Abstract:The ecological problem of living environment should be explored to the city extension. Urban design is working at control on the physical form and environments of a town and managing its multi systems. Accordingly, it is with great necessity to emphasize the operation of ecological compensation through out the whole process of urban design. It is especially demanded in the coastal lowland cities in China, which are developing most quickly and breaking the balance of nature most seriously. This paper tries to study four dominating factors (landscape, water system, green space, buildings) of ecological control and compensation in urban design through a serious of urban design projects in Lincheng New Town with consideration of the ecological character of coastal cities.

Abstract:Hangzhou is the city of "five water co-existence", which comprises the Qiantang River, West Lake, the Grand Canal, East Sea, and West Brook. Water is the root and the soul of Hangzhou. Under the new urban form, Hangzhou raised the new construction strategy of aquatic area environment,which transformed from the"five water coexist"to"five water co-lead"and guide the development and construction about space form of eco-city. In a series of initiatives, the"Integrated Regulation and Protected Development of Urban River Project"is the largest water system construction project by far in Hangzhou, which started form 2007. It is a positive significance to read the works, which can help us to understand the characteristics of eco-city construction in Hangzhou, and rich the theoretical study about space form of eco-city in China.

Abstract:Urban waterfronts are fascinating places,exhibiting both natural charm,usefulness for a vast array of human activities,as well as a rich heritage that generated significant tourist interest in some areas.On review of the waterfront development studies and urban development research both home and abroad,this article argues that a strong trend of urban waterfront development is recreation oriented,rather than business centered.This trend is in accordance with the humanist thinking among development paradigms.Thus,the authors of this study proposed the idea of urban waterfront recreational business district(RBD).Thirteen sites across the world were examined with field trip by at least one of the authors.The researchers summarized six issues that apply to the domestic waterfront RBD planning and development,which shares some commonality with China.

Abstract:To address current ecological issues and a lack of historical preservation in Beijing's waterfront, it has become necessary to establish an urban design project that optimizes these aspects. This study focuses on "Beijing's Waterfront Overall Urban Design," a project that integrates government requirements with Beijing's waterfront urban design characteristics and problems to establish an urban layer system from two dimensions: historical and ecological. It explores how the urban layer system can be applied to Beijing's overall waterfront urban design, from investigation to evaluation, analysis, visualization, and strategy development. First, an urban layer system for Beijing's waterfront was established from a historical perspective, based on urban setting and construction stages and space utilization, referring to the literature and field surveys. The evolution of urban layers of waterbodies, the water–city relationship, and water functions was systematically analyzed. Second, an urban layer system was established for the ecological dimension of Beijing's waterfront based on a literature review, expert interviews, and analytic hierarchy process methods. It included four urban layers: waterbody, greening, shoreline, and ecological function. The quality of the ecological urban design of 54 waterfront reaches in Beijing was evaluated using questionnaires and field surveys. Third, a series of urban layer maps was generated using the mapping method. Finally, urban design strategies were developed based on the combined historical and ecological characteristics and problems of Beijing's waterfront. The results of this study and the concept of an urban layer system for waterfront urban design can benefit waterfront urban design projects and future studies.

Abstract:The current transformation of the countryside in the rural hinterland of Chinese city regions faces challenges in conserving an extensive architectural and landscape heritage. The villages situated in these regions represent the historical core of metropolitan areas. By examining the hinterland territories, we can readily recognize the features of the Chinese urban-rural continuum that G. W. Skinners has defined in his studies spanning from the 1940s to the 1970s on rural marketing networks, cities, and the hierarchy of the local system. These local systems present a morphology that continually adapts to geographical and cultural contexts, offering rich architectural and rural urbanism solutions that seamlessly harmonize the urban and rural functions. Today, this part of the settlement is extremely vulnerable to the pressure of urban expansion as towns evolve into cities and cities transform into metropolitan regions. The conventional top-down planning practice in these areas lacks innovative tools capable of integrating both “urban” and “rural” features simultaneously. Scholars such as M. Davis and G. Guldin have recognized the Chinese hybrid rural-urban settlement as a potentially “new form of settlement for humanity” (Guldin, 1997). In this article, we present a holistic design approach aimed at shaping this hybrid settlement into a “green city,” applying the model we first used in 2010 – 2013 in Huiyang in the Pearl River Delta, a region characterized by Hakka villages territorial system, to two other cases in city regions: Pidu in the Chengdu metropolitan area and Kandun in the Ningbo metropolitan area. These regions are characterized by their respective Lin Pan and Seawalls territorial systems, which we have more recently studied. The aim of the paper is to illustrate how drawing inspiration from local countryside architecture and rural urbanism enables the development of individual planning solutions as an alternative to the current planning practice in peri-urban rural areas, which tends to homogenize countryside landscapes to urban blocks.

Abstract:This paper presents the compound concept of "Blue Stream Activation",builds the planning framework of the ecological landscape in Harbin Hejiagou Basin,and establishes the regional development strategy..At the level of integrative function,it proposes six compound functions:sewage treatment,ecological restoration,waterfront opening,waterfront residential area,waterfront industries,and waterfront tourism.At the level of river basin space,it proposes the mode of plate division,i.e.,nine major plates formed by their geographic regions,which can be easily implemented by stages and gradually improved.At the level of waterfront landscape,it puts forward the concept of beam-like and radiation-type landscape zone.The activation of the "Blue Stream" links up the old and new urban structure,inherits the cultural context,integrates the industrial development,and enhances the visual quality of urban space.Thus it is an effective and win-win strategy in urban planning.
