Abstract:An algorithm is proposed for robust identification of a rational fractional transfer function with a fixed degree under the framework of worst-case/deterministic robust identification. The convergence of the algorithm is proven. Its feasibility is shown with a numerical example.

Abstract:In this paper a convergent algorithm for l1 robust identification of stable fractional transfer functions with known degree is proposed, which can produce a fractional transfer function with fixed degree by solving a linear programming problem. An explicit upper bound for its worst-case identification error is given. Based on this algorithm, a parameter estimator of all coefficients of the fractional transfer function to be identified is constructed. It is proven that the estimator will converge to the true coefficients as the number of observations tends to infinity and the bound of the unknown noises tends to zero. Numerical examples are presented to show the performance of this estimator.

Abstract:A convergent algorithm for l(1) robust identification of a stable rational transfer function with known order is proposed, which is implemented by solving a linear programming problem and can produce a rational transfer function with a fixed order. An explicit upper hound on its worst case identification error is given. Abstract:This article deals with the identification of fractional order systems. A new algorithm based on modulating function is presented providing recursive parameter estimation of fractional order models. The article utilizes the property of modulating function and integration by parts, and handles the fractional order derivatives with modulating windows and numerical approximation. The algorithm achieves modulation integral on fractional order system equation, and formulates an identification model. Then the recursive least squares estimation is adopted to obtain parameters of the original fractional model with noise. It is shown that the proposed approach can arrive at a precise estimation of the parameters. Finally, numerical simulation examples are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.
Robust Commensurate Fractional Differentiators for a Class of Fractional Order Linear Systems

Abstract:A series of robust commensurate fractional differentiators are proposed for a class of fractional order linear systems in this paper. Such differentiators are based on the modulating functions method. First, fractional integration by parts formulas and modulating functions are used to eliminate the undesired terms and keep needed items. Second, a recursive algorithm is designed to calculate the required derivatives. In this way we can get a set of estimation results in one calculation, and it only requires less computational cost. Moreover, a detailed noise error analysis of the algorithm is performed to improve the estimation results. Finally, the efficiency and robustness of the presented method is verified by numerical simulations.

Abstract:An efficient identification algorithm is given for commensurate order linear time-invariant fractional systems. This algorithm can identify not only model coefficients of the system, but also its differential order at the same time. The basic idea is to change the system matrix into a diagonal one through basis transformation. This makes it possible to turn the system's input-output relationships into the summation of several simple subsystems, and after the identification of these subsystems, the whole identification system is obtained which is algebraically equivalent to the former system. Finally an identification example verifies the effectiveness of the method previously mentioned.

Abstract:The problem of identifying fractional order transfer functions from frequency response data has been studied. The fractional derivative order and the denominator coefficients appear nonlinearly in the fractional order transfer function model, while the numerator coefficients appear linearly. Based on this fact, a frequency domain identification algorithm is proposed. The fractional derivative order and the denominator coefficients are estimated using simulated annealing, and the numerator coefficients are derived by solving the linear least squares problem. All parameters, including the fractional derivative order, can be estimated using the proposed algorithm. Simulation examples with noise-free and noisy frequency response data demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:The state-space representation of linear time-invariant (LTI) fractional order systems is introduced, and a proof of their stability theory is also given. Then an efficient identification algorithm is proposed for those fractional order systems. The basic idea of the algorithm is to compute fractional derivatives and the filter simultaneously, i.e., the filtered fractional derivatives can be obtained by computing them in one step, and then system identification can be fulfilled by the least square method. The instrumental variable method is also used in the identification of fractional order systems. In this way, even if there is colored noise in the systems, the unbiased estimation of the parameters can still be obtained. Finally an example of identifying a viscoelastic system is given to show the effectiveness of the aforementioned method.

Abstract:This paper aims to deal with the non-asymptotic and robust estimation problem for nonlinear fractional-order systems. The motivation starts with a physical system which develops into a group of system models including linear and nonlinear, commensurate and noncommensurate, integer-order and noninteger-order ones. Different from the existing modulating functions method, the proposed method breaks through the limitation of transforming the original system into the input–output differential equation, which makes the estimation for more types of systems possible. By introducing a new class of fractional order modulating functions, the state is exactly expressed by algebraic integral formulas without knowing the initial conditions of the studied system, despite the corrupting noises in the output measurement. Finally, it is illustrated in the simulation examples that the proposed estimator not only proves to be effective in the state estimation of noninteger-order systems, but also shows its advantages in that of integer-order systems compared to the high-gain observer.

Abstract:This paper addresses the problems of robust stability of fractional-order systems with mixed uncertainties, including multi-parameter uncertainties and norm-bounded uncertainties. The problems are relevant because on the one hand, uncertainties are common in real systems and the uncertainties in different components of systems may be of different types, and on the other hand, the non-convex and decoupling problems for fractional-order systems with α ∈ ( 0 , 1 ) and mixed uncertainties need to be thoroughly resolved. The core approaches utilized in this paper include the robust nonsingularity analysis of uncertain matrices, error-free determinant transformation and μ -analysis methods. Based on the above approaches, necessary and sufficient conditions for the robust stability of fractional-order systems with mixed uncertainties are proposed. Then, by estimating the spectral radius of the uncertain matrices, novel robust stability conditions for such uncertain fractional-order systems are obtained. After that, the robust stability bounds for such uncertain fractional-order systems are established, based on which an algorithm for solving the robust stability bounds is provided by utilizing the traversal method in the finite frequency interval. The derived results in this paper are more universal and less conservative than the existing works. Finally, two numerical examples including a fractional-order electrical circuit example are provided to demonstrate the applicability and effectiveness of the developed methods.

