Abstract:Great progress has been made in regard of mechanism, etiological diagnosis and treatment of chronic cough since the beginning of the 20th century, and Chinese guidelines of diagnosis, management of cough was developed. Moreover, Chinese experts also participated in the formulation of international cough guidelines. Through the promotion of the guidelines, the level of diagnosis and treatment of chronic cough has been significantly improved in China. In the future, we should strengthen the studies on the epidemiology of chronic cough, the central regulation of chronic cough, and the treatment of refractory chronic cough, and promote the cough guidelines in primary community hospitals.
[Changes in the Spectrum and Frequency of Causes for Chronic Cough: a Retrospective Analysis].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To investigate the changing patterns of the spectrum and frequency of causes for chronic cough, and to explore its clinical implications.METHODS:Nine hundred and forty patients consecutively referred to Department of Respiratory Medicine for evaluation of chronic cough between January 2004 and December 2008 were collected and divided into 5 groups by periods of 5 years. The causes of cough had been primarily evaluated according to a step-by-step protocol and confirmed by the specific therapy. The changes in spectrum and frequency of causes were retrospectively analyzed by chi2 test.RESULTS:The common causes of chronic cough were cough variant asthma (n = 437, 46%), upper airway cough syndrome/postnasal drip syndrome (n = 304, 32%), eosinophilic bronchitis (n = 87, 9%), gastroesophageal reflux-related chronic cough (n = 83, 9%), postinfectious cough (n = 60, 6%) and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors-induced cough (n = 46, 5%) in descending order. There were significant differences in the distribution and frequency of etiologies when analyzed by year (chi2 = 60.6, P = 0.0001). During a 5-year period, chronic cough due to cough variant asthma increased from 44% to 51% (chi2 = 12.8, P = 0.010), upper airway cough syndrome/postnasal drip syndrome decreased from 49% to 29% (chi2 = 20.1, P = 0.001), and gastroesophageal reflux increased from 2% to 10% (chi2 = 17.6, P = 0.002). However, chronic cough associated with eosinophilic bronchitis, postinfection and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors remained stable.CONCLUSION:The common causes of chronic cough vary with time, which may have an impact on the strategy for the management of chronic cough.

Abstract:Background: Chronic cough is a troublesome clinical problem with long-term impacts at the patient level. However, the burden of chronic cough in China is largely unknown. Thus, we performed a multicenter cross-sectional survey on the current status of chronic cough and its impact on quality of life in Guangdong, south China.Methods: Using a standardized questionnaire, we extracted and analyzed the relevant data on demographics, number of visits to a doctor, previous diagnosis, previous medications used and initial diagnosis. Cough-specific quality of life was measured by the Mandarin Chinese version of the Leicester Cough Questionnaire (LCQ-MC).Results: Of 933 patients from 13 tertiary medical centers in Guangdong, 52.2% were female, the median age was 40.0 [interquartile range (IQR), 31.0-52.0] years, and the median duration of chronic cough was 6.0 (IQR, 3.0-24.0) months. Over half (n=452, 54.0%) of the patients had visited physicians ≥3 times for cough. In terms of previous diagnosis, bronchitis (n=432, 46.5%) had been most frequently diagnosed, followed by pharyngitis (n=246, 26.5%) and asthmatic cough (n=98, 10.5%). A majority of patients with chronic cough had used antitussive agents (n=539, 58.5%), antibiotics (n=374, 40.6%) and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) (n=294, 31.9%). Among the three subscales of the LCQ-MC, we observed lower scores in the mental health domain than in the physical and social domains (both P<0.001). Additionally, lower LCQ-MC scores were found in females and patients who saw the doctor >3 times for both the total and three subscale scores (all P<0.05).Conclusions: Misdiagnosis and inappropriate treatment are prevalent in patients with chronic cough and lead to considerable antibiotic abuse. Chronic cough markedly affects suffers' quality of life, especially for women.

