Abstract:In a preliminary letter (Tetrahedron Lett. 2010, 51, 188), we reported two new hydrazide-based quadruple hydrogen-bonding motifs, this is, two monopodal (la and 1b) and five dipodal (2a, 2b and 3a-3c) aromatic hydrazide derivatives, and the formation of supramolecular polymers and vesicles from the dipodal motifs in hydrocarbons. In this paper, we present a full picture on the properties of these hydrogen-bonding motifs with an emphasis on their self-assembling behaviors in aqueous media. SEM, AFM, TEM and fluorescent micrographs indicate that all the dipodal compounds also form vesicles in polar methanol and water-methanol (up to 50% of water) mixtures. Control experiments show that 1b does not form vesicles in same media. Addition of 1b to the solution of the dipodal compounds inhibits the latter's capacity of forming vesicles. At high concentrations, 3b and 3c also gelate discrete solvents, including hydrocarbons, esters, methanol, and methanol-water mixture. Concentration-dependent SEM investigations reveal that the vesicles of 3b and 3c fuse to form gels and the gel of 3c can de-aggregate to form the vesicles reversibly.
Self-Assembly-Induced Supramolecular Hexagonal Columnar Liquid Crystalline Phase Using Laterally Attached Nonmesogenic Templates

Abstract:A novel poly[di(4-heptyl) vinylterephthalate] has been synthesized based upon a free radical polymerization from a newly designed monomer having a nonmesogenic template with two double-swallow-tailed I-heptyl (Y-shaped) groups. The resulting polymer consists of a polyethylene backbone and a 2,5bis-(4-heptyloxycarbonyl)phenyl lateral substitutent on every second carbon atom of the backbone. Although neither the backbone nor the pendent template exhibits liquid crystalline (LC) behavior, they couple together to form a supramolecular hexagonal columnar LC phase on a scale of greater than 1.5 nm in the polymer. Therefore, it is deduced that this supramolecular LC structure is constructed via a cooperative assembly of a helical arrangement of the backbones with the pendent templates.

Abstract:In an attempt to construct mesogen-jacketed liquid crystalline polymers through noncovalent interactions, poly(2-vinylbenzene-1,4-dioic acid) and five series of pyridine derivatives were synthesized as hydrogen-bonding donor and acceptors, respectively. The structures of the compounds were confirmed by H-1 NMR, FT-IR, and gel permeation chromatography. A series of complexes with the same degree of polymerization and polydispersity were obtained by mixing the hydrogen-bonding donor and acceptors. The hydrogen-bonds were confirmed by FT-IR spectra. We found that the rigidity and structures of pyridine derivatives and the strength of the hydrogen-bonding all influenced the liquid crystalline behaviors of the resulting complexes. Smectic A and columnar nematic phases were observed in complexes PPANCx and PPANNEC, respectively.

Abstract:With a pyridine derivative containing a calamitic mesogen 4-((6-((4'-((4-hexylphenyl)ethynyl)-[1,1′-biphenyl]-4-yl)oxy)hexyl)oxy)pyridine (HEBC6) used as the hydrogen-bonding acceptor and polydimethylsiloxane-b-poly(2,5-bis(4-carboxy phenyl)styrene) (PDMS-b-PM3H) as the hydrogen-bonding donor, a series of supramolecular liquid crystalline block copolymers (SLCBCPs) were prepared through hydrogen bonding. In the supramolecular block, the calamitic mesogen was decoupled from the motion of PM3H chains by using a flexible spacer. Different microphase-separated nanostructures and liquid crystalline (LC) structures were obtained by varying the degree of polymerization of the PM3H block and the molar ratio of HEBC6 to PDMS-b-PM3H. The SLCBCPs can self-assemble into hexagonally packed cylinders (HEX), lamellae (LAM), and inverted HEX. Smectic A phase and parallel packing of the calamitic mesogens were also observed on a smaller length scale, and these two ordered structures are synergistic and promotional. Therefore, hierarchically ordered structures can be obtained from these SLCBCPs.

