Abstract:Physiography and land use patterns influence streams water quality by affecting non-point source (NPS) pollution process. However, each landscape factor may affect the NPS pollution process differently with the variations of the spatial scale and season. Thus, quantitative analysis of each landscape metrics scale effect and determination of the abrupt change-point in the relationship between stream water quality and the metrics is very helpful for landscape planning of water quality protection. Based on water quality monitoring data for four years in 12 sub-watersheds of a typical headwater watershed in Eastern China, we adopted regular and partial redundancy methods to quantify the spatial scale effects and seasonal dependence of various landscape metrics impact on stream water quality, and then to identify the abrupt change-point of the water quality along the gradient of landscape metrics. Results revealed that the pure effects of different categories of landscape metrics on stream water quality were in the following order: landscape configuration metrics (20.5-31.6%) > physiographic metrics (4.0-15.9%) >landscape composition metrics (3.2-7.5%). The spatial scale effect of physiography impact on stream water quality was the most significant, while the impact of landscape configuration on water quality had the highest seasonal sensitivity. The overall water quality variation was better explained by buffer zone scale than by catchment scale landscape characteristics, and this phenomenon was more obvious during the wet season than during the dry season. In the studied watershed, we identified the largest patch index of farmland (LPIfar) and the landscape shape index of forest (LSIfor) as the key landscape metrics at sub-watershed scale and buffer zone scale, respectively. The LPIfar > 7.0% at the sub-watershed scale and LSIfor < 5.5 at the buffer zone scale were suggested as the preferred landscape planning parameters to protect the stream water quality efficiently. Results indicated that, to protect water quality, landscape regulation should follow the scale-adaptability measures and consider the landscape thresholds, which cause abrupt changes in water quality.

Spatial Scale Effect of Urban Land Use Landscape Pattern in Shanghai City

Abstract:Based on geographic information system (GIS) and remote sensing (RS) techniques, the landscape classes of urban land use in Shanghai City were extracted from SPOT images with 5 m spatial resolution in 2002, and then, the classified data were applied to quantitatively explore the change patterns of several basic landscape metrics at different scales. The results indicated that landscape metrics were sensitive to grain- and extent variance. Urban landscape pattern was spatially dependent. In other words, different landscape metrics showed different responses to scale. The resolution of 40 m was an intrinsic observing scale for urban landscape in Shanghai City since landscape metrics showed random characteristics while the grain was less than 40 m. The extent of 24 km was a symbol scale in a series of extents, which was consistent with the boundary between urban built-up area and suburban area in Shanghai City. As a result, the extent of 12 km away from urban center would be an intrinsic handle scale for urban landscape in Shanghai City. However, due to the complexity of urban structure and asymmetry of urban spatial expansion, the intrinsic handle scale was not regular extent, and the square with size of 24 km was just an approximate intrinsic extent for Shanghai City.
[Spatial Variance Characters of Urban Synthesis Pattern Indices at Different Scales].

Abstract:Scale holds the key to understand pattern-process interactions, and indeed, becomes one of the corner-stone concepts in landscape ecology. Geographic Information System and remote sensing techniques provide an effective tool to characterize the spatial pattern and spatial heterogeneity at different scales. As an example, these techniques are applied to analyze the urban landscape diversity index, contagion index and fractal dimension on the SPOT remote sensing images at four scales. This paper modeled the semivariogram of these three landscape indices at different scales, and the results indicated that the spatial variance characters of diversity index, contagion index and fractal dimension were similar at different scales, which was spatial dependence. The spatial dependence was showed at each scale, the smaller the scale, the stronger the spatial dependence. With the scale reduced, more details of spatial variance were discovered. The contribution of spatial autocorrelation of these three indices to total spatial variance increased gradually, but when the scale was quite small, spatial variance analysis would destroy the interior structure of landscape system. The semivariogram models of different landscape indices were very different at the same scale, illuminating that these models were incomparable at different scales. According to above analyses and based on the study of urban land use structure, 1 km extent was the more perfect scale for studying the spatial variance of urban landscape pattern in Shanghai. The spatial variance of landscape indices had the character of scale-dependence, and was a function of scale. The results differed at different scales we chose, and thus, the influence of scales on pattern could not be neglected in the research of landscape ecology. The changes of these three landscape indices displayed the regularity of urban spatial structure at different scales, i. e., they were complicated and no regularity at small scale, polycentric at moderate scale, and circle-zoning at big scale.
Scale Issues in the Driving Force Analysis of Land Change

