Abstract:In this paper, we use Aleksandrov's reflection principle to prove symmetry of solutions to F(∇Sn2u+uI)=f(u,u2+|∇Snu|2), where u is the support function of a convex body, and F is a function of principal radii. As a corollary, alongside [Ivaki, arXiv:2307.06252], we provide an alternative proof of the uniqueness of solution to the isotropic Gaussian-Minkowski problem.

Abstract:Sum and intersection of linear subspaces in a vector space over a field are fundamental operations in linear algebra. The purpose of this survey paper is to give a comprehensive approach to the sums and intersections of two linear subspaces and their orthogonal complements in the finite-dimensional complex vector space. We shall establish a variety of closed-form formulas for representing the direct sum decompositions of the m-dimensional complex column vector space 𝔺m with respect to a pair of given linear subspaces 𝒨 and 𝒩 and their operations, and use them to derive a huge amount of decomposition identities for matrix expressions composed by a pair of orthogonal projectors onto the linear subspaces. As applications, we give matrix representation for the orthogonal projectors onto the intersections of a pair of linear subspaces using various matrix decomposition identities and Moore–Penrose inverses; necessary and su˚cient conditions for two linear subspaces to be in generic position; characterization of the commutativity of a pair of orthogonal projectors; necessary and su˚cient conditions for equalities and inequalities for a pair of subspaces to hold; equalities and inequalities for norms of a pair of orthogonal projectors and their operations; as well as a collection of characterizations of EP-matrix.

Abstract:A set of lines through the origin is called equiangular if every pair of lines defines the same angle, and the maximum size of an equiangular set of lines in Rn$$\mathbb {R}^n$$ was studied extensively for the last 70 years. In this paper, we study analogous questions for k-dimensional subspaces. We discuss natural ways of defining the angle between k-dimensional subspaces and correspondingly study the maximum size of an equiangular set of k-dimensional subspaces in Rn$$\mathbb {R}^n$$. Our bounds extend and improve a result of Blokhuis.

Abstract:Prof PENG Li-zhong,et al. had defined the cross product of two vectors in 7-dimensional space, and had proved that any two 7-dimensional vectors are parallel if and only if their cross product equals zero. However, their proof makes use of computer programs. By using the Cauchy-Schwarz in- equality and the properties of octonions, we give an elementary proof of it.

Abstract:We extend the row-sufficiency and column-sufficiency of a linear transformation from ℝ^n to the setting of Euclidean Jordan algebras. For linear complementarity problems over symmetric cones, we show that the column-sufficiency along with Cross Commutative property is equivalent to the convexity of the solution set, while the row-sufficiency is necessary for the existence of solutions under some conditions.

Abstract:Let D={{0},K,L,M,X} be a strongly double triangle subspace lattice on a non-zero complex reflexive Banach space X, which means that at least one of three sums K+L, L+M and M+K is closed. It is proved that a non-zero element S of AlgD is single in the sense that for any A,B∈AlgD, either AS=0 or SB=0 whenever ASB=0, if and only if S is of rank two. We also show that every algebraic isomorphism between two strongly double triangle subspace lattice algebras is quasi-spatial.

Abstract:The maximal dimension of commutative subspaces of $M_n(\mathbb{C})$ is known. So is the structure of such a subspace when the maximal dimension is achieved. We consider extensions of these results and ask the following natural questions: If $V$ is a subspace of $M_n(\mathbb{C})$ and $k$ is an integer less than $n$, such that for every pair $A$ and $B$ of members of $V$, the rank of the commutator $AB - BA$ is at most $k$, then how large can the dimension of $V$ be? If this maximum is achieved, can we determine the structure of $V$? We answer the first question. We also propose a conjecture on the second question which implies, in particular, that such a subspace $V$ has to be an algebra, just as in the known case of $k = 0$. We prove the proposed structure of $V$ if it is already assumed to be an algebra.

