Abstract:The Cr-doped Ba2In2O5/In2O3 (C-BIO) oxide semiconductors synthesized by a solid-state reaction method were found to be a novel composite photocatalyst system with enhanced activity for water splitting. The C-BIO powder samples were characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectrometry, energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The photocatalytic activities of Pt- or NiO-loaded C-BIO and individual precursor materials were evaluated by H-2 evolution from aqueous CH3OH solution under visible light and by pure water splitting under UV light irradiation, respectively. It was found that the composite C-BIO showed a higher H-2 evolution rate in comparison with individual materials. The overall band structure, charge carrier excitation, separation, and transportation and the redox reactions for H-2 and O-2 evolution in the C-BIO system are discussed in relation to the photophysical and photocatalytic properties, and some guidelines are suggested for designing efficient composite semiconductor photocatalysts for water splitting.
Highly Efficient 2D/3D Structured CuCo2S4/CdIn2S4 Composites with a P–n Heterojunction for Boosting Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Abstract:Constructing novel surface microstructures for photocatalytic materials could significantly enhance the photocatalytic hydrogen production rate from water splitting. In this work, novel 2D/3D structured CuCo2S4/CdIn2S4 p-n heterojunction photocatalysts for water splitting were successfully prepared by a solvothermal method. The coupling of a 2D CuCo2S4 nanoplate on the surface of 3D flower-like CdIn2S4 microspheres has strengthened the visible light absorption and promoted the charge separation efficiency due to their tight contacting area. The obtained CuCo2S4/CdIn2S4 (CSCIS-2) photocatalyst exhibited a hydrogen production rate of 1320 mu mol g(-1) h(-1), which was fivefold of that for pure CdIn2S4. Additionally, cyclic tests demonstrated improved photoactivity stability of the samples. A series of photoelectrochemical characterizations confirmed the effective suppression of charge carrier recombination in CuCo2S4/CdIn2S4 composite catalysts. Finally, a rational photocatalytic mechanism was proposed based on the semiconductor band theory. This work contributes to the enrichment of sulfide-based research and applications in photocatalysis.
Simultaneous Structural and Electronic Engineering on Bi- and Rh-co-doped SrTiO3 for Promoting Photocatalytic Water Splitting

Abstract:Activating metal ion‐doped oxides as visible‐light‐responsive photocatalysts requires intricate structural and electronic engineering, a task with inherent challenges. In this study, we employed a solid (template)‐molten (dopants) reaction to synthesize Bi‐ and Rh‐codoped SrTiO3 (SrTiO3:Bi,Rh) particles. Our investigation reveals that SrTiO3:Bi,Rh manifests as single‐crystalline particles in a core (undoped)/shell (doped) structure. Furthermore, it exhibits a well‐stabilized Rh3+ energy state for visible‐light response without introducing undesirable trapping states. This precisely engineered structure and electronic configuration promoted the generation of high‐concentration and long‐lived free electrons, as well as facilitated their transfer to cocatalysts for H2 evolution. Impressively, SrTiO3:Bi,Rh achieved an exceptional apparent quantum yield (AQY) of 18.9% at 420 nm, setting a new benchmark among Rh‐doped‐based SrTiO3 materials. Furthermore, when integrated into an all‐solid‐state Z‐scheme system with Mo‐doped BiVO4 and reduced graphene oxide, SrTiO3:Bi,Rh enabled water splitting with an AQY of 7.1% at 420 nm. This work underscores the significance of simultaneous structural and electronic engineering and introduces the solid‐molten reaction as a viable approach for this purpose.
New pentlandite-like oxide semiconductors IrIn6XYO8 (X = Ga, In; Y = Ge, Sn, Ti) as potential candidates for photocatalytic water splitting under visible-light irradiation