Abstract:Scale issue is a focus but also a difficult theme in the driving forces analysis of land change.While statistics is very popular in analyzing drivers of land change,there is no particular research on the impact of scale in this domain.This article summarizes the methods often used in the driving force analysis of land change,recognizes five scale issues needed to concern.They are the impact of 5 situations(the extent of the study area,the grain size,the time range,the time period of data,and the classification accuracy)on the analysis results when using the term of'scale',and all of these 5 situations can be concluded into data aggregation.If the impact of data aggregation is not treated correctly,the potential dangers exist in two aspects:(1)the results is meaningless,(2)the policies based on the analysis are incorrect and harmful.So far,there are 3 approaches to solve this problem:(1)basic entity approach,(2)sensitivity analysis approach,and(3)frame-independent analysis approach.These approaches can be applied and more researches are needed in the domain of the driving force analysis of land change.

Abstract:<p>The properties of geographical phenomena vary with changes in the scale of measurement. The information observed at one scale often cannot be directly used as information at another scale. Scaling addresses these changes in properties in relation to the scale of measurement, and plays an important role in Earth sciences by providing information at the scale of interest, which may be required for a range of applications, and may be useful for inferring geographical patterns and processes. This paper presents a review of geospatial scaling methods for Earth science data. Based on spatial properties, we propose a methodological framework for scaling addressing upscaling, downscaling and side-scaling. This framework combines scale-independent and scale-dependent properties of geographical variables. It allows treatment of the varying spatial heterogeneity of geographical phenomena, combines spatial autocorrelation and heterogeneity, addresses scale-independent and scale-dependent factors, explores changes in information, incorporates geospatial Earth surface processes and uncertainties, and identifies the optimal scale(s) of models. This study shows that the classification of scaling methods according to various heterogeneities has great potential utility as an underpinning conceptual basis for advances in many Earth science research domains.</p>

Abstract:The pattern, process and their relationships are fundamental issues in geography. Patterns and processes in nature, such as ecosystem distribution, regional climatic changes, land use and land cover, and rainfall or runoff series, display complex behavior and often intertwine with scale problems. Many scale-dependent phenomena have been exemplified in scientific researches, and scale issues are found at the center of methodological discussions in both physical and human geography. However, some existed research works failed to make a distinction among the concepts of scale and scaling, to employ consistent scaling paradigm, and to adopt an objective criterion for assessing the scaling effects in geography. This paper attempts to calibrate those deviations and to present new branch subject of geography-Scaling Methodology of Geography. After introducing scaling approaches, upscaling and downscaling, in geography, we place a focus on the research objects, categories and contents of proposed subjects, and three basic principles, scientific principle, economic principle and operational principle, are proposed in scaling works. Finally, ten key issues are presented for establishing the scaling methodology of geography. The key questions are as follows: (1) how does spatial heterogeneity scale in scaling ? (2) how do ratio variables change with scale in scaling? (3) how do dominating processes change with scale in scaling? (4) how does property of processes change with scale in scaling? (5) how does sensitivity change with scale in scaling? (6) how does predictability change with scale in scaling? (7) what is sufficiency for simple aggregation and disaggregation in scaling? (8) how do disturbance factors change with scale in scaling? (9) can scaling transcend several scales and scale fields? (10) is noise factor changeable with scale in scaling?
An analysis on the landuse pattern of Shanghai city based on different spatial scales