Abstract:To study orthogonal arrays and signed orthogonal arrays, Ray-Chaudhuri and Singhi (1988 and 1994) considered some module spaces. Here, using a linear algebraic approach we define an inclusion matrix and find its rank. In the special case of Latin squares we show that there is a straightforward algorithm for generating a basis for this matrix using the so-called intercalates. We also extend this last idea.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that the world of near-vector spaces allows us to work with non-linear problems and yet, gives access to most of the tools linear algebra has to offer. We establish some fundamental results for near-vector spaces toward extending classical linear algebra to near-linear algebra. In the present paper, we finalize the algebraic proof that any non-empty $F$-subspace stable under addition and scalar multiplication is an $F$-subspace. We demonstrate that any quotient of a near-vector space by an $F$-subspace is a near-vector space and the First Isomorphism Theorem for near-vector spaces. In doing this, we obtain fundamental descriptions of the span. Defining linear independence outside the quasi-kernel, we prove that near-vector spaces are characterized in terms of the existence of a scalar basis, and we obtain a new important notion of basis.

Abstract:Based on the success of a well-known method for solving higher order linear differential equations, a study of two of the most important mathematical features of that method, viz. the null spaces and commutativity of the product of unbounded linear operators on a Hilbert space is carried out. A principle is proved describing solutions for the product of such operators in terms of the solutions for each of the factors when the null spaces of those factors satisfy a certain geometric relation to one another. Another geometric principle equating commutativity of a closed densely defined operator and a projection to stability of the range of the projection under the closed operator is proved.

Abstract:The article deals with the presentation of some results obtained in the study of algebraic equations with complex coefficients from a complex variable in a unitary space. In the orthonormal basis, two vectors are introduced, which are called the vector of root and the vector of coefficients of an algebraic polynomial. With the help of these vectors, an algebraic polynomial is represented as a scalar product of them in an orthonormal basis. The criterion of linear independence of a set of root vectors is formulated and proved. A Theorem is formulated and proved that the maximum number of simple roots of an algebraic polynomial is one less than the dimension of a unitary space. A generalization of Vieta’s Theorem is obtained and new formulas connecting the coefficients of an algebraic polynomial with its roots are derived. The general case of an algebraic polynomial is considered, when some of its coefficients may be equal to zero. Two orthogonal vector systems from combinations of coefficients of an algebraic polynomial are introduced. Their properties have been studied. The shortest algebraic proof of the fundamental Theorem of algebra among the known proofs is given, which does not go beyond the concepts of the algebra of polynomials and uses the scalar product of vectors in a unitary space, as well as one property of a two-place predicate from mathematical logic. The results of this work can also be used in the educational process in the algebra course.

Abstract:In this paper, we solve a classical counting problem for non-degenerate quadratic forms defined on a vector space in odd characteristic; given a subspace $\pi$, we determine the number of non-singular subspaces that are trivially intersecting with $\pi$ and span a non-singular subspace with $\pi$. Lower bounds for the quantity of such pairs where $\pi$ is non-singular were first studied in `Glasby, Niemeyer, Praeger (Finite Fields Appl., 2022)', which was later improved for even-dimensional subspaces in `Glasby, Ihringer, Mattheus (Des. Codes Cryptogr., 2023)' and generalised in `Glasby, Niemeyer, Praeger (Linear Algebra Appl., 2022)'. The explicit formulae, which allow us to give the exact proportion and improve the known lower bounds were derived in the symplectic and Hermitian case in `De Boeck and Van de Voorde (Linear Algebra Appl. 2024)'. This paper deals with the more complicated quadratic case.

Abstract:Assume that two subspaces F and G of a unitary space are defined as the ranges (or null spaces) of given rectangular matrices A and B. Accurate numerical methods are developed for computing the principal angles and orthogonal sets of principal vectors and . An important application in statistics is computing the canonical correlations between two sets of variates. A perturbation analysis shows that the condition number for essentially is , where denotes the condition number of a matrix. The algorithms are based on a preliminary QR-factorization of A and B (or and ), for which either the method of Householder transformations (HT) or the modified Gram-Schmidt method (MGS) is used. Abstract:Given two tuples of subspaces, can you tell whether the tuples are isomorphic? We develop theory and algorithms to address this fundamental question. We focus on isomorphisms in which the ambient vector space is acted on by either a unitary group or general linear group. If isomorphism also allows permutations of the subspaces, then the problem is at least as hard as graph isomorphism. Otherwise, we provide a variety of polynomial-time algorithms with Matlab implementations to test for isomorphism.
