Abstract:A novel polarized light reflective imaging method using rotating linearly polarized light was demonstrated. By varying the incident and detection polarization angles in a fixed increments, a series of images corresponding to different combinations of incident and detection polarizations are recorded. Intensity difference corresponding to orthogonal detection polarizations are calculated pixel by pixel as a function of incident and detection polarization angle and fitted to an empirical formula. The fittings result in a set of parameters. Using various tissue samples and intralipid as phantom, the correlation between these parameters and the optical characters of the sample, such as scattering coefficient, anisotropy and orientation of macro structure was demonstrated. Images based on theses parameters may find clinical applications in diagnosis of skin diseases or assessment of skin damages.

As a result, acquisition and detection of polarized information is applied widely in various fields such as remote sensing, medical treatment and soon. However, most detect applications for the polarized information, and linear polarizer is described as the key device. Therefore, only linear polarized light information can be detected and other polarization is filtered.

Abstract:Linear differential polarization imaging can improve image quality and characterize the polarization properties of biological tissues. Degree of polarization imaging (DOPI) yields images based on photons backscattered from the superficial layers, but shows different measurement results for different incident polarization or sample orientations. The rotating linear polarization imaging (RLPI) method can characterize the anisotropic properties of tissues, by recording the linear differential polarization as a function of multi-incident and multi-detection polarization angles and gives a set of new parameters insensitive to incident polarization angles. The physical meanings, dependence on the incident polarization angles and the imaging depth of the parameters of the rotating linear polarization imaging will be compared with those of degree of polarization imaging, which indicate the application potential of the two linear differential polarization imaging methods in tissue imaging and medical diagnosis.

Abstract:A novel rotating linear polarization imaging technique is developed to characterize the anisotropic properties of tissues. Differences of orthogonal linear polarization with different incident and detection polarization angles are fitted to an analytical function to retrieve a set of parameters. Experiments with different tissues and Monte Carlo simulations indicate that two of the parameters, G and phi(3)/2, are correlated to the anisotropic property and the orientation angle of the fibrous structure in the media. The Method Of Infrared Polariametric Imaging

Abstract:Due to the low contrast, lack of details and difficulties to distinguish target from background in traditional infrared(IR) imaging systems, the detection and recognition probability of camouflage infrared target is relatively low. Compared with the traditional IR imaging systems, the method of polarimetric imaging uses polarization information, which can help detect and isolate manmade objects from the natural environment in complex. The method of infrared polarimetric imaging is proposed in this paper. The experiment builds the IR polarimetric imaging system. An IR polarizer made of BaF2 is assembled before the IR camera. By rotating the IR polarizer, twelve polarization images are obtained at every thirty degree. The gray levels of the images are calculated by program. Stokes polarization vector representation is introduced to calculate I of stokes vector and degree of linear polarization (DoLP) with polarization images. According to the character of parameter I of stokes vector and DoLP, we propose an IR polarization fusion method based on Shearlets using regional saliency analysis. This method can highlight the target area and have good performance in the fusion of IR radiation information and IR polarization characteristics. To test the effectiveness of this method, we use mid-wave infrared (MWIR) camera and long-wave infrared(LWIR) camera to get real images. Compared with original image, both the subjective and objective evaluation results indicate that the enhanced images obtained by our method have much more image details and polarization information, which is useful for target detection and recognition.

Abstract:Polarization imaging techniques are capable of probing the structural and optical properties of anisotropic turbid media. These techniques are compatible in optical layout with the corresponding none polarized optical techniques, but can provide far richer micro structural information of the complex samples, especially the structures in the sub-wavelength scale. As a label-free, non-destructive method, polarization imaging has shown many potential applications in biomedical studies and clinical practices. In this paper, we present a brief introduction on different existing polarization imaging techniques including the difference polarization (DP), degree of polarization (DOP), rotating linear polarization imaging (RLPI), polarization microscopy and Mueller matrix imaging. Moreover, we summarize the recent progresses of these polarization imaging techniques being applied in biomedical studies and clinical practices, such as detection and diagnosis of different cancers. The Mueller matrix provides the comprehensive representation of the polarization properties which are closely linked to the micro structure of the tissues. We present the recent studies in Mueller matrix polar decomposition (MMPD) and Mueller matrix transformation (MMT) to extract from the Mueller matrix elements groups of new polarization parameters with clearer physics meanings or more explicit connections to the structural features. The MMPD parameters, which reflect the depolarization, retardance and diattenuation properties of samples, and the MMT parameters, which are closely related to the anisotropy and density of sub wavelength small scatterers, are applied to characterize the distinctive features of human skin basal carcinoma, papillary thyroid carcinoma and cervix cancer in clinical samples. With the rapid technological advances in the light sources, polarization modulation optics, detectors and processors, polarization imaging devices are likely to be made smaller, faster, cheaper and easier to operate, which will open up new frontiers in biomedical studies and clinical applications.

