Abstract:An equation, I = AI'BN+C-1 Sigma n(i)R(Di)+C-2 mu(A)(2)+C(3)(alpha)alpha+C(3)(beta)beta+C-4 was derived to correlate the Kovats retention indices for solutes on different stationary phases. In this equation, A is determined by the interaction energy of a methylene group on two stationary phases. B is mainly determined by the relative intermolecular interaction energy of the carbon chain of a compound on two stationary phases. C-1 is mainly determined by the dispersive interaction difference of the functional group(s) of a compound on two phases. Ct is determined by the difference of the dipole moment interaction energy of a compound on two phases C-3(alpha), C-3(beta) are determined by the differences of the relative hydrogen-bonding acceptor basicity or donor acidity of two phases. Therefore, we recommended B to describe the polarity of a stationary phases, the coefficient-B, C-3(alpha), C-3(beta) to describe the selectivity of a stationary phase. These coefficients for 89 stationary phases were presented in present paper.
Solubility prediction for cholesterol and desmosterol in mixed solvents via NRTL-SAC and COSMO-RS

Abstract:Solubility of cholesterol and desmosterol in mixed solvents was predicted via two thermodynamic models, NRTL-SAC and COSMO-RS. With experimental data as the basis, average relative deviation (ARD)was used to evaluate the prediction effects of the models. To fill the blank of solubility data, the solubilities of two sterols at 298.2 K in mixed solvent with different compositions were determined using the static method combined with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The ARDs by NRTL-SAC for two sterols in mixed solvents are less than 50.58%. The prediction results by COSMO-RS are extremely dissatisfied, but the predicted values satisfactorily agree with the experimental values by using an experimental datum. The total ARDs for cholesterol and desmosterol in n-hexane + ethanol mixed solvents decrease to 12.77% and 21.32% from 80.57% and 82.30%, respectively. The results show that NRTL-SAC from limited experimental data and COSMO-RS with only one experimental datum can be used for solubility prediction for two sterols, and are useful in rapid selection of suitable solvents for industrial separation and purification processes. © All Rights Reserved.

Abstract:Standard changes of enthalpy (Delta H degrees) and entropy (Delta S degrees) of dissolving process from gas phase into supported film of DB18C6 have been determined for some organic solutes using gas - liquid chromatographic technique (GLCT). To almost every solute, entropy effect (-T Delta S degrees) is larger than calorific effect (-Delta H degrees) under the present experimental conditions. The data of calorific effects have been discussed in the light of intermolecular forces, which indicate that different solute molecules may approach to and interact with different local parts of the crown ether molecule.

Abstract:The present review considers some physicochemical properties of fluid mixtures that are of importance for fluid extraction and supercitical fluid chromatography (SFC). Firstly, the important types of phase diagrams are treated, the occurrence of solid phases also being considered in some simple cases. Specific examples are given of mixtures of a highly volatile component I (e.g. CO2, C2H6) with a relatively involatile component II (e.g. squalane) of very different molecular size, shape, structure, and/or polarity, and it is shown how the rather complicated types of phase diagrams can be calculated and correlated. The importance of fluid mixtures extends far beyond the fields of science and technology reviewed.

Abstract:Gas-liquid chromatography is an effective method to determine infinite dilution activity coefficients (γ∞). Wall-coated open-tubular (WCOT) column which offers more advantages over packed column should be a preferable column type; however, the small carrier gas flow rate and stationary phase amount in WCOT columns limit its application in the determination of γ∞. Mathematical strategy made some progress to avoid the quantification problem in the determination of γ∞ by static-wall-coated open-tubular (SWCOT) columns. However, the previously reported strategy was based on the assumption that SWCOT column was geometrically an ideal hollow cylinder, which indeed deviates from the reality. In this study, without that assumption, we derived a new microgeometry-independent equation by using the relationship between the hold-up volume (VM) and the volume of stationary phase (VL), and used it to measure the γ∞ of various organic solutes in two ionic liquids (ILs) 1‑butyl‑3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide and 1,3-dibutyronitrile-imidazolium bis((trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl)imide, both of which contain double cyano groups in the anion or cation. Phase loading study was adopted to eliminate the influence of interfacial adsorption to partition. The infinite dilution partial molar excess enthalpy, selectivity and capacity were directly calculated from the experimental γ∞ values, and the linear solvation energy relationship (LSER) model was used to characterize the specific properties of both ILs. This new established equation will promote the application of SWCOT columns in thermodynamic measurement and benefit the fast screening of novel solvents for chemical separation processes.
New Equation for Gas-Liquid/Solid Phase Transition