Abstract:In a liquid crystal (LC) state, specific orientations and alignments of LC molecules produce outstanding anisotropy in structure and properties, followed by diverse optoelectronic functions. Besides organic LC molecules, other nonclassical components, including inorganic nanomaterials, are capable of self-assembling into oriented supramolecular LC mesophases by non-covalent interactions. Particularly, huge differences in size, shape, structure and properties within these components gives LC supramolecules higher anisotropy and feasibility. Therefore, hydrogen bonds have been viewed as the best and the most common option for supramolecular LCs, owing to their high selectivity and directionality. In this review, we summarize the newest advances in self-assembled structure, stimulus-responsive capability and application of supramolecular hydrogen-bonded LC nanosystems, to provide novel and immense potential for advancing LC technology.

Abstract:Two series of hydrogen-bonded liquid crystal complexes have been obtained from binary mixtures of 4, 4′-bipyridine and 2-fluoro-6-X-4-alkoxybenzoic acids (where X = H or F) with a molar ratio of 2:1. The fluorinated proton donors were synthesized firstly and then their chemical structures measured by EA, FTIR, 1H NMR and 13C NMR. The existences of hydrogen bonds between the proton donors and acceptors were identified by FTIR. The liquid crystalline properties of these complexes were investigated by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), polarizing optical microscopy (POM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results indicated that these complexes with different alkoxy chains and numbers of lateral fluorine atoms exhibited different phase properties. Especially, when the alkoxy chains were short enough, the mesophase of the complexes disappeared.

Abstract:Three series of cholesteryl-containing supramolecular hydrogen-bonded (H-bonded) liquid crystal (LC) complexes with different number of fluoro-substituent were synthesised and characterised. Cholesteryl isonicotinate as proton acceptor and 4-n-alkoxybenzoic acids with or without fluoro-substituent as proton donor had been mixed in tetrahydrofuran to obtain H-bonded LC complexes. The effect of lateral substitution and the length of terminal chain in the H-bonded precursors on the formation of the supramolecular complexes had been examined. It was found that the introduction of fluoro substituent on the induced mesogens could widen the molecular width and thus reduce the molecular aspect ratio of the complexes, therefore it could lead to compress the formation of the LCs. However, the fluoro substituent played a positive role in enhancing the intermolecular interactions and stabilising the H-bond structure of the complexes. The influence of terminal length on the mesogenic behaviours is also discussed. On increasing the spacer length, the clear point and the thermal range of induced mesophase-like cholesteric phase decreased, and an induced chiral smectic phase began to appear in some complexes with long terminal tails.

Abstract:Photo-switchable materials with liquid crystalline (LC) properties and being capable of showing mirror-symmetry breaking are of special interest from a fundamental scientific point of view as well as for the development of π-conjugated materials with tailored superstructures for optical, emissive and photonic materials. Herein we report two new series of supramolecular photosensitive polycatenar (multi-chained) mesogens formed by hydrogen bonding interaction between a taper shaped triple-chain benzoic acid as the hydrogen bond-donor and fluorinated azopyridines with only a single chain as hydrogen bond-acceptors. The self-assembly of these materials was characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized optical microscopy (POM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Depending on the position of the fluorine atom different types of LC phases were observed, including spontaneously chiral isotropic liquid (Iso1[*]) and bicontinous cubic phases (Cubbi[⁎]/I23), as well as achiral cubic (Cubbi/Ia3̄d) and non-cubic 3D phases with tetragonal symmetry. This report provides guidelines for the application of core fluorination at different positions as a powerful tool for controlling spontaneous helical self-assembly in supramolecular liquid and liquid crystalline materials.

Abstract:Supramolecular gels and liquid crystals are two important organic soft materials in self-assembly systems. A series of new low-molecular-weight organic gels was synthesized by connecting two cholesterol molecules and two hydrophobic chains incorporating amide groups to a central tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) moiety (1a-l). Compounds 1a-l and their corresponding charge transfer complexes easily formed a stable supramolecular gel in various organic solvents and their self-assembly morphologies and structures were investigated. It was revealed that hydrogen bonding and van der Waals interaction played important roles in the gelation process. More importantly, nearly half of the gelators exhibited liquid crystalline phases of type smectic A in a particular temperature region; there was no crystallization but there was vitrifying to form glassy mesogens during cooling from the isotropic melt. The effects of the linker chain length and terminal alkoxy chain on liquid crystals were studied. The liquid crystalline organogelator with TTF unit was first designed and synthesized. It was demonstrated that the gelators obtained from cyclohexane had a strong ability to adsorb the toxic dye Rhodamine B from water. This property of this series of compounds is considered to have potential utilization for the removal of toxic dye molecules from wastewater.

