Abstract:A series of high-resolution CFD simulations as well as experiments were performed to investigate flow and mass transfer of liquid-liquid phases in single and double T-shaped micro-channel networks.Two stable flow patterns were observed,namely slug flow and parallel flow.Liquid-liquid mass transfer rates were measured based on distribution of acetic acid in water and toluene system.Moreover,volume of fluid model(VOF)was used to simulate the generation and development of slug flow and predict slug length.Simulation results agreed well with experimental data.At the same residence time,mass transfer coefficients and extraction efficiency were higher in the double T-mixer than the single one.Tree-shaped networks containing multi-stage T-shaped micro-channel greatly enhanced liquid-liquid mass transfer in micro-channels,and this kind of network was a powerful micro-extraction configuration.
Influence of Particulate Thermophoresis on Convection Heat and Mass Transfer in a Slip Flow of a Viscoelasticity-Based Micropolar Fluid

Abstract:We focus on the intriguing particulate thermophoresis characterized by multi-dependent Soret number in a shear flow of a viscoelasticity-based micropolar fluid (VMF) over a stretching sheet in the existence of the slip condition. The multi-dependent Soret number involving the temperature field and micro-particle size factors is introduced to analyze the critical role of the particulate thermophoresis on the temperature and concentration profiles of a VMF. Such procedure being significant for convection heat and mass transfer has never yet been considered in the transport system of such non-Newtonian fluids. Theoretically, we find the larger particles more susceptible to the actuation of temperature gradient. The local Sherwood number increases linearly with the bulk temperature difference, while the thickness of the concentration boundary layer are decreased. We also find that the flow relaxation and slip behavior can give rise to the obvious reduction of local Nusselt number and Sherwood number in different ways. Moreover, these two behaviors are found to be inherently divergent in varying the local skin friction. A power law expression can fit well the dependence of the local skin friction on the slip parameter. The practical routes of heat and mass transfer in the complex fluids will be implemented by tuning the various physical parameters presented in this paper. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
The Effect of Temperature Distribution on the Mass Species Transport in Micro-Channels Driven by Electroosmosis

Abstract:The temperature-dependent Poisson-Boltzmann equation, momentum equation and the mass transport equation in a rectangular micro-channel flow driven by electroosmosis were derived firstly. Then these equations were solved numerically through the finite difference method. The effects of different temperature distributions on the axial velocity profile, the maximum of the species concentration, the symmetry of the species distribution and the width of sample band were analyzed. The results show that the maximum of the species concentration decreases with increasing of time for different uniform temperatures. The existence of lateral, radial and especially axial temperature gradient makes the species diffuse slowly, and narrows the sample band. The best way of making the sample band transport and separate effectively is forcing a temperature gradient along the axial direction.

Abstract:The flow properties in microtubes, such as velocity profiles and pressure distributions, are different from those in macrotubes. We attribute this phenomenon to the molecular interactions between the solid wall and inner liquid. The apparent viscosity, which takes into consideration the molecular interactions, is introduced in the present study and the Navier-Stokes equations are solved. Water is adopted in the calculation. For the hydrophilic material wall, the water is more like to adhere to the wall. The velocity near the wall is smaller than that of conventional theory, while the centerline velocity and pressure gradients are much larger. Such a phenomenon becomes much more obvious with the decrease in tube diameter.

Abstract:Abstract Background: The study of blood flow in vessels is always crucial to understand cardiovascular diseases such as arrhythmias, coronary artery disease and deep vein thrombosis. A viscoelastic fluid in a microchannel is modeled for the blood flow study. Methods: In this paper, we modeled the blood flow through a viscoelastic fluid in a microfluidic channel. The flow properties, especially the flow pattern and transient mixing of two fluid streams in a T-shaped microchannel, are experimentally studied. Results: It was found that the viscoelastic fluid has a transiently unstable flow pattern compared to the normal Newtonian fluid, and the mixing is also increased due to its elastic property. Similar to the pulsatile blood flow, the fluid is driven under a periodically pulsed stimulus, and the flow pattern and transient mixing are compared at different flow rates and driving period conditions. Conclusions: The integration of microfluidic technology with the blood flow research could provide a new approach to understand the related disease mechanism, which can also be used to analyze the drug mixing and delivery in the blood flow.

Abstract:Controllable coalescence of multiple droplets is an important part of droplet manipulation, which is used to add samples to existing droplets, complete multi-step biological and chemical reactions inside droplet. It is of great importance to study the internal circulation characteristics for enhancing heat and mass transfer inside droplets. In this paper, microchannel experiments and volume of fluid method are conducted, and the evolution process of droplet coalescence is analyzed. The velocity distribution inside droplet is used as the main index to study the internal circulation characteristics under different surface velocities conditions. A characterization method of internal circulation strength based on central radial velocity and axial velocity inside the droplet is proposed, which can characterize the internal circulation region inside droplet caused by shearing action of microchannel wall of continuous phase. Results show that with the decrease of droplet length, the velocity distribution inside the droplet changes from being dominated by shearing action of microchannel wall to shearing action of continuous phase. In the process of droplet coalescence, there is a convective trend in the contact area between two droplets, and the maximum radial and axial velocities reach 3.5 times and 7.5 times of the droplet surface velocity respectively. This work can provide a reference for improving droplet control accurancy and mixing efficiency.