Abstract:A new and concise equation for the gas-liquid or gas-solid phase transition is proposed based on the theory that the heat exchanges between a gas and its surroundings via the phase transition. Given that it is reversible, P=(1-x_2)RT/V_G and x_2=V_L/V_G e^(3/2-(π^α mg)/(RTV_G )). Similar to van der Waals’s equation for real gases, a factor of molecular interaction α is introduced in the form of system potential. Hence, it is also the state equation at saturation. P-V-T saturation data of 79 substances issued by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) are used as standards to calibrate the equation and determine α. As a result, the equation fits all substances well. The system potential is indispensable only near Tc in a narrow temperature region where the gas molar volume (VG) is comparable to the liquid (VL). It indicates that the system potential is achieved through short-term repulsive interactions rather than attractive ones. Tc corresponds to the temperature with a molar fraction of liquefaction x2 = 60-70%, at which the heat exchange is interrupted. α of each substance is determined by simulation. It seems to fall in the series: -2/3, -1/3, 0, 1/3, 2/3, 1, and 4/3.

Abstract:Densities and viscosities of the binary system of ethylene glycol (EG) (1)+dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) (2) over the entire composition range were measured at T=(298.15, 303.15, 308.15, 313.15, 318.15, and 323.15) K and atmospheric pressure. Based on density and viscosity data, the excess molar volume, viscosity deviation, excess Gibbs free energy of activation for the viscous flow, and apparent molar volumes were calculated. These results were fitted to a Redlich–Kister equation to obtain the coefficients and to estimate the standard deviations between the experimental and calculated quantities. Meanwhile, from the kinematic viscosity data, the enthalpy of activation for viscous flow and entropy of activation for the viscous flow were also calculated. In addition, based on UV–vis and FTIR spectral results, the intermolecular interaction of EG with DMSO was discussed.

Abstract:For method development in gas chromatography, suitable computer simulations can be very helpful during the optimization process. For such computer simulations retention parameters are needed, that describe the interaction of the analytes with the stationary phase during the separation process. There are different approaches to describe such an interaction, e.g. thermodynamic models like Blumberg's distribution-centric 3-parameter model ( K -centric model) or models using chemical properties like the Linear Solvation Energy Relationships (LSER). In this work LSER models for a Rxi-17Sil MS and a Rxi-5Sil MS GC column are developed for different temperatures. The influences of the temperature to the LSER system coefficients are shown in a range between 40 and 200°C and can be described with Clark and Glew's ABC model as fit function. A thermodynamic interpretation of the system constants is given and its contribution to enthalpy and entropy is calculated. An estimation method for the retention parameters of the K -centric model via LSER models were presented. The predicted retention parameters for a selection of 172 various compounds, such as FAMEs, PCBs and PAHs are compared to isothermal determined values. 40 measurements of temperature programmed GC separations are compared to computer simulations using the differently determined or estimated K -centric retention parameters. The mean difference (RSME) between the measured and predicted retention time is less than 8 s for both stationary phases using the isothermal retention parameters. With the LSER predicted parameters the difference is 20 s for the Rxi-5Sil MS and 38 s for the Rxi-17Sil MS. Therefore, the presented estimation method can be recommended for first method development in gas chromatography.

Abstract:Thermodynamic functions, including enthalpy (Hθ) and entropy (Sθ) for 76 polychlorophenazines (PCPZs) in the gas state at 298.15 K and 101.325 kPa, have been calculated using the B3LYP/6-31G∗level with Gaussian 03 program, and considered on solvation affects. Total free energy in water (Gw) was calculated with the same program. Based on these data, the isodesmic reactions were designed to calculate the standard formation heat (ΔfHθ) and standard free energy of formation in water(ΔfGwθ). The dependences of these thermodynamic parameters on the numbers and positions of chlorine substitution (NPCS) were discussed. It is suggested thatSθ, ΔfHθ, andΔfGwθof PCPZs varied greatly withNPCS. Moreover, the values of molar heat capacity at constant pressure (Cp,m) from 200 to 1800 K for PCPZ congeners were calculated using a statistical thermodynamics calculation program based on Gaussian output files, and the temperature-dependence relation ofCp,mwas obtained using the least-squares method. In addition, according to the relative magnitude of theirΔfGwθ, the relative stability order of PCPZ congeners was theoretically proposed.