Abstract:Narrow-band gap metal oxide semiconductors, such as those based on Pb 2+ , Bi 3+ , and Sn 2+ ions, have achieved significant success in the field of photocatalysis due to their effective utilization of visible light. The key is the presence of antibonding states derived from the lone-pair ns orbitals at the valence band maximum. In contrast, the feature of a narrow band gap in In-based metal oxides with the empty 5s orbital of the In 3+ cation is actually rather uncommon. In this study, we present a mechanistic investigation of IrIn 6 XYO 8 (X = Ga, In; Y = Ge, Sn, Ti), a class of narrow-band gap semiconductors, using first-principles calculations. Based on bond theory analysis, we determine the band edge electronic feature by elucidating the role of orbital interactions within In–O/In bonds. Leveraging the advantages of their narrow band gap and efficient carrier separation capability, IrIn 6 XYO 8 (X = Ga, In; Y = Ge, Sn, Ti) demonstrate significant potential for photocatalytic water splitting. Moreover, by integrating band edge positions and Gibbs free energy calculations, we identify that IrIn 6 XTiO 8 (X = Ga, In) are effective catalysts for overall water splitting under visible light irradiation, while IrIn 6 GaGeO 8 presents as a highly promising photocatalyst for H 2 evolution.

Abstract:Photocatalytic water splitting for solar energy conversion remains challenged by the lack of novel semiconductor photocatalysts with paramount parameters including wide light‐harvesting ranges and suitable band structures. Here, a novel triclinic‐phase bismuth chromate (Bi2CrO6) acting as a semiconductor photocatalyst candidate is reported. Triclinic Bi2CrO6 exhibits a broad absorption range of ≈650 nm with a direct bandgap of 1.86 eV and shows a suitable band structure for water splitting. Theoretical simulations of triclinic Bi2CrO6 reveal a high charge mobility, possibly owing to the strong hybridized covalent bonds, large elastic modulus, and small carrier effective mass. The triclinic Bi2CrO6 is demonstrated to work well toward photocatalytic water oxidation and hydrogen production reactions under visible light and match well with its absorption ranges. In particular, it exhibits decent photocatalytic water oxidation performance in the presence of various electron scavengers. Furthermore, the visible‐light‐driven Z‐scheme overall water splitting system is fabricated by coupling triclinic Bi2CrO6 as the oxygen evolution photocatalyst with SrTiO3:Rh as the hydrogen evolution photocatalyst, giving a stable overall water splitting with stoichiometric evolution of H2 and O2. This work presents a promising semiconductor material enabling wide‐range light harvesting for photocatalytic and photo‐electrochemical solar energy conversion.
Water-soluble Inorganic Photocatalyst for Overall Water Splitting

Abstract:In the past 45 years, the search for semiconductors as active photocatalysts for overall water splitting has focused on insoluble materials and their hybrids. An important question is whether soluble semiconductors have the capacity for photocatalysis or similar applications. The dissolved semiconductors will lose the energy band structures for light absorption; however, the undissolved part in saturated solution can still generate electrons and holes under illumination. Unfortunately, this possibility has never been realized. Here we clearly demonstrate the use of a water-soluble sodium molybdate salt as an effective photocatalyst. The material can photocatalyze simultaneously the oxidation and reduction of water under band-gap irradiation. We anticipate that, as a large and traditional class of chemical compounds, the soluble semiconductors may have great potential to be applied in numerous important applications such as catalysis, photovoltaics, light emitting diodes and artificial photosynthesis. Abstract:The research on a new series of solid photocatalysts with different crystal structures was reviewed. The first system is A2B2O7 pyrochlore-crystal type: Bi2MNbO7 (M=Al, Ga, In and Y, rare earth, and Fe), which is cubic system and space group Fd3m. The second system is ABO4 stibotantalite-crystal type: BiMO4 (M=Nb5+, Ta5+), in which both the triclinic system with space group P1 in the case of M=Ta and the orthorhombic system with space group Pnna in the case of M=Nb. The third system is ABO4 wolframite-crystal type: InMO4 (M=Nb5+, Ta5+), which is monoclinic system and space group P2/a. Although these photocatalysts crystallize in the different crystal structure, they contain the same octahedral TaO6 and/or NbO6 in the different photocatalysts. The band structure of the photocatalysts is defined by Ta/Nb d-level for a conduction band and O 2p-level for a valence band. The band gaps of the photocatalysts were estimated to be between 2.7 and 2.4 eV. Metal doped InTaO4 photocatalysts were also investigated. Under visible light (λ>420 nm) or ultra-violet irradiation, the H2 and/or O2 evolutions were observed from pure water as well as aqueous CH3OH/H2O and AgNO3 solutions. The photocatalytic activity increases significantly by loading co-catalysts such as Pt, RuO2 and NiOx on the surface of the photocatalysts. Finally, direct water splitting into H2 and O2 under visible light irradiation was firstly established using newly synthesized NiOx (partly oxidized nickel) promoted In0.9Ni0.1TaO4 photocatalyst.