Abstract:This work is a fundamental study on the movement of various sized micro-liter droplets on a surface subjected to temperature gradients. The histories of droplet movement are recorded by high-speed CCD camera and are simulated by numerical methods based on first principle equations. The agreement between computations and experimental observations are obtained. The study indicates that temperature gradients, the change of dynamic receding/advancing contact angles across the droplets, and the flowfields inside the droplet are the key parameters determining the moving behavior of the micro-droplet driven by Marangoni and capillary effects.

Abstract:The capillary hysteresis is an important behavior of liquid-unsaturated porous media. The hysteresis effects on the heat and mass transfer are evident in action in many important cases. The present paper introduces the minimum driving gradient concept into the analytical studies on the transport phenomena in unsaturated wet porous media. The individual phase equations and total saturation equation of mass transfer, and the energy equation for temperature profiles are derived. A hysteretic criterion is introduced with discussions. It is believed that the new efforts on the subject will promote the progress in all the relevant respects of theories and applications.

Abstract:Mass transfer performance of gas–liquid two-phase flow at microscale is the basis of application of microreactor in gas–liquid reaction systems. At present, few researches on the mass transfer property of annular flow have been reported. Therefore, the mass transfer mechanism and relationship of gas–liquid annular flow in a microfluidic cross-junction device are studied in the present study. We find that the main factors, i.e. , flow pattern, liquid film thickness, liquid hydraulic retention time, phase interface fluctuation, and gas flow vorticity, which influence the flow mass transfer property, are directly affected both by gas and liquid flow velocities. But the influences of gas and liquid velocities on different mass transfer influencing factors are different. Thereout, the fitting relationships between gas and liquid flow velocities and mass transfer influencing factors are established. By comparing the results from calculations using fitting equations and simulations, it shows that the fitting equations have relatively high degrees of accuracy. Finally, the Pareto front, namely the Pareto optimal solution set, of gas and liquid velocity conditions for the best flow mass transfer property is obtained using the method of multi-objective particle swarm optimization. It is proved that the mass transfer property of the gas–liquid two-phase flow can be obviously enhanced under the guidance of the obtained Pareto optimal solution set through experimental verification. Abstract:The nanoscale effects of solid–fluid molecular interactions on the nanoconfined fluid flow have received increasing attention in science and engineering. Additionally, due to the complex microstructures of porous media, the nanoconfined fluid flow behaviors will be more complicated. In this paper, we comprehensively use theoretical analysis and lattice Boltzmann simulations with a new slip curved boundary condition to study the microstructures and molecular interaction effects on nanoconfined water flow. The viscous dissipation rate caused by the entrance effect (streamlines bending), and the nanoscale effects of the slip boundary and the varying interfacial water viscosity caused by molecular interactions are considered and discussed. The results show that the entrance viscous dissipation rate can result in the negative effects near the pore entrance and exit because of the bending streamlines. The increasing entrance viscous dissipation rate can make the enhancement factor approach to 1 by weakening the nanoscale effects. With an increasing contact angle, the entrance viscous dissipation rate causes the main pressure drop and gradually dominates the overall water flow. As nanoscale effects enhance the water flow capacity, the enhancement factor decreases to near 1 with an increasing porous media size because of the decreasing nanoscale effects. As nanoscale effects weaken the water flow capacity, due to the different decreasing effects of the slip length and interfacial water viscosity, the enhancement factor decreases first and then increases to near 1. Our work can guide for studying the oil/water flow in unconventional reservoirs and provide microscopic basics to design artificial nanopores with excellent performance.

Abstract:Viscous coupling effect on pore-scale flow capacity and its impact on macroscopic flow properties in porous media remain subjects of ongoing debate. This study employs the Stokes equation in conjunction with the zero-velocity interface and continuity interface to investigate viscous coupling effect during two-phase flow through a square capillary tube. Our findings substantiate the significance of the viscous coupling effect in angular pore multiphase flows. Enhanced fluid conductance is linked to fluid viscosity ratios, contact angles, and wetting-film lengths at the pore scale. Proposing a novel upscaling approach, we formulate hydraulic conductance in a square capillary tube for multiphase flows by incorporating a viscous coupling term, and its validation is accomplished through comparison with results from lattice Boltzmann method simulations. Our scaling model predicts hydraulic conductance with a mean relative error of less than 1%, outperforming prior viscous coupling models with errors reaching up to 19%. The derived scaling model, incorporating the viscous coupling effect, holds potential for integration within pore-network models, offering an efficient and precise simulation method for characterizing two-phase flow through porous media at a representative scale.

