Abstract:Semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (s-SWNTs) with diameters of 1.0-1.5 nm (with similar bandgap to crystalline silicon) are highly desired for nano electronics. Up to date, the highest reported content of s-SWNTs as-grown is similar to 97%, which is still far below the daunting requirements of high-end applications. Herein, we report a feasible and green pathway to use H2O vapor to modulate the structure of the intermetallic W6Co7 nanocrystals. By using the resultant W6Co7 nanocatalysts with a high percentage of (1 0 10) planes as structural templates, we realized the direct growth of s-SWNT with the purity of similar to 99%, in which similar to 97% is (14,4) tubes (diameter 1.29 nm). H2O can also act as an environmentally friendly and facile etchant for eliminating metallic SWNTs, and the content of s-SWNTs was further improved to 99.8% and (14,4) tubes to 98.6%. High purity s-SWNTs with even bandgap determined by their uniform structure can be used for the exquisite applications in different fields.
Supramolecular Modification of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes with a Water-Soluble Triptycene Derivative

Abstract:Supramolecular surface modification of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) using an amphiphilic molecule containing a bent triptycene moiety and a hydrophilic oligo(ethylene glycol) chain is described. The surface modification was realized through the binding of the triptycene moiety onto the sidewall of SWCNTs through a π–π stacking interaction, and the oligo(ethylene glycol) chains extend into the water and act as dispersing agents, thus yielding an aqueous SWCNT dispersion. This dispersion is stable for more than six months and contains a high concentration of SWCNTs. The dispersion was characterized by absorption, fluorescence, and Raman spectroscopy. Based on shape-fitting of SWCNTs and the triptycene moiety, the stacking of triptycene moieties on the SWCNT sidewall shows a nice selectivity for SWCNTs with a diameter of 1.0 nm.

Abstract:Polystyrene functionalized SWCNTs, prepared by copper(I) catalyzed click coupling of alkyne-decorated SWCNTs with well-defined, azide-terminated polystyrene, were transformed to water-soluble structures through sulfonation of the grafted polystyrene chains. The degree of polystyrene sulfonation was varied from 20 to 34mol%, and was found to be directly proportional to the aqueous solubility of the material. The resulting sulfonated polystyrene-functionalized SWCNTs (SPS-SWCNTs) were found to be pH responsive, forming homogeneous solutions in water at pH values between 3 and 13. Outside of this pH range, the SPS-SWCNTs rapidly precipitate from solution. In addition, it was found that nanotube aggregation could be significantly reduced at high pH, where the sulfonate groups led to electrostatic repulsion between nanotubes.

Abstract:Utilization of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) in high-end applications hinges on separating metallic (met-) from semiconducting (sem-) SWNTs. Surfactant amines, like octadecylamine (ODA) have proven instrumental for the selective extraction of sem-SWNTs from tetrahydrofuran (THF) nanotube suspensions. The chemical shift differences along the tail of an asymmetric, diacetylenic surfactant amine were used to probe the molecular dynamics in the presence and absence of nanotubes via NMR. The results suggest that the surfactant amine head is firmly immobilized onto the nanotube surface together with acidic water, while the aliphatic tail progressively gains larger mobility as it gets farther from the SWNT. X-ray and high-resolution TEM studies indicate that the sem-enriched sample is populated mainly by small nanotube bundles containing ca. three SWNTs. Molecular simulations in conjunction with previously determined HNO(3)/H(2)SO(4) oxidation depths for met- and sem-SWNTs indicate that the strong pinning of the amine surfactants on the sem-enriched SWNTs bundles is a result of a well-ordered arrangement of nitrate/amine salts separated with a monomolecular layer of H(2)O. Such continuous 2D arrangement of nitrate/amine salts shields the local environment adjacent to sem-enriched SWNTs bundles and maintains an acidic pH that preserves nanotube oxidation (i.e., SWNT(n+)). This, in turn, results in strong interactions with charge-balancing NO(3)(-) counterions that through their association with neutralized surfactant amines provide effective THF dispersion and consequent sem enrichment.