Abstract:On the londuse background of Shanghai city, the structure properties under different grains of regional landscape are studied by using the methods of landscape ecology, and meanwhile, the variogram make it available to analyze the structure properties under different extents. The paper concludes as follows: (1)The landscape indices differ greatly with different grains. According to this research area, the research area takes on the most typical urban landscape properties with the grain of 20m. (2)The special structure of the landscape indices are basically the same with different extents, yet smaller extent are more sensitive to the change of small scale, vice versa. (3)Different landscape indices have different responses to change of grains and extents. In this paper, LSI, SHDI, SHEI are more sensitive to the change of grain, yet CONTAG and PAFRAC is less sensitive. To the change of extents, SHDI and CONTAG are more sensitive, while PAFRAC is less.(4)Different proceeds have different influence on different landscape indices, so that the special structure of different landscape indices differs a lot. (5)Generally, it shows that the patches along the directions of E0啊45癢 varies more.
Effects of changing spatial resolution on the results of landscape pattern analysis using spatial autocorrelation indices

Abstract:Understanding the relationship between pattern and scale is a central issue in landscape ecology. Pattern analysis is necessarily a critical step to achieve this understanding. Pattern and scale are inseparable in theory and in reality. Pattern occurs on different scales, and scale affects pattern to be observed. The objective of our study is to investigate how changing scale might affect the results of landscape pattern analysis using three commonly adopted spatial autocorrelation indices,i.e., Moran Coefficient, Geary Ratio, and Cliff-Ord statistic. The data sets used in this study are spatially referenced digital data sets of topography and biomass in 1972 of Peninsular Malaysia. Our results show that all three autocorrelation indices were scale-dependent. In other words, the degree of spatial autocorrelation measured by these indices vary with the spatial scale on which analysis was performed. While all the data sets show a positive spatial autocorrelation across a range of scales, Moran coefficient and Cliff-Ord statistic decrease and Geary Ratio increases with increasing grain size, indicating an overall decline in the degree of spatial autocorrelation with scale. The effect of changing scale varies in their magnitude and rate of change when different types of landscape data are used. We have also explored why this could happen by examining the formulation of the Moran coefficient. The pattern of change in spatial autocorrelation with scale exhibits threshold behavior,i.e., scale effects fade away after certain spatial scales are reached (for elevation). We recommend that multiple methods be used for pattern analysis whenever feasible, and that scale effects must be taken into account in all spatial analysis.

Abstract:Non-point source pollution is the main factor causing water quality deterioration. Landscape patterns affect the transmission of non-point source pollutants. Many studies have been carried out to analyze the correlation between landscape patterns and water quality, while most former studies neglected the scale effect. The Jiulong River basin in southeast China was selected as the study area. Based on a landscape cover map generated from satellite images, we determined the riparian buffer zones with different widths, set the catchment as the complementary scale, and then established the multiple linear regression models to explore the relationship between landscape metrics and water quality indices at different scales. The degree of significance of the effect of various landscape metrics on the water quality at different scales was quantitatively analyzed in this paper by using multiple linear regression analysis. The results showed that not only the impact of landscape metrics but also the influence of land cover type on the water quality indices would vary when the spatial scale changed. The credible regression models established in this study can help regional managers understand the correlation between landscape and water quality, and the regression results can be used for land use allocation in a watershed.