Design, Synthesis, and Self-assembly of Mesogen-Jacketed Liquid Crystalline Polymers Constructed by Hydrogen Bonding

Abstract:A new type of supramolecular mesogen-jacketed liquid crystalline polymer (MJLCP) was constructed by hydrogen bonding with poly(4-vinyl pyridine) (P4VP) as the hydrogen-bonding acceptor and carboxyl-containing molecules as hydrogen-bonding donors. The formation of hydrogen bonds was proven by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and wide-angle X-ray scattering, and the effect of molecular structures on the phase behaviors of supramolecular MJLCPs was systematically studied. The results showed that because the "jacketing" effect of hydrogen-bonding donor molecules with only one (8MP) and three benzene rings (4TP and 6TP) and relatively short alkyl-chain tails was not strong enough when they were complexed with P4VP, the complexes P4VP(4TP)x, P4VP(6TP)x, and P4VP(8MP) x are disordered at a molar complexing ratio x (between the donor and the acceptor) of 1.0. The four types of complexes P4VP(8TP)x, P4VP(10TP)x, P4VP(12MP)x, and P4VP(16MP) x undergo a transition from an disordered structure to the smectic (Sm) phase when the complexing ratio increases, and the minimum ratio for the appearance of liquid crystalline phases gradually decreases when the length of alkyl-chain tails and the rigidity of the hydrogen-bonding donor increase. Because of the high rigidity of the hydrogen-bonding donor and its long alkyl-chain tails, the P4VP(12TP) x undergoes a phase transition from disordered to the Sm phase and then to a hexagonal columnar (Colh) phase with the increase in the complexing ratio. However, if the size of the hydrogen-bonding donor molecule is too large, the formation of hydrogen bonds would be hindered, and macroscopic phase separation occurs in P4VP(8PP)(x) even when the complexing ratio is very low. The use of hydrogen bonding greatly simplifies the construction of MJLCPs. The liquid crystalline phase can be flexibly regulated by controlling the structure of small molecules and the complexing ratio, which provides a new idea for the structural design of MJLCPs with complex structures. Self-assembly of Supramolecular Polymers in Water from Tetracationic and Tetraanionic Monomers in Water Through Cooperative Electrostatic Attraction and Aromatic Stacking

Abstract:The cooperative electrostatic attraction and pi-pi aromatic stacking interactions between tetrahedral tetrapyridinium TP and three tetraanionic tetraphenylethylene derivatives TPE-1 similar to 3 led to the formation of a new kind of supramolecular polymer networks in water, which have been confirmed by H-1 NMR, fluorescence, isothermal titration calorimetric (ITC) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) experiments. ITC studies show that the contributions of enthalpy and entropy were comparable, reflecting the importance of hydrophobicity in driving the intermolecular aromatic stacking. DLS experiments indicate that the linear supramolecular polymers formed by these tetratopic monomers further aggregated into networks of 10(2)-nm size. Abstract:By connecting a fluorinated molecule 2,5-bis((4-(perfluorohexyl)benzoyl)oxy)benzoic acid (6DFP) to the poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP) backbone through hydrogen bonding, we synthesized a new series of fluorinated supramolecular mesogen-jacketed liquid crystalline polymer (MJLCP) P4VP(6DFP)x, where x is the molar ratio of donor to acceptor. Polarized light microscopy and wide-angle X-ray scattering were used to investigate the liquid crystallinity of the resulting complexes. The results show that this kind of supramolecular MJLCP has good thermal stability, with the isotropization temperature of about 170 °C. Subsequently, by connecting the fluorinated molecule 6DFP to the commercially available coil−coil block copolymer (BCP) polystyrene-block-poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PS-b-P4VP) chain also via hydrogen bond, we constructed a series of supramolecular rod−coil BCP PSmVn(6DFP)x, where m and n are the degrees of polymerization of PS and P4VP, respectively. PSmVn(6DFP)x exhibits a hierarchically ordered self-assembled structure. Owing to the introduction of fluorine atoms, the Flory-Huggins interaction parameter (χ) of such a supramolecular BCP is high. BCP sample with a low total degree of polymerization can still be ordered, and the periodic size can be as low as 11.5 nm. This work provides a new approach for the construction of small-sized structures by supramolecular BCPs via hydrogen bonding, which can be used as nanotemplates and nanoporous materials after selective removal of the small molecules.
Effect of Bent-Shape and Calamitic-Shape of Hydrogen-Bonded Mesogens on the Liquid Crystalline Properties

