Abstract:Working memory (WM) constitutes an essential cognitive resource affecting the interpreting process and its performance. Thus far no research seems to have reportedly enquired into the effect of WM on simultaneous interpretation. This paper reports on a study conducted along this line, which has yielded the following findings: 1) WM growth potential is confirmed in interpreting (simultaneous interpreting in particular), and prolonged training and practice in interpreting improves interpreters’ WM capacity; 2) WM growth potential in interpreting is characterized more by a higher efficiency in allocating cognitive resources than by an increase in memory capacity; 3) WM growth potential is closely linked to interpreting experience and practice, which appear to improve allocation efficiency to a greater extent than memory capacity.
