The temporal variation of the particle number concentration showed close correlations with traffic activities. The highest total number concentrations were observed during workdays; especially on Fridays, and the lowest concentrations occurred during weekends; especially Sundays. Seasonally, the highest total number concentrations were observed during winter and spring and lower concentrations were observed during June and July. More than 80% of the number size distributions had three modes: nucleation mode (D-p < 30 nm), Aitken mode (20-100 nm) and accumulation mode (D-p > 90 nm). Less than 20% of the number size distributions had either two modes or consisted of more than three modes. Two different measurement sites were used; in the first (Siltavuori, 5.5.1997-5.3.2001), the arithmetic means of the particle number concentrations were 7000 cm(-3), 6500 cm(-3), and 1000 cm(-3) respectively for nucleation, Aitken, and accumulation modes. In the second site (Kumpula, 6.3.2001-28.2.2003) they were 5500 cm(-3), 4000 cm(-3), and 1000 cm(-3). The total number concentration in nucleation and Aitken modes were usually significantly higher during workdays than during weekends. The temporal variations in the accumulation mode were less pronounced. The lower concentrations at Kumpula were mainly due to building construction and also the slight overall decreasing trend during these years. During the site changing a period of simultaneous measurements over two weeks were performed showing nice correlation at both sites.

Abstract:We present results from the air pollution and turbulent exchange measurements made at the urban measurement station SMEAR III in Helsinki, Finland. First measurements at the station started in August 2004 and since then more measurements have gradually been added. We analyze data until June 2007. Temporal variations and dependencies between the size-fractionated particle number concentrations (both fine and coarse particle concentrations), gas concentrations (O-3, NOx, CO and SO2), turbulent fluxes of momentum, sensible and latent heat and CO2, and meteorological variables were studied. Most of the air pollutants and turbulent fluxes showed distinct annual and diurnal variation closely related to the local combustion sources (especially traffic) and the amount of available solar radiation. Ultrafine particles showed the most explicit dependence on traffic and traffic-related pollutants, while larger particles were more affected by the meteorological conditions. The surface fluxes were strongly affected by the specific conditions in urban environment.

Abstract:The number of ultratine particles may be a more health relevant characteristic of ambient particulate matter than the conventionally measured mass. Epidemiological time series studies typically use a central site to characterize human exposure to outdoor air pollution. There is currently very limited information how well measurements at a central site reflect temporal and spatial variation across an urban area for particle number concentrations (PNC).The main objective of the study was to assess the spatial variation of PNC compared to the mass concentration of particles with diameter less than 10 or 2.5 mu m (PM(10) and PM(2.5)).Continuous measurements of PM(10), PM(2.5), PNC and soot concentrations were conducted at a central site during October 2002-March 2004 in four cities spread over Europe (Amsterdam, Athens, Birmingham and Helsinki). The same measurements were conducted directly outside 152 homes spread over the metropolitan areas. Each home was monitored during I week. We assessed the temporal correlation and the variability of absolute concentrations.For all particle indices, including particle number, temporal correlation of 24-h average concentrations was high. The median correlation for PNC per city ranged between 0.67 and 0.76. For PM(2.5) median correlation ranged between 0.79 and 0.98. The median correlation for hourly average PNC was lower (range 0.56-0.66). Absolute concentration levels varied substantially more within cities for PNC and coarse particles than for PM(2.5). Measurements at the central site reflected the temporal variation of 24-h average concentrations for all particle indices at the selected homes across the urban area. Abstract:Abstract. This study presents an evaluation and modeling of the size fractionated aerosol number concentrations that were measured near a major road of Itäväylä in Helsinki, during 23 August – 19 September 2003 and 14 January – 11 February 2004. The measurement system contained also electronic traffic counts, on-site meteorological measurements, and urban background concentration measurements. We have evaluated the temporal variations and the dependencies on local meteorological conditions of the measured aerosol number concentrations and size distributions. The ultrafine particle (UFP) number concentrations at the roadside site were approximately an order of magnitude higher than those at the urban background site during daytime, due to vehicular emissions from the road. We also determined the statistical correlations of the sequential time series of the particle number size distributions at the roadside site, and the traffic densities. The computed Pearson correlation coefficients for the downwind cases were substantially high for UFP's (>0.6), and low for accumulation mode particles; the latter is due to the substantial contribution of long-range transported particles in that size range. We also utilized this dataset for evaluating the performance of a modeling system that consists of a roadside dispersion model CAR-FMI (Contaminants in the Air from a Road – Finnish Meteorological Institute), a meteorological pre-processing model MPP-FMI and an aerosol process model UHMA (University of Helsinki Model for Aerosol processes). Model simulations underpredicted the particle number concentrations at the measurement site, which was caused by uncertainties in the emission modeling, especially in the UFP size range.