Abstract:Background Despite close link exists between cough severity and quality of life (QoL), whether gender difference is implied in the effect of cough on QoL has not been studied yet. This study primarily aims to investigate whether the association between cough severity and QoL is modified by gender in patients with postinfectious cough. Methods Secondary analyses were performed in 180 participants with postinfectious cough in a multisite randomized controlled trial. Baseline demographics, clinical characteristics and score of cough specific quality of life questionnaire (CQLQ) were collected. Linear regression analyses were conducted to examine gender difference in CQLQ score and the association between cough severity and CQLQ score. Results Difference between women and men was not significant in CQLQ total score in the unadjusted analysis ( P = 0.077). Women had a 2.20-point higher CQLQ total score than men (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.11–4.30; P = 0.039), after adjusting for age, cough duration, cough severity, and clinical center. Gender significantly modified the association between cough severity and CQLQ total score (coefficient 1.80, 95% CI 0.29–3.30; P = 0.020), after adjusting for age, cough duration, and study center. An increase of 1-point in cough severity was associated with a 2.55-point (95% CI 1.16–3.95) increase in CQLQ total score in women versus a 1.26-point (95% CI 0.20–2.31) increase in men ( P = 0.020). Conclusions Female sex may be associated with worse QoL than men, and women’s QoL may be more significantly impaired as cough symptom deteriorates. Gender difference should be taken into account in the clinical settings and research of cough and cough related QoL. Trial registration : Chinese Clinical Trial Registry, ChiCTRTRC12002297. Abstract:BackgroundThe frequency distributions of the etiologies of chronic cough have changed over time. This study aimed to investigate the changing etiological frequency of chronic cough in a tertiary hospital in Shanghai, China, and to explore the clinical significance.MethodsMedical records of 1,311 patients with chronic cough who visit our hospital between January 2009 and December 2016 were retrospectively reviewed. The etiologies of chronic cough were identified according to a standardized step-by-step diagnostic protocol and the changes in the etiological frequency of chronic cough over the years were using the Chi-squared (χ2) test.ResultsCough variant asthma (CVA) (449/1,311, 34.2%), gastroesophageal reflux-related chronic cough (GERC) (374/1,311, 28.5%), upper airway cough syndrome/postnasal drip syndrome (UACS/PNDs) (241/1,311, 18.4%), atopic cough (AC) (188/1,311, 14.3%), and non-asthmatic eosinophilic bronchitis (NAEB) (147/1,311, 11.2%) were the common causes of chronic cough in descending order. The post-infectious cough (PIC) (39/1,311, 3.0%) and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEI)-induced cough (25/1,311, 1.9%) were less common. During the 8-year period, the proportion of CVA (χ2=72.86, P<0.0001) and UACS/PNDs (χ2=68.80, P<0.0001) decreased, while those of NAEB (χ2=51.38, P<0.0001), GERC (χ2=55.95, P<0.0001) and AC (χ2=39.09, P<0.0001) increased.ConclusionsThe etiological frequency of chronic cough varies over time, and it may encourage the adjustment of the current diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for chronic cough.

In recent years, a great advance has been made for assessment of cough severity which includes cough scores, quality-of-life questionnaires, cough frequency monitoring and cough reflex sensitivity test. In clinical practice, a combination of these tools should be used to complement to each other.

Abstract:Chronic cough is one of the most common complaints for which patients in China seek medical attention. However, there are no nationwide data on the prevalence and socioeconomic burden of chronic cough. Although approximately 50% of Chinese men smoke, the vast majority of patients presenting for evaluation of chronic cough are never smokers. An equal sex distribution and a middle-aged predominance have been observed in the Chinese chronic cough population, despite demonstration of a higher cough reflex sensitivity in females and older patients. The role of air pollution in the distinct age and sex distribution requires further study. In terms of the etiologies of chronic cough in China, cough-variant asthma, upper airway cough syndrome, nonasthmatic eosinophilic bronchitis, and atopic cough are the most common causes, comprising 75.2% to 87.6% of cases across different regions. Chinese Guidelines for Diagnosis and Treatment of Cough were initially published in 2005, and updated in 2009 and 2016. In addition, the China Cough Coalition was established in 2016. Great progress has been made in both cough-related clinical practice and research in recent years, however, there are still challenges ahead. To facilitate optimal management of chronic cough in China, efforts promoting the dissemination and application of published guidelines will be essential, especially in community-based healthcare and in rural regions. As chronic refractory cough has been identified as a huge challenge to clinicians worldwide, continued international cooperation will be essential in optimizing evaluation and management of chronic cough.