Abstract:Six series of hydrogen-bonded (H-bonded) liquid crystals (LCs) were synthesised to study the effect of H-bonded mesogens with calamitic-shape or bent-shape structure on mesogenic behaviours by using isonicotinate and nicotinate derivatives as proton acceptors. The lateral fluoro-substituent and the length of the terminal chains were also studied in detail. When the structure of H-bonded LCs changed from calamitic-shape to bent-shape, the length to breadth ratio reduced greatly, which led to the temperature range of mesophases narrowed and a decrease in melting point and clear point. Although the introduction of fluorine substituent could reduce the length to breadth ratio and lead to the mesophase range narrowed, even disappeared, it could effectively inhibit the emergence of the smectic A phase and obviously enhance the strength of H-bond self-assembly. Additionally, it could help reduce the phase transition points to increase the length of terminal chains.
Intermolecular Halogen Bonding-Controlled Self-Assembly of Hydrogen Bonded Aromatic Amide Foldamers

Abstract:Six intramolecular hydrogen bonding-induced aromatic amide foldamers have been prepared through the formation of the hydrazone bond in the last step. The compounds are attached with one trifluoroiodobenzene as halogen donor and one pyridine ring as halogen bonding acceptor. Intermolecular I center dot center dot center dot N halogen bond formed by the above two units and other kinds of halogen bonds are designed to modulate the stacking of the compounds in the solid state. It is revealed that intermolecular halogen bonding can induce the molecules to form extended zigzag arrays, dimeric macrocycles or supramolecular helices. The formation of the dimeric macrocycles is favored when the halogen bond donor and acceptor are located in a parallel manner. Longer tetrameric and pentameric sequences give rise to more curved, crescent conformations, with the two halogen bonding donor and acceptor on the ends to form a large angle. For two compounds, polar methanol or water prevents the formation of the intermolecular end-to-end halogen bonding by forming I center dot center dot center dot O halogen bonding. The pentameric compound is connected by methanol to form supramolecular single helices. For another pentameric compound, strong I center dot center dot center dot O=C halogen bonding is found to induce the backbone to self-assemble into supramolecular single helices. The single helices further stack to afford supramolecular double helix arrays.

Abstract:New monomers, 2,5-(4-alkoxybenzoyl-oxy)benzyl acrylates were synthesized. Upon radical polymerizations of these monomers thermotropic liquid crystalline polyacrylates with mesogens laterally attached to polymer backbones via short linkages were obtained. The polymers were found non-crystalline by WAXS measurements. Above glass transition all the polymers had a stable mesophase as revealed by DSC and a polarizing microscope. The glass transition and the isotropization temperatures were about 100°C and about 165°C respectively, both varying with the size of the R substituents in the mesogens. The term “mesogen-jacketed polymer” is proposed to describe this type of polymers of which the main chains are jacketed with laterally substituted mesogens and to distinguish this new class of side chain liquid crystal polymers from the conventional ones.

Abstract:The conformation of a mesogen-jacketed liquid crystalline polymer (MJLCP) chain can be a supramolecular rod or sheet. Therefore, MJLCPs can serve as supramolecular mesogens to form various liquid crystalline (LC) phases, such as hexagonal columnar, columnar nematic, hexatic columnar nematic, and smectic phases. By introducing nanobuilding blocks such as one-dimensional biphenyl, two-dimensional triphenylene and three-dimensional polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) into MJLCPs, the resultant polymers can self-assemble into hierarchical structures on the sub-10 nm and close-to-1 nm length scales, as proven by a combination of experimental techniques including differential scanning calorimetry, polarized light microscopy, wide-angle and small-angle X-ray scattering, and transmission electron microscopy. In general, polymers form hierarchical structures at low temperatures. With increasing temperature, the ordered structure of the nanobuilding blocks in the side chain becomes disordered first. When the temperature is further elevated, the nano-sized LC phase of the polymer as a whole will transform to another structure or become isotropic. For some polymers, a re-entrant isotropic phase exists at intermediate temperatures. Because the hierarchical structures of these polymers have the advantages of controllable sizes and monodispersity and LC polymers are capable of being aligned by external fields and forming large-scale ordered domains, such polymers have wide potential applications in organic opto-electronics, nanoporous membranes, nanolithography, and so on. This paper reviews research works on the design, synthesis, and hierarchical self-assembly of MJLCP-based homopolymers containing biphenyl, azobenzene, calamitic multi-benzene structure, triphenylene, and POSS units in the side chains.
Synthesis of Lamellar Mesostructures with Nonamphiphilic Mesogens As Templates

