Abstract:The synthesis and catalytic testing of several dendron-ordered mesoporous silica hybrids are reported. These materials are active in both the nitroaldol (Henry) reaction and the transesterification of glyceryl tributyrate to afford methyl esters. In both reactions it is observed that dendrons terminated with primary amines are more catalytically active than samples containing dendrons terminated with secondary amines. On a mmol nitrogen per gram of silica basis, the first generation dendrons are the most active for both chemistries, and the SBA-15 samples display a higher activity than the MCM-41 samples. The pore-size effect observed is consistent with significant diffusion resistance in the MCM-41 samples. The activity trend observed in the SBA-15 materials is consistent with decreased cooperative effects between the amines and surface silanols as the dendrons become larger. Clear trends are observed indicating that higher generation dendrons are more selective to alcohol formation in the Henry reaction. The dendron catalysts are much more active and stable than simple amines attached to silica in the transesterification of triglycerides. Preliminary results shown indicate that these materials can also catalyze more demanding chemistries, an example of which is the Aldol condensation of 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural and acetone. The results shown indicate that dendron-OMS hybrids can serve as effective solid base catalysts for a diverse range of chemistries. (c) 2009 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A series of stable chiral C-1-symmetric dinitrogen ligands were conveniently synthesized in high yields by condensation of chiral amines [(-)-exo-bornylamine or (+)-(1S,2S,5R)-menthylamine] with various substituted imidazolecarbaldehydes. With the assistance of base, the ligand L1 in combination with CuCl2.2H2O (2.5 mol-% or 5.0 mol-%) can efficiently promote nitroaldol (Henry) reactions between a variety of aldehydes and nitromethane. Both aromatic and aliphatic aldehydes were tolerated in our catalytic system, affording the expected nitroalcohol products in high yields (up to 97%) and with good enantioselectivities (up to 96%) under mild reaction conditions.

Abstract:Michael addition reaction of alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones and malononitrile that catalyzed by amine functionalized MCM-41 in methanol afforded a series of cyano derivatives with high yield (up to 99%). The products were afforded at room temperature. Moreover, the catalyst was also found to easiness to handle up, friendly environment, and excellent recyclability.

Abstract:Controllable synthesis of organic–inorganic hybrid materials with functional sites and tunable structures is of great significance. Herein, novel melamine-based G n -Dendron-OMS (G represents Generation; n = 1, 2, 3; Dendron = DMEDA, PIP, AMP, TMDP; OMS = FDU-12, MCM-41, SBA-15, KIT-6) hybrids with various terminal diamine groups, Dendron generations and ordered mesoporous silica hosts were synthesized, characterized and used to catalyze the nitroaldol (Henry) reaction. Among these hybrids, G 1 -DMEDA-FDU-12 shows outstanding catalytic performance with 4-nitrobenzaldehyde conversion of 96 %, β-nitroalcohol selectivity of 94 % and TOF of 20.4 h −1 under mild and solvent-free conditions. HMDS and HCl intervening active-site deactivation, in situ Raman spectra, Mulliken charge distribution and DFT calculations suggest that the triazine N atom (N T ) in the Dendron chain functions as the active site, the dehydrogenation of nitromethane is the rate determining step (RDS) and the Gibbs free energy change of the RDS on the triazine N atom decreased to as low as 30.2 kcal mol −1 . The formation of the deuterated β-nitroalcohol (R-OD) detected by FTIR and NMR indicates that nitroaldol (Henry) reaction undergoes an ion-pair mechanism. This work for the first time reveals the triazine-based active site for the nitroaldol (Henry) reaction and highlights a novel strategy to construct uniform, functional and tunable active sites for potential applications in catalysis, CO 2 capture and pollutant removal.

Abstract:Four amine functionalized mesoporous catalysts were synthesized by grafting primary, dualistic and two secondary amines onto the channel walls of mesoporous silica, MCM-41. We examined the effects of organoamine loading amount on the acid-base synergism of the catalysts in the self-condensation reaction of n-butanal, a Knoevenagel condensation and a Henry reaction. We observed the balance of the amine and residual silanol amounts is crucial to the catalytic performances of the functionalized mesoporous catalysts. An optimum organoamine loading amount exists, which is dependent on the organoamine type. There is little difference in the optimum organoamine loading amount between different reactions. The secondary organoamine functionalized MCM-41 exhibits the best catalytic performance in the experimental range.

Abstract:MCM-41-supported metal bis[(perfluoroalkyl)sulfonyl]imides were synthesized and characterized by FTIR, pyridine-FTIR, XRD, SEM, TG-DTA and N2-adsorption techniques. The heterogeneous catalysts were employed for nitration of aromatic compounds with 1eq. of 65wt% nitric acid in the liquid phase. The results showed that MCM-41-supported metal bis[(perfluoroalkyl)sulfonyl]imides were highly effective and could be recycled at least five times without substantial loss of catalytic activity.