Abstract:A thiol-functionalized poly (phenylacetylene) has been synthesized and characterized. The disappearance of the characteristic vibrations at 3312 and 776 cm(-1) (C=C-H) and 2106 cm(-1) (C=C), together with the vanishing of the chemical shifts at 3.0 (C=C-H) and the appearance of the chemical shifts at 6.4 (C=C-H) indicate the polymerization of the thiol-containing monomer. The hybrid of thiol-functionalized poly(phenylacetylene) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) showed good solubility in organic solvents. Meanwhile,the wrapping of the polymer chains on MWNTs led to the surface functionalization. By aid of the interactions between thiol groups and zinc cations, ZnO nanoparticles were assembled onto out-shells of the hybrids. These results suggested a novel route to the fabrication of multi-component nanostructures.

Abstract:A facile polyol approach has been developed for large-scale synthesis of water-soluble Na2SiF6 nanotubes and nanospindles in a controlled manner with polyacrylic acid (PAA) as a surfactant. We found that the concentration of PAA plays a critical role in controlling the morphology of the Na2SiF6 nanostructures because this parameter determines the shape of PAA micelles formed in aqueous solution. As expected, the Na2SiF6 nanotubes and nanospindles exhibit wide applications as a template for synthesis of other nanostructures owing to their water-soluble properties.

Abstract:Treating single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) with sec-butyllithium and subsequently with carbon dioxide leads to the SWNTs functionalized with both alkyl and carboxyl groups (named as c-a-SWNTs for simplicity). The resultant c-a-SWNTs are largely with lengths between 100 and 200 nm, which can be individually dispersed in water at the concentration of 0.5 mg/mL and the solution is nearly transparent. Zeta potentiometric titration indicates that c-a-SWNTs have a feature similar to a zwitterionic polyelectrolyte.

Abstract:We report the efficient aqueous dispersion of pristine HiPco single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) with ionic liquid (IL)-based surfactants 1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide (1) and 1-(12-mercaptododecyl)-3-methylimidazolium bromide (2), the thiolation of nanotube sidewalls with 2, and the controlled self-assembly of positively charged SWNT-1,2 composites on gold. Optical absorption spectra and resonance Raman (RR) data of obtained aqueous SWNT-1,2 dispersions are consistent with debundled and noncovalently functionalized nanotubes whose electronic properties have not been disturbed. Additionally, the dispersion of pristine nanotube material with surfactants 1 and 2 leads to a high degree of purification from carbonaceous particles. The chiralities of the 14 smallest semiconducting HiPco SWNTs in resonance with Raman excitation at 1064 nm (1.165 eV) were determined in SWNT-2 aqueous dispersion using UV-vis-NIR and RR spectra. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and surface-enhanced resonance Raman scattering (SERRS) spectroscopy of SWNT-2 submonolayers on gold verified the encapsulation of individualized SWNTs with IL surfactants, the cleavage of S-S disulfide bonds formed in aqueous SWNT-2 suspensions, and the direct chemisorption of the SWNT-2 composite on bare gold via the Au-S bond. Aqueous dispersions of SWNTs with IL-based surfactants add biofunctionality to carbon nanotubes by imparting the positive surface charge necessary for interactions with cell membranes. Our technique, which purifies pristine nanotube material and produces water-soluble, positively charged nanotubes with pendent surface-active thiol groups, may also be translated to other carbon nanotubes and carbon nanostructures. Self-assembled, positively charged submonolayers of SWNTs can be further used for applications in cell biology and sensor technology.

