Abstract:The estimation method of tire-road friction coefficient is studied in this paper.Firstly simple Brush tire model is built and verified by single wheel bench test.Then a dynamics model for steering system and a 3 DOF vehicle dynamics model are established.Finally,a nonlinear observer for tire side-slip angle and wheel-road friction coefficient is designed based on tire cornering characteristics.On this basis,a combined estimation algorithm is proposed,in which a threshold dynamic control is added for being also adapted to the case of sudden change in road friction.The results of simulation and test show that the estimation method proposed is effective and feasible.

Abstract:The tyre-road friction coefficient (TRFC) is not only related to pavement conditions, but also affected by factors such as tyre material, tyre pressure and ambient temperature; in addition, there are problems such as sensor measurement noise, signal transmission hysteresis, parameter uncertainty or time denaturation in the actual vehicle system. These problems make the real-time robust estimation of the friction coefficient and its stability analysis more complicated, Therefore, the identification of TRFC has always been a key topic and difficult issue in research. This paper provides a comprehensive technical review of the currently widely used TRFC estimation method. First, various filters and observers and their improved versions to solve different problems are introduced. Then the model-based estimation algorithm is comprehensively expounded. The paper summarises the research results of sensor-based and neural network-based methods, analyses the new method brought about by the structural characteristics of distributed drive electric vehicles to estimate the friction coefficient, and looks forward to the future development direction.

Abstract:A tire-road friction coefficient estimation based on normalized tire model theory was developed to improve the estimation convergence speed and accuracy.Once the slip slope is estimated,the normalized tire model theory can be used to distinguish the different adhesion condition,and the maximum tire-road friction coefficient can be estimated using linear interpolation method.A RLS based data process method was included.The simulation results show that,this method can effectively reduce the convergence speed,and the estimation accuracy can be improved by 30%.

Abstract:Estimation of the tire-road friction using the signal of on-board sensors is very important for the vehicle dynamic control systems. This paper presented a tire -- Croad friction coefficient estimation algorithm based on a modified Dugoff model. The proposed algorithm first determined the tire slip ratio and the instantaneous longitudinal friction coefficient using vehicle and wheel dynamics parameters. Then, the friction coefficient was estimated through the modified Dugoff model with subsection method and converse solution method. The effectiveness and performance of the algorithm were demonstrated through vehicle dynamics simulations on different road surface conditions.

Abstract:Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part D: Journal of Automobile Engineering, Ahead of Print. A simplified tire finite element model modeling and simulation method with high efficiency and accuracy is proposed to address the issues of poor efficiency and low accuracy in tire finite element simulation. Firstly, the detailed finite element model of the tire is established, and the viscoelastic material parameters are determined through theoretical analysis and simulation verification. Then, the Hyperelastic material parameters are obtained through cyclic Tensile testing, and finally, the static tire condition test verification is completed. Based on the established detailed finite element model of the tire, the influence of different rubber materials on the dynamic characteristics of the tire is studied. On this basis, simplified friction and structure models are proposed to complete the establishment of a simplified tire finite element model. The simulation results of lateral and longitudinal slip conditions are compared with experimental data by implanting a finite element friction model that considers slip velocity and contact pressure. Through simulation analysis, it was found that the tread compound has a significant impact on the dynamic characteristics of the tire, while other compounds have a relatively small impact. Simplifying the tire finite element model can significantly improve the efficiency of finite element simulation and reduce convergence issues. The comparison accuracy between the finite element model simulation results and experimental data is relatively high, with the average accuracy of longitudinal force, lateral force, and correction moment reaching 89%, 95%, and 81%, respectively. This verifies the correctness and effectiveness of the simplified tire finite element model modeling and simulation method. This method provides certain reference significance for improving the efficiency of tire finite element simulation and providing virtual matching between tires and the entire vehicle.

Abstract:Abstract The accurate estimation of road friction coefficient in the active safety control system has become increasingly prominent. Most previous studies on road friction estimation have only used vehicle longitudinal or lateral dynamics and often ignored the load transfer, which tends to cause inaccurate of the actual road friction coefficient. A novel method considering load transfer of front and rear axles is proposed to estimate road friction coefficient based on braking dynamic model of two-wheeled vehicle. Sliding mode control technique is used to build the ideal braking torque controller, which control target is to control the actual wheel slip ratio of front and rear wheels tracking the ideal wheel slip ratio. In order to eliminate the chattering problem of the sliding mode controller, integral switching surface is used to design the sliding mode surface. A second order linear extended state observer is designed to observe road friction coefficient based on wheel speed and braking torque of front and rear wheels. The proposed road friction coefficient estimation schemes are evaluated by simulation in ADAMS/Car. The results show that the estimated values can well agree with the actual values in different road conditions. The observer can estimate road friction coefficient exactly in real-time and resist external disturbance. The proposed research provides a novel method to estimate road friction coefficient with strong robustness and more accurate.