Abstract:The changes of standard thermodynamic functions (ΔH° and ΔS°) for 21 organic compounds dissolved in supported polyethylene glycol-6000 from gas phase have been determined using gas–liquid chromatographic technique. The experimental thermodynamic data have been discussed in the light of interaction between molecules of the solvent and solute. Selective intermolecular forces are believed to be the main cause of PEG selectively dissolving and separating solutes. Selectivity of the PEG is not only observed to polar substances but also to apolar ones such as benzene and cyclohexane. We believe that the macromolecule can adjust its conformation when it receives a solute molecule, so as to more strongly interact with the small molecule. When such strong negative electric groups as carbonyl oxygen atom, nitro group approach ethylene of PEG or strongly positive charged hydrogen atom(s) approach(s) an oxygen atom of PEG, strong intermolecular forces occur and solution heats are large. On the other hand, strongly intermolecular force may be caused by a kind of synergistic interaction between the solvent and solute molecules. In such a case, a solute molecule is attracted by two or more sites on the polymer chain.
Influence of pressure gradient on column efficiency in GC separations

Abstract:Pressure gradient along the column in gas chromatography leads to the decompression of the carrier gas and thus varied flow velocity that can be accounted for by the Darcy's law. By solving mathematical models such as the equilibrium dispersive (ED) and the transport models, which account for axial dispersion and mass transfer processes between mobile and stationary phases, respectively, the expressions for retention time and plate height under such nonuniform condition were obtained. As a first approximation, it is assumed that pressure gradient has little affect on the mass transfer coefficients such as axial dispersion coefficient (D) and lumped mass transfer coefficient (k(f)). It is found that, by using average flow velocity ((u) over bar) that includes the parameter of inlet-outlet pressure ratio (gamma), the expressions obtained from the transport model can be reduced to the mathematical forms of the expressions deduced by assuming uniform flow velocity. By contrast, the expressions obtained from the ED model show some differences. These results indicate the coupling effect between pressure gradient and axial dispersion. In most practical cases, retention time expressions obtained from these models are consistent due to large value of average Peclet number. The plate height accounting for axial dispersion effects will vary from 2D /(u) over bar to 2.7D /(u) over bar when gamma changes from 1 to infinity.

A simple heuristic approach to estimate the thermochemistry of condensed-phase molecules based on the polarizable continuum model

Abstract:A simple model based on a quantum chemical approach with polarizable continuum models (PCMs) to provide reasonable translational and rotational entropies for liquid phase molecules was developed. A translational term was evaluated with free-volume compensation for the Sackur-Tetrode equation. We assumed that the free-volume corresponds to the cavity volume in the PCM. A rotational term was modeled as restricted rotation of a dipole in the electrostatic field. Entropies were assessed for twenty species in the liquid-phase using the proposed model, and the computed values were compared with experimental values. Quantum chemistry calculations were conducted at the ωB97X-D/6-311++G(d,p) level with the conductor-like PCM method. Predicted entropies were in good agreement with the experimental entropies, and the root mean square deviation was 17.2 J mol-1 K-1. The standard enthalpy change of formation was then investigated for eleven specific species. The CBS-QB3//ωB97X-D method provides a reasonable standard enthalpy of formation for gasified species; however, improvement of the accuracy is required for liquid species. Finally, the dependence of the Gibbs energy on temperature was investigated for the eleven specific species. When the ideal gas treatment is used, the Gibbs energy trends for the gaseous and liquid phases are quasi-parallel for all of the species, although the Gibbs energy trends for liquids based on the proposed model intersected the gaseous trend (i.e. the intersection is the boiling point). However, the model significantly under or overestimated the experimental boiling points. The error of the boiling points was predominantly due to the inaccuracy of the enthalpy.

