Abstract:It has become solid waste pollution problem needed to be solved urgently.Based on the disadvantages of the traditional treatment processes of municipal sewage sludge,we present that resource utilization techniques for the sludge are the main way of the final disposal methods in the future. The technologies such as sludge anaerobic fermentation making gas,sludge pyrolysis to produce oil fuel,adsorbent producing,building material utilization and the prospects are analyzed,so as to provide reference to the resource utilization of sludge in the future.

Abstract:Sludge reduction technique is a new concept for disposal of residual sludge proposed based on the reutilization of residual sludge.According to production principle of residual activated sludge in biological treatment process,the possible approaches to sludge reduction may be based on three aspects: uncoupling metabolism for the decrease of bacterial complex,cell lysis technology by enhancing microbial endogenous metabolism,and micro fauna prey upon bacteria through food chain.The research progress of sludge reduction technique was discussed theoretically and practically.

Abstract:An anoxic/oxic membrane bioreactor (AO) and three pilot-scale anaerobic side stream reactors (ASSR) coupled MBRs (ASSR-MBRs), packed with 0%, 25% and 50% carriers in ASSRs, were continuously operated to study the mechanisms for sludge reduction. Four systems showed efficient COD and NH4+-N removal, while packing carriers significantly enhanced nitrogen removal. 25% filling fraction (AP25) achieved the highest sludge reduction efficiency of 50.5% compared to 0% (21.7%) and 50% (39.7%). Compared to ASSR-MBR, carriers enhanced the release of dissolved organic matters, and accelerated the secretion of enzyme for cell lysis and hydrolysis. In AP25, the presence of carriers prompted the formation of environment propitious to sludge reduction in bulk sludge. AP25 tended to enrich hydrolytic, fermentative and denitrifying bacteria to accelerate hydrolysis process, while excessive carriers had negative effect on biomass stability and movement of carriers.

To solve this problem, some strategies have been employed in-situ to reduce waste activated sludge production and proved effective. This paper reviews mechanisms and applications of the in-situ excess sludge reduction strategies. It is expected that this paper could attract widely attention on sludge reduction and inspire researchers and engineers to develop feasible and effective measures to control sludge production in an acceptable range.

Abstract:Millions of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) based on the activated sludge process have been established worldwide to help to purify wastewater. However, a vast amount of sludge is inevitably generated, and the cost of sludge disposal could reach over half of the total operation cost of a WWTP. Various sludge reduction techniques have been developed, including physicochemical, biological, and combinational methods. Micro-organisms that could reduce sludge by cryptic growth are vital to the biological approach. Currently, only limited functional bacteria have been isolated, and the lack of knowledge on the underlying mechanism hinders the technique development. Therefore, the present study is aimed at isolating sludge-reducing bacteria and optimizing the sludge reduction process through response surface methodology. Nineteen strains were obtained from sludge. The mix-cultures did not show a higher sludge reduction rate than the pure culture, which may be ascribed to the complicated interactions, such as competition and antagonistic effects. In total, 21.2% and 13.9% of total suspended and volatile suspended solids were reduced within 48 h after optimization. The three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectrum and hydrolases test results revealed that the sludge reduction might be promoted by the strain mainly through hydrolysis via proteinase and amylase. The results obtained from the study demonstrate the potential of using micro-organisms for sludge reduction through cryptic growth.

Abstract:This review presents the state-of-the-art sludge reduction technologies applied in both wastewater and sludge treatment lines. They include chemical, mechanical, thermal, electrical treatment, addition of chemical un-coupler, and predation of protozoa/metazoa in wastewater treatment line, and physical, chemical and biological pretreatment in sludge treatment line. Emphasis was put on their effect on sludge reduction performance, with 10% sludge reduction to zero sludge production in wastewater treatment line and enhanced TS (total solids) or volatile solids removal of 5–40% in sludge treatment line. Free nitrous acid (FNA) technology seems good in wastewater treatment line but it is only under the lab-scale trial. In sludge treatment line, thermal, ultrasonic (<4400kJ/kg TS), FNA pretreatment and temperature-phased anaerobic digestion (TPAD) are promising if pathogen inactivation is not a concern. However, thermal pretreatment and TPAD are superior to other pretreatment technologies when pathogen inactivation is required. The new wastewater treatment processes including SANI®, high-rate activated sludge coupled autotrophic nitrogen removal and anaerobic membrane bioreactor coupled autotrophic nitrogen removal also have a great potential to reduce sludge production. In the future, an effort should be put on the effect of sludge reduction technologies on the removal of organic micropollutants and heavy metals.