Abstract:The concept of scale is applied very broadly, scale is undoubtedly one of the most fundamental aspects of any research. There are four common connotations of scale in geography: cartographic scale or map scale, geographic scale or extent, resolution, and operational scale. Science of scale is considered to seek answers to the following questions. (1)The role of scale in the detection of patterns and processes, and its impact on the modeling; (2) The identification of domains of scale (invariance of scale) and scale thresholds; and (3) scaling, and the implementation of multiscale approaches for analysis and modeling. In context of remote sensing, applicability of some basic physics laws, such as, Helmholtz principle, Beer law, and Planck law, must be examined carefully, due to heterogeneity of pixels. And based on the same reasons, we should not use remote sensing physics models and applied models optionally on any resolutions, while these models are created on one special resolution. Some approaches that are used to examine scale invariance of model have been discussed in the paper. Concepts of spatial autocorrelation and spatial statistics have been introduced as a basis for understanding the effects of scale, wavelets and fractals provide a more comprehensive framework for prediction of scale effects. The quadtree data structures provide a consistent, logical way to multiscale modeling that is well grounded in theory and compatible with many ideas of physical process.
Analysis on Land Use Landscape Pattern Changes and Driving Force in Hangzhou City

Abstract:Based on the interpretation of TM images,the theory of landscape-ecology and the method of quantitative analysis,the characteristics and changes of landscape pattern in Hangzhou city during the past 15 years(1991—2005) were analyzed and meanwhile the driving force of landscape changes were discussed based on canonical correspondence analysis(CCA) method.The results showed:(1) The land-use landscape pattern changed greatly,mainly the area of farming landscape and water landscape declined significantly,but the area of building landscape increased,which of 43.85%came from farming landscape;(2) Number of patches(NP) and Shannon's diversity index(SHDI) and fragmentation (FN,) increased,however,the dominance(D) decreased.These results showed that landscape pattern would became smaller and smaller;(3) CCA method clearly demonstrated the correlations and spatial feature between landscape pattern indices and driving forces at eight districts in Hangzhou city.

Abstract:At the study area of Xigu District in Lanzhou City, using RS & GIS as tools we apply Diversity, Dominance, Fragmentation, Isolation and so on to study the quantitative, fractal and spatial characters of landscapes structures in the four sub-regions divided by the morphological features. Using the Fractal Theory to establish the fractal structure models, we analyze the complexity and stability of various landscapes distribution with fractal dimension value. The spatial distribution characteristics of landscape mosaic structure are also expounded. At the end of the paper we discuss the relevant problems on the main factors which control and effect on the spatial pattern of landscapes as well as on landscape optimization and management.
Study on the Coupling Relationship between Landscape pattern and Water Environment Quality Based on GIS - A Case Study of the Jinghang Grant Canal (Hongzhou Section)

Abstract:In this paper, a case study on the spatial and temporal variation characteristics of water environment quality in the Jinghang Grant Canal (Hongzhou Section) and coupling relationship between the landscape pattern and water environment quality is carried out based on the Land sat TM image of remote sensing and GIS platform, combining environmental quality monitoring and statistic sampling data of Hangzhou city. Quantitative research shows that: (1) The analysis data of water quality in 11 monitoring sections of the Jinghang Grant Canal (Hangzhou section) shows that the water quality is aggravating from south to north; (2) Based on A value evaluation method, the water quality analysis shows that there are 6 monitoring sections in 11 monitoring sections of the Jinghang Grant Canal (Hangzhou section) under the pollution standard, including 4 secondary pollution above monitoring sections, accounting for 36.4% of the total; (3) The study on the relationship between landscape structure components and water quality factor shows that the water landscape has a significant influence on water quality, but agricultural water is opposites, building landscape has a negative influence with water, but no significant; (4) Research shows that most indices of the landscape pattern have not significant relationship with water environmental quality, but the new building indices, such as RACW and RAW, have significant relationship with water environmental quality.; (5) Studies show that landscape pattern has a strong effect on water environment quality, which can provide theoretical basis for relevant studies. But the coupling mechanism is further research.