Abstract:The effect of viscous dissipation, thermal dispersion, particle diameters andvariable properties of oil on convection heat transfer are investigatednumerically using a thermal non-equilibrium model in comparison with experimentaldata in this paper. It is shown that under practical conditions the influence ofviscous dissipation on the convection heat transfer is small. Fluid temperatureon the bottom part of the channel is higher than in the core region of thechannel when the lower plate is adiabatic due to the effect of viscousdissipation. The variation of the thermal physical properties of oil has aprofound influence on the convection heat transfer coefficient, whichincreases as the heat flux increases

Abstract:This investigation aims to introduce a new solution with aid of numerical methods to the blood flow of Carreau–Yasuda fluid through a microvessel. Swimming of gyrotactic microorganisms with nanoparticles is considered. A resulting system of partial differential equations is simplified by the meaning of low Reynolds number and long wavelength. This system of partial differential equations was formulated and transformed mathematically using new theories of differential transform method. Variable nonndimensional physical parameters effects, such as numbers of bioconvection Peclet and bioconvection Rayleigh, and so forth on velocity, temperature, and concentration distribution as well as oxytactic microorganism and oxygen concentration profiles are studied. All results are constructed in two cases of viscosity on the same figure, one of them in the case of variable parameters and the other in constant parameters. The existing study assured that the microorganism density in the direction near to the hypoxic tumor tissues regions grows with a rise in oxygen concentrations and the blood viscosity diminutions.

Abstract:Mass transfer characteristics of liquid-liquid Taylor flow with various fluid pairs are investigated, in order to reveal the viscous effects of the fluids. The concentration pattern in continuous slugs, mass transfer time and mass transfer coefficient are discussed and analyzed. Several different concentration patterns originated from recirculation are observed at both straight channels and curved bends, respectively. It is shown that the mass transfer coefficient (Ka and K) can increase with the increase in the viscosity of the continuous phase at large flow rates, which is explained by the increased contribution of the film at the lateral droplet side and its exchange with the bulk slug. Based on the dominance of different parts (i.e., film, cap), three mass transfer regimes are distinguished. Correlations for each regime, which covers a wide range of fluid viscosity of 0.89-45.6 mPa.s, are developed to predict the mass transfer coefficient. (c) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Analogy between heat and mass transfer leads to new oxygen transport equations in vascularized biological tissues

Abstract:Mathematical modeling of oxygen transport in living tissues has been an important approach for quantitatively understanding the physiological events. In a vascularized biological tissue, blood flow plays an important role in the local transport of oxygen, nutrients, pharmaceuticals, waste products and heat through the body. However, most of the existing oxygen transport models take few considerations of the anatomical structure. Therefore, disagreements among the theoretical predictions and the experimental measurements are common in those studies. This is because geometrical irregularity of the vascular structure remained to be a major obstacle for the accurate modeling. In fact, it has long been a desirable objective to establish a quantitative and generalized model, which is mathematically tractable in the region of interest and considering the detailed anatomical vascular geometry. In this paper, following the theoretical strategy through analogy between the heat and mass transport, the well-established Pennes equation, Chen-Holmes equation, and Weinbaum-Jiji (W-J) equation, etc. were implemented to develop the basic equations for characterizing the oxygen transport inside a vascularized tissue. These models have collectively included the contributions of the vascular geometry and the blood flow condition. As an illustration, predictions using the new model from W-J equation on several typical oxygen transfer problems were discussed. The theoretical results were applied to interpret some previous experimental observations. Further, uncertainties for the predicted oxygen concentrations of tissues due to approximate parameters and vascular structures were analyzed based on developing a generalized equation. Contributions from each of the thermal parameters such as diffusion coefficient, blood perfusion rate, and oxygen consumption rate of the tissues etc. can all be attributed to a single source term, which would make the model much convenient for practical use. The theoretical route proposed in this paper may provide a feasible way to comprehensively characterize the oxygen transport behaviors in living tissues with complex vasculature. Abstract:Interphase mass transfer is an important solute transport process in two-phase flow in porous media. During two-phase flow, hydrodynamically stagnant and flowing zones are formed, with the stagnant ones being adjacent to the interfaces through which the interphase mass transfer happens. Due to the existence of these stagnant zones in the vicinity of the interface, the mass transfer coefficient decreases to a certain extent. There seems to be a phenomenological correlation between the mass transfer coefficient and the extent of the stagnant zone which, however, is not yet fully understood. In this study, the phase-field method-based continuous species transfer model is applied to simulate the interphase mass transfer of a dissolved species from the immobile, residual, non-aqueous phase liquid (NAPL) to the flowing aqueous phase. Both scenarios, this of a simple cavity and this of a porous medium, are investigated. The effects of flow rates on the mass transfer coefficient are significantly reduced when the stagnant zone and the diffusion length are larger. It is found that the stagnant zone saturation can be a proxy of the overall diffusion length of the terminal menisci in the porous medium system. The early-stage mass transfer coefficient continuously decreases due to the depletion of the solute in the small NAPL clusters that are in direct contact with the flowing water. The long-term mass transfer mainly happens on the interfaces associated with large NAPL clusters with larger diffusion lengths, and the mass transfer coefficient is mainly determined by the stagnant zone saturation.