Abstract:Recently optical techniques have been applied to the biomedical areas such as diagnostics, imaging etc. However. light scattering in biological tissues can dramatically degrade the imaging contrast and reduce the probe depth. Polarization based measurement have shown its advantages in overcoming such drawbacks. In this work, we achieved a contrast enhancement in subsurface optical imaging by changing the incident polarization states between linear and circular polarizations. Abstract:Polarization techniques can suppress multiply scattering light and have been demonstrated as an effective tool to improve image quality of superficial tissues where many cancers start to develop. Learning the penetration depth behavior of different polarization imaging techniques is important for their clinical applications in diagnosis of skin abnormalities. In the present paper, we construct a two-layer sample consisting of isotropic and anisotropic media and examine quantitatively using both experiments and Monte Carlo simulations the penetration depths of three different polarization imaging methods, i.e., linear differential polarization imaging (LDPI), degree of linear polarization imaging (DOLPI), and rotating linear polarization imaging (RLPI). The results show that the contrast curves of the three techniques are distinctively different, but their characteristic depths are all of the order of the transport mean free path length of the top layer. Penetration depths of LDPI and DOLPI depend on the incident polarization angle. The characteristic depth of DOLPI, and approximately of LDPI at small g, scales with the transport mean free path length. The characteristic depth of RLPI is almost twice as big as that of DOLPI and LDPI, and increases significantly as g increases.

Abstract:Normally, Strehl ratio, resolution, and focus depth, the parameters that are used to evaluate the performance of an optical imaging system, are always calculated by scalar diffraction method. Considering the vectorial properties of light, especially when the system numerical aperture (NA) is high, the accuracy of scalar method can no longer fulfill the requirement of analysis. The variations of properties of these parameters accompanied by using of vectorial method are discussed. In order to describe the effects of polarization clearly, assuming a system with identical polarization state within the entrance pupil, by formula deduction and numerical simulation, we conclude that due to the influence of the polarization, the maximum intensity of system diffraction spot decreases, the resolution between image plane and parallel polarized orientation of incident light drops down, then the diffraction spot loses its circular symmetry, the focus depth changes slightly, and these effects becomes more apparent with the increase of system NA. Finally, the method of calculating the off-axis images is discussed in the paper.

Abstract:Polarimetry is a powerful optical tool in the biomedical field, providing more comprehensive information on the sub-wavelength micro-physical structure of a sample than traditional light intensity measurement techniques. This review summarizes the concepts and techniques of polarization and its biomedical applications. Specifically, we first briefly describe the basic principles of polarized light and the Mueller matrix (MM) decomposition method, followed by some research progress of polarimetric measurement techniques in recent years. Finally, we introduce some studies on biological tissues and cells, and then illustrate the application value of polarization optical method.

Abstract:Detection technology of polarization imaging, which can detect the polarization state of light emitted or reflected from targets, has potential applications in space target detection and remote sensing. There are two methods for polarization state detection: time-sequential polarization detection and simultaneous polarization detection. In contrast with the well-studied time-sequential acquisition systems, the Simultaneous Imaging Polarization (SIP, one kind of simultaneous polarization detection) is a novel type of polarization imaging technology which is attracting more and more research interest. Since the polarization intensity images of 0,45,90 and 135 degrees from the same target can be simultaneously obtained on one detector, false polarization effects being introduced by targets' rapidly motion is avoided, which is difficult in time-sequential polarization detection system.There are seven major contributions in this paper. First, we gave a briefly introduction about the detection technology of imaging polarization. Second, the polarization detection principle of SIP detection system was presented. In the third part, the design of SIP experimental setup was showed. In the fourth part, we introduced image registration of the instrument in derail. The calibration of the instrument was shown in part five. Specifically, the depolarization of the instrument was calibrated by integrating sphere and the precision of polarization detection was tested by Variable Polarization Light Source (VPLS). The sixth part showed the polarization measurement results and their discussions. Finally, the conclusions and further improvement of this system were presented in the seventh part.