Abstract:There had been little progress in development of the theoretical basis of rectangular chromatography columns until Spangler made great progress by using a more exact model than Golay's. Unfortunately, there was a deficiency in his calculations, which led to a conclusion inconsistent with the previous theories. In this paper, a simpler formula with defined variables was first established to calculate the mean permeability coefficient for a rectangular GC column. A formula was also established to calculate the height equivalent to a theoretical plate (HETP) for a rectangular column based on this work and the correction of Spangler's theory. By comparing both our predictions and Spangler's predictions with Golay's, respectively, we could demonstrate that our theory is more exact. Further, one parameter (A) was found to be not monotonous. This finding leads to the conclusion that the square column has the highest performance among all the rectangular-shaped columns used for chromatography, and that a width/depth ratio of around three is desirable if the column is used for mixing reactants in lab-on-a-chip systems, instead of for chromatography. The conclusions are applicable not only for gas but also for liquid chromatography columns.

Abstract:This work reports density and viscosity data for binary system of polyethylene glycol 200 (PEG) (1) + dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) (2) over the whole concentration range at T = (298.15, 303.15, 308.15, 313.15, and 318.15) K as a function of composition under atmospheric pressure. Abstract:Isobaric vapor-liquid equilibrium data were determined at 101.33 kPa for the binary mixtures of tetraethylene glycol-water, and tetraethylene glycol-m-xylene. Fugacity coefficients of the vapor phase were calculated from the virial equation. For liquid phase, activity coefficients using four models (van Laar, Wilson NRTL and UNIQUAC) with their respective binary mixtures were regressed from the experimental data. A comparison of model results is made by root mean square deviations of boiling point data.

Abstract:This paper describes apparatus of a new design for measuring accurately gas-liquid retention volumes in packed columns under carrier gas pressures up to 25 atm. It includes a high pressure soap-film flowmeter, a high pressure vapour phase sample injection system and a pressure control system at the column outlet which enables a flame-ionization detector to be operated at atmospheric pressure. Results are reported for a series of hydrocarbon solutes in three different stationary liquids (squalane, dinonylphthalate and n -hexadecane), with nitrogen, hydrogen and argon as carrier gases. Solute activity coefficients at infinite dilution in the stationary liquids, and second virial coefficients ( B 12 ) for the solute + carrier gas mixtures have been obtained by analysing the retention volume data by the procedure established in part I. The activity coefficients are compared with values obtained from static vapour pressure measurements made by two widely different methods, and the agreement is satisfactory in both cases. The second virial coefficients ( B 12 ) are compared with those values predicted by the principle of corresponding states via the reduced equation of state of McGlashan & Potter (1962). The B 12 values given by using the ‘geometric mean’ combining rule for the mixed critical temperature in the reduced equation of state differ from our experimental values by as much as 75 cm 3 /mole. Using the combining rule of Hudson & McCoubrey (1960) or that of Munn (1961), both of which take account of differences in molal volume and ionization potential between the two components, however, gives B 12 values which agree with our experimental values.

Abstract:Proceeding from the Clausius-Clapeyron equation, the relation is derived that establishes a correlation between the partial enthalpy of evaporation from binary solutions, concentrations of components, and equilibrium vapor pressures. The difference between enthalpies of evaporation of components from solutions and those from the pure liquids, D(DH), depends on the chemical nature and concentrations, X, of solutions. The effect of concentrations on D(DH) makes different appearances in ideal and non-ideal solutions, although, as a whole, D(DH) increases with the growth of concentration of the second component. A model is introduced, which considers D(DH) as the sum of energetic changes of three sequential stages: passage of molecules from the bulk liquid into the surface layer, exit of the molecules on the outer side of the interface, and the following desorption into the gas phase. In the framework of the model, the main contribution to enthalpy of evaporation comes from the processes in the surface layer. It is suggested that adsorption from solutions, which changes the chemical composition of the surface layer with respect to that of the bulk solution, determines, to great extent, the difference in the forms of the curves D(DH)=f(X) for ideal and non-ideal solutions.

Abstract:Surface tension is a basic and important thermophysical property for fluids. In this work, a model based on the gradient theory combining with the volume translation Peng-Robinson EOS was established to predict the surface tension of HCs/HCs and HCs/CO 2 binary mixtures, this model is predictive which does not rely on the experimental data of surface tension and vapor-liquid equilibrium of binary mixtures. The calculation results show that present model has good prediction accuracy on two kinds of specific HCs/HCs binary systems, one is mixtures with small difference of carbon atom number, the other one is mixtures with chain/cycle or cycle/cycle molecular structure, and the model can also predict the surface tension of HCs/CO 2 binary systems.