Abstract:Nitroso compounds have two reactive nitrogen and oxygen atoms. It is interesting and important to perform a nitrogen or oxygen selective reaction with interesting substrates. These atom specific reactions are crucial to specifically synthesis of specific compounds. An enantioselective N-specific reaction of nitrosobenzene with unmodified aldehydes was successfully achieved catalyzed first by a variety of primary amine-based organocatalysts with higher yield and enantioselectivity. The bulkier substituted groups of the organocatalyst and two hydrogen bonds from the organocatalyst and the oxygen atom of nitrosobenzene make the reaction preferentially N-specific and predominantly afford R products. Abstract:A small library of C(1)-symmetric chiral diamines (L1-L9) was constructed via condensing exo-(-)-bornylamine or (+)-(1S,2S,5R)-menthylamine with various Cbz-protected amino acids. Among them, ligand L1/CuCl(2)·2H(2)O complex (2.5 mol %) shows outstanding catalytic efficiency for Henry reaction between a variety of aldehydes and nitroalkanes to afford the expected products in high yields (up to 98%) with excellent enantioselectivities (up to 99%) and moderate to good diastereoselectivities (up to 90:10). This process is air- and moisture tolerant and has been applied to the synthesis of (S)-2-amino-1-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)ethanol (9), a key intermediate for (S)-epinephrine and (S)-norepinephrine. On the basis of HRMS and X-ray diffraction analysis of the L1/CuCl(2) complex, a transition-state model was proposed to explain the origin of asymmetric induction. The low catalyst loading, excellent yields and enantioselectivities, inexpensive copper salt, and mild reaction conditions make our catalytic system to be practically useful.

Abstract:An efficient, environmentally friendly procedure is developed for the condensation of aldehydes/ketones and activated methylene compounds by using an aminopropyl-functionalized MCM-41 catalyst in aqueous solution. Different aldehydes/ketones and activated methylene compounds gave the corresponding alkenes in 78-97% isolated yields in mild reaction conditions. In comparison with organic solution, the aqueous solution gives higher yields in the same reaction conditions. Further more, the aminopropyl-functionalized MCM-41 in aqueous system can be reused for 8 times without significant decrease of activity.

Abstract:Primary amines derived from natural cinchona alkaloids are demonstrated to be excellent catalysts for a number of asymmetric reactions of carbonyl compounds. In comparison with chiral secondary amines, these primary amines exhibit Superior catalytic efficacy in the Michael addition and cycloaddition reactions of alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones, and high stereoselectivities have been generally achieved. Additionally, they can also be effectively applied in the enamine catalysis of carbonyl compounds, even in the reactions of rarely used aryl ketones.

Abstract:The Aldol reaction is recognized as one of the most powerful methods for the formation of carbon-carbon bonds in modern organic synthesis.[1] It provides an efficient approach to synthesis β-hydroxy carbonyl compounds,at the same time,producing two new stereocenters.Since the first intermolecule proline-catalyzed direct aldol reaction was described by List and co-workers in 2000,[2] organocatalytic stereoselective methods for asymmetric direct aldol reactions have obtained intensive research.Here we synthesized a new class of chiral bifunctional primary amines which could catalyze direct aldol reaction of cyclohexanone and p-nitrobenzaldehyde in the presence of 10 mol % of catalyst1,5 mol % of 2-naphthol as cocatalyst and iso-propanol as solvent,affording the products with moderate to high yield,enantioselectivity and diastereoselectivity(up to 98% yield,84 %ee.,82: 18dr).The mechanism of reaction is still on-going.

Abstract:A heterogeneous Ni catalyst was discovered to be active in the synthesis of secondary cross-imines via hydrogenative coupling of nitriles and amines. The mesoporous Al2O3-supported Ni nanoparticles (abbreviated as Ni/m-Al2O3-600, where 600 represents the reduction temperature) were active in hydrogenative coupling of nitriles and amines reaction at 80 degrees C and 1 bar H-2, affording corresponding cross-imines with yields in the range 64.1-98.1%. Density functional theory calculations reveal the hydrogenation of benzonitrile (PhCN) to benzylamine (PhCH2NH2) has higher activation energy than that for hydrogenative cross-coupling of PhCN and RNH2 on the Ni/m-Al2O3-600 catalyst, suggesting the latter reaction is more favorable. The theoretical calculations are in good agreement with our experimental results.

Abstract:The application potential of primary amine catalysts in the context of Mannich reactions of aldehydes with ketimines is exemplified by isatin-derived ketimines and cyclic trifluoromethyl ketimines. Primary amine catalysts exhibit either unusual stereoselectivity or reactivity, which is not observable with secondary amine catalysts. Moreover, reversal of diastereofacial selectivity between primary and secondary amine catalysts is disclosed. These new reactions provide useful methods for the syntheses of chiral 3-substituted 3-amino-2-oxindoles and dihydroquinazolinones bearing a trifluoromethylated quaternary stereocenter. The synthetic utility of the reactions is demonstrated through the formal synthesis of AG-041R and DPC 083 and the total synthesis of (-)-psychotriasine.

Abstract:A novel tandem strategy for coupling of either methylamine or nitroalkane with aldehyde has been developed. This is the first demonstration that methylamine or nitroalkane is used as a methylation reagent, fabricating N-alkyl amines. The active Pt NWs allow for the selective preparation of a series of N-alkyl amines with good to excellent yields under mild and environmentally friendly conditions.

Abstract:Several novel prolylprolinol catalysts have been designed and synthesized. This type of compound showed high catalytic efficiency on promoting the direct addition of unmodified aldehydes to nitroalkenes. Among the catalysts surveyed, the least bulky member ( 8d ) exhibited the best performance on both efficiency and stereoselectivity, providing the products with up to 97% ee value with 1.5–5 mol% catalyst loading. Additionally, computational studies of the transition state have been conducted to explain the high diastereo‐ and enantioselectivity.