Abstract:Tyre-road friction coefficient is hard to detect while it is important for vehicle control systems, especially the vehicle active safety control systems. This paper presents a maximum aligning moment method which requires no additional sensors if the vehicle is equipped with an electric power steering (EPS) system. A non-linear observer method is designed for the estimation of friction coefficient as well as the continual estimation of tyre slip angles. One combined estimation method is proposed to compensate for the drawbacks of the two methods above. These estimation methods are verified by computer simulations with experimental results in various conditions.

Abstract:Tire-road friction condition is crucial to the safety of vehicle driving. The emergence of autonomous driving makes it more important to estimate the friction limit accurately and at the lowest possible excitation. In this paper, an early detection method of tire-road friction coefficient based on pneumatic trail under cornering conditions is proposed using an intelligent tire system. The previously developed intelligent tire system is based on a triaxial accelerometer mounted on the inner liner of the tire tread. The friction estimation scheme utilizes the highly sensitive nature of the pneumatic trail to the friction coefficient even in the linear region and its approximately linear relationship with the excitation level. An indicator referred as slip degree indicating the utilization of the road friction is proposed using the information of pneumatic trail, and it is used to decide whether the excitation is sufficient to adopt the friction coefficient estimate. The friction coefficient is estimated by the ratio of the normalized lateral force and the nonlinear adaptation of the slip degree. The tire forces and pneumatic trail are estimated by neural networks. The experimental validation demonstrates that the pneumatic trail has a good potential to precisely predict the friction coefficient at a low excitation under cornering conditions.

Abstract:The performance of vehicle active safety electric control system often depends on accurate estimation of the tire/road friction coefficient. The control target parameters should change along with the tire/road friction coefficient and implement different control strategy and control algorithm. Due to the interaction mechanism between tire and ground is very complex, so the multi-freedom rim-beam dynamic model with tire dynamic friction model is set up in this paper. And the key parameters influence characteristics was simulated analysis and the tire/road coefficient estimation model was established. The wheel speed signal conditioning circuit was designed and filtered out the noise by soft threshold wavelet. Finally, vehicle field tests of high, low and joint road were carried out, and the brake pressure (brake torque), vehicle velocity (wheel speed), slip ratio and wheel speed sensor sine wave time-frequency analysis and tire-road friction coefficient estimation were analyzed.

Abstract:A road friction coefficient estimation algorithm for dynamic stability control system was developed. Tire force was observed using tire force observer: the estimated brake wheel cylinder pressure was used to calculate brake force; the road force was calculated from wheel dynamics equation; vertical load of tire, the partition of used road friction coefficient and the slip ratio were calculated. All of them were used for road friction estimation and the verification experiment was done. Experimental results show that this algorithm can accurately estimate tire road friction coefficient and can be used for dynamic stability control system.

Abstract:A new device was developed for tire tread block slip friction tests. Then the friction characteristics were investigated under different loads and contact roads. Based on this, a friction model for contact between tire tread block and different road surfaces was developed. A finite element slip friction model of rubber block was developed for studying the tread contact stress, stiffness under different pattern slope angles, and ditch radius. Results indicate that friction coefficient between tread and ice road increases when the temperature decreases; different tread patterns have a certain influence on the friction coefficient; its average difference was less than 10%. Different roads impact the coefficient of friction more significantly; the greater the pattern slope, the greater the radial stiffness.

Abstract:It＇s important to monitor the longitudinal road friction for automotive dynamic control systems.An improved longitudinal friction model with three parameters was proposed in this paper by analyzing experimental data and Pacejka＇s Magic Formula,and the calculating algorithm for the unknown variables was determined.The model has the similar shape as Magic Formula,and it has fewer variables,simpler shape and lower computational complexity than the commonly used tire models.It can provide a good illustration on the non-linear rules of longitudinal tire forces changing with the wheel slip ratio and other factors.Its validity was proven by using experiments and comparison with the Pacejka Magic Formula（MF） model and others.

