Abstract:Many models for the pulsar radio and gamma-ray emissions have been developed. The tests for these models using observational data are very important. Tests for the pulsar radio emission models using frequency-altitude relation are presented in this paper. In the radio band, the mean pulse profiles evolve with observing frequencies. There are various styles of pulsar profile - frequency evolutions (which we call as "beam evolution" figure), e.g. some pulsars show that mean pulse profiles are wider and core emission is higher at higher frequencies than that at lower frequencies, but some other pulsars show completely the contrary results. We show that all these "beam evolution" figures can be understood by the Inverse Compton Scattering(ICS) model (see Qiao at al.2001 also). An important observing test is that, for a certain observing frequency different emission components are radiated from the different heights. For the gamma-ray pulsars, the geometrical method (Wang et al. 2006) can be used to diagnose the radiation location for the gamma-ray radiation. As an example, Wang et al. (2006) constrain the gamma-ray radiation location of PSR B1055-52 to be the place near the null charge surface. Here we show that Wang's result matches the proposed radiation locations by the annular gap model as well as the outer gap models.

Abstract:Using a new method of multi-frequency of K parameter, we estimate the ratio of altitudes of radio emission region of pulsars at 430 and 1418 MHz. The value of the ratio is 1.34±0.12 and the power law index of altitude-frequency is 0.24±0.08. It is indicated that the lower radio frequencies originate further out and the emission region is radially narrow.

Abstract:In order to select the optimal pulsars combination for X-ray Pulsar NAVigation (XPNAV), the influence factors of visibility, quality and space distribution of pulsars are studied. Besides, constraint equations for visibility based on the restrictions of celestial body’s shadow, X-ray disturbance source and detector’s angle of view are built respectively; an evaluation equation for quality factor based on Cramer-Rao low bound is analyzed; the method for calculating Weighted Dilution Of Precision (WDOP), which decreases as the number of observable pulsars increases, is researched. Finally, a method for selecting pulsars based on looking up table is proposed, and its validity is proved by computer simulations.

Abstract:In this paper, the Crame acute accent r-Rao Lower Bound (CRLB) for estimating the rotation parameters of pulsars using X-ray pulsar observa-tion data is deduced, and the calculation equation is presented. In order to verify the correctness of the deduced equation, we use the X-ray pulsar observation data to estimate pulsar rotation parameters, and obtain the root mean square error (RMSE) of the estimated pulsar rotation parameters through conducting repeated experiments. The experimental results suggest that when the observation time increases, the RMSE gradually approaches the estimated CRLB, and that when the observation time is 2.4 x 106 s, the error between the RMSE of pulsar frequency estimation and the CRLB stays at 10-11 order of magnitude. This verifies that the CRLB expression deduced in this paper is the theoretical lower bound for estimating pulsar rotation parameters. The deduced CRLB in this paper helps determine the minimum variance estimator for pulsar rotation parameter estimation using X-ray pulsar data, providing a benchmark for the com-parison between the minimum variance estimator and other estimators.(c) 2022 COSPAR. Abstract:The emission geometries, e.g. the emission region height, the beam shape, and radius-to-frequency mapping, are important predictions of pulsar radiation model. The multi-band radio observations carry such valuable information. In this paper, we study two bright pulsars, (PSRs B0329+54 and B1642-03) and observe them in high frequency (2.5 GHz, 5 GHz, and 8 GHz). The newly acquired data together with historical archive provide an atlas of multi-frequency profiles spanning from 100 MHz to 10 GHz. We study the frequency evolution of pulse profiles and the radiation regions with the these data. We firstly fit the pulse profiles with Gaussian functions to determine the phase of each component, and then calculate the radiation altitudes of different emission components and the radiation regions. We find that the inverse Compton scattering (ICS) model can reproduce the radiation geometry of these two pulsars. But for PSR B0329+54 the radiation can be generated in either annular gap (AG) or core gap (CG), while the radiation of PSR B1642-03 can only be generated in the CG. This difference is caused by the inclination angle and the impact angle of these two pulsars. The relation of beaming angle (the angle between the radiation direction and the magnetic axis) and the radiation altitudes versus frequency is also presented by modelling the beam-frequency evolution in the ICS model. The multi-band pulse profiles of these two pulsars can be described well by the ICS model combined with the CG and AG.
Energy Loss of Particles in Pulsar Radio Emission Region

Abstract:Extremely relativistic particles play an important role in various radiative mechanisms of pulsar radio as well as high-energy emission. It is thus very essential to estimate the Lorentz factor of these particles in the radiation regions both observationally and theoretically. In this paper, according to the frequency dependence of component separation and considering some radiation processes, we obtain the Lorentz factor and its variation in the radiation region observationally for seven multi-frequency observed pulsars. It is found that the Lorentz factor decays substantially in the emission region, and the decay can not be well understood by all known energy loss processes. This result hints that there are some unknown processes which are responsible to loosing energy effectively.