Abstract:The effect of total flow rate on membrane dispersion extraction efficiency was studied for liquid-liquid micromixing systems.Mass transfer coefficient and mass transfer rate were obtained from the experimental results for the micromixing process. In order to predict mass transfer performance of the micromixing process, some traditional mathematical models were tested.Total and individual mass transfer coefficients were calculated, and compared with the experimental results. The results showed that main factors affecting mass transfer coefficients were residence time and droplets size, and mass transfer coefficients increased with the reduction of residence time.Mass transfer coefficients in the micromixing process could reach as much as 1.2×10 -4 m·s -1,which was about 10—100 times higher than that in a traditional column extraction process. The mass transfer performance in the micromixing process could be predicted neither with the model in which mass transfer resistance of any one phase was ignored, nor with the simplified average equations.So mass transfer performance in the micromixing process was much different from the traditional column extraction process.The authors’results showed that mass transfer coefficients could be predicted with the full traditional two-phase resistance model by considering both steady and non-steady states, and the calculated values were in good agreement with the experimental values.
Numerical Analysis of Blood Flow Through Stenosed Microvessels Using a Multi-Phase Model

Abstract:Blood flow in arterioles have attracted considerable research attention due to their clinical implications. However, the fluid structure interaction between red blood cells and plasma in the blood poses formidable difficulty to the computational efforts. In this contribution, we seek to represent the red blood cells in the blood as a continuous non-Newtonian phase and construct a multi-phase model for the blood flow in microvessels. The methods are presented and validated using a channel with sudden expansion. And the resulting blood flow inside a stenosed microvessel is investigated at different inlet velocity amplitudes and hematocrits. It is show that the increase of both inlet velocity amplitude and inlet hematocrit leads to longer and thicker cell-rich layer downstream the stenosis. Besides, it is found that the maximum values of wall shear stress scales up with inlet velocity amplitudes and hematocrits. These results show the validity of the proposed computational model and provide helpful insights into blood flow behaviors inside stenosed vessels.
Effect of Reversible Work and Viscous Dissipation on Gas Flow Characteristics in a Microtube

Abstract:Study of characteristics of microscale momentum transfer is becoming an important subject of recent investigation. Some factors neglected in macrotubes will play more prominent parts for fluid flow in microtubes due to smaller dimension. The method of order of magnitude estimate and numerical simulation was used to investigate the effect of reversible work and viscous dissipation on the adiabatic gas flow characteristics in a microtube. It is found that the reversible work and vicious dissipation slow down the increase of Ma and the pressure drop along the tube, but have little effect on the characteristics of frictional resistance. The product of local Fanning friction factor C f and Re for laminar gas flow in a microtube is no longer a constant of 16, but increases with increasing local Ma .

Abstract:Mass transfer performance is markedly improved in microchannels compared with traditional gas-liquid chemical devices. The residence time is a crucial parameter for determining the mass transfer performance. However, investigation of the residence time in gas-liquid absorption systems remains insufficient, especially in viscous gas-liquid systems with obvious flow non-uniformity between the two phases. Herein, the microscale gas-liquid flow and mass transfer performance in viscous liquids (9.0-55.4 mPa center dot s) based on the true residence time are investigated. Owing to the broad operating conditions of the gas-liquid flow ratio (0.2-6.7), both Taylor flow and bubbly flow patterns were observed. The results show that the bubble velocity gradually decreases to the minimum value with increasing flow distance in the Taylor flow pattern owing to gas absorption. Subsequently, bubble velocity gradually increases under the bubbly flow pattern, and the dominant factor of bubble velocity is pointed out. The true bubble residence time initially increases and then gradually decreases compared to the superficial time as the gas holdup decreases, based on the superficial velocity using the initial flow rates. The transition point occurs at a gas holdup of 0.2. In addition, the turning point of the different rules of the pressure drop occurs at a gas holdup of 0.5. Finally, a new dimensionless equation was proposed to predict the mass transfer coefficient and reveal the equation differences between low-and high-viscosity liquids. This work enriches the understanding of microflow characteristics and mass transfer performance in viscous solutions and provides a reliable guide for microreactor design.