Abstract:This study presents an evaluation of a pulse height condensation particle counter (PH-CPC) and an expansion condensation particle counter (E-CPC) in terms of measuring ambient and laboratory-generated molecular and ion clusters. Ambient molecular cluster concentrations were measured with both instruments as they were deployed in conjunction with an ion spectrometer and other aerosol instruments in Hyytiälä, Finland at the SMEAR II station between 1 March and 30 June 2007. The observed cluster concentrations varied and ranged from some thousands to 100 000 cm−3. Both instruments showed similar (within a factor of ~5) concentrations. An average size of the detected clusters was approximately 1.8 nm. As the atmospheric measurement of sub 2-nm particles and molecular clusters is a challenging task, we conclude that most likely we were unable to detect the smallest clusters. Nevertheless, the reported concentrations are the best estimates to date for minimum cluster concentrations in a boreal forest environment.
Measurements of Fine and Ultrafine Particles in Helsinki: Connection Between Outdoor and Indoor Air Quality

Abstract:In this paper, we present aerosol number concentration and number size distribution measurements in the urban area of Helsinki, Finland. The outdoor air measurements were performed over several years between 1999 and 2003 giving a rather good overview of the general properties of fine aerosols as well as their daily, weekly and seasonal characteristics. The aerosol number concentrations in urban areas were significantly higher in winter as compared with those in summer. The morning rush hour during workdays was observed as an average peak concentration of more than 4 x 10 4 cm -3 , but no clear afternoon/evening peak was observed. Typical number size distributions were calculated for the winter and summer seasons separately. During the winter the morning peak in the size distribution in urban sites was found always between 10 and 50 nm in particle diameter. These particles were probably from local traffic emissions. The summer size distributions showed that the ultrafine (below 100 nm) size mode had often two separate peaks, one below 20 nm and the other at about 50 nm. The indoor air measurements have been done during several intensive field studies in various locations around Helsinki. The simultaneous indoor and outdoor aerosol size distribution measurements showed that a good quality filter can reduce the concentrations by a factor of about 10 and therefore influence the human exposure to urban particulate air pollution significantly.

Abstract:Abstract. Long-term high-quality aerosol particulate matter (PM) concentration measurements have been conducted in southern Finland at Station for Measuring Ecosystem-Atmosphere Relations (SMEAR II, Hyytiälä) with different, yet comparable measurement equipment since 1995. In this paper, the mass concentrations measured between 2005 and 2017 using three different independent methods: i.e. 1. the cascade impactor, 2. Differential Mobility Particle Sizer (DMPS) and Aerosol Particle Sizer (APS) and 3. Synchronized Hybrid Ambient Real-time Particulate Monitor (SHARP) are compared and analysed. First, the mass concentrations of the different size classes, i.e. PM1 (PM within sub-micrometer particle diameter size range), PM2.5 (sub-2.5 µm) and PM10 (sub-10 µm), are reported. These data were further cross-compared through a bivariate fitting method. The comparison revealed an excellent equivalence among the three methods with slopes approaching unity and reasonable intercepts (≤ 1 µg m−3). An analysis of the seasonal variability of PM concentrations revealed that the mass concentrations were generally highest in summer in different size classes. The mean mass concentrations were 5.3, 5.4, and 6.5 µg m−3 for PM1, PM2.5 and PM10, respectively. The 2nd highest loadings were attained in spring, which were ca. 80–88 % of those in summer. The lowest loadings were measured in autumn and winter, when the mass concentrations were ca. 74–78 % of those in summer. Temperature had strong influence on the measured concentrations. While the high late spring and summertime temperatures promote secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation and pollen emissions, the lowest wintertime temperatures enhance the need of residential heating processes yielding anthropogenic aerosol emissions (e.g. from traffic/industry/wood burning). The wintertime concentrations can also be expected to be influenced by boundary layer dynamics, which keep the PM emissions concentrated near Earth surface especially in winter. It is noteworthy that the mass concentrations were lower than those reported prior to 2005 (at SMEAR II). The descending trend (~−0.1–0.2 µg m3 y−1) was clearly visible here for all PM size classes in spring, summer and winter, while the trend in autumn remained statistically insignificant. This might have resulted at least partly from more stringent EU air quality legislation.

