Abstract:We consider a purely algebraic result. Then given a circle or cyclic group of prime order action on a manifold, we will use it to estimate the lower bound of the number of fixed points. We also give an obstruction to the existence of $\mathbb{Z}_p$ action on manifolds with isolated fixed points when $p$ is a prime.

Abstract:This paper contains several results concerning circle action on almost-complex and smooth manifolds. More precisely, we show that, for an almost-complex manifold $M^{2mn}$(resp. a smooth manifold $N^{4mn}$), if there exists a partition $\lambda=(\lambda_{1},...,\lambda_{u})$ of weight $m$ such that the Chern number $(c_{\lambda_{1}}... c_{\lambda_{u}})^{n}[M]$ (resp. Pontrjagin number $(p_{\lambda_{1}}... p_{\lambda_{u}})^{n}[N]$) is nonzero, then \emph{any} circle action on $M^{2mn}$ (resp. $N^{4mn}$) has at least $n+1$ fixed points. When an even-dimensional smooth manifold $N^{2n}$ admits a semi-free action with isolated fixed points, we show that $N^{2n}$ bounds, which generalizes a well-known fact in the free case. We also provide a topological obstruction, in terms of the first Chern class, to the existence of semi-free circle action with \emph{nonempty} isolated fixed points on almost-complex manifolds. The main ingredients of our proofs are Bott's residue formula and rigidity theorem.

Abstract:Let 𝒮 be a finite thick generalized quadrangle, and suppose that G is an automorphism group of 𝒮 . If G acts primitively on both the points and lines of 𝒮 , then it is known that G must be almost simple. In this paper, we show that if the socle of G is PSL(2,q) with q≥ 4 , then q=9 and 𝒮 is the unique generalized quadrangle of order 2.

Abstract:Let $\mathfrak{g}$ be the simple Lie algebra of square matrices $(n+1)\times (n+1)$ with zero trace. There are certain relations concerning standard automorphisms that are considered ``folklore". One can find a complete proof of these in Millson and Toledano Laredo's work [Transformation Groups, Vol. 10, No. 2, 2005, pp. 217-254], but said proof is based on topological arguments which are non-trivial. The aim of this work is to verify these relations in an elementary way.

Abstract:We prove many new cases of Zimmer's conjecture for actions by lattices in non-$\mathbb{R}$-split semisimple Lie groups $G$. By prior arguments, Zimmer's conjecture reduces to studying certain probability measures invariant under a minimal parabolic subgroup for the induced $G$-action. Two techniques are introduced to give lower bounds on the dimension of a manifold $M$ admitting a non-isometric action. First, when the Levi component of the stabilizer of the measure has higher-rank simple factors, cocycle superrigidity provides a lower bound on the dimension of $M$. Second, when certain fiberwise coarse Lyapunov distributions are one-dimensional, a measure rigidity argument provides additional invariance of the measure if the associated root spaces are higher-dimensional.

Abstract:Consider a smooth action G×M→M of a compact connected Lie group G on a connected manifold M . Assume the existence of a point of M whose isotropy group has a single element (a free point). Then we prove that there exist two complete vector field X,X1 such that their group of automorphisms equals G regarded as a group of diffeomorphisms of M (the existence of a free point implies that the action of G is effective). Moreover, some examples of effective actions with no free point where this result fails are exhibited.

Fixed points of Lie group actions on moduli spaces: A tale of two actions

Abstract:In this paper, we examine Lie group actions on moduli spaces (sets themselves built as quotients by group actions) and their fixed points. We show that when the Lie group is compact and connected, we obtain a linear constraint. This constraint makes the problem of finding fixed points one of representation theory, greatly simplifying the search for such points. We obtain a similar result when the Lie group is one-dimensional. For compact and disconnected Lie groups, we show that we need only additionally check a finite number of points. Finally, we show that the subgroup fixing an equivalence class in the moduli space is a compact Lie subgroup.

Abstract:Ulam asked whether all Lie groups can be represented faithfully on a countable set. We establish a reduction of Ulam's problem to the case of simple Lie groups. In particular, we solve the problem for all solvable Lie groups and more generally Lie groups with a linear Levi component. It follows that every amenable locally compact second countable group acts faithfully on a countable set.

Abstract:In this paper, simplicity of quadratic Lie conformal algebras are investigated. From the point view of the corresponding Gel'fand-Dorfman bialgebras, some sufficient conditions and necessary conditions to ensure simplicity of quadratic Lie conformal algebras are presented. By these observations, we present several classes of new infinite simple Lie conformal algebras. These results will be useful for classification purposes.