Abstract:Magnesium- and zinc-based lamellar mesostructures were synthesized with nonamphiphilic mesogens as templates. The templates used were disodium chromoglycate (DSCG) and flufenamic acid (FA) which are known to exhibit lyotropic liquid-crystalline phases in aqueous solutions. Evidence for the lamellar structure was obtained from the X-ray diffraction patterns and transmission electron micrographs. The interlayer spacings in the materials prepared with DSCG and FA, 30 and 24 Angstrom, respectively, were large compared to the molecular dimensions of the templates, suggesting the existence of a bilayer arrangement of the templates between the inorganic walls. The presence of intact template molecules within the layers was confirmed by chemical analysis, TGA, IR, and NMR measurements. Interactions between the template molecules and the inorganic layer were evident through the increase in their decomposition temperatures as compared to the pure template and by the slight weakening of the C=O bond as determined by the IR measurements. The synthesis of lamellar mesostructures with nonamphiphilic mesogens broadens the scope of the so-called ''liquid-crystal template mechanism'' in the sense that it is not limited to amphiphilic molecules but applies also to other molecules which can form large molecular assemblies in solutions.
Multiple non-covalent-interaction-directed supramolecular double helices: the orthogonality of hydrogen, halogen and chalcogen bonding

Abstract:In this study, a benzoselenadiazole- and pyridine-bifunctionalized hydrogen-bonded arylamide foldamer was synthesized. A co-crystallization experiment with 1,4-diiodotetrafluorobenzene showed that a new type of supramolecular double helices, which were induced by three orthogonal interactions, namely, three-center hydrogen bonding (O⋯H⋯O), I⋯N halogen bonding and Se⋯N chalcogen bonding, have been constructed in the solid state. This work presents a novel instance of multiple non-covalent interactions that work together to construct supramolecular architectures.

Amphiphilic mesogen-jacketed liquid crystalline polymers: Design, synthesis, and self-assembly behaviors

Abstract:We synthesized a series of amphiphilic mesogen-jacketed liquid crystalline (LC) polymers with a biphenyl side-chain mesogen containing a carboxylic acid group on one side and an octyloxy group on the other, and the number of methylene units between the biphenyl core and the exterior carboxylic acid group was varied to adjust the mesophases and the amphiphilic nature. The polymers were obtained through conventional radical polymerizations and characterized by a combination of different techniques such as thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, polarized light microscopy, and X-ray scattering. The results revealed that the polymer without any methylene spacer, POBP-0C, did not exhibit LC properties while POBP-1C (n = 1) and POBP-7C (n = 7) formed double layer smectic A (SA) phases. The hydrogen bonding among the carboxylic acid groups and the segregation between the carboxylic acid groups and the alky chains played important roles in forming the mesophases. In addition, the solution self-assembly behaviors were also preliminarily investigated through the fluorescent probe technique and transmission electron microscopy, and vesicles with uniform sizes were observed. The weak hydrophilicity and large degree of freedom of the carboxylic acid group and the relative rigidity of the polymer chain due to the jacketing effect were responsible for the formation of the structures. Liquid crystal gelators based on tetrathiafulvalene supramolecular assemblies: Synthesis, characterization and potential application

Abstract:We synthesized a series of novel liquid crystal (LC) gelators by attaching two cholesterol groups through two ω-thioalkanoyloxy spacers of varying length to thia-crown-annulated tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) moieties ( 1a – e ). Among these compounds, 1b and 1d underwent gelation to form stable supramolecular gels in various organic solvents, and their self-assembled morphology and structure indicated that Van der Waals interactions were the driving force of gel formation. In addition, more than half of the gels ( 1a – d ) transformed into nematic LCs in a certain temperature range, while gelators that did not crystallize during cooling from the isotropic melt formed glassy mesogens. Notably, gelators obtained from n -hexane readily adsorbed rhodamine B in solution, which was considered useful for removing toxic dye molecules in wastewater. LC molecules described herein were capable of gelation and have useful oxidation and stimulus-responsive properties. They may therefore be useful for developing sensors and optoelectronic materials.
