Abstract:A microscopic description of the quasielastic (p,n) charge-exchange reaction (here, charge-exchange scattering between analogue states) is presented and discussed. Emphasis is focused on the spin-isospin structure of the projectile-target coupling. The model is a coupled-channel extension of the full-folding optical model approach (OMP) developed for nucleon elastic scattering, where emphasis is placed on retaining the genuine off-shell behavior of realistic effective interactions in the nuclear medium. The resulting non-local optical potentials are applied to the calculation of (p,n) differential cross sections, with particular emphasis on small-angle Fermi ($\Delta S=0$) cross-sections to isobaric analog states. These parameter-free results provide a reasonable description of the $^{14}$C(p,n)-data at proton energies above $\sim$100 MeV, but deteriorate for heavier targets. These shortcomings are analyzed and possible ways to correct them are discussed.

Charge exchange in relativistic heavy ion collisions

Abstract:Elastic charge-exchange in relativistic heavy ion collisions is responsible for the non-disruptive change of the charge state of the nuclei. We show that it can be reliably calculated within the eikonal approximation for the reaction part. The formalism is applied to the charge-pickup cross sections of 158 GeV/nucleon Pb projectiles on several targets. The relative contributions of pion- and rho-exchange are determined, using a single-particle model for the internal structure of the nuclei. The calculated cross sections are non-negligible for heavy targets. It is shown that these cross sections can be useful to obtain information on the Gamow-Teller transition strengths of the nuclei.

Abstract:$q$ numbers are introduced to replace $c$ numbers for the density function $\ensuremath{\rho}$ in a recent model of high-energy elastic scattering. The result is shown to be equivalent to the Glauber theory suitably generalized. The model leads naturally to the distinction between diffractive and nondiffractive excitation processes. The former has finite cross sections at infinite energy. Selection and intensities rules for diffractive excitation processes are discussed.

Abstract:An extra term of n-p effective interaction containing charge exchange component is proposed and applied to treating odd-mass nuclei with shape coexistence. The energy spectra and some E2 transition branching ratios are calculated for odd-A nuclei Sb-113 similar to 125,I-115 similar to 127. With the inclusion of new term, an overall agreement with experiment is much improved.

Abstract:Based on a semi-empirical generalized Anderson-Newns model we construct a pseudo-particle description for electron emission due to de-excitation of metastable molecules at surfaces. The pseudo-particle approach allows us to treat resonant charge-transfer and Auger processes on an equal footing, as it is necessary when both channels are open. This is for instance the case when a metastable nitrogen molecule hits a diamond surface. Using non-equilibrium Green functions and physically motivated approximations to the self-energies of the Dyson equations we derive a system of rate equations for the probabilities with which the metastable molecule, the molecular ground state, and the negative ion can be found in the course of the scattering event. From the rate equations we also obtain the spectrum of the emitted electron and the secondary electron emission coefficient. Our numerical results indicate the resonant tunneling process undermining the source of the Auger channel which therefore contributes only a few percent to the secondary electron emission.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Charge exchange has been recognized as a primary source of soft X-ray emission in many astrophysical outflow environments, including cometary and planetary exospheres impacted by the solar wind. Some models have been set up by using different data collections of charge-exchange cross-sections. However, multiple-electron transfer has not been included in these models. In this paper, we set up a charge-exchange model with the inclusion of double-electron capture (DEC), and make a detailed investigation of this process on X-ray emissions of highly charged carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and neon ions by using available experimental cross-sections. We also study the effect of different n-selective cross-sections on soft X-ray emission by using available experimental n-distributions. This work reveals that DEC enhancement on line intensity is linearly proportional to the ratio of ion abundance in the solar wind. It is more obvious for soft X-rays from carbon ions (C4+) in collision with CO2, and the enhancement on line intensity can be up to 53 per cent with typical ion abundances [Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE)] in the solar wind. The synthetic spectra with parameters from the Ulysses mission for the solar wind reveal velocity dependence, target dependence, as well as the non-negligible contribution from the DEC.

