Abstract:A translation recognition task with reaction time as index was used to investigate the effect of working memory on bilingual control at the lexical level.69 participants took part in a working memory span test and a translation recognition experiment.The data show that translation from English to Chinese was faster than translation from Chinese to English,and that in the task of translation from English to Chinese,there was no significant difference in the performance between the high-span group and low-span group whereas in the task of translation from Chinese to English,the high-span group responded faster than the low-span group.The result is compatible with the predictions of the IC model,showing that bilingual control at the lexical level is constrained by cognitive resources,which might have some implications for the construction of bilingual processing models.Methods that might enhance the efficiency of bilingual control are also discussed.