Abstract:Abstrca t:The sludge of the second pond in the urban sewage treatment plant contained much water of 99%, parasitic ovum, bacteria and organic pollutants, posing the great risk to the environment.How to efficiently dewater from the sludge,and reduce the sludge production has become a problem in the field of solid waste treatments .The current development of sludge reduction technologies including the chemical conditioner, physicochemical treatments and biological predation technologies was described in detail.The mechanisms of various processes, the treatment efficiencies and the disadvantages were discussed.The future development directions of sludge reduction technologies were put forward.All these were done aiming at establishing the theoretical foundation for the reduction of activated sludge with harmless and green technologies.

Abstract:Purpose Urbanization and industrialization in China has resulted in a dramatic increase in the volume of wastewater and sewage sludge produced from wastewater treatment plants. Problems associated with sewage sludge have attracted increasing attention from the public and urban planners. How to manage sludge in an economically and environmentally acceptable manner is one of the critical issues that modern societies are facing. Methods Sludge treatment systems consist of thickening, dewatering, and several different alternative main treatments (anaerobic digestion, aerobic digestion, drying, composting, and incineration). Agricultural application, landfill, and incineration are the principal disposal methods for sewage sludge in China. However, sewage sludge disposal in the future should focus on resource recovery, reducing environmental impacts and saving economic costs. Results The reuse of biosolids in all scenarios can be environmentally beneficial and cost-effective. Anaerobic digestion followed by land application is the preferable options due to low economic and energy costs and material reuse. Conclusion It is necessary to formulate a standard suitable for the utilization of sewage sludge in China.

Abstract:Sludge reduction via microbial metabolism does not require extra energy and resource inputs and thus merits attention as an alternative approach for sustainable wastewater treatment. This review presents a summary and analysis of the existing literatures on sludge reduction based on microbial metabolism, as well as interprets these sludge reduction mechanisms using bacterial thermodynamics and stoichiometry. Future efforts should be directed toward using advanced analytical techniques to further reveal sludge reduction mechanisms. The feasibility of coupling sludge reduction and nutrient removal by microorganism metabolism needs to be further evaluated to minimize the effect of sludge reduction on nutrient removal. A comprehensive life cycle assessment of sludge reduction strategies is recommended to effectively confirm their sustainability. Full-scale research is needed to verify the results obtained from bench- and pilot-scale experiments. This review presents the future opportunities and challenges for sludge reduction based on microbial metabolism in the excess sludge disposal.

Abstract:This paper is designed to critically review the recent developments of membrane bio-technologies for sludge reduction and treatment by covering process fundamentals, performances (sludge reduction efficiency, membrane fouling, pollutant removal, etc.) and key operational parameters. The future perspectives of the hybrid membrane processes for sludge reduction and treatment are also discussed. For sludge reduction using membrane bioreactors (MBRs), literature review shows that biological maintenance metabolism, predation on bacteria, and uncoupling metabolism through using oxic-settling-anaerobic (OSA) process are promising ways that can be employed in full-scale applications. Development of control methods for worm proliferation is in great need of, and a good sludge reduction and MBR performance can be expected if worm growth is properly controlled. For lysis-cryptic sludge reduction method, improvement of oxidant dispersion and increase of the interaction with sludge cells can enhance the lysis efficiency. Green uncoupler development might be another research direction for uncoupling metabolism in MBRs. Aerobic hybrid membrane system can perform well for sludge thickening and digestion in small- and medium-sized wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), and pilot-scale/full-scale applications have been reported. Anaerobic membrane digestion (AMD) process is a very competitive technology for sludge stabilization and digestion. Use of biogas recirculation for fouling control can be a powerful way to decrease the energy requirements for AMD process. Future research efforts should be dedicated to membrane preparation for high biomass applications, process optimization, and pilot-scale/full-scale tracking research in order to push forward the real and wide applications of the hybrid membrane systems for sludge minimization and treatment.

Abstract:Construction wastes have attracted more and more public attention with the development of the city construction. On the basis of summarizing the existing slurry treatment technologies in relevant. area, a new slurry treatment process is proposed according to the characteristics of waste bored pile slurry. Three steps included in this process: slurry purification, flocculation and pressure filtration. A practical application is used to demonstrate the feasibility of this process. The results show that the slurry is disposed without pollution, achieving zero discharge of pollutants.