Abstract:Differential polarization imaging has been widely used to selectively probe the target embedded in turbid medium.A thorough understanding of image quality involved in differential polarization imaging is essential for practical use.Using polarized light Monte Carlo simulations,it has been investigated how the state of polarization of incident light and the optical properties of scattering medium affect the image contrast.The contrast for linear polarization is similar to that for circular polarization in the isotropic medium comprising small-particles.The image quality is more pronounced for circular polarization in the isotropic medium containing large-particles and the birefringent medium.Furthermore,differential polarization imaging provides better image quality for the birefringent medium compared with isotropic medium.The effect of particle-size and birefringence on the polarization characteristics of target light and backscattered light is investigated.With the help of numerical results,the polarization characteristics of target light and backscattered light,the image quality is well explained in the turbid medium mentioned above.

Abstract:Polarization is an intrinsic property of light. With the advancements in nanophotonics, it is now possible to achieve arbitrary polarization transformations in space. Incorporating special functions in different spatial dimensions expands the design freedom of metasurfaces and other optical devices. To understand and utilize the metasurface, we design a metasurface optical element to achieve single-shot, wide-field polarization imaging. Our demonstration exhibits a compact, full Stokes wide-field polarization imaging device without requiring conventional optical elements, such as moving parts or wide-field lens sets. Wide-field polarization imaging devices are potential candidates for machine vision and biological tissue imaging applications.

Abstract:Polarized light microscopy is widely used in observation of optical anisotropic characteristics of samples. It has been applied to the studies in many ifelds, such as the geology of rocks and minerals, analysis of mural pigment, inspection of textiles, and detection of biological tissues. In biomedical studies, polarized light microscopy can provide rich micro structural information, which can be useful for the detection of abnormal tissues. However, the orientation distribution of anisotropic samples can inlfuence the polarization measurement. Recently, we designed a new type of polarized light microscopy based on Mueller matrix imaging method. In this microscopy all the elements of the Mueller matrix are simultaneously determined from the analysis in the frequency domain of the time-dependent intensity of the light beam at every pixel of the camera. The variations in intensity are created by the two compensators continuously rotating at different angular frequencies. Through the subsequent transformation processing of the received polarization image, we can reduce the inlfuence of sample orientation on polarization measurement and obtain the micro structural information more effectively. With the advantages of simple structure, rapid measurement and high precision, polarized light microscopy based on Mueller matrix shows a good development prospect.

Abstract:Available polarization-difference imaging techniques face serious challenges in imaging speed and application range. To address these issues, this paper proposes an underwater dynamic polarization-difference imaging method with greater applicability. First, the intensity distribution of backscattered light is estimated via the Stokes vector. Afterward, the differential operation between the total intensity of light and the amplified estimation result of backscattered light makes clear imaging immediately accessible. Regardless of the movement states and polarization characteristics of the target, experimental results consistently demonstrate that the backscattered light can be eliminated to a great extent, and imaging quality and applicability are significantly enhanced. Meanwhile, the proposed method is immune to unexpected factors such as uneven illumination and has good stability. More importantly, there are also apparent advantages in terms of imaging time.

Contrasts of the polarization difference projection images with linearly and circularly polarized lights

Abstract:Polarization gating has been an attractive technique for optical imaging in turbid media. In this study, we investigate the polarization difference projection image (PDPI) in turbid media with linearly and circularly polarized lights. An iris is placed at the focal spot of the imaging optics to examine the influence of spatial filtering on imaging contrast. Polystyrene microsphere suspensions in Rayleigh and Mie domains are used as the phantoms. Scattering coefficient g, and anisotropy factor g are varied independently to obtain the quantitative relation between the PDPI contrasts and the optical properties of the phantom. We also compare the PDPI contrast with the contrast of degree of polarization (DOP). Primary results show that the PDPI contrast is better than DOP image contrast either in Rayleigh or Mic scattering domain. In the Mie scattering domain, linear and circular PDPI contrasts are compared for different scattering coefficients. We also discussed how Fourier spatial gating improves the image contrast. The results are compared with Monte Carlo simulation.

Abstract:Polarization imaging is an important branch of the microscopy technique that can provide additional information and enhanced contrast. The illumination system of a polarization microscope enables many different polarizations but makes the setup bulky, complicated, and slow. Here, we design and fabricate an ultrathin planar axicon metalens that also enables parallel illumination with different polarizations. Our results reveal a diffraction-limited size and high degree of linear polarization. To verify our approach, we accurately map the polarization angle of an aluminum grating, which is used as a polarizer. Furthermore, we demonstrate that elliptical polarization can be generated without additional design. A single metalens has the same capabilities as a conventional illumination module containing a polarizer, compensator, and rotation-stage/optical modulator. In addition, our device has the potential to enable rapid super-resolution polarization imaging. The new method could be useful in many applications and areas, including, e.g., materials research and biomedicine.
