Abstract:The extensive attentions to the pollution of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in China and the international society were summarized in this paper. This review paper is focus on the survey data of pesticide utilization in Pearl River Delta (PRD) and the pollution levels of chlorinated pesticide in environmental media, such as water, atmosphere, sediment and soil, and aqueous organism in this region. Finally, some drawbacks such as the inefficient quality administration systems for environment were pointed out for the abatement of these kind pesticides, and some good control strategies in PRD region were put forward tentatively. The fundamen-tal research to further research on POPs control and the monitoring database of the pollutant sources and ultimate sinks should be expanded. Strengthened science-based decision-making and research on their substitutes to reduce risks from POPs are needed. Leg-islation and efficient law execution for more effective environmental management are indispensable. Also, monitoring systems, pre-dicting fates of chemicals and effective mechanism of the POPs pesticides risk communication and emergency response should be developed.

Abstract:The development of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) control policy in China in the context of international concerns on POPs was reviewed. The aspects of the Chinese POPs control strategies were analyzed, and compared with those of developed counterparts (e.g. U.S., E.U., Japan). Currently, while the legal framework on POPs management, which complies with international guidelines has been established, it should be improved in the areas of special POPs management, risk assessment, the precautionary principle, life-cycle management and technical support capacity. The analysis of Chinese POPs policy and suggestions for strengthening the science-based decision making capacity are not only useful for Chinese decision-makers, but also a case study for developing world and make a great contribution for the global elimination of POPs to make a toxic-free future.

Abstract:Persistent organic pollutants (POPs)had attracted a great deal of attention due to their se-vere toxicities (carcinogenicity,teratogenicity,mutagenicity)in recent years.Research on the pol-lution and disposal technology of POPs had become a hot spot in environmental engineering and sci-ence disciplines.Through a large number of relevant literatures,the definition,sources and charac-teristics of POPs were described in detail.Pollution status,migration process and its harm of POPs in natural environment were summarized,and the countermeasures were put forward according to the present pollution situation.These would provide some scientific basis for the research and treatment of POPs pollution in the future.

Abstract:Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) have become serious environmental problems of global concern, and actions for reducing and controlling those compounds have been proposed or taken in many countries. This paper examines the historical background of POPs production and contamination in China and the related legal framework that has evolved as part of the development process for effective POPs management. China is still lacking effective and imperative measures for POPs management, especially for those not used as pesticides. However, as a major signatory, China has paid much attention to POPs control and initiated a series of activities to control POPs. The Convention has been taken into force in November 2004 in China and substantial work has been done in terms of international cooperation on POPs control and reduction. Some strategies for the reasonable and effective management of POPs are presented based on the available information on their production, contamination, and management in China.

Abstract:In this paper,the definition,resources and characteristics of persistent organic pollutants were introduced. This paper described the cause why POPs threatens the environment. The pollution status of POPs (especially the dirty dozen) and the quantity and resources of them in the atmosphere, waters and soil were analysed. The concentrations of them in biota were compared, showing that the POPs were adsorbed at the base of food web and bioaccumulation and biomagnified to significant levels at higher trophic levels and threatened the environment and the man stronger. The relevant basic researches were reviewed, and the following deeper researches and guidance for environment monitoring were predicted.

Abstract:Since signing Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants(POPs),China has made remarkable achievements on institutional structure,policy formulation,monitoring management,pollution control,research & development and demonstration projects,public awareness by means of integratedly applying administrative,legal,technical and economic measures.Since the list of POPs is living,there have been 10 kinds of POPs listed in the Convention in the recent three years,which creates new challenges for China on POPs prevention and control.Where strengthening POPs prevention and control has become one of the focus areas on environmental protection in China,the prevention and control on POPs has been entering the transition period.Significant changes in terms of objectives,goals,methods and measures of POPs prevention and control shall be taken place.

Abstract:Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are one of hotspots in scientific researches, and now POPs have became one of worldwide problems. At the same time, main sources of POPs are described . Treatment technologies of POPs are reviewed. Abstract:Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are increasing in waterways due to human activities and their concentration above a certain level is highly toxic with acute damage. In this manuscript, we have compiled the data of these POPs in Chinese freshwater channels, lakes, and corresponding coastal areas from the studies performed in the last twelve years. All the water channels were contaminated with Polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), Organo-chlorine pesticides (OCPs), and Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Although most of these water channels maintain the GB5749–2006 guideline for POPs, Liaohe River, Huaihe River, Yangpu Bay, Taihu Lake, Liuzhou surface water, Pearl River Estuary, and Jinzhou Bay have toxicity levels and the maximum concentration of these POPs is above the defined safe limits. Pharmacokinetic data for thirty-eight POPs by SwissADME showed that they are highly penetrable through the skin (Log Kp -6.02 to 0.15) and orally absorbable (bioavailability score 0.55). Therefore, these waterways have acute damaging potential. This indicates that using these water channels for municipal supplies might lead to massive health hazards. Therefore, careful mapping and treatment are necessary before the utilization of water from these water reservoirs.

Abstract:After the"Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants(POPs)"has gone into effect,many countries will have more regard for POPs.The environmentally sound management of POPs is the important part of the implementation of the Convention.The requirements of environmentally sound management about POPs and POPs waste in relational international conventions,organizations and some countries are introduced.The oversea situation of legislation and management of POPs waste and the kinds and basic contents of main laws are analyzed.The essential characteristics of oversea management of POPs waste abroad are summarized.And it is pointed out that China must improve the environmentally sound management system for POPs waste and strengthen the POPs waste pollution supervision to implement the Convention on POPs.

Abstract:Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) mainly cause harm to the reproductive function of human being and animal kingdom, which is a serious threat to human and animal survival or reproduction. This paper blacklisted 70 kinds of POPs and outlined their character and pollution hazards. Therefore, China should strengthen basic research in POPs pollution, strengthen the environmental management and the publicity of environmental law to curb POPs pollution. In addition, some legislative measures should be proposed, laws and regulations of POPs should be formulated, and the law enforcement should be strengthen. © 2011 IEEE.

Abstract:Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) present in foods have been a major concern for food safety due to their persistence and toxic effects. To ensure food safety and protect human health from POPs, it is critical to achieve a better understanding of POP pathways into food and develop strategies to reduce human exposure. POPs could present in food in the raw stages, transferred from the environment or artificially introduced during food preparation steps. Exposure to these pollutants may cause various health problems such as endocrine disruption, cardiovascular diseases, cancers, diabetes, birth defects, and dysfunctional immune and reproductive systems. This review describes potential sources of POP food contamination, analytical approaches to measure POP levels in food and efforts to control food contamination with POPs.