Medium recoil mode of $Δ$ production in single isobaric charge-exchange reactions

Abstract:The dynamic mechanisms underlying single charge-exchange reactions have been investigated using a theoretical framework that combines the Isospin-dependent Quantum Molecular Dynamics (IQMD) model with the statistical decay model GEMINI++. Two distinct channels contribute to the single isobaric charge-exchange reaction: quasi-elastic channel, where neutron-proton scattering drives the charge-exchange, and inelastic channel, where the $\Delta$ particle is produced during the process. In a referenced study [<a class="link-external link-http" href="http://Phys.RevC" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> 106.014618(2022)], experimental data have revealed that the inelastic channel accounts for approximately 50 percent of the single isobaric charge-exchange reaction. However, our current model fails in reproducing the significant contribution of inelastic channel unless the novel medium recoil mode associated with $\Delta$ production is considered in the calculations. Notably, this in-medium effect arising from inelastic nucleon-nucleon collisions is not yet incorporated into mainstream microscopic transport models. The dynamical properties of protons and pions emitting in the single isobaric charge-exchange reactions are predicted. This exploration of in-medium effects adds a valuable dimension to our understanding of the intricate dynamics involved in single charge-exchange reactions.

Abstract:The charge states of Cs ions/atoms scattered from Cs/W(110) or sputtered from Cs/Al surfaces have been calculated as a function of the work function and the temperature of the surface in terms of the time-dependent Newns-Anderson quantum model with the intra-atomic Coulomb interaction. The calculated results are in good agreement with the experimental data. Furthermore, the probabilities of charge states of the moving Cs ions/atoms approaching and leaving the surface are demonstrated.

Abstract:Based on an extended multiphase transport model, which includes mean-field potentials in both the partonic and hadronic phases, uses the mix-event coalescence, and respects charge conservation during the hadronic evolution, we have studied the collision energy dependence of the elliptic flow splitting between particles and their antiparticles. This extended transport model reproduces reasonably well the experimental data at lower collision energies but only describes qualitatively the elliptic flow splitting at higher beam energies. The present study thus indicates the existence of other mechanisms for the elliptic flow splitting besides the mean-field potentials and the need of further improvements of the multiphase transport model.

Abstract:The theory of heavy ion double charge exchange (DCE) reactions $A(Z,N)\to A(Z\pm 2,N\mp 2)$ is recapitulated emphasizing the role of Double Single Charge Exchange (DSCE) and pion-nucleon Majorana DCE (MDCE) reactions. DSCE reactions are of second--order distorted wave character, mediated by isovector nucleon-nucleon (NN) interactions. The DSCE response functions resemble the nuclear matrix elements (NME) of $2\nu 2\beta$ decay. The MDCE process proceeds by a dynamically generated effective rank-2 isotensor interaction, defined by off--shell pion--nucleon DCE scattering. In closure approximation pion potentials and two--nucleon correlations are obtained, similar to the neutrino potentials and the intranuclear exchange of Majorana neutrinos in $0\nu 2 \beta$ Majorana double beta decay (MDBD).

Abstract:We present the first high-resolution laboratory spectra of X-ray emission following L-shell charge exchange between nickel ions and neutral H2 and He. We employ the commonly used charge exchange models found in XSPEC and SPEX, ACX and SPEX-CX, to simulate our experimental results. We show that significant differences between data and models exist in both line energies and strengths. In particular, we find that configuration mixing may play an important role in generating lines from core-excited states, and may be improperly treated in models. Our results indicate that if applied to astrophysical data, these models may lead to incorrect assumptions of the physical and chemical parameters of the region of interest.

Binary particle collisions with mass exchange

Abstract:We investigate a kinetic model for interacting particles whose masses are integer multiples of an elementary mass. These particles undergo binary collisions which preserve momentum and energy but during which some number of elementary masses can be exchanged between the particles. We derive a Boltzmann collision operator for such collisions and study its conservation properties. Under some adequate assumptions on the collision rates, we show that it satisfies a H-theorem and exhibit its equilibria. We formally derive the system of fluid equations that arises from the hydrodynamic limit of this Boltzmann equation. We compute the viscous corrections to the leading order hydrodynamic equations on a simplified collision operator of BGK type. We show that this diffusive system can be put in the formalism of nonequilibrium thermodynamics. In particular, it satisfies Onsager's reciprocity relation and entropy decay.

Abstract:A procedure of combining the medium energy scattering theory in the Eikonal approximation with the interacting boson model is proposed to study the pion-nucleus scattering. The channel coupling effects in the excitation of nuclear collective state with pi- and pi+ elastic and inelastic scattering are analyzed. The calculated cross sections for the excitation of 2(1)+ state of Sn-118 agree with experimental data quite well.