Abstract:Based on ArcGIS, Erdas, GuidosToolbox, Conefor and other software platforms, using morphological spatial pattern analysis (MSPA) and landscape connectivity analysis methods, this paper quantitatively analysed the scale effect, edge effect and distance effect of the Nanjing urban green infrastructure network pattern in 2013 by setting different pixel sizes (P) and edge widths in MSPA analysis, and setting different dispersal distance thresholds in landscape connectivity analysis. The results showed that the type of landscape acquired based on the MSPA had a clear scale effect and edge effect, and scale effects only slightly affected landscape types, whereas edge effects were more obvious. Different dispersal distances had a great impact on the landscape connectivity, 2 km or 2.5 km dispersal distance was a critical threshold for Nanjing. When selecting the pixel size 30 m of the input data and the edge wide 30 m used in the morphological model, we could get more detailed landscape information of Nanjing UGI network. Based on MSPA and landscape connectivity, analysis of the scale effect, edge effect, and distance effect on the landscape types of the urban green infrastructure (UGI) network was helpful for selecting the appropriate size, edge width, and dispersal distance when developing these networks, and for better understanding the spatial pattern of UGI networks and the effects of scale and distance on the ecology of a UGI network. This would facilitate a more scientifically valid set of design parameters for UGI network spatiotemporal pattern analysis. The results of this study provided an important reference for Nanjing UGI networks and a basis for the analysis of the spatial and temporal patterns of medium-scale UGI landscape networks in other regions.

Abstract:The purpose of this scale-related study is to find the underlying mechanisms of ecological phenomena by using appropriate spatial-temporal scales.Scale holds the key to understand pattern-process interactions,but due to limitations of existing theories and methods,in-depth studies on scales in landscape ecology have been limited,especially in urban ecosystems with complex structures.Recently,many new methods were developed and applied in landscape ecology dealing with spatial-temporal processes,e.g.,semivariogram analysis,point pattern analysis,and wavelet analysis.Wavelet analysis can associate a spatial or temporal pattern with different scales and locations and is effective in characteristic scale detection.With one scene of SPOT-5 imagery,one dimensional wavelet analysis was conducted to study the structural features of the urban landscape in the Nanjing metropolitan region.One transect traversed the metropolitan in the main diagonal direction of the city,and three sections named A,B and C were distinguished which corresponded to the northern suburban,urban and southeast suburban area,respectively.To check the validity of main diagonal sampling,three short transects from each of the three areas were randomly placed near the main diagonal line.The results were then compared with the corresponding results along the main diagonal direction,and no remarkable differences were found,suggesting that we could use the results derived from the main diagonal line to represent features of the landscape.Three common mother wavelets,Haar,Morlet and Mexican Hat,were used.The results indicated that the Morlet wavelet was most suitable for detecting characteristic scales of the urban landscape.The Mexican Hat wavelet could be used for the same purpose but it lacks the ability to reveal some details of scales,while Haar wavelet was not capable of detecting characteristic scales with continuous imagery data.The one-dimensional Morlet wavelet transform showed that the landscape of both northern and southeastern suburban areas had one characteristic scale corresponding to the average grain size of cropland patches,362 m and 446 m,respectively.While for the urban area,multiple characteristic scales(about 292,835 m and 2200 m) were distinguished,which corresponded to architectural clumps,small blocks and large blocks,respectively.The results revealed that a grain-nesting structure existed in the urban area,in the order of architectural clumps,small blocks,and large blocks.This nesting structure is significantly more complicated than that in suburban areas.