Abstract:The photocatalytic activity of a semiconductor-based photocatalyst largely depends on the semiconductor's intrinsic crystal and electronic properties. We have prepared two types of La and Cr co-doped SrTiO3 photocatalysts (SrTiO3(La,Cr)) using the polymerized complex method (PCM) and sol-gel hydrothermal method (SHM). Under λ > 420-nm visible light irradiation, only the Pt-loaded SrTiO3(La,Cr) prepared by the SHM showed efficient photocatalytic activities for both H2 evolution in the presence of an I− sacrificial reagent and for Z-scheme overall water splitting when it was coupled with the Pt-loaded WO3 in the presence of I− and IO3− as the shuttle redox mediator. The superior photocatalytic activity of SrTiO3(La,Cr) prepared by the SHM has been ascribed to its more negative conduction-band position, higher carrier concentration, and higher carrier mobility, demonstrating that the design and synthesis of an H2-evolution photocatalyst with appropriate electronic properties is crucial for achieving Z-scheme overall water splitting.

Abstract:As a promising material for solar water splitting, p-type CuBi2O4 semiconductor has attracted much attention due to its unique advantages. However, the photoelectrochemical (PEC) activity of the CuBi2O4 is far from satisfactory due to its less efficient carrier transport. In this study, a doped method is used to prepare a layer of indium oxide on the surface of CuBi2O4, that is, a new In2O3/CuBi2O4 heterojunction thin film is prepared. We compare the performance of pure CuBi2O4 and In2O3/CuBi2O4 through electrochemical testing and several physical characterizations. The final experimental results show that indium oxide can improve the PEC properties of CuBi2O4 by reducing the recombination of electrons and holes and improve the charge transport.

Abstract:Organolead halide perovskites, primarily regarded as a high-performance semiconducting component in photovoltaics, have excellent optical and charge-transport characteristics that are advantageous for photocatalysis. However, their moisture-sensitive nature largely hinders their application to water splitting. Here we report a semiconductive organolead iodide layered crystalline material ([Pb8I8(H2O)3]8+[–O2C(CH2)4CO2–]4) with a bandgap of ~2.74 eV that demonstrates a high robustness over a wide pH range as well as under aqueous boiling conditions. The Earth-abundant material maintains excellent optical characteristics similar to those of perovskites, and includes suitable band positions, excellent carrier diffusion lengths (up to 1.4 μm) and long carrier lifetimes (up to 1.2 μs). When illuminated by sunlight and combined with trace amounts of a Rh co-catalyst, the hybrid iodoplumbate steadily and efficiently produces stoichiometric amounts of hydrogen and oxygen in a recyclable manner. Our findings extend the excellent optoelectronic properties of organolead halide materials from photovoltaics to photocatalytic water splitting.

Abstract:As wide range of light absorption and suitable redox potentials are prerequisites for photocatalytic water splitting, exploring new semiconductor-based materials with proper band structures for water splitting still calls for long-standing efforts. In this work, a series of photocatalysts, bismuth tantalum oxyhalide, Bi4TaO8X (X = Cl, Br), with valence band and conduction band positions at approximate to-0.70 and approximate to 1.80 eV versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), respectively, are found to be capable for both water oxidation and reduction under visible light irradiation. Using flux synthetic methods, Bi4TaO8X (X = Cl, Br) with microplatelet morphology can be successfully prepared. The photocatalyst based on these materials shows an apparent quantum efficiency as high as 20% at 420 nm for water oxidation. In addition, a Z-scheme system coupling Bi4TaO8Br with Ru/SrTiO3:Rh is successfully achieved for overall water splitting with a stoichiometric ratio of H-2 and O-2 evolutions. This work demonstrates a new series of semiconductors Bi4TaO8X (X = Cl, Br) with the promising application in the field of solar energy utilization.