[Validation of the Chinese version of Hull airway reflux questionnaire and its application in the evaluation of chronic cough].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To validate the effectiveness, repeatability and treatment responsiveness of the Chinese version of Hull airway reflux questionnaire (HARQ), and to determine its clinical value. METHODS:A standard Chinese version of HARQ was developed by an established translation procedure and its repeatability was assessed in a preliminary study involving 55 untreated patients with stable chronic cough. Thereafter, a total of 132 patients with chronic cough referred to our respiratory clinic were recruited into the study between May 2014 and April 2015. After their cough was evaluated with the HARQ, cough symptom score or cough reflex sensitivity to inhaled capsaicin and the correlations among them were analyzed, and the causes of chronic cough in all the patients were presumptively determined according to an established diagnostic protocol and finally confirmed with the subsequent therapy specific to the etiologies. After two weeks of effective treatment, HARQ, cough symptom score and cough reflex sensitivity to inhaled capsaicin were measured once more, and treatment responsiveness was calculated. The score of the HARQ in 132 patients with chronic cough were compared with that in 104 healthy volunteers. RESULTS:The repeatability of the Chinese version of the HARQ was validated at a week interval with the intraclass correlation coefficients of 0.96 (95%CI: 0.93-0.98, P=0.00) for total score (n=55). No correlation was found between the HARQ and cough symptom score, and the HARQ showed a weak negative correlation with cough threshold C2 (rIgC2=-0.23, P=0.01) but not with C5. The value of HARQ was significantly higher in patients with chronic cough than in healthy volunteers[20.00(14.00, 28.00) vs 4.00 (2.00, 6.00), Z=-12.89, P=0.00], but no difference of HARQ in gender or age existed in chronic cough. Although all the patients with various etiologies of chronic cough had an increased value of HARQ, cough due to gastroesophageal reflux showed the highest HARQ score among them[28.50 (25.00, 32.25) vs 18.50 (14.00, 26.25), Z=4.43, P=0.00]. After two weeks of effective treatment, the HARQ score decreased from 20.00 (14.00, 28.00) pre-treatment to 10.00 (4.25, 17.75) post-treatment (Z=-6.06, P=0.00), with 52.04% of score change ratio, 1.38 of effect side and 1.97 of standard response mean respectively. CONCLUSION:HARQ is a reliable and valid tool for the management of chronic cough with good treatment responsiveness, and may be used as an easy way to predict cough due to gastroesophageal reflux.

Abstract:Background Chronic cough is a common complaint, but there are no population-based data on its burden in China. We determined the prevalence of chronic cough and its impact on health status in adults stratified by sex, age and the diagnosis of COPD or the presence of small airway dysfunction (SAD). Methods A representative sample of 57 779 Chinese adults aged 20 years or older was recruited and pulmonary function test was measured. Chronic cough was defined as cough lasting for >3 months in each year. Quality of life was assessed by the 12-item Short Form Health Survey (SF-12), and self-reported history of hospital visits was recorded. Results Chronic cough was found in 3.6% (95% CI 3.1-4.1) of Chinese adults, 2.4% (95% CI 1.9-3.1) of those aged 20-49 years and 6.0% (95% CI 5.3-6.8) of those aged 50 years or older. Individuals with chronic cough had an impaired physical component summary (PCS) score of the SF-12 (p<0.0001) and more emergency visits (p=0.0042) and hospital admissions (p=0.0002). Furthermore, the impact of chronic cough on PCS score was more significant in those aged 50 years or older, or with COPD (p=0.0018 or 0.0002, respectively), with the impact on hospital admission being more significant in those with COPD or with SAD (p=0.0026 or 0.0065, respectively). Conclusions Chronic cough is prevalent in China and is associated with a poorer health status, especially in individuals aged 50 years or older and those with the diagnosis of COPD or SAD.