Abstract:We investigate radio emission efficiency, xi, of pulsars and report a near-linear inverse correlation between. and the spin-down power, E., as well as a near-linear correlation between xi and pulsar age, tau. This is a consequence of very weak, if any, dependences of radio luminosity, L, on pulsar period, P, and the period derivative, P., in contrast to X-ray or. gamma-ray emission luminosities. The analysis of radio fluxes suggests that these correlations are not due to a selection effect, but are intrinsic to the pulsar radio emission physics. We have found that, although with a large variance, the radio luminosity of pulsars is L approximate to 10(29) erg s(-1), regardless of the position in the P-P. diagram. Within such a picture, a model-independent statement can be made that the death line of radio pulsars corresponds to an upper limit in the efficiency of radio emission. If we introduce the maximum value for radio efficiency into the Monte Carlo-based population syntheses we can reproduce the observed sample using the random luminosity model. Using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test on a synthetic flux distribution reveals a high probability of reproducing the observed distribution. Our results suggest that the plasma responsible for generating radio emission is produced under similar conditions regardless of pulsar age, dipolar magnetic field strength, and spin-down rate. The magnetic fields near the pulsar surface are likely dominated by crust-anchored, magnetic anomalies, which do not significantly differ among pulsars, leading to similar conditions for generating electron-positron pairs necessary to power radio emission.

Abstract:Empirical theory of pulsar radio emission emphasized that the emission beam consists of a central core and two concentric cones and pointed out that there exists two distinct trends in mean pulse profile evolution: the profile width increases in one and decreases in the other, as the observing frequency increases. Such a scenario rules out the hollow-cone beam model. In this paper, within the framework of the inverse Compton scattering model of pulsar radio emission, we present our simulations for PSR 1237+25 and PSR 1933+16, representatives of the two trends. The agreement of our results with the observations confirms the role inverse Compton scattering plays in the pulsar radio emission processes.

Abstract:The multi-band observation, from radio to gamma-ray, plays a crucial role in constraining the emission physics and geometrical magnetospheric models of the pulsars. In this paper, We use three-dimensional magnetospheric model, with the joint of the annular gap (AG) and core gap (CG) model, to simulate the radio and gamma-ray light curves for two representative pulsars, a millisecond pulsar J2302+4442 and a young pulsar J0659+1414. It is found that for PSR J2302 + 4442, the simulated magnetic inclination angle α and viewing angle ζ are 34∘ and 46∘, and for PSR J0659 + 1414 are 45∘ and 33∘. This implies that the radio and gamma-ray pulse emission originates from different magnetospheric regions and the radiation geometry for millisecond and young pulsar is different. The studies show that the joint of the AG and CG model can describe the light curves not only for millisecond pulsars but also for young pulsars, and hence it can be used to explain the multi-wavelength observations of pulsars.

Abstract:The inverse Compton scattering (ICS) model can explain various pulse profile shapes and the diversity of the pulse profile evolution based on the mechanism where the radio emission is generated through ICS between secondary relativistic particles and radio waves from polar gap avalanches. In this paper, we study the parameter space of the ICS model for 15 pulsars that share the common pulse profile evolution phenomenon, where the pulse profiles are narrower at higher observing frequencies. Two key parameters, the initial Lorentz factor and the energy loss factor of secondary particles, are constrained using the least-squares fitting method, where we fit the theoretical curve of the "beam-frequency mapping" of the ICS model to the observed pulse widths at multiple frequencies. The uncertainty of the inclination and viewing angles are taken into account in the fitting process. It is found that the initial Lorentz factor is larger than 4000, and the energy loss factor is between 20 and 560. The Lorentz factor is consistent with the prediction of the inner vacuum gap model. Such high-energy loss factors suggest significant energy loss for secondary particles at altitudes of a few tens to hundreds of kilometers.

Abstract:The successes and shortcomings of the magnetic dipole emission model of pulsars are reviewed and a modification of the model presented. A power-law relation is found statistically between the modifying factor and the time derivative of the period. The decay time scale of the modified field is greater than 108 yr, consistent with the theoretical results. The Ṗ ∼ P relation given by the modified model is Ṗ ∞ P−3, which is just the observed gradient in the empirical Ṗ ∼ P plot above the spinning-up line.

Abstract:The region in which pulsars radiate is very important to constrain pulsar emission mechanisms. A three-dimensional (3D) method to calculate emission heights is developed in this paper. As an example, radiation regions for different components at different frequencies have been calculated for PSR B2111+46. Emission components at seven frequencies are fitted with Gaussian components, then the radiation heights for emission components are calculated. We found that different emission components, even if at the same radio frequency, are radiated from different heights. This is probably a common phenomena and challenges any emission mechanisms. The inverse Compton scattering emission model for pulsar radio emission can explain these results well.

