Abstract:We describe the self-assembly of silver nanocubes (AgNC) into dense bowl-shaped arrays using a template made from polystyrene nanospheres (PSNS). Interestingly, we found that most AgNCs were arranged facet-to-facet. When used as substrates for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), we observed that the SERS hot spot positions were located at the corners of the cubes. This was confirmed using the formation of a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of 1-dodecanethiol (DDT) covering the cubes' facet surface, whilst the pinholes in the DDT SAM at the corners were subsequently filled with 2-mercaptopyridine (MPy). Due to the high enhancement from the densely arranged AgNCs, single molecule detection was achieved from this SERS substrate and evidenced using the bi-analyte Raman technique.
Sonochemical Synthesis of Amorphous Long Silver Sulfide Nanowires

Abstract:Long silver sulfide nanowires have been prepared via the thioglycolic acid (TGA)-assisted sonochemical method. The transmission electron microscope (TEM) and field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) images reveal that the nanowires have uniform width and length. The selected area electron diffraction (SAED) pattern indicates that the Ag2S nanowires are amorphous. Furthermore, the mechanism for the TGA-assisted sonochemical synthesis of Ag2S nanowires has been preliminarily presented.

Abstract:A facile method to control the synthesis and self-assembly of mondisperse Ag and Ag2S nanocrystals with a narrow-size distribution is described. Uniform Ag nanoparticles of less than 4 nm were obtained by thermolysis of Ag oleate complexes in the presence of oleic acid and dodecylamine, and monodisperse Ag nanoparticles of less than 10 nm were also prepared in one step by using dodecylamine and oleic acid as capping agents. Moreover, the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) properties of the Ag substrates have also been investigated. It is worth mentioning that these Ag nanoparticles and assemblies show great differences in the SERS activities of Rhodamine B dye. In addition, the superlattices of Ag2S nanocrystals were synthesized with Ag oleate complexes, alkanethiol, and sulfur as the reactants. The resulting highly monodisperse nanocrystals can easily self-assemble into interesting superstructures in the solution phase without any additional assembly steps. This method may be extended to the size-controlled preparation and assembly of many other noble-metal and transition-metal chalcogenide nanoparticles. These results will aid the study of the physicochemical properties of the superlattice assemblies and construction of functional macroscopic architectures or devices.

Abstract:Semiconductor Ag2S nanocrytsals with different morphologies were synthesized in quaternary W/O microemulsion solution containing Triton X-100, cyclohexane and n-pentanol. And particularly, the synthesis of Ag2S nanorods with lengths up to 2.0-3.5 μm and aspect ratio of 20-70 has been reported for the first time. The reaction conditions were optimized through investigations on the influences of ω0, the concentration of the reactant, and the aging time on the morphology and the sizes of the products. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was utilized to characterize the shape and size of the obtained products.

Abstract:Synthesis of mesoporous materials has become more and more important due to their wide application. Nowadays, there are two main ideas in their preparation. One is focused on the templating method. The other is based on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) constructed from molecular building blocks. Herein, we exploit a new idea for their facile and general synthesis, namely, using "artificial atoms" (monodisperse nanoparticles) as uniform building blocks to construct ordered mesoporous materials. Mesoporous Ag, Ag2S, and Ag2Se have been obtained to demonstrate this concept. On the other hand, we also describe a facile method to prepare the "building blocks". Ag nanoparticles were obtained by direct thermal decomposition of AgNO3 in octadecylamine, and Ag2S/Ag2Se nanoparticles were synthesized by reaction between sulfur or selenium powder and Ag nanoparticles formed in situ. This approach for Ag, Ag2S, and Ag2Se nanoparticles is efficient, economical, and easy to scale up in industrial production.

Abstract:Silver sulfide hollow sphere-silver nanoparticle heterostructures were prepared by the simultaneous cation exchange and oxidation-reduction reactions of Cu2S hollow spheres with Ag+ ions in aqueous solution. The obtained Ag2S-Ag hybrid hollow spheres consisted of Ag2S hollow spheres about 600 nm in diameter and 20-30 nm in thickness with a single Ag nanoparticle attached to the outer surface of each Ag2S hollow sphere. The products were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). When CuS hollow spheres were used as the reactive template instead of Cu2S hollow spheres, Ag2S hollow spheres were the predominant product under similar reaction conditions, indicating that the Cu(I) in the Cu2S hollow spheres served as a reductant for reducing Ag ions to metallic Ag, and hence played a key role in the formation of the Ag2S-Ag hybrid hollow spheres. Furthermore, secondary deposition of Ag on the Ag2S-Ag hybrid hollow spheres resulted in the formation of larger Ag2S-Ag hybrid hollow spheres consisting of Ag2S hollow spheres with around a half of the surface coated by a Ag film.
L-Cysteine-Assisted Synthesis and Optical Properties of Ag2s Nanospheres