Abstract:Measurements of pollutant gases, airborne particulate matter mass and composition, and meteorology have been made at a core site near downtown Atlanta, GA, since August 1998 in support of the Aerosol Research and Inhalation Epidemiology Study (ARIES). This site is one of eight in the Southeastern Aerosol Research and Characterization network. The measurement objective is to provide a long-term, multivariate dataset suitable for investigating statistical associations of respiratory and cardiovascular disease with airborne particulate matter composition, meteorology, and copollutant gases through epidemiologic modeling. Measurements are expected to continue through 2010. Ancillary multiyear measurements at additional sites in the Atlanta metropolitan area and in short-term exposure assessments have been used to estimate the exposure/measurement error associated with using data from a central site to approximate human exposures for the entire area. To date, 13-, 25-, and 53-month air quality datasets have been used in epidemiologic analyses.

Abstract:Two years of harmonized aerosol number size distribution data from 24 European field monitoring sites have been analysed. The results give a comprehensive overview of the European near surface aerosol particle number concentrations and number size distributions between 30 and 500 nm of dry particle diameter. Spatial and temporal distribution of aerosols in the particle sizes most important for climate applications are presented. We also analyse the annual, weekly and diurnal cycles of the aerosol number concentrations, provide log-normal fitting parameters for median number size distributions, and give guidance notes for data users. Emphasis is placed on the usability of results within the aerosol modelling community.

Abstract:The properties of atmospheric aerosol particles in Marseille and Athens were investigated. The studies were performed in Marseille, France, during July 2002 and in Athens, Greece, during June 2003. The aerosol size distribution and the formation and growth rates of newly formed particles were characterized using Differential Mobility Particle Sizers. Hygroscopic properties were observed using a Hygroscopic Tandem Differential Mobility Analyzer setup. During both campaigns, the observations were performed at suburban, almost rural sites, and the sites can be considered to show general regional background behavior depending on the wind direction. At both sites there were clear pattern for both aerosol number concentration and hygroscopic properties. Nucleation mode number concentration increased during the morning hours indicating new particle formation, which was observed during more than 30% of the days. The observed formation rate was typically more than 1 cm−3 s−1, and the growth rate was between 1.2–9.9 nm h−1. Based on hygroscopicity measurements in Athens, the nucleation mode size increase was due to condensation of both water insoluble and water soluble material. However, during a period of less anthropogenic influence, the growth was to a larger extent due to water insoluble components. When urban pollution was more pronounced, growth due to condensation of water soluble material dominated.

Abstract:This paper synthesizes data on aerosol (particulate matter, PM) physical and chemical characteristics, which were obtained over the past decade in aerosol research and monitoring activities at more than 60 natural background, rural, near-city, urban, and kerbside sites across Europe. The data include simultaneously measured PM10 and/or PM2.5 mass on the one hand, and aerosol particle number concentrations or PM chemistry on the other hand. The aerosol data presented in our previous works (Van Dingenen et al., 2004; Putaud et al., 2004) were updated and merged to those collected in the framework of the EU supported European Cooperation in the field of Scientific and Technical action COST633 (Particulate matter: Properties related to health effects). A number of conclusions from our previous studies were confirmed. There is no single ratio between PM2.5 and PM10 mass concentrations valid for all sites, although fairly constant ratios ranging from 0.5 to 0.9 are observed at most individual sites. There is no general correlation between PM mass and particle number concentrations, although particle number concentrations increase with PM2.5 levels at most sites. The main constituents of both PM10 and PM2.5 are generally organic matter, sulfate and nitrate. Mineral dust can also be a major constituent of PM10 at kerbside sites and in Southern Europe. There is a clear decreasing gradient in SO42- and NO3- contribution to PM10 when moving from rural to urban to kerbside sites. In contrast, the total carbon/PM10 ratio increases from rural to kerbside sites. Some new conclusions were also drawn from this work: the ratio between ultrafine particle and total particle number concentration decreases with PM2.5 concentration at all sites but one, and significant gradients in PM chemistry are observed when moving from Northwestern, to Southern to Central Europe. Compiling an even larger number of data sets would have further increased the significance of our conclusions, but collecting all the aerosol data sets obtained also through research projects remains a tedious task. Modal Structure and Spatial-Temporal Variations of Urban and Suburban Aerosols in Helsinki - Finland