Abstract:Interstitial lung diseases associated cough is common in clinical practice.It is usually refractory, may deteriorate dyspnea and induce the complications such as spontaneous pneumothorax, syncope and chest pain, having a profound negative impact on patients′ quality of life and prognosis.Its pathogenesis involves airway inflammation, mechanical distortion of the lung, cough hypersensitivity and gastroesophageal reflux.The diagnosis requires to establish the cause-effect relationship between cough and interstitial lung diseases with the initial confirmation of interstitial lung diseases.Cough resolution depends upon the treatment of basic interstitial lung diseases, followed by the management of concomitant diseases.Antitussive drugs including neuromodulators can help to relieve cough and improve the patients′ quality of life.Individualization of the therapy is the essential strategy.
A Prospective Study on the Causes of Chronic Cough

Abstract:Objective To investigate the causes and its spectrum of chronic cough prospectively.Methods The causes of 105 patients with consecutive cough for more than eight weeks were primarily evaluated with an anatomic diagnostic protocol incorporated with induced sputum analysis and then also determined by the specific therapy.Results The causes of cough were determined in 102 of 105(97%) patients.Cough was due to cough variant asthma in 51.4% patients,postnasal drip syndrome in 26.7% patients,postviral cough in 8.5% patients,eosinophilic bronchitis in 5.7% patients,angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor-related cough in 2.9% patients and gastroesophageal reflux disease in 1.9% patients.With a specific therapy,cough disappeared within three weeks in 84% of the patients with a single cause.Conclusion Cough variant asthma and postnasal drip syndrome are among the most important causes of chronic cough.
Reliability and validity and responsiveness evaluation of the Chinese version of cough-specific quality-of-life questionnaire

Abstract:Objective To evaluate the reliability,validity and responsiveness of the Chinese version of cough-specific quality-of-life questionnaire(CQLQ).Methods A total of 86 patients coming to our hospital because of cough were evaluated using CQLQ and its reliability,validity and responsiveness were analyzed according to the results.Results The Cronbach's α coefficient and the 24 h test-retest reliability coefficient of the CQLQ were 0.935 and 0.931 respectively.The correlation coefficient between the scores of the four aspects(including physical complaints,psychosocial issues,functional abilities,and extreme physical complaints) and the total questionnaire score was high(> 0.8),but the coefficients of emotional well-being and personal safety fears were 0.536 and 0.540 respectively.Six common factors were extracted by the factor analysis which defined 66.603% of the full variation rates.The total score of questionnaire was up to 0.99 before and after treatment.Conclusion CQLQ has good reliability and validity,which can better distinguish treatment effects.

Abstract:SESSION TITLE: Cough SESSION TYPE: Original Investigation Poster PRESENTED ON: Saturday, April 16, 2016 at 11:45 AM - 12:45 PM PURPOSE: The purpose of the study is to validate the Chinese version of HARQ, and explore its application in the management of chronic cough. METHODS: A standard Chinese version of HARQ was developed by an established translation procedure. Its repeatability and score changes in the different causes of chronic cough were evaluated in 78 patients with chronic cough and 15 healthy volunteers respectively. Receiver operating characteristic analysis was employed to evaluate the diagnostic value of HARQ. RESULTS: The repeatability of the Chinese version of HARQ was validated at a 2-week interval with the intraclass correlation coefficients of 0.926. The patients with chronic cough had higher HARQ score than healthy volunteers (20.7±10.4 vs 4.6±2.1, t=3.904, P=0.000). Among all the patients with variable causes of chronic cough, the patients with gastroesophageal reflux-induced cough presented with the highest HARQ score. When used for the prediction of cough due to gastroesophageal reflux, the optimal cut-off point of HARQ was defined at 23.5 according to the highest Youden index of 0.577, with a sensitivity of 85.7%, specificity of 72.0%, positive predictive value of 58.3% and negative predictive value of 92.6%. A sub-analysis only for cough dut to acid reflux showed the predictive accuracy of HARQ was further improved, corresponding to sensitivity of 87.5%, specificity of 83.9%, positive predictive value of 57.1% and negative predictive value of 96.9%. A meaningful cut-off point of HARQ could not be determined for the prediction of cough due to non-acid reflux. CONCLUSIONS: Chinese version of HARQ is a validated tool for management of chronic cough and may be used to predict the cough due to gastroesophageal reflux, especially due to acid reflux. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Hull Airway Reflux Questionnaire (HARQ) is a valid measure for chronic cough hypersensitivity syndrome. Abstract:Objective To explore seasonal difference in the distribution and frequency of etiologies of chronic cough during one year.Methods Two hundred and ninety patients consecutively referred for chronic cough to our Department of Respiratory Medicine between January 2009 and December 2009 were collected and divided into 4 groups by season,whose causes of cough had been primarily evaluated according to a step-by-step protocol and verified with the specific therapy.The seasonal changes in distribution and frequency of etiologies of chronic cough were analyzed by using χ2 test.Results The number of patients with chronic cough seeking medical care was higher in the second season and lowest in the forth season during this year.The distribution and frequency of cough variant asthma varied with season and decreased from 63.8% in the first season to 35.4% in the forth season(χ2=11.334,P=0.01).However,the distribution and frequency of the other causes eliciting chronic cough remained stable in a year.Conclusions Distribution and frequency of cough variant asthma vary with season.