Abstract:Ag2S nanospheres were synthesized by a hydrothermal reaction using l-cysteine as the sulfur source and chelating reagent. The X-ray diffraction patterns and X-ray photoelectron spectra confirmed that the products were monoclinic α-Ag2S. The optical absorption spectra of the Ag2S nanospheres showed very broad absorption peaks centered at about 515 nm in wavelength. Photoluminescence spectra exhibited emission peaks centered at ∼637 nm in wavelength accompanied by weaker shoulder peaks at ∼590 nm in wavelength when the sample was excited with a wavelength of 490 nm. In addition, the formation mechanism of the Ag2S nanospheres was also determined. The l-cysteine-assisted hydrothermal route using l-cysteine as the sulfur source and chelating reagent provides an alternative approach to generate sulfide nanocrystals.

Abstract:In this work, Ag(NH3)2NO3 microcubes are obtained by directly evaporating the silver ammonia complex solution. In Na3Cit solution, each Ag(NH3)2NO3 microcube can crumble into lots of Ag3Cit sub-microcubes with uniform size, which serve as sacrificial templates to yield Ag sub-microcages. The as-obtained Ag cages possess ultra-high surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensitivity towards R6G and thiram.

Abstract:Global hollow nanoparticles of Cu7S4 and Ag2S were prepared by Kirkendall effect using Cu2O and Ag2O nanoparticles as precursors. XRD, TEM and SEM were used to characterize the nanoparticles. The mechanism of the reaction was studied and the easiness of different oxides to react with Na2S Solution were discussed in terms of theoretical point of view. The results indicate that the reaction occured from outer part to inner part of precursor nanoparticles. The morphology of the hollow nanoparticles was very similar to that of precursor nanoparticles.

Abstract:A thioglycolic acid (TGA) assisted hydrothermal process has been developed to synthesize submicron-sized copper sulfide (CuS) hollow spheres via the reaction between copper sulfate (CuSO4) and thioacetamide (CH3CSNH2). X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy were employed to characterize the obtained product. Furthermore, the possible mechanism and the critical factors for the TGA-assisted hydrothermal synthesis of the CuS hollow spheres have been preliminarily presented.

Abstract:Hexagonal cap-like nanocrystals (nanocaps) of Ag2S are synthesized through a simple ion-exchange reaction by using polar {111} faceted, hexagonally shaped AgBr nanoplates as sacrificial templates, in which the bottom/top surfaces presented distinct reactivity with S2− ions due to their different atomic compositions and arrangements. Surprisingly, the Ag2S nanocaps presented strong surface-enhanced Raman scattering activity.
Phase-Selective Synthesis and Self-Assembly of Monodisperse Copper Sulfide Nanocrystals

Abstract:Single-crystalline, monodisperse copper sulfide nanocrystals with controlled sizes, shapes. and phases were successfully synthesized via a simple, low-cost, and environmentally friendly chemical reaction of CuCl, and S in oleylamine at 100-180 degrees C. It was found that the molar ratios of [CuCl2]:[S] played the critical role for the control of the sizes, shapes, and phases of copper sulfide nanocrystals. The hexagonal CuS nanodisks, hexagonal CuS nanoribbons consisting of face-to-face stacked nanodisks, and monoclinic Cu1.75S nanoribbons consisting of face-to-face stacked nanodisks were obtained when the molar ratios of [CuCl2]:[S] were 1:1, 2:3, and 2:1, respectively. It was believed that the van der Waals force and dipole-dipole interaction were responsible for the self-assembly of copper sulfide nanodisks. Finally, the copper sulfide nanocrystals were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron micrscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared, and its growth mechanism was primarily discussed.

Abstract:Water-soluble cubic structure Ag2Se (α-Ag2Se) nanocrystals smaller than 5 nm can be obtained by cation-exchange reaction at room temperature, using water-dispersed ZnSe nanocrystals as precursors, which is achieved by controlling the injection speed of AgNO3 solutions via a syringe pump in the presence of the stabilizer of trisodium citrate. Meanwhile, the thermal stability of the product Ag2Se nanocrystals is studied. The results show that the mean sizes and shapes of the precursor ZnSe and product Ag2Se nanocrystals are similar, and Se anion sublattices between them are topotaxial. In addition, no phase transition is observed for the product Ag2Se (cubic structure) nanocrystals below 180 °C. The present synthetic method based on cation-exchange reactions can also be applied to the syntheses of PbSe and CuSe nanocrystals.