Abstract:In the present work, the consideration of a dynamic charge to describe the non-Coulomb potential of the residual target for ionisation in bare ion–multielectron atom collisions is studied. This is based on the well-known Belkić's prescription. It is shown that using an emission-angle-dependent charge in the final residual target continuum state improves the doubly differential cross sections for backward emission angles. It appears as an excellent choice to avoid large time-consuming calculations, associated with the use of numerical continuum functions. Improving the physical description of the ionisation reaction whilst keeping calculation times as low as possible is necessary for multiple applications that require large cross sections databases.

Abstract:A nanoparticle charging model considering simultaneous diffusion, direct photoionization and thermionization charging was developed. The model included a balance expression for the positive and negative ions, and one for each charge level of the particles. Three comparable parameters: attachment coefficient, β±(v,q), photoelectric yield coefficient, α+(v,q), and thermionic yield coefficient, γ+(v,q), were identified that govern different charging mechanisms. By comparing these parameters, the importance of different mechanisms was explored. Analytical (closed-form) solutions under certain unipolar and bipolar conditions were proposed. Literature reported experimental data on a soft-X-ray based unipolar charger was used to verify this model and fair agreement was achieved. A numerical algorithm was developed to solve the governing equations for a soft-X-ray enhanced electrostatic precipitator (ESP) system. The role of soft-X-ray irradiation at improving nanoparticle average charge and enhancing the ESP capture efficiency was demonstrated. Experimental tests with this system were also conducted. Measured capture efficiency showed excellent agreement with theoretical results.
Detailed modeling of odd–even staggering in fission-fragment charge distributions

Abstract:During the last 10 years or so the Brownian shape-motion (BSM) model has been used in numerous calculations of fission-fragment mass and charge distributions with encouraging agreement with experimental measurements. In this model the structure obtained in the fission-fragment distributions is entirely a consequence of the structures in the calculated five-dimensional (5D) potential-energy surfaces. The potential-energy model until recently did not accommodate the influence of the emerging fragment properties on the calculated potential energy. Therefore there were no odd-even effects in the calculated fission-fragment distributions. Recent extensions of the potential-energy model allow properties of the nascent fragments to be included in the potential-energy model. Application of the BSM model to execute random walks on these more detailed potential-energy surfaces led to calculated fission-fragment yields that exhibited odd-even effects, which "by eye" indicated reasonable agreement with experimental data. The present work goes a step further with a quantitative comparison between experimental and theoretical results based on the global and local odd-even staggering observables. Theoretical calculations and experimental observations both show that pairing effects and enhancement of two-nucleon relative to one-nucleon transfer in heavy-ion collisions decrease with excitation energy and implementing a damping of these quantities with excitation energy leads to improved agreement with experiment. Characteristic variations of the local staggering with charge split seen in the experimental data are also present in the calculated results.

Abstract:A simple hadronic transport model is proposed for studying the rescattering effect of the pion on the K/pi ratio in relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions. The experimental evidences of evolutionary increase of the K/pi ratio from p + p to p + Au and to Si + Au at similar incident energy per nucleon are reproduced reasonably. Experimental results of the K/pi ratio at CERN energy (200 GeV/nucleon p + W and S + W) comparable with corresponding results at the Brookhaven Alternating Gradient Synchrotron energy (14.6 GeV/nucleon p + Au and Si + Au) are reproduced as well.
Exploring a novel model for projectile charge state distribution inside a solid-target

Abstract:For the first time, we report a theoretical methodology to predict charge state distribution of projectile ions inside a solid-target. The method utilizes either a simple Fermi gas model or an ab initio theoretical method and a certain parameterization of width for the Lorentzian charge state distributions. Results obtained from the two approaches are comparable, but the former has a certain edge over the latter. The projectile charge state distribution inside a solid-target plays a significant role in estimating electron capture cross-sections and then to describe the observed K-shell ionization dynamics. The electron capture process plays a certain role in L-shell ionization dynamics too, but in a test case of Si on Au target the subshell charge sharing contributes a more vital role than the electron capture. Thus, we have validated the present model as a reliable as well as useful for many solid-target based applications viz. tumour therapy, biophysics, accelerators, material science etc.

Abstract:The mass yield and the charge dispersion of secondary fragments produced in high-energetic proton-xenon bombardment are analysed in the frame of our statistical multifragmentation model. The critical mass distribution as well as the charge dispersion, which have led to the discussion of a nuclear liquid-gas phase transition, are easily reproduced within our model. A clear signal of a “phase transition” at T=5 MeV is found and is analysed in terms of various multifragment correlations.