Abstract:Particle number size distributions were measured in the urban and suburban atmosphere of Helsinki. In the absence of a direct traffic emission influence, the temporal variation of the aerosol particle number concentrations and their particle size distribution characteristics can be generalized within the Helsinki metropolitan region. In general, the particle number size distributions are characterized by three modes: nucleation (<25nm), Aitken (25–90nm), and accumulation (>90nm). Under certain conditions such as overlapping between the nucleation and Aitken modes, it is possible to characterize the particle number size distributions by two modes: ultrafine mode (<100nm) and accumulation mode (>100nm). Traffic combustions are considered as one of the major sources of ultrafine particles (UFP, Dp<100nm) in the urban atmosphere. The total particle number concentration is highest in the urban centers (as high as 140000cm−3, more than 90% is UFP), In general, 70–80% of the submicrometer particle number concentration is UFP in the suburban atmosphere. Close to major highways, the geometric mean diameters of the submicrometer modes are smaller and the total number concentrations can exceed 60000cm−3 (more than 60% is nucleation mode particles). According to the wind speed and temperature analysis, the submicrometer aerosol particles in the urban and suburban atmosphere consist of two components: UFP that is diluted with wind speeds and inversely proportional to the ambient temperature, and particles larger than 100nm in diameter that is re-suspended with wind and proportional to the ambient temperature. The correlation analysis showed that UFP number concentrations are best correlated within the urban areas. Particles larger than 100nm showed good correlation factors (about 0.80) within the Helsinki metropolitan area, which is an indication of similar kinds of aerosols such as regional transported particles.

Abstract:Abstract In this study we analyze air quality measurements carried out in urban background ofHelsinki area. The measurements were done by the University of Helsinki and the Helsinki Metropolitan Area Council during March-April 1991. The main interest has concentrated to sulphur and nitrogen species in the vapour phase, the ozone concentration and the concentration and size distribution of fine particles. Also meteorological data have been examined. The measurement data consists of concentrations of air pollution species in the particulate and the gas phases and has been analysed using statistical cluster methods. The size distribution of particles has been analysed with EVE deconvolution method.

Abstract:Measurement of atmospheric sub-10 nm nanoparticle number concentrations has been of substantial interest recently, which, however, is subject to considerable uncertainty. We report a laboratory characterization of a high flow differential mobility particle sizer (HFDMPS), which is based on the Half-mini type differential mobility analyzer (DMA) and nano condensation nuclei counter (A11), and show the first results from atmospheric observations. The HFDMPS utilizes the state-of-the-art aerosol technology, and is optimized for sub-10 nm particle size distribution measurements by a moderate resolution DMA, optimized and characterized low-loss particle sampling line and minimal dilution in the detector. We present an exhaustive laboratory calibration to the HFDMPS and compare the measured size data to the Hyytiälä long-term DMPS and Neutral cluster and ion spectrometer. The HFDMPS detects about two times higher 3–10 nm particle concentrations than the long-term DMPS, and the counting uncertainties are halved as compared to the long-term DMPS. The HFDMPS did not observe any sub-2.5 nm particles in Hyytiälä, and the reason for that was shown to be the inability of diethylene glycol to condense on such small biogenic particles. Last, we discuss the general implications of our results to the sub-10 nm DMPS based measurements.

Abstract:Aerosol number concentration was measured continuously in Helsinki from 1 of November, 1996 till 1 May, 1997. In addition to that number concentrations were measured simultaneously for 14 days in several places in a downtown area and in a remote site close to the city. The measured data allows us to investigate spatial variation of urban aerosol number concentration. In general, the number concentration time series measured in different places show high correlation. In areas, where traffic follows similar pattern and provides dominant local isotropic aerosol source, correlation in our case is high (about 0.8). Correlation mainly depends on the traffic intensity. During the working days concentration averages of 10min – 1h are good representatives of concentration variation in relatively large area of the city. The place for the sampling point must be chosen carefully.