Abstract:Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were functionalized by means of a series of aromatic and heterocyclic amines (4-anisidine, 5-aminobenzene-1,3-dicarboxylic acid (5-aminoisophthalic acid), 1,3-dimethyl-5-aminobenzene-1,3-dicarboxylate, dimethyl 5-aminoisophthalate, 4-aminopyridine, 2-aminothiazole, 4-sulfanilamide) by two methods: acidic treatment and molten urea-assisted synthesis. The reactions products were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. The dispersion ability of several solvents (acetone, water, dimethylformamide, ethanol, toluene, and ethylene glycol) to “dissolve” the functionalized SWCNTs was determined for each product. The dispersion ability of the used solvents with respect to the functionalized SWCNTs was found to be considerably dependent on the nature of the solvent (in particular, its polarity), the organic compound used as the functionalizing agent, and, in a lesser account, on the functionalization method followed.

Abstract:Well-defined fibers and films of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) with high purity and narrow diameter distributions were obtained from the strand-like raw soot produced by a dc arc-discharge method. These architectures made up of SWNTs have very uniform smooth surfaces. When the strand-like product was placed on a silicon substrate, dipped into water, treated ultrasonically, and then dried in air, another interesting architecture, an SWNT ball, was obtained. This ball-like structure could also be found on the surface of purified SWNTs. We propose that the surface tension of water and the interaction between SWNTs and silica sphere played the key role in the ball (SWNTs outside and silica sphere inside) formation process.

Abstract:This study includes of syntheses and characteristics functionalized single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with amide group using thionyl chloride and NH3. First SWCNTs in H2SO4 and HNO3, solved and the solution obtained ultrasound was to reach the equilibrium temperature to functionalization of carboxylate single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT-COOH). Then using thionyl chloride with (SOCl2) and DMF the mixture was refluxing. SWCNT-COCl was obtained from the previous step with ammonia (NH3), and DMF as solvent, and the mixture was refluxing. The black solid obtained was placed overnight in the oven to dry. Carbon nanotubes were expected at this stage to have a functional group CONH2. All new chemical bonding products were identified by FT-IR and observations using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were confirmed. SWCNT-COOH functionalized carbon nanotubes have a relatively smooth surface and thin Stowe and the SEM image of the SWCNT-NH2; a thin layer of hope is clearly placed on the surface of SWCNT-COOH and its diameter is increased.

Abstract:A kind of novel surfactant with star-like molecular structure and terminated sulfonate was synthesized, and it was used as the dispersant for multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in aqueous suspensions compared with a traditional single-chained surfactant. The star-like surfactant showed good dispersing ability for multi-walled CNTs in aqueous suspensions. Surface tension analysis, total organic carbon analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, zeta potential, dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy were performed to research the effect of star-like surfactant on the dispersion of multi-walled CNTs in aqueous suspensions. With the assistance of star-like surfactant, the CNTs could disperse well in aqueous suspension at high concentration of 50 g/L for more than 30 days, while the CNTs precipitated completely in aqueous suspension after 1 day without any dispersant or after 10 days with sodium 4-dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid as dispersant. Abstract:A green approach has been developed to synthesize water soluble multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs). Ag nanoparticles have been loaded on the as-synthesized MWNTs via the in situ solution method. The strategy is based on the introduction of hydroxyl and carboxyl groups through a mild modification of MWNTs via polycondensation of citric acid and D-sorbitol, improving the water solubility of MWNTs, giving rise to preferred sites of Ag nucleation, and providing mild in situ reducing agents. The modification of MWNTs and loading of Ag nanoparticles on MWNTs were demonstrated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, transmission electron microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy.
Using Nonionic Surfactants for Production of Semiconductor-Type Carbon Nanotubes by Gel-Based Affinity Chromatography

Abstract:Single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) have remarkable properties based on their electronic properties, i.e., metallic or semiconducting types, but as-grown SWCNTs contain a mixture of both types. Presented here is an improved and detailed method for producing highly enriched semiconducting SWCNTs from a colloidal suspension of as-grown SWCNTs through agarose gel column-based affinity chromatography. After a 2 wt% sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) aqueous dispersion of SWCNTs is passed through the gel column, metal-type SWCNTs preferentially elute out using a 1.5 wt% SDS solution. Semiconductor-type SWCNTs are subsequently recovered from the column using a 2 wt% Pluronic F77 surfactant solution eluent. The semiconductor-enriched fraction purity is in the 90–95% range, based on detailed UV-vis-NIR absorption and resonant Raman spectroscopy characterization of the particulate suspension. Semiconductor-type SWCNTs are recovered in solid form by evaporating the suspension fluid, and heating the dried sample in air to a temperature just above the Pluronic decomposition temperature. Using Pluronic and other nonionic-type surfactants can aid the scalability of the chromatographic production of semiconducting SWCNT samples.