Abstract:Runway friction coefficient is a crucial parameter that reflects the airworthiness of airport runway and measuring the runway friction coefficient is a prerequisite for ensuring flight safety. Many studies have been conducted on the measurement methods for runway friction coefficient, but most of them are still at the theoretical research level. Although new methods and ideas are constantly being proposed, they are still in the conceptual design and exploration stage. A method based on numerical simulation for runway friction coefficient measurement is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the numerical analysis method is used to explore the interaction mechanism between tire and runway. Based on finite element analysis (FEA), multi-physics field coupling analysis is carried out to reveal the influence of different working conditions on friction coefficient, and to obtain the variation law. Secondly, a friction coefficient measurement method is proposed based on the analysis results, and the friction coefficient estimation models are constructed to achieve a new measurement method that only relies on the tread frictional stress to estimate the friction coefficient with specific working condition. Finally, a friction coefficient measurement system is constructed and used to validate the method. The experimental results indicate that the error between the estimated and actual measurements is from 2.47% to 4.13%. The experiments have verified the effectiveness and accuracy of the estimation model based on numerical analysis method, providing ideas for researching runway friction coefficient measurement methods.

Abstract:The tire-road friction coefficient is difficult to detect,while it is important for vehicle control systems,especially for vehicle active safety systems.A Brush tire model was introduced,and the lateral characteristics were verified by experimental results of a single wheel test bench.Based on the analysis of dynamic characteristics of an electric power steering(EPS) system,the total aligning moment of the steering system was measured by the sensors equipped with EPS.The linear relation between maximum total aligning moment and tire-road friction coefficient was derived.A theoretical approach for detecting the peak value of total aligning moment was proposed based on three assumptions.A maximum aligning moment method(MAMM) was designed for the estimation of tire-road friction coefficient.The numerical and the experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can be applied for various roads with satisfactory accuracy.

Abstract:The friction coefficient at the wheel–rail interface is crucial for the traction, braking and guidance of the railway vehicle. Real-time knowledge of the friction coefficient could reduce wheel–rail damages as well as improve the vehicle running performance. The friction coefficient is very difficult to be directly measured; hence an indirect measurement method using an unscented Kalman filter was proposed in this paper. A re-adhesion controller was also developed. The method was assessed in a Simpack-Simulink co-simulation environment. The friction coefficient estimation method was found to be accurate, and the re-adhesion controller improved the vehicle braking performance as well as reduced the wheel–rail damage.

Abstract:The dynamic road adhesion coefficients at 30km/h and 50km/h for dry condition were measured through the real vehicle equipped with a test system driving on the asphalt dry road. The test system included the fifth wheel instrument, the wheel speed sensors, the programmed strain amplifier and ACME portable industrial personal computer. The results show that longitudinal peak adhesion coefficients at 30km/h and 50km/h for the dry condition are about 0.7. Longitudinal adhesion coefficient increases rapidly with the slip rate increasing and soon reaches the maximum. The longitudinal peak adhesion coefficient occures when the slip rate is about 12%.

Abstract:The friction coefficients of tread rubber under different contact pressures and sliding velocities were tested on a laboratory abrasion and skid tester LAT 100,and a proposed friction law was applied to characterize the frictional behavior of tread rubber displayed in the experiment.In order to verify the friction law,the steady-state cornering rolling of the rubber wheel incorporated with the enhanced friction model was simulated with the ABAQUS package.On this basis,the enhanced friction model was applied to the tire cornering simulations at slip angles in a wide range using the explicit solver and the contact pressure distributions of several cornering conditions were investigated.The results show that the computed tire cornering responses are in good agreement with experimental results and the numerical noises are controlled within a smaller range.

Abstract:Road adhesion coefficient is an important parameter in vehicle active safety control system. Many researchers estimate road adhesion coefficient by total tire self-aligning torque (SAT, also called front-axle aligning torque), which obtains the average road adhesion coefficient of front wheels, thus leading large estimation error. In this paper, a novel estimation of road adhesion coefficient based on single tire SAT, which is obtained by tire aligning torque distribution, is brought forward. Due to the use of SAT, the proposed estimation method is available in steering only condition. The main idea of the proposed method is that road adhesion coefficient is estimated by single tire SAT instead of total tire SAT. The single tire SAT is closer to real tire torque state, and it can be obtained by aligning torque distribution, which makes use of the ratio for the aligning torque of front-left wheel and front-right wheel. Tire sideslip angle used in torque distribution is estimated by unscented Kalman filter (UKF). Two coefficients, including front-left and front-right tire-road friction coefficients, are estimated by iteration algorithm form single tire SAT. The final road adhesion coefficient is determined by a coefficient identification rule, which is designed to determine which tire-road friction coefficient as the final road adhesion coefficient. Both simulations and tests that use gyroscope/lateral accelerometer/global position system (GPS)/strain gauge are conducted, to validate the proposed methodology that can provide accurate road adhesion coefficient to vehicle active safety control.
