Abstract:The Schiff base complexes containing a transition metal ion, CoII and CuII, were used as mimetic peroxidase in the catalytic oxidation of phenol by H2O2. The characteristic spectra of the Schiff base complexes in H2O2-buffered solution were recorded and analyzed, respectively. The mechanism and the kinetic mathematic model of the phenol catalytic oxidation were studied. The results showed that the Schiff base complexes containing the transition metal ion, CoII and CuII, as peroxidase mimics exhibited good catalytic activity and the character of the peroxidase in the catalytic oxidation of phenol by H2O2 under different conditions.

Abstract:Two new ligands, 1-hydroxy-5-[4-(2-hydroxybenzylideneamino)pheno - xy]-3-oxapentane (HL1) and 1-methoxy-5-[4-(2-hydroxybenzylideneamino)pheno - xy]-3-oxapentane (HL2), and their Mn(III) complexes were synthesized and characterized. The two new Schiff base Mn(III) complexes were used to mimic peroxidase in the oxidation of phenol by hydrogen peroxide. The effect of the mole ratio of H2O2 to the complex, pH and temperature on the reaction rate was investigated. The mechanism of the catalytic oxidation is discussed. A kinetic mathematic model for the oxidation of phenol catalyzed by Schiff base Mn(III) complexes has been constructed.

Abstract:The iron(II) complex of the macrocyclic ligand 5,7,7,12,14,14-hexamethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraaza-cyclotetradecane was synthesized and characterized and used as a mimetic peroxidase in the catalytic oxidation of phenol with H2O2. The mechanism and a kinetic model of the catalytic oxidation are described. The results show: the catalyst as a peroxidase mimic exhibited strong catalytic activity; the main reaction products detected by high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) were catechol, hydroquinone, p-benzoquinone, maleic acid and oxalic acid; the catalytic oxidation of phenol accords with the enzyme mechanism.

Abstract:The reactions of hydroquinone with hydrogen peroxide catalyzed by transition metal ions Cu2+, Fe2+, Fe3+, Co2+ and Mn2+ were investigated in aqueous solution at 25 degrees C. Two copper (II) complexes (bis(dimethylglyoxime) copper(II) and 5,7,7,12,14,14-hexamethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradeca-4,11-dienatocopper(II)iodide) were prepared. Their catalytic activities on this oxidation were kinetically investigated in aqueous solution and in cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) micellar solution at 25 degrees C. The kinetic equations for micellar catalysis and metallomicellar catalysis were established, respectively. CTAB micelle enhances the reaction rate due to its concentrated and electrostatic effects on substrates and/or intermediate. Metallomicelle exhibits remarkable catalytic activity on this oxidation reaction, which is attributed to the active center and the microenvironment effects. Metallomicelle enhances the rate of reaction by activating hydroquinone anion. The presence of co-ligand of imidazole (or pyridine) remarkably increases the catalytic activity of metal complex in micelle system in contrast to it lowers the activity of the complex in aqueous solution. Metallomicelles could be treated as the mimic models of peroxidase.

The results showed that Schiff base complexes containing Cu(II) exhibited the character of the peroxidase under different conditions in the catalytic reaction.

