Abstract:The strong time variability of multipath channels in high-mobility scenarios causes the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signal to suffer from serious inter-carrier interference (ICI) and inter-symbol interference (ISI), resulting in performance degradation. Such channels are sparse in both delay and Doppler domains, enabling the transmission of the or-thogonal time frequency space (OTFS) signal efficiently expressed in the delay-Doppler (DD) domain. Thus, OTFS is regarded as a prospective modulation technique against time-varying channel. Quite a few works in OTFS only consider simple channels with integer delay in the unit of the sampling period and integer Doppler in the unit of frame frequency. For practical channel, the existing fractional delay and Doppler of the rapidly time-varying channel reduce the sparsity of the channel response and produce distinct sidelobes, leading to inter-Doppler interference (IDI) and ISI. In this paper, an improved fractional delay filter (FDF) is designed to approximate the effect of fractional delay. Based on this, an accurate signal model that reflects the impact of time-varying channel on data bits is derived. Classical zero-forcing (ZF) and minimum mean square error (MMSE) equalization algorithms are used, assuming the channel is known or estimated perfectly. Finally, instead of a simple statistical channel, we use ray-tracing (RT) to simulate the rapidly time-varying multipath channel for high-mobility scenes, with which the performance of OTFS and OFDM are simulated and compared.