Abstract:The results of statistical analyses of the radio luminsotiy of 81 pulsars obtained in this paper appear to be in favour of the view that the radio emission originates in regions close to the light cylinder. The various statistical relations given in TABLES 1 and 2 may provide some clues on the radio emission.

Abstract:This paper develops a timing solution for the X-ray pulsar timing model without the use of the initial radio model parameters. First, we address the problem of phase ambiguities for the pre-fit residuals in the construction of pulsar timing model. To improve the estimation accuracy of the pulse time of arrival (TOA), we have deduced the general form of test statistics in Fourier transform, and discussed their estimation performances. Meanwhile, a fast maximum likelihood (FML) technique is presented to estimate the pulse TOA, which outperforms cross correlation (CC) estimator and exhibits a performance comparable with maximum likelihood (ML) estimator in spite of a much less reduced computational complexity. Depending on the strategy of the difference minimum of pre-fit residuals, we present an effective forced phase-connected technique to achieve initial model parameters. Then, we use the observations with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) and X-ray pulsar navigation-I (XPNAV-1) satellites for experimental studies, and discuss main differences for the root mean square (RMS) residuals calculated with the X-ray and radio ephemerides. Finally, a chi-square value (CSV) of pulse profiles is presented as a complementary indicator to the RMS residuals for evaluating the model parameters. The results show that the proposed timing solution is valid and effective, and the obtained model parameters can be a reasonable alternative to the radio ephemeris.

Abstract:It is found that pulsar radiation altitude ratios between different radio frequencies are weak-dependent on the inclination angle α. This is proved via series expansion techniques and illustrated by using pulsar examples of PSR B0329+54, B1508+55, B2016+28, B1133+16, and B2319+60. It is emphasized that this α-weak-dependent radiation altitude ratio offers a good tool to test pulsar radiation models. We use the measured altitude ratios to constrain the parameter space for the Ruderman–Sutherland model and the inverse Compton scattering model. It is found that the Ruderman–Sutherland model is not compatible with the measured altitude ratios, while the results are compatible with the inverse Compton scattering model. The potential possible applications of this method in studying pulsar timing and in studying pulsar high energy radiation are also discussed.
On modeling and denoising of X-ray pulsars profile

Abstract:The pulsar profile,which is the key measurements of the pulsar navigation,is an important physical property of the pulsar.For in-depth study of the theoretical properties of the pulsar profile,the mathematical models of the standard pulsar profile and of the observed pulsar profile were established.The Crab Nebula profile function was fitted using the exponential function and the crab nebula standard pulsar profile was simulated using the profile function.Through the simulation of non-homogeneous Poisson random shooting experiment,the value of the photons TOA(time of arrival) was obtained,and the observed pulsar profile of the Crab Nebula was simulated.The simulation results show that the model can well describe the pulsar profile of the sky survey.The observed pulsar profile which was comprised of the profile and the noise was denoised based on wavelet threshold denoising method.Compared with the wavelet thresholding denoising method,through the numerical analysis,the GCV has a better denoising effect for the observed pulsar profiles.

Abstract:We review the recent advances in the pulsar high-energy $\gamma$-ray observation and the electrodynamics of the pulsar magnetospheres from the early vacuum model to the recent plasma-filled models by the numerical simulations. The numerical simulations have made the significant progresses toward the self-consistent modeling of the plasma-filled magnetosphere by including the particle acceleration and radiation. The current numerical simulations confirm a near force-free magnetosphere with the particle acceleration in the separatrix near the light cylinder and the current sheet outside the light cylinder, which can provide a good match to the recent high-energy $\gamma$-ray observations. The modeling of the combined multi-wavelength light curves, spectra, and polarization are expected to provide a stronger constrain on the geometry of the magnetic field lines, the location of the particle acceleration and the emission region, and the emission mechanism in the pulsar magnetospheres.

Abstract:X-ray can’t be directly observed at laboratory due to the absorption of atmosphere. Furthermore, observation at space consumes a great deal of financial and material resources and is highly risky. Therefore, simulation data of X-ray pulsar is of great importance, whereas the current simulation method can only generate X-ray signals of constant period at the Solar System Barycenter (SSB), without considering the slow varying property of pulsar period and the large scale space-time effects. This paper proposes a new simulation method for X-ray pulsar signal. First, the arrival phase of the next photon at the SSB is recursively calculated according to the phase of the previous photon. Next, seek the pulsar ephemeris to obtain the phase evolution model of the current time. Then, transform the arrival phase of the photon to its arrival time at the SSB using the obtained phase evolution model. Subsequently, utilizing the solar system ephemeris and orbital parameters of the spacecraft, the arrival time of the corresponding photon at the spacecraft can be acquired by an iterative algorithm. Simulation results show the validity of the proposed methods. The simulation data of the proposed method includes the slow varying property of pulsar period and the large scale space-time effects, also is very similar to the RXTE observation data. Thus the proposed method can be applied to the validation of all the algorithms needed in the practical navigation, such as profile integrating and large scale time transformation.