Abstract:Introduction: The selection of an optimal scale or granularity in landscape analysis is pivotal for uncovering inherent patterns and changes driven by processes. Variations in spatial resolution can significantly alter the proportions and distributions of various landscape types, thereby impacting the assessment of landscape patterns. Despite its importance, the scale factor is frequently neglected in studies focusing on long-term landscape dynamics. Methods: Bridging this gap, we utilized remote sensing imagery data from 1986 to 2020 for Lushui City, integrating remote sensing (RS) and geographic information system (GIS) technologies to generate land cover maps. Our focus centered on investigating the sensitivity of landscape pattern indices within the 30–1000m scale. Combining the first scale domain with an information loss assessment model, we identified the optimal granularity for the analysis, conducting a detailed spatiotemporal examination of landscape pattern from 1986 to 2020 using the index analysis method. Results and discussion: The results show that: (1) The dominance of forests in Lushui City, yet reveal a significant increase in construction land area over the study period, primarily driven by the conversion of forest and grassland. (2) Among the 10 examined indices, four (PD, ED, TE, and LSI) demonstrated predictable responses to changes in granularity, while three (PAFEAC, COHESION, AI) exhibited unpredictable stepwise reactions. Three indices (LPI, SHDI, PLAND) displayed minimal regularity to granularity changes. (3) The optimal long-term landscape analysis granularity for Lushui was identified as 100 m. (4) Before 1996, the city's landscape exhibited characteristics of aggregation, good connectivity, and minimal anthropogenic disturbance. However, post-1996, the landscape experienced disruptions, leading to an overall increase in fragmentation. The expansion of cultivated land and construction land due to urbanization has intensified landscape fragmentation. However, policies such as converting cropland to forest and planned ecological civilization initiatives have restored forest coverage and improved landscape cohesion and connectivity in Lushui City. This research offers vital insights for ecological planning and resource management in alpine valley watershed cities, deepening our grasp of landscape pattern evolution.

Spatial Heterogeneity of Landscape Ragmentation at Multi-Scales——a Case Study in Wujang River Basin,Guizhou Province,China

Abstract:Effectively revealing landscape pattern and its spatial heterogeneity are basic for researches of landscape function and dynamic.Based on the land use classification data,this paper explored the spatial pattern,spatial heterogeneity and its scale-dependence for effective mesh size using ArcGIS 9.3,FRAGSTATS 3.3 and GS + 7.0,with a case study of Wujiang River Basin in Guizhou Province,China.The results show that the relation between spatial heterogeneity of landscape fragmentation and extent exhibits significant power law with a characteristic scale of 4590 m.The regions with lower values of effective mesh size are the northeast mountainhill area,the west of central hill-basin area and the north of west plateau-mountain area,which possess the similar characteristic of dissected topography;the regions with higher values of effective mesh size are the east of central hill-basin area and the north of west plateau-mountain area with comparatively subdued topography.The structural components such as topography and climate play the main role in the spatial heterogeneity;the data series is complex due to the influences of topography,climate,and human activities,and exhibits significant spatial auto-correlation with range of 33 km.The fractal dimensions are bigger,and the auto-correlation scales are smaller in the directions of northeast-southwest and east-west than the north-south and southeast-northwest directions.Isotropic heterogeneity and anisotropic heterogeneity are in accordance with the physical geographical characteristics.The results can provide a basis for biodiversity conservation,land use management and regional landscape planning and construction.

Abstract:Most current statistical models for downscaling the remotely sensed land surface temperature (LST) are based on the assumption of the scale-invariant LST-descriptors relationship, which is being debated and requires an in-depth examination. Additionally, research on downscaling LST to high or very high resolutions (similar to 10 m) is still rare. Here, a simple analytical model was developed to quantify the scale effect in downscaling the LST from a medium resolution (similar to 100 m) to high resolutions. The model was verified in the Zhangye oasis and Beijing city. Examinations of the simulation datasets that were generated based on airborne and space station LSTs demonstrate that the developed model can predict the scale effect in LST downscaling; the scale effect exists in both of these two study areas. The model was further applied to 12 ASTER images in the Zhangye oasis during a complete crop growing season and one Landsat-8 TIRS image in Beijing city in the summer. The results demonstrate that the scale effect is intrinsically caused by the varying probability distribution of the LST and its descriptors at the native and target resolutions. The scale effect depends on the values of the descriptors, the phenology, and the ratio of the native resolution to the target resolution. Removing the scale effect would not necessarily improve the accuracy of the downscaled LST.