Selective Sulfuration at the Corner Sites of a Silver Nanocrystal and Its Use in Stabilization of the Shape

Abstract:This paper describes a new approach to site-selective sulfuration at the corner sites of Ag nanocrystals including triangular nanoplates and nanocubes. The reaction simply involved mixing an aqueous suspension of the Ag nanocrystals with an aqueous solution of polysulfide at room temperature. As a precursor to elemental S, polysulfide is highly soluble in water and can directly react with elemental Ag upon contact to generate Ag(2)S in the absence of oxygen. The reaction was easily initiated at the corner sites and then pushed toward the center. By controlling the reaction time and/or the amount of polysulfide added, the reaction could be confined to the corner sites only, generating Ag-Ag(2)S hybrid nanocrystals with greatly improved stability against aging at 80 and 100 °C in air than their counterparts made of pure Ag.
Toward the Synthesis of Sub-15 nm Ag Nanocubes with Sharp Corners and Edges: The Roles of Heterogeneous Nucleation and Surface Capping

Abstract:We report a polyol method for the facile synthesis of Ag nanocubes having sharp corners and edges, together with edge lengths below 15 nm. The rapid nucleation of Ag atoms was facilitated through the addition of a trace amount of SH(-) to generate Ag2S clusters while the corners and edges of the nanocubes were sharpened through the introduction of Br(-) as a regulator of the growth kinetics and a capping agent for the Ag(100) surface. Because of their much smaller size relative to the more commonly used capping agent based on poly(vinylpyrrolidone), Br(-) ions are more effective in passivating the {100} facets on very small Ag nanocubes. The mechanistic roles of these additives, along with the effects of their interactions with other species present in the reaction solution, were all systematically investigated. The concentration of SH(-) was found to be a particularly effective parameter for tuning the edge length of the nanocubes. As a result of the understanding gained during the course of this study, Ag nanocubes with uniform edge lengths controllable in the range of 13-23 nm could be reliably produced. The nanocubes of 13.4 ± 0.4 nm in edge length constitute the smallest nanocrystals of this kind reported to date; they also possess sharper corners and edges relative to the limited examples of sub-20 nm Ag nanocubes reported in the literature. The availability of such small and sharp Ag nanocubes will open the door to an array of applications in plasmonics, catalysis, and biomedicine.
Transformation of Ag Nanocubes into Ag-Au Hollow Nanostructures with Enriched Ag Contents to Improve Sers Activity and Chemical Stability

Abstract:We report a strategy to complement the galvanic replacement reaction between Ag nanocubes and HAuCl4 with co-reduction by ascorbic acid (AA) for the formation of Ag-Au hollow nanostructures with greatly enhanced SERS activity. Specifically, in the early stage of synthesis, the Ag nanocubes are sharpened at corners and edges because of the selective deposition of Au and Ag atoms at these sites. In the following steps, the pure Ag in the nanocubes is constantly converted into Ag(+) ions to generate voids owing to the galvanic reaction with HAuCl4, but these released Ag(+) ions are immediately reduced back to Ag atoms and are co-deposited with Au atoms onto the nanocube templates. We observe distinctive SERS properties for the Ag-Au hollow nanostructures at visible and near-infrared excitation wavelengths. When plasmon damping is eliminated by using an excitation wavelength of 785 nm, the SERS activity of the Ag-Au hollow nanostructures is 15- and 33-fold stronger than those of the original Ag nanocubes and the Ag-Au nanocages prepared by galvanic replacement without co-reduction, respectively. Additionally, Ag-Au hollow nanostructures embrace considerably improved stability in an oxidizing environment such as aqueous H2O2 solution. Collectively, our work suggests that the Ag-Au hollow nanostructures will find applications in SERS detection and imaging.
Converting Ag₂S-CdS and Ag₂S-ZnS into Ag-CdS and Ag-ZnS nanoheterostructures by selective extraction of sulfur

Abstract:A mild three-step solution strategy is developed to prepare Ag-MS (M=Zn, Cd) nanoheterostructures composed of MS nanorods with silver tips. First, Ag2S-MS heterostructures are synthesized by following a solution-liquid-solid mechanism with Ag2S nanoparticles as catalysts, then the Ag2S sections of the heterostructures are converted into silver nanoparticles by selective extraction of sulfur. Notably, for the prepared Ag-CdS heterostructures, the localized surface plasmon resonance of silver remarkably intensifies the photoluminescence of CdS by enhancing the excitation light absorption, which is beneficial for potential applications of CdS nanoparticles in the fields of biolabeling, light-emitting diodes, and so forth. The strategy reported herein would be useful for designing and fabricating other metal-semiconductor hybrid nanostructures with desirable performances.

Abstract:A facile method is described here on synthesis of high-aspect-ratio Ag/C core/sheath nanocables via a hydrothermal process in the presence of Ag2S and in the absence of any surfactant or polymers. We demonstrate that glucose can act as a reducing reagent and provide carbon source to form a core-shell structure. The S2- ion plays an important role in controlling the Ag+ concentration and then the anisotropic growth of nanocables, and at the same time, the uncoated Ag particles get eroded and reused via Ag2S intermediate. The formation of 1D Ag nanowire inner core is attributed mainly to the low growth rate of Ag nanocrystalline nuclei and the later carboncoating protection.