Abstract:Background: The causes of chronic cough in elderly patients have not been specifically investigated. Therefore, it remains to be determined whether chronic cough differs between elderly and non-elderly patients. Objectives: To investigate the distribution of causes of chronic cough in elderly patients in comparison with etiologies of chronic cough observed in non-elderly patients. Methods: From 2,989 new patients presenting consecutively to the Department of Respiratory Medicine of the Tongji Hospital over a 1.5-year period, 287 patients with chronic cough were enrolled in the study. Patients aged ≥60 years were assigned to the elderly group. The elderly group comprised 104 patients and the non-elderly group the remaining 183 patients. The causes of cough were primarily evaluated according to a modification of Irwin’s anatomic diagnostic protocol which included induced sputum cytology, verified by the specific therapy. Results: Cough-variant asthma (34.6 vs. 41.5%) and upper airway cough syndrome (19.3 vs. 23.5%) were the most common causes of chronic cough both in the elderly and non-elderly groups. The distribution of causes and frequency were significantly different between elderly and non-elderly groups: angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEI)-induced cough (16.3 vs. 1.7%, χ2 value = 22.12, p < 0.001) and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD; 10.6 vs. 3.7%, χ2 value = 5.14, p = 0.02) were more common in the elderly group. Conclusions: A more frequent incidence of ACEI-induced cough and GERD is the distinctive feature in the cause distribution between elderly and non-elderly patients with chronic cough.

Abstract:Background: Cough is one of the most common respiratory symptoms and is well characterized in specialized cough clinics with high success rates of diagnosis and treatment. However, there is a paucity of data regarding cough in primary care settings. The present study aimed at investigating clinical epidemiology of cough through a national study of two questionnaire surveys sent to primary care physicians in China.Methods: Approximately 18,000 subjects recruited were having daytime or night symptoms of cough and diagnoses of respiratory disease from February 2005 to April 2006 as Survey 1 and from June 2007 to December 2007 as Survey 2. Patients suffering from respiratory malignancy, hyperthyroidism, hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, severe hypohepatia or renal dysfunction, pregnancy, possible pregnancy or lactation, neutropenia were not eligible. Information regarding demography, history of allergies, symptomatic profile, treatment and curative effects for cough was elicited.Results: 8216 questionnaires were collected in Survey 1 and 9711 in Survey 2. The mean values of ages were 25.7 and 22.3 years old, respectively. Symptoms included expectoration (74% and 76%), wheeze (59% and 74%), breathlessness (22% and 26%), chest pain (9% and 13%) and fever (15% and 18%). About 15% and 23% patients had hypersusceptibility, of whom 6% to 17% had a family history. More than 50% of the cases had histories of allergic rhinitis, asthma, conjunctivitis or atopic dermatitis. Asthma, COPD, and bronchitis were dominant etiologies of cough. Procaterol or the combination of antibiotics and steroids were used as the treatment.Conclusion: Causes and outcomes of cough differed with ages and time in this particular national study, while successful and precise diagnosis and management of cough in primary care settings need to be further improved in China.

Abstract:Objective To investigate the changes and clinical implications of cough sensitivity in upper airway cough syndrome(UACS).Methods Cough threshold C5 was measured by capsaicin cough sensitivity test in 94 patients with upper airway cough syndrome;it was also measured in 30 patients after cough completely resolved with specific therapy.Results The mean cough threshold C5 was 5.85(1.95,31.2)μmol/L and within the normal range;however,36 patients(38.30%) presented cough hypersensitivity.Thirty patients received re-examination of cough sensitivity to capsaicin after cough disappeared,there was no significant difference in cough threshold C5 between pre-and post-treatment[5.85(1.95,31.2)μmol/L vs 7.8(0.98,7.8)|xmol/L,Z=-0.72,P= 0.47].The effective treatment resulted in the recover of cough threshold C5 to normal level in 6 of 12 patients with increased cough sensitivity to capsaicin.Conclusion Cough sensitivity in upper airway cough syndrome is heterogeneous and overlapped with normal value.Therefore,upper airway cough syndrome is not always consistent with the concept of cough hypersensitivity syndrome.
Discrepancy Between Presumptive and Definite Causes of Chronic Cough