Abstract:Water-soluble multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) with a high solubility of 29.2 mg ml(-1) were obtained by polymer dispersant hydrolyzed poly(styrene-co-maleic anhydride) (HSMA) assisted exfoliation and centrifugation. The MWNTs were exfoliated and dispersed in aqueous solution by non-covalent modification with polymer dispersant of HSMA. Characterizations of HSMA-coated MWNTs were conducted via transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV -vis and fluorescence spectroscopy, and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). The as-prepared HSMA-coated MWNTs showed good dispersibility and stability in water.

Abstract:Single crystalline SnS nanowires with an average diameter of 30 nm and lengths of up to hundreds of micrometers were synthesized by using cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), together with SnCl2, oxalic acid (H2C2O4), and sodium sulfide (Na2S). The crystallity, purity, morphology, and structure features of the-prepared SnS nanowires were investigated by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Raman spectrum.

Abstract:In this study, we report the observation of dissolution of unmodified full-length CNTs using liquid state alkane at elevated temperatures. The dissolved CNTs were examined by UV-vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy, and SEM methods. The results obtained support the existence of the CNT component in the solution. Furthermore, a condensed ultra-thin film of carbon nanotubes, which were not treated by ultrasonic agitation and acid to avoid damaging the nanotubes, was fabricated on a pure water subphase. The film is stable at least up to 60 mN m(-1). The TEM images on the film show that individual carbon nanotubes and carbon nanotube bundles are indeed present in the film.

Abstract:Molecular dynamics simulations of a nonpolar single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) solvated in aqueous solutions of urea, methanol, and trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) show clearly the effects of cosolvents on the hydration of the interior of the SWNT. The size of the SWNT was chosen to be small enough that water but not the cosolvent molecules can penetrate into its interior. Urea as a protein denaturant improves hydration of the interior of the SWNT, while the protein protectant TMAO dehydrates the SWNT. The interior of the SWNT is also dehydrated when methanol is added to the solution. The analysis of interaction energies of the water confined inside the SWNT pore shows that the stability of the confined water in the methanol and TMAO solutions mainly depends on electrostatic interactions. In contrast, both van der Waals and electrostatic interactions were shown to be important in stabilizing the confined water when the SWNT is immersed in the urea solution.

Abstract:Understanding the interaction nature between dispersants and single-walled nanotubes (SWNTs) is crucial for separating SWNTs. In this work, it was found that amide groups of the amino acid surfactant N-cocoyl sarcosinate (N-CS) molecules could be anchored on SWNTs by a pi-pi-stacking interaction, offering the opportunity for alkyl chains to closely adsorb on SWNTs under an hydrophobic effect, with the winding directions found to be adjusted to match the chiral angles of SWNTs, which made N-CS molecules not only uniformly wrap around SWNTs but also recognize the chiral angle of SWNTs, guaranteeing the effective individualization and the multiple separation of SWNTs. Resorting to the scalable technique of density gradient ultracentrifugation, the mixture of SWNTs was first separated by diameter because the amount of N-CS adsorbed on SWNTs is proportional to the surface area of SWNTs. Afterward, when sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) was added as the cosurfactant, a different number of SDS molecules were inserted into the SWNT/N-CS assemblies to enhance the density difference among SWNTs with different chiral angles, ensuring the separation of SWNTs by chiral angles. On the basis of the recognition of SWNTs by dispersants, the difference among SWNTs could be effectively established, providing a precondition for the accurate separation of SWNTs.