Abstract:Photocatalysts Bi4Ti3−xCrxO12(x=0.00, 0.06, 0.15, 0.30, 0.40, and 0.50) with perovskite structure were synthesized by sol–gel method and their electronic structures and photocatalytic activities were investigated. The Bi4Ti2.6Cr0.4O12 photocatalyst exhibited the highest performance of H2 evolution in methanol aqueous solution (58.1μmolh−1g−1) under visible light irradiation (λ>400nm) without a co-catalyst, whereas no H2 evolution is observed for Bi4Ti3O12 under the same conditions. The UV–vis spectra indicated that the Bi4Ti2.6Cr0.4O12 had strong photoabsorption in the visible light region. The results of density functional theory (DFT) calculation illuminate that the conduction bands of Bi4Ti3O12 are mainly attributable to the Ti 3d+Bi 6p orbitals, and the valence bands are composed of O 2p+Bi 6s hybrid orbitals, while the conduction bands of chromium-doped Bi4Ti3O12 are mainly attributable to the Ti 3d+Bi 2p+Cr 3d orbitals, and the O 2p+Cr 3d hybrid obitals are the main contribution to the valence band.
Janus Chromium Dichalcogenide Monolayers with Low Carrier Recombination for Photocatalytic Overall Water-Splitting under Infrared Light

Abstract:Photocatalytic overall water-splitting is known as one of most promising methods to alleviate energy crisis. Searching for stable and efficient photocatalysts plays a critical role in this process. Here, we propose a novel class of Janus chromium dichalcogenide (CrXY, X/Y = S, Se, and Te) monolayers serving as efficient photocatalysts for overall water-splitting under infrared light irradiation. We reveal that these Janus monolayers harbor an intrinsic dipole, which promotes the spatial separation of photogenerated carriers. More significantly, these systems exhibit suitable band gaps as well as band edge positions, enabling preeminent infrared optical absorption and high carrier mobility. Furthermore, the nonradiative recombination of photo induced charge carriers in CrXY monolayers is evaluated based on time domain density functional theory. The obtained long-lived excited carriers ns) are even comparable with that in transition-metal dichalcogenide heterostructures, which benefits for the photocatalytic reaction with high efficiency. Our results provide a new guidance for designing brand new photocatalytic systems with broad optical absorption and low carrier recombination.

Abstract:Photocatalytic overall water splitting in solar–chemical energy conversion can effectively mitigate environmental pollution and resource depletion. Stable ternary metal indium zinc sulfide (ZnIn2S4) is considered one of the ideal materials for photocatalytic overall water splitting due to its unique electronic and optical properties, as well as suitable conduction and valence band positions for suitable photocatalytic overall water splitting, and it has attracted widespread researcher interest. Herein, we first briefly describe the mechanism of photocatalytic overall water splitting, and then introduce the properties of ZnIn2S4 including crystal structure, energy band structure, as well as the main synthetic methods and morphology. Subsequently, we systematically summarize the research progress of ZnIn2S4-based photocatalysts to achieve overall water splitting through modification methods such as defect engineering, heterostructure construction, and co-catalyst loading. Finally, we provide insights into the prospects and challenges for the overall water splitting of ZnIn2S4-based photocatalysts.

Abstract:For photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting, the interface interactions among semiconductors, electrocatalysts, and electrolytes affect the charge separation and catalysis in turn. We found: (1) the OEC with low crystallinity is highly ion-permeable, decreasing the interactions between OEC and photoanode due to the intimate interaction between semiconductor and electrolyte; (2) the OEC with high crystallinity is nearly ion-impermeable, is beneficial to form a constant buried junction with semiconductor, and exhibits the low OEC catalytic activity; and (3) the OEC with moderate crystallinity is partially electrolyte-screened, thus contributing to the formation of ideal band bending underneath surface of semiconductor for charge separation and the highly electrocatalytic activity of OEC for lowering over-potentials of water oxidation. Our results demonstrate that to balance the water oxidation activity of OEC and OEC-semiconductor interface energetics is crucial for highly efficient solar energy conversion; in particular, the energy transducer is a semiconductor with a shallow or moderate valence-band level.