Rational approximation of fractional order systems by vector fitting method

Abstract:A novel method for approximating fractional order systems is presented. Vector fitting is involved in this method. As the basis of approximation of fractional order systems, approximation of fractional order operators is mostly achieved by curve fitting in frequency domain, such as the well-known Oustaloup’s method. However, these methods have several serious defects in principle. A new perspective based on system identification is adopted to deal with approximation of fractional order operators in this paper. Moreover, nonzero initial condition for approximating fractional order systems is considered. And the proposed assignment of initial values for the Caputo case offers an effective solution for the simulation with nonzero initial condition. Finally, numerical examples are given to verify the efficiency of the proposed method.
Identification method for a fractional-order system in terms of equivalent dynamic properties

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce an efficient method for identifying fractional dynamic systems using extended sparse regression and cross-validation techniques. The former identifies equations that fit the data with varying candidate functions, while the latter determines the optimal equation with the fewest terms yet ensuring accuracy. The identified optimal equation is expected to share the same dynamic properties as the original fractional system. Unlike previous studies focusing on efficiently computing fractional terms, this strategy addresses dynamic analysis from a data perspective. Importantly, in the proposed method, we treat the fractional order as a variable to account for its impact on the dynamic properties of the identified equation. This treatment enables the identified equation to successfully capture dynamic behaviors when the fractional order changes. We validate the effectiveness of the method using three classical fractional-order systems as well as an energy harvesting system. Interestingly, we find that, although the identified equations do not contain non-local terms like the original fractional-order systems, they exhibit the same stochastic P-bifurcation phenomena. In other words, we construct an equivalent equation without memory properties, sharing the dynamic properties with the original system.

Abstract:Parameter uncertainty is inevitably found in almost every system and, if is ignored, it could jeopardize the effectiveness of control method. Motivated by this issue, we consider a robust optimal control problem governed by a nonlinear fractional system with uncertain parameters, where the system sensitivity with respect to the uncertain parameters is explicitly included in the cost functional. For this problem, we first prove that the system sensitivity can be expressed as the solution of an auxiliary fractional system. Then, we propose a numerical scheme for discretizing both the original and auxiliary fractional systems, resulting in a finite-dimensional optimization problem. Furthermore, a numerical solution algorithm based on gradients of the cost functional is developed for the resulting optimization problem. Finally, numerical results for two example problems are given to demonstrate the validity and applicability of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:Based on the generalized Routh-Hurwitz criterion, we propose a sufficient and necessary criterion for testing the stability of fractional-order linear systems with order {\alpha}{\in}[1,2), called the fractional-order Routh-Hurwitz criterion. Compared with the existing criterion, our one involves fewer and simpler expressions, which is significant for analyzing robust stability of fractional-order uncertain systems. All these expressions are explicit ones about the coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of system matrix, so the stable parameter region of fractional-order uncertain systems can be described directly. Some examples show the effectiveness of our method.

Abstract:To improve the largecalculation defect in the present methods for identification of system parameters, rational fraction equality theory was used to estimate the parameters of a system of order n (n is greater than the true order of the system) using the system inputoutput data. The theory was also used to compute parameter estimates for all orders less than n. The true order and parameter estimates were then determined using a criterion function. This algorithm requires recursive computations only for large n, so there are less calculations overall. A simulation shows that the proposed method effectively estimates the system order and parameters. 

Abstract:Based on model approximation, the problem of stability analysis for uncertain fractional order systems with time-varying delay is proposed. Firstly, a rational approximation method is introduced for fractional order systems. Based on the above method, the fractional order systems are transformed into the integer order systems whose uncertainties are approximation error. Afterwards, integral inequality approach is used to analyze the stability of the approximation system, obtaining a robust stability criteria denoted by LMI. Theoretic proof and numerical examples are provided to illustrate the effectiveness and the availability of the proposed method.

Moreover, the order is also uncertain and belongs to an interval containing the integer one. This kind of system models are reasonable results of fractional order system identifications. In this note, we derive the robust stability analysis and synthesis of such uncertain fractional order systems. Two numerical examples are presented to illustrate the effectiveness and potential of the developed theoretical results.

Abstract:Fractional order calculus provides an excellent tool to describe some complicated real systems more adequately than integer order models.For the identification of fractional order systems,a maximum likelihood algorithm based on the transfer function in frequency domain is proposed in this paper.First,the fractional order transfer function is briefly introduced.Second,the algorithm is deduced in detail and the equivalence between likelihood function and cost function is verified via Lagrange method,and the identification problem is converted to an equivalent optimization problem.Third,Gauss-Newton method is applied to solve the optimization problem.Finally,this algorithm is validated via an illustrative example.

Abstract:In this paper, the robust stability of fractional-order systems with fractional order 0 < alpha < 1 and structured uncertain parameters is considered. Firstly, novel robust stability conditions of the above systems are presented based on the parameter-dependent polynomial functions. Secondly, the existence of the parameter-dependent polynomial functions is transformed into linear matrix inequalities via the generalized Kalman-Yakubovic-Popov lemma. In addition, the above methods can also be applied to solve the robust stability of fractional-order systems with structured uncertainties or polytopic uncertainties. Finally, numerical examples are presented to show the proposed methods are less conservative than the existing methods.