Abstract:The notion of a simple extended Lie Rinehart algebra is defined and this gives a way to construct Lie Rinehart algebras via derivations.It is a special kind of the action Lie Rinehart algebras.Under the condition that the coefficient ring is a commutative algbra and has no zero-divizors,the full classifaction of such simple extended Lie Rinehart algebras is given.For the action Lie Rinehart algebras which arise from nontrivial actions on the ring of polynomials,it is proved that they must be simple extended Lie Rinehart algebras and their standard forms are given.

In this paper, we show that $\operatorname{soc}(G)$ cannot be isomorphic to $\operatorname{Sz}(2^{2m+1})$ or $\operatorname{Ree}(3^{2m+1})$ where $m$ is a positive integer.

Abstract:Let ? be a finite-dimensional complex semisimple Lie algebra and sigma an arbitrary semisimple automorphism of ?. Let ? be a Cartan subalgebra of ?=?(sigma) and ? =Z(?)(?) be the centralizer of ? in ?. Then ? is a sigma-invariant Cartan subalgebra of ? and ?=?(sigma). Let W(?, ?) be the Weyl group. One knows that (?, ?), the set of roots of ? in ?, is also a root system. It is proved that the corresponding Weyl group W(?, ?) is isomorphic to W(?, ?)(sigma), which is the subgroup of W(?, ?) consisting of those elements commuting with sigma. It is also shown that the image of the restriction map S(?*)S-W(?,S- ?)(?*)(W(?, ?)), where S(?*) and S(?*) are the polynomial algebras on ? and ?, respectively, is exactly S(?*)(W(?, ?)). Based on the above result, we also get a complete classification of the pairs (?, sigma) such that ?(sigma) is noncohomologous to zero in ?.

Abstract:Proper group actions are ubiquitous in mathematics and have many of the attractive features of actions of compact groups. In this survey, we discuss proper actions of Lie groups on smooth manifolds. If the group dimension is sufficiently high, all proper effective actions can be explicitly determined, and our principal goal is to provide a comprehensive exposition of known classification results in the complex setting. They include a complete description of Kobayashi-hyperbolic manifolds with high-dimensional automorphism group, which is a case of special interest.

Abstract:Given a simply connected solvable Lie group $G$, there always exists NIL-affine action $\rho: G \to \operatorname{Aff}(H)$ on a nilpotent Lie group $H$ such that $G$ acts simply transitively. The question whether this is always possible for $H = \mathbb{R}^n$ abelian was known as Milnor's question, with a negative answer due to a counterexample of Benoist. This counterexample is based on a correspondence between certain affine actions $\rho: G \to \operatorname{Aff}(\mathbb R^n)$ and left-symmetric structures on the corresponding Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$ of $G$, where simply transitive actions correspond exactly to the so-called complete left-symmetric structures. In general however, the question remains open which solvable Lie groups $G$ can act on which nilpotent Lie groups $H$.

Abstract:We provide a framework for studying concrete C*-algebras associated with algebraic actions of semigroups: Given such an action, we construct an inverse semigroup, and we introduce conditions for algebraic actions that characterize Hausdorffness, topological freeness, and minimality of the associated tight groupoid. We parameterize all closed invariant subspaces of the unit space of our groupoid, and characterize topological freeness of the associated reduction groupoids. We prove that our groupoids are purely infinite whenever they are minimal, and in the topologically free case, we prove that our concrete C*-algebra is always a (possibly exotic) groupoid C*-algebra in the sense that it sits between the full and essential C*-algebras of our groupoid. As an application, we obtain structural results for C*-algebras associated with, for instance, shifts over semigroups, actions coming from commutative algebra, and non-commutative rings.

Abstract:We study isometric actions of compact Lie groups on complete orientable positively curved n-manifolds whose orbit spaces have non-empty boundary in the sense of Alexandrov geometry. In particular, we classify quotients of the unit sphere by actions of compact simple Lie groups with non-empty boundary. We deduce from this the list of representations of compact simple Lie groups that admit non-trivial reductions. As a tool of special interest, we introduce a new geometric invariant of a compact symmetric space, namely, the minimal number of points in a “spanning set” of the space.

Abstract:Using a almost product structure defined by a spray, we give a necessary and sufficient condition, for a linear connection with vanishing torsion to be Riemannian and, for the semi-simplicity of Lie algebra of projectable vector fields which commute with a spray. We show the equivalence of the semi-simplicity of a finite dimensional Lie algebra to the coincidence of the derived ideal with its algebra, to the interiority of any derivation of the algebra and, to the semi-simplicity of its adjoint representation.