Abstract:Background The current diagnostic algorithms for chronic cough require the establishment of the primary presumptive causes followed by the confirmation of diagnosis with the specific therapies. The aim of the study was to investigate the discrepancy between presumptive and definite causes and its clinical implication.Methods A total of 109 patients with chronic cough underwent laboratory investigations to identify the cause of cough; including sinus computerized tomography (if needed), histamine bronchial provocation, induced sputum cytology and 24-hour esophageal pH or multi-channel intraluminal impedance combined with pH monitoring. The presumptive causes were confirmed by treating them sequentially. The difference between presumptive and definite causes of chronic cough was compared.Results Single cause was more frequent in the definite diagnosis than in the presumptive diagnosis (78.9% vs. 54.1%, X-2 =15.01, P=0.0001). In contrast, multiple causes were significantly fewer in definite diagnosis than in the presumptive diagnosis (15.6% vs. 37.6%, X-2=13.53, P=0.0002). There was a discrepancy between definite and presumptive causes in 30 patients (27.5%). Compared with the presumptive causes, definite upper airway cough syndrome (24.8% vs. 11.9%, X-2=6.0, P=0.01) and gastroesophageal reflux disease (6.4% vs. 0, X-2=7.23, P=0.007) was more frequent as a single cause of chronic cough while cough variant asthma plus gastroesophageal reflux disease (3.7% vs. 11.9%, X-2=5.17, P=0.02) and upper airway cough syndrome plus nonasthmatic eosinophilic bronchitis (0 vs. 9.2%, X-2=10.48, P=0.001) were fewer as multiple causes of chronic cough.Conclusions A discrepancy was common between presumptive and definite causes of chronic cough. To treat presumptive causes sequentially may be a suitable solution for avoidance of erroneous multiple causes and possible over-treatment. Chin Med J 2011;124(24):4138-4143
New Insights into Refractory Chronic Cough and Unexplained Chronic Cough: A 6-Year Ambispective Cohort Study.

Abstract:PURPOSE:Only limited studies have depicted the unique features and management of refractory chronic cough (RCC) and unexplained chronic cough (UCC). These led to the initiation of this study, which reported the demographic characteristics, manifestations, and long-term outcomes on a large series of consecutive RCC/UCC patients, providing a guideline-led real-world clinical experience.METHODS:Retrospective baseline information was obtained from Clinical Research Database (January 2016 to May 2021). At least 6 months after the last clinic visit, included subjects were prospectively followed up.RESULTS:Three hundred and sixty-nine RCC and UCC patients (199 females, 53.9%) were analyzed. The median cough duration was 24.0 (12.0-72.0) months. Laryngeal symptoms were reported in 95.9% of the patients. The common triggers for coughing were talking (74.9%), pungent odors (47.3%), eating (45.5%), and cold air (42.8%). RCC was considered in 38.2%, and the remainder of 228 patients had UCC, with an equal sex distribution (P = 0.66). Among the 141 RCCs, 90.8% (128) had refractory reflux cough, which was more responsive to current treatments (P < 0.01). Although most features and test results between RCC and UCC were similar, UCC was more commonly inappropriately treated (P < 0.01). Nineteen (7.7-41.1) months after the final clinic visit, 31.2% still coughed persistently, while 68.8% reported cough improvement or remission. RCC reported more favorable treatment outcomes (including cough improvement, control, and spontaneous remission) than UCC (P < 0.01). Coughs with long duration before the initial cough clinic visit (P < 0.01), frequent urinary incontinence (P < 0.01), and being sensitive to "talking" (P < 0.01) or "cold air" (P < 0.01) were less likely to be solved.CONCLUSIONS:The current treatments only improve cough symptoms in two-thirds of patients. Clinical indicators for treatment failure were those coughing for long duration and being sensitive to "talking" or "cold air."