Abstract:Liquid phase catalytic selective hydroxylation of phenol to catechol and hydroquinone was carried out in the presence of metalloporphyrins using hydrogen peroxide as oxidant and water as solvent. Five kinds of metal tetra(p-chlorophenyl)porphrin (T(p-Cl)PPMCI, M = Fe, Co, Mn, Cu, Zn) were studied. It was found that T(p-Cl)PPFeCl had high catalytic activity and diphenol selectivity for the hydroxylation of phenol to catechol and hydroquitione. The influence of various reaction parameters, namely, reaction temperature, solvent, ratio of substrate and oxidant, substrate concentration, the amount of catalyst, reaction time and pH value were investigated systematically. When water was used as solvent (10 mL), the optimum conditions were following: pH = 7, the concentration of phenol was 0.3 g/mL, the molar ratio of phenol and H2O2 was 1/2, the molar ratio of catalyst and phenol was 7/100000, the reaction temperature was 65 degrees C and the reaction time was 1.5 h. Under above optimum conditions, the phenol conversion was up to 55.1%, and the selectivity of diphenol was almost up to 99.9%, the molar turnover numbers of the catalyst was about 7500. Abstract:Hydroxylation of phenol with H2O2 catalyzed by Fe(OH)3 was studied. Effects of catalyst dosage, reaction temperature, reaction time and mole ratio of H2O2 to phenol on the hydroxylation were investigated. The reaction induction period and reaction mechanism were discussed preliminarily. The hydroxylation reaction includes an induction period and a rapid reaction stage before completion. To rationalize the reaction kinetics a mechanism was suggested that a Fe(II)/Fe(III) redox pair acts as active species(involving a free radical mechanism) in the reaction induction period, and a complex consisted of ferric ion and diphenol acts as active species (involving an electrophilic substitution mechanism) in the rapid reaction stage. Under the condition; water as solvent 20.0 mL, phenol 1.880 g, reaction temperature 40-90°C, dosage of Fe (OH)3 as catalyst (based on phenol mass) 0.5% ~ 4.0%, n (H2O2): n(phenol) 0.80, conversion of phenol is above 40.0% and selectivity to diphenol is about 88.0%.

Abstract:Metalloporphyrins, as model compounds of P-450 enzyme, have been widely used in biomimetic catalytic oxidation reactions. The biomimetic catalytic oxidation system developed by metalloporphyrins has been gathering much attention due to the characteristics of high efficiency, good selectivity and mild conditions. In this paper, the application of metalloporphyrins as catalysts for the catalytic oxidation were reviewed, mainly including the oxidation of alkanes, olefins, alcohols, ketones and other substrates. The possible reaction mechanism and active species were summarized. Last, the challenges and prospects of metalloporphyrins complexes in catalytic oxidation were discussed.

Abstract:(phen)_2 Cu was used as a mimetic enzyme for peroxidase to catalyze the oxidative reaction of o-phenylenediamine with hydrogen peroxide as an oxidant. The effects of different conditions on its catalytic activity were studied. A sensitive spectrophotoscopic method for determination of trace amount of hydrogen peroxide was proposed based on the catalytic effect of (phen)_2 Cu on the reaction of o-phenylenediamine and hydrogen peroxide. Under the optimal conditions, hydrogen peroxide concentration has a good linear relationship with the system absorption in the range of 9.5×10~(-8) to 1.67×10~(-6) mol/L hydrogen peroxide, and the determination limit was 8.0×10~(-8) mol/L.

Abstract:Bis(pyrazolyl)methane ligands are excellent components of model complexes used to investigate the activity of the enzyme tyrosinase. Combining the N donors 3-tert-butylpyrazole and 1-methylimidazole results in a ligand that is capable of stabilising a (μ-η(2) :η(2) )-dicopper(II) core that resembles the active centre of tyrosinase. UV/Vis spectroscopy shows blueshifted UV bands in comparison to other known peroxo complexes, due to donor competition from different ligand substituents. This effect was investigated with the help of theoretical calculations, including DFT and natural transition orbital analysis. The peroxo complex acts as a catalyst capable of hydroxylating a variety of phenols by using oxygen. Catalytic conversion with the non-biological phenolic substrate 8-hydroxyquinoline resulted in remarkable turnover numbers. In stoichiometric reactions, substrate-binding kinetics was observed and the intrinsic hydroxylation constant, kox , was determined for five phenolates. It was found to be the fastest hydroxylation model system determined so far, reaching almost biological activity. Furthermore, Hammett analysis proved the electrophilic character of the reaction. This sheds light on the subtle role of donor strength and its influence on hydroxylation activity.

Abstract:Recent researches on mechanism of hydrocarbon selective oxidations with hydrogen peroxide catalyzed by metalloporphyrins including iron porphyrins and manganese porphyrins are reviewed in this paper. The strategies to promote heterolytic cleavage of hydrogen peroxide to facilitate the formation of active high valent metal-oxo species are discussed in detail.
